Monday Night Indoor Hoop Jams by Donation, Berkeley

Hi Everyone :)

I'm experimenting with the idea of hosting a few Monday night hoop jams at Studio 12 in Berkeley (2525 8th Street). Starting on 9/21, I will be hosting these jams "by donation" just to cover the cost of the space rental. At this moment, I have the space from 8:00-9:15, but if enough people tell me that they will be there, I will ask the owner to extend our time.

The only hitch is that the space is PRISTINE, so only non-marking hoops will be allowed in the space. I will provide a wide variety of hoops (different sizes, different tubing) for use in the studio, but know that you might not be able to use your "favorite" hoop in the space. LED hoops with non-marking tape or no tape are welcome.

Let me know if you'd be interested, so I can get to work on extending our time :)

My name's Samantha and I'm a full time college student who's been hooping for about eight months now. I'm looking to purchase my first LED hoop but the prices... OUCH! I was wondering if any of you loveley hoopers out there would be interested in letting one or two go? I just want one that lights up and works, preferably around 38" and rechargeable but I will take pretty much anything that fits within my price range. Please let me know if you or anyone you know is willing, I will meet up with in person or pay for shipping as well, whatever works best for you =D

Does anyone have ideas on where to find hoop tubing?

I've been looking since before I even started hooping, about six months ago. I got a tip that I could find some at the LOWE'S in Livermore, I called in advance just to make sure, and they said they did. So, after I drove all the way from Concord to go get the tubing, almost getting my little two door hundi excel run over by multiple semi-trucks, and much frustration they didn't even have it! I was so furious. Let alone I had never even seen a "real" hoopdance hoop and allowed the salesmen talk me into tubing I don't need and couldn't use. After this fiasco I started buying my hoops off of a local hoop maker from Oakland, but I'm ready to be doing them myself.

Would anyone be willing to give me some advice on where I can find this elusive tubing?

just a heads up that there is a great event that has been happening in downtown oakland called ECSTATIC DANCE that is hooper-friendly. sunday mornings from 10:30 - 1:00 and Wednesday nights from 7:45-10:30, Ecstatic Dance welcomes body movers of all shapes kinds and sizes to participate in stretching and dancing your ass off. no talking on the dancefloor, no bar, no booze, no pretense.

hooping is welcome as long as it does not interrupt other dancers (usually along the sides/edges), so this is NOT a hooping-centric event and you can't really just hoop wherever you want to (although i've never had an issue), but i thought y'all would be interested if you haven't been yet.

it's a great community and a really nice alternative to the club scene.

YAY! An indoor Saturday jam for our East Bay hoop community! December's jams are experimental on two fronts: 1) Will you, members of the East Bay hoop community, support a Saturday hoop jam? And 2) Is 7th Heaven a large enough space for us to hold such a jam?

I am going to try to hook up with a couple hoopers this Wednesday at Lake Merritt on the lunch hour, so here's a heads-up in case you are feeling a spontaneous hoop coming on and can join us...

Stay tuned for the exact time + place, but it will most likely be around 1pm or 1:30pm at the SW side of Lake Merritt @ Oak St. and 14th -- (OR Snow Park where we met last BAH we hooped the East Bay @ Harrison and 19th. Either one is by a BART station.)

We'll go for about an hour or so, I'll bring a CD player and hope it's loud enough!

Collapsible or travel hoops

Can anyone give me any advice on buying a collapsible/travel hoop? I see that people either sell the kind that you can pull apart into several different pieces or the kind that coil into a smaller size. I'm curious if one is superior to the other.

Hi Hoopers!

As I have been in a position to hear students' murmurs of desire for weekly hoop events, I am encouraging you, yes YOU, to organize a lil' hoop somethin' somethin' in your area.

There is demand for hoop socials! Other hoopers SO want to get together with YOU and hoop it up somewhere in the East Bay.

I've heard students say that the East Bay Hoopers Tribe doesn't seem to have much happening, and yet they want something to be happening, so go for it! Post an event!

Here are some good locations for hooping: Berkeley Civic Center (my fav.) where they have the farmers market; Willard Park; Live Oak Park (although not flat). There are other locations as well. Feel free to list 'em and when you will be hooping there.

On Saturdays at the Berk. Civic Center, the acroyogis get together around 2 to play acroyoga. Maybe we can designate that as a good time for hooping there also? I have a sound system, and will bring it when I come, however I won't be there every week. If you have a portable sound system for hoop jammin' please come forward if you'd like to share it some days at a jam.

BAH in East Bay today! Sun. 5/18

Hello Hoopers!

It's time we do some hooping in the East Bay. This Sunday from 2-4pm we will be at Mosswood Park in Oakland. It is very close to the MacArthur bart station. I hope to see you there, if you can make it out to the East Bay!

Here are the directions:

Mosswood Park, Oakland
Corner of MacArthur and Broadway, right by Kaiser/Oakland and the Sawmill.
From Buses:
51 and 57 stop at the park
From BART:
At MacArthur Station, walk up MacArthur to park (5-10 minute walk)
From SF/S Bay:
After Bay Bridge, take 580 towards Hayward. Get in left lane immediately! Take first left exit, which is MacArthur. Follow MacArthur on the right to Mosswood. Turn right on Webster and circle around back for parking.
From East Bay:
Take Shattuck or Telegraph south to MacArthur. Left onto MacArthur. Turn right on street before Broadway (Webster) if possible, as there is street and park parking there.

HoolieHoop will be hosting another exciting hoop jam at Studio 12 this
Sunday, April 13 from 1:15 to 2:15. The hoop jam is an open forum for all
levels and ages and it is a great opportunity to share and learn from
other hoopers.

Hoop jams are perfect for those interested in hoop dance and looking to
try it out and for hoopers who enjoy company while hoopin!

Hoop jams are not formal and full of fun! A Hooliehoop instructor will be
there every week to answer any questions you may have and will be
available to give basic tips.

Hoops in Elephant

I knew that Elephant was carrying the DanceHoop by Gaiam, but when I walked into the Berkeley store tonight the very first thing I saw were some giant hoops striped like how we'd tape them. They were called Therahoops or something like that. Has anyone else noticed these?

We are finally bringing the original HoopGirl Workout classes up to East Bay! Help us find a studio and we will gift you with free classes!

The person who finds us a perfect location will get a FREE 6 week HoopGirl Workout Class series of your choice: Beginner I, Beginner II, Intermediate I or Intermediate II. That's 9 hours of hot hoop moves, sweat drenching dance and performance training by a Licensed HoopGirl Workout instructor, valued at $180!

What we seek: A studio which is at least which is at least 1500 square feet in Berkeley where no hoop classes are currently taking place. This space would have a sound system we can plug our microphone and I-pod into. This space would preferably have mirrors and regularly be available on Tuesday or Thursdays nights for an hour and a half between 6-10pm.
