I have a friend who is looking into upgrading her espresso machine. I love mine and have recommended the francis francis X1. It has power to push water through well packed espresso. There are others out there that I don't know about. her other requirement is that it needs to be pink. Please tell me about your experience and what works for you.

what do you call a group of coffee addicts?

I was outside work, the other day, contemplating life and the weather, and i saw a group of people walking by carrying coffee cups from the local starbucks. And i thought, hey, a herd of coffee drinkers. But then, it came to me... it would not be a 'herd'; a group of Lions is a pride, a group of Crows is a Murder (I am a bit of a nerd for these things, you see). What is a group of coffee addicts?
I humbly submit, a Quiver. A quiver of Coffee Addicts.

Turkish Coffee?

Anyone had Turkish coffee? My sweet girlfriend bought me an Ibris (brass pot for making Turkish Coffee) a few holidays ago, and since then I've been playing around with adding spices to it. Traditionally, Turkish coffee is seasoned with cardamom, clove, and lots of sugar. Some regions in Africa put cocoa and coriander in their coffee. I've also tried cumin (it has some of the lemony notes that coriander has) and paprika (inspired by the chile powder in cocoa idea in the movie Chocolat).

Any other ideas?

Also 1 pound of fabulous coffee, filters, and a scoop...all for 14.95 shipping is included in that price. Why am I typing this? Well, I love a coffee company that sends me coffee to my apartment.

In espresso spots, I sometimes have to choose between the best coffee or the friendliest people. Is it true that the two do not go together?
Right now I dream of the Illy shop. I can go there tomorrow. They do not condone loitering, and they have the best substance in my book. There, I got an espresso con panna artfully apportioned. I'm a bit sad now; I won't have an espresso 'til tomorrow.

At my new office, we have a Keurig Machine. It brews Coffee and Tea from these little cups. While I enjoy the simplicity and ease of getting my coffee fix on, I miss the aroma and routine of making a cup of coffee. There's something about brewing the coffee...

Has anyone else used one of these machines yet?

You can check out their website here: http://www.keurig.com/

Our Craft Service does Coffee Right!

I have never been in a Production Office before that doesn't obsess over having a good, new nice pot of coffee going at all time - but welcome to the one that does. So I was sad that I was going to have to walk all the way over to the stage. Lo and Behold, when I got there - the Gods of Coffee be praised - our craft service has the ultimate coffee set-up. I almost knelt down and kissed the ground. Wiping back tears of joy, I could see that not only did we have a machine that freshly brewed Coffee by the Cup - including grinding the beans for that cup - but also a machine that makes Mochas, Lattes, Capps, etc. on demand! I have reached Nirvana on a fluke. Thanks be.

at Dunkin Donuts is giving away free iced coffee today. it doesn't suck and who doesn't want iced coffee when it is 27 degrees outside??? Dunkin Donuts has a rep for having really great coffee. I personally don't think it is wonderful, but it doesn't suck! Anyway...FREE COFFEE!

Hear is a quote from the sight.

"Merging the class and elegance of a Renaissance Faire with
the freshness of a Fairy Festival and the chaos of a Burning Man event, into one..."

“I realize the word ‘change’ is terrifying to the old school faire folk, but this production company is going to let the market decide what direction the faire goes in.
If the consumer wants a mob of cheerleaders that appear to be off the set of a “Road Warrior” movie, running through the faire dancing up a storm, creating the illusion that a mob of patrons have taken over the faire. Followed by a similarly attired marching band playing a very hip march with a back beat that you can’t help but want to swing to... then that’s what we’ll give them..!”

a good burr grinder that won't hurt the wallet

I recently lost my capresso. We had many happy moments of coffee grinding, but eventually it could not grind fine beans or for that matter...beans at all. So, I went shopping and found this grinder at Costco for 25.00! I love it. It is very easy to use, has a lot of storage, looks pretty, and is a fabulous grinder. I am the fruits of its labor right now. My latte is excellent!!! I usually like the ESE pods because they are hassle free and not messy. I have to admit that this grinder reduces mess as well!
here is the link for those interested. This is to the Cuisinart website. I didn't see it on the Costco site, but they had it in the store.

Tea Parties vs Coffee Breaks

I was just sitting here at work wondering why is it that there are Tea Parties and Tea Time but only Coffee Breaks? Is it only me but isn't coffee getting the short end of the stick.

I mean tea has a special time, special food, and special rituals! I have nothing against tea, high tea, tea parties and the like. I have thoroughly enjoyed such things. I just think coffee deserves more than 15 minutes devoted to it! Perhaps we can come up with our own High Coffee!

Feel free to talk amongst yourselves...

I know most of you oppose the Starbucks empire, but the did do one thing right when they were creating the foo foo drink. Cinnamon Dolce syrup was created last year. It became so popular, they had a hard time keeping it stocked. i went by Starbucks and they are carrying it again! Now, they have it in Sugar free (Splenda) which is great for us calorie counters who need a sweet in the afternoon. I just bought the whole bottle for 6.95...Just wanted to share the love!

Best coffee in the world?

This topic has probably already been beaten to death here, but after living in New York, Las Vegas and now North Carolina I have to say that NC coffee kicks ass! Lots of indie bean traders and roasters here. I like anyplace that has good coffee.

Haven't travelled internationally much, but I actually like German coffee. I know a lot of people think its narsty, but I think its strong and has a nice taste. The most important thing is that it gives me a nice clean caffeine buzz that lasts a long time. Beste Bohne I think is the brand I like . . I might be spelling that wrong.

I've heard Greek or Turkish coffee is the best. Thoughts, comments? :)

Espresso thief guilty to the last drop
By Katie Liesener/ Daily News Staff
Thursday, July 6, 2006

FRAMINGHAM -- A man who attempted to steal a $1,200 espresso maker from a Wayland Starbucks on Tuesday pleaded guilty yesterday to the theft in exchange for probation.
Louis M. Guido, 42, of 73 Lubec St., Boston, appeared in Framingham District Court yesterday to be arraigned on charges of larceny over $250. Guido pleaded guilty, and as part of the plea was sentenced to one year of probation and fined $1,000 plus court costs.
The case against Guido's alleged accomplice, Karen Campbell, 36, also of 73 Lubec St., Boston, was dismissed.
Guido took the boxed DeLonghi Magnifica Espresso Machine from a number of espresso machines sold at the store from $300 on up, while Campbell occupied the supervisor at the counter, police said.
Campbell, who was "kind of attractive, somewhat of a flirt," was paying for a purchase with a gift card while Guido nabbed the machine, partially concealed behind a store display, said Detective Sgt. Patrick Swanick.
After Guido came over and whispered something in Campbell's ear, she went out one door while he carried the box out the side door, Swanick said. Store supervisor Paul Noyhovich ran outside and confronted Guido in the parking lot, saying he was going to call police.
"He's the one who deserves a gold star," Swanick said. "He was very alert to what was going on. He felt she was trying to keep him distracted."
Guido dropped the machine in the parking lot and he and Campbell peeled off in a brown Ford pickup truck. Police stopped and arrested the two at 2:33 p.m. as they drove north on Rte. 27.
After they were arrested, Guido tried to protect Campbell.
"When they came in (to the station) he said it was all him, that she had nothing to do with it," Swanick said.
"(Guido) claims that he didn't know (the espresso machine) was worth so much money," Swanick said. "He said he wanted to be able to make his girlfriend some coffee in the morning."
The store manager said Guido couldn't have targeted a pricier piece of equipment.
"They took the most expensive item we can sell," said Noyhovich, 24, of Natick. "It's a really nice machine. They should definitely go to jail."
(Boston Herald writer Kristin Erekson contributed to this report.

Building an online directory for Organic/Fair Trade coffee --need help!

Hey y'all,

I'm helping to build an online directory to sources for Organic/Fair Trade brewed coffee for a new grass-roots organic network.

We are looking for places where one can count on getting organic and/or fair trade brewed coffee ANY day of the week --not just randomly or on a rotating schedule with a dozen other varieties etc. Markets, cafes and coffee houses in this directory have made a point of spending more money to bring us a better brew & bring a little economic justice to coffee growers --often while charging less than the national chain outfits.

If you have a favorite place that you would like to see get some props & hopefully direct some business away from places that sound like "Four Bucks," you can either post the info here or visit the new site & enter info on easy form:

www.foow.org/omeanso/coffeedirectory

I can also be reached by email at
omeanso@foow.org

Cheers & be well,
J. Pierre Reville

Uses for coffee grounds

On a homemade beauty remedies tribe, someone said that they use coffee grounds as a facial scrub. I tried it, and it was really good! At my house we use old coffee grounds for fertilizer. Check this site out:

http://www.sustainableenterprises.com/Business/coffeefert.htm

Since we have coffee grounds in abundance, does anyone have any other uses for coffee grounds?

I tried and tried to quit coffee....I thought that it was making me sick....giving me a crazy anxious feeling after drinking 2 cups. (I used to drink a pot fine).
Now, for the past few weeks...I was drinking green tea and earl grey instead.
I love my tea but missed my coffee terribly.
I wanted to drink it with a burning desire...
I bought some organic sumatra coffee from a friend's suggestion and valla!...I am back in coffee heaven....now I can get back on this tribe and sing the song of a coffee lover!
YAY!

Now there's a way to find coffeehouses, those few brave and stalwart indy shops that still remain that aren't Starbucks (or Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf or Peet's Coffee & Tea, or etc.): The Delocator.

Delocator will find non-giant, non-faceless corporation-owned coffeehouses within five miles of your ZIP code.

Well, I haven't tried Illy, but I hear they have a great decaf. After my ulcer, caffeine is not in the cards for me!!! In my pursuit of good coffee without the caffeine, I have failed miserably! I am hoping someone out there will share their devine wisdom of decaf so I may once again enjoy the love and rituals of coffee without the excruciating pains in my tummy!!!

Making coffee with my son~

So it is 6:30 and I am sleepy...Dinner is in the oven and I am sewing my Costume for the Bellydance Extravaganza performance coming up. I am beat and decide that an evening cup of coffee would hit the spot. I love coffee, live my mornings with coffee for the past 8 years...but I haven't had evening coffee since my spanish class all night studies in college 8 years ago....(that was when I started drinking coffee). Now I am making a small pot and my 12 year old son pipes up that he would like a cup. Hmmm.... I don't see why not. It's a Friday night. So I make him a cup of coffee and ask him what he would like in it....cream and sugar please. It might seem a bit insignificant but it was really neat-o to sit and share a cup of coffee with my "older" boy. He knows how he likes his coffee and enjoys a good conversation with me as well. What a cool evening!
Just thought to share that :D
Cheers~

We're roasting this variety as a 'spotlight coffee' at Alakef this month.

Sulawesi is a small growing region in the South Pacific near Sumatra and Java.

It's rich, with a bit of spiciness and a good earthy body. No acidity, and a great rich flavor in the cup...

Holy crap! New great coffee in SF! (See disclaimer too)

GO GO GO to Cafe lo Cubano on California St. in SF. It's walking distance from my house, and my life will never be the same.

It's cuban-style coffee & espresso, meaning they sugar it (not that it's in violation of a trade embargo). You can also get stuff unsweetened, but FER THE LOVE O'GOD try it the regular way first.

NOW I have always been a sugar-disdainer in coffee (if I wanted sweet, I'd get coffee ice cream....MMMmmmmm) but their cortaditos are frikin' amazing.

**DISCLAIMER** It's actually incredibly fantastic, but it's *intermittently* incredibly fantastic. Some of their baristas are just more, well, inspired than others. If you get something that makes you go, "Hmm, what the heck was Laura so excited about?" give it one more chance with a different barista. You wont be sorry.

It is the worst coffee I have ever had! Except for maybe the coffee at Dennys! I then began to wonder if it is kind of like the meatloaf comfort food of coffees. Anyone care to elaborate?

Non-Comformists

So I was just watching Southpark tonight and this is the episode that came up... Got me thinking of here...

------

Goth 2: If you wanna be one of the non-conformists, all you have to do is dress just like us and listen to the same music we do.

------

[Benny's, night. "We're always open." The Goth kids are seated at a booth drinking coffee. A middle-aged waitress walks by with a pot of coffee]

Goth 2:	Hey, can we get more coffee over here?

Waitress:	Damnit, are you kids just gonna sit here all night again and drink six dollars' work of coffee?! Why don't you get a life?! [walks away]

Goth 2:	[bitterly] Conformist. Have fun in your rat-race life, living paycheck to paycheck for corporate gains.

Other Goths:	Yeah.

Goth 1:	[to Stan] Dude, you haven't drank your coffee. [his hair falls over his face, he jerks his head back]

Stan:	Well I don't drink coffee.

Goth 1:	You can't be a non-conformist if you don't drink coffee. [Stan picks up his mug and drinks. Kyle enters the restaurant and approaches Stan's booth]

---------

So does that mean I'm a conformist since I don't drink coffee?

Oh Coffee, dear coffee
You are a gift
Bitter and dark
Yummy with milk
Yummy with cream
I like you sweet
You steal my sleep
and my heart.

Oh Coffee, dear coffee
You wake me up
You keep me
All through my classes
and Nietzsche.
Coffee.
Oh Coffee.
You are the best
Now I must rest
'Til you fill my cup once again.

So while gazing out the window of our office last week, my co-workers and I noticed a new sign on the building across the road: Specialty Coffee Association of America

As you can imagine, we were intrigued. A wander over there led us to discover that the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) is not a coffee house (darn!), but an organization based on rating and promoting specialty coffees, and researching coffee varieties, strains, and various methods of coffee preparation. They have a school to train baristas, and even a coffee librarian with her own coffee research library. they also publish a few trade magazines a year. Check them out: www.scaa.org

About Specialty Grade Coffees:
Sometimes called "gourmet" or "premium" coffee, Specialty Coffees are made from exceptional beans grown only in ideal coffee-producing climates over 3,500 feet. They tend to feature distinctive flavors, which are shaped by the unique characteristics of the soil that produces them.

Starbuck's vs. Peat's

I hope i spelt Peats right, cus this is going to go for a will...

So hears the rummer;
As Starbuck's becoms the big bad guy, some custemers will naturaly want to go with the underdog. Peat's coffee is that underdog. The butifull fact is the owners of both franchises were child hood buddys and continue to be.
Makes you think... Hmmmm

Coors Bear created smaler labels to grab the aternetive market, but you can read in to there marketing tackteck... it's writen right on the lable, "a sub-company of Coors"
Is this another way for Starbuck's to grab the counter culture of Starbuck rebels? There is no recored of Starbuck investing in Peat's Coffee... yet there is no Sterbuck's moving in to Peat's market and visaversa...

Or is this just two good old friends playing in the sand box.

I dont want to see any speculation posted on this subject. Go out to the land of Google and get some facts.
