I'm moving from Virginia to the Athens area, and I was wondering what the belly dance scene was like around there. I've been a student of the same teacher, Kawakib, in Virginia for over 5 years now, so it's really sad for me to be leaving her classes and all of my fellow students. Kawakib teaches Egyptian style, folkloric and Tribal Odyssey, which is a group improvisation style she developed. I also organized a charity dance team here, Bellies for Breasts. So I'm leaving a lot of great dancers and good friends behind.
We leave the first of April-yikes!- and I know I probably won't look into classes immediately-- will have to get settled first.

Re: Moving to Georgia
Mon, March 16, 2009 - 9:39 AMThe Atlanta scene is great! There are a lot of talented dancers here as well as plenty of events and workshops to attend. If you're interested in charity work through bellydance, Kira will be hosting Shimmy-a-thon this year - It's a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I think it'll be in it's 4th(?) year.
I'm not sure what teachers are up in Athens anymore. I know there's Fatina and Christy. A bit farther south you have myself in Lawrenceville, Ramona in Duluth, and Zuhra in Suwanne. As you get into Atlanta you have Zi'ah, Aziza Nawal, Gina, Amani, and many, many more talented women!
Good luck with the move and welcome! -

Fri, March 20, 2009 - 4:38 AMThanks for the welcomes! Once I get settled in, I'll start looking for a class that works for me. I've only taken lessons from two teachers, and I've taken classes from Kawakib (Anthea) for the longest. It's going to be weird to be in totally new classes w/ new people. But I bet it will be fun and I'm looking forward to meeting new dancers.
I'd love to take classes with Zi'ah-- I love Awalim-- but I have to see about the drive to Atlanta...
Tahnks for the heads up on upcoming events. I hope to make it to them.

Re: Moving to Georgia
Mon, March 16, 2009 - 10:28 AMHI Rajni!
We met at Darbukastan a few summers ago. Great to hear you are moving to town. It's always fun to have new dancers in our scene.
I've been on hiatus for the last two years. But, I'll be finishing up grad school in a few months and plan to return to teaching and performing with Sulukule. In the meantime there are quite a few bellydance instructors in town. Most of them are beginner level. And the Atlanta scene is just overflowing with incredible talent. SC is not too far away from Athens and there are some great dancers there also.
happy traveling! Christy -

Re: Moving to Georgia
Tue, March 17, 2009 - 9:30 AMHey Rajni,
I am glad to hear that you are moving to our wonderful town of Athens!! There are lots of classes here in the Classic City that you can attend after settling in. Aside from that, Atlanta is just a short jaunt down the road (about an hour) where there are tons of classes, egyptian or otherwise. Also, in case you are interested, there will be a belly dance show on April the 30th at the 40 Watt, a venue in Athens, where you will be able to see some of our local teachers in action. Once all the details of the show are finalized, I will put a formal post up on Tribe ;)
happy shimmies!!
