For Immediate Release: Chapel of Sacred Mirrors leaves NYC,
CoSM Sanctuary to open in Wappinger, NY mid-2009.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors has been a sanctuary for contemplation and events encouraging the creative spirit in New York City since 2004. Hundreds of thousands of people have visited Alex and Allyson Grey’s living brochure; their vision of a permanent home, but the lease has ended. CoSM is pleased to announce the purchase of 40-acre former interfaith retreat campus, 65 miles up the Hudson River. It’s a 20-minute walk from the New Hamburg MetroNorth station or about an hour’s drive from NYC.

CoSM Sanctuary will offer spiritual gatherings; educational and cultural events emphasizing art as a spiritual practice. Visionary artists, musicians, dancers, scientists and teachers will share their wisdom here. Sun-filled galleries and libraries will provide meditative and contemplative space for the mind, body and soul. The chapel you have seen in sculpted model will be built for the artwork of Alex Grey and others.

CoSM Sanctuary has wonderful opportunities, but its upkeep was neglected for many years and its buildings have fallen into disrepair. With your help, this once-magnificent estate can be repurposed.

The brick carriage house will be converted to exhibit the Sacred Mirrors. A conference building will host art, meditation and yoga classes. A cabin in the woods will become a studio where artists-in-residence can paint and sculpt for the Chapel and beyond. The main house, a stunning wood-frame Victorian, needs extensive renovation to be weatherproof and energy-efficient. Simple, affordable overnight lodging and dining for up to 100 people will be available.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors is a 501(c)(3) organization, supported solely by donations from the community, which are deductible on income and estate taxes. Financial contributions and skilled volunteers are needed. An estimated two million dollars is required for renovation. There are tens of thousands of fans of Alex Grey and the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, just ten dollars from each can add up quickly.
You can donate online at http://cosm.org/donate.html
Or visit our web stores, at http://cosm.org/shop.html and http://www.alexgrey.com/shop.html, and buy a piece of art history.
Checks may be mailed to Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, PO Box 20668, N, NY 10011

If you have time and skills to offer in Wappinger, please write to our volunteer coordinator: cosm.art.sanctuary@gmail.com

If you can help us move art and furniture from NYC to Wappinger in January, please write to our move coordinator Mz. imani -
cosm.move.nyc@gmail.com

With your help, says founding artist Alex Grey, “We will create sacred space, a new center for creativity as a spiritual path.”

Thank you, and blessings.

Blanca posted this lovely explanation of how/why she and musician Carmine Guida put together their Drum Solo Workshop. Just thought I'd pass it along to you ~ Casey

Last year Carmine and I started talking about Drum Solos. Over lattes, we had many conversations about improvisation, performance and how Drum Solos are put together. We shared our own experiences from the viewpoint of a musician and a dancer, talked about how we found Drum Solos very challenging when we first started and noticed how often we've encountered students who are afraid of them.

Our conversations centered around ways to provide students with tools that would accelerate their training. We talked about ways to give in one workshop all the insights and techniques that we've come up with through our years performing. We taught our ideas in several cities in Mexico (we've been asked to go back and teach more) and will be teaching our first NYC workshop this Saturday.

Carmine believes that listening is an essential skill. For him it's not enough to tell the dancer to listen; he teaches what to listen for: cues, changes, hints... and of course, the rhythms.

Another one of the tools we'll be teaching is a series of connected phrases that the dancer can draw from as she improvises. As they become ingrained in the dancer's body, she no longer has to think about them when she is performing. By connecting the movement phrases with the rhythms, they become memorable and the dancer gets a clearer understanding of them.

In Carmine's words: "Often after I play for dancers, people from the audience will say: 'You and your wife were great!'
They see us so connected they assume we must live together and practice all the time. The trick is to make it look like we practiced even if we didn't. I really want to teach drummers and dancers how to do this".

We're both very excited about sharing this workshop and look forward to having fun with you this Saturday. There will be lots of "Ah ha!" moments and surprises!

Well, we had another great show at Sultana (formerly Banbalotto) in Williamsburgh on Saturday night. The place was packed and DragonSong could not join us this month due to a previous commitment so I had a fellow named "Sitar"Jon Hanley sit in on sitar. I wasn't certain how that was going to sound, but it was really good. I set up my digital recording station and was able to catch most of it and have already edited it into a CD (if anyone is interested). I will definitely be doing more work with this fellow.
We do this show every month and it is always a favorite. We get a lot of the same people in the audience each month and they look forward to it.
Shahrazad is a NY treasure and never disappoints. Shir-El is a NY treasure and never disappoints (try to catch her weekly show at West Ne in Bayside every Friday at 9:30 pm) and we were joined by Magdalena, Almaz, Tanya, Julissa, Jennie and I even got a drum into Iman's hands for a bit.
This is a real big show and it happens on the third or fourth Saturday of every month (depending on holidays, it's usually the third Saturday). So come on by for our next show and enjoy a hookah and some turkish coffee and if you want, have a few drinks at the bar and be charmed by some of the best belly dancing you can see.

Come on over and see us.We will probably be performing all around the fair during the day and also on the main stage at different times. Casey and I have performed at this fair in the past and it is one of the better Ren Fairs, so if you are in the mood to be charmed by a day of medieval and renaissance romance, grab your family and come on over. If you haven't been to the Cloisters, you must. It is one of NYC's treasures. We hope to see you there.

Last year, Raquy had us study a piece that she wrote called "MoonDance" and we loved it. We took a couple of the rhythms that she used in "Moondance". added a few of our own and we performed it there in a casual setting with a small audience. It is really intended as a tribute to Raquy and all that she has done to inspire other musicians (and she said that she liked it... yay!). Check it out:
Barushka is hosting the second annual Tribal Bonfire in New Paltz on July 22nd! So far pre-registration has been slow, so please sign up as soon as you can to make this event happen!

Workshops by Vadalna, Trisha McBride, East Winds Tribal Drumming, Perizad of Twisted Tassels, Joy Herbst, Bollywood fusion with Dipal Shah and more. Nice prices on the workshops!

Vadalna will be teaching a sword and fire candle tray balancing workshop, candles are a new thing for most not NYC based dancers so if you've ever wanted to learn it, this is your chance, we'll give you a bunch of tricks of the trade to help you skip over finding out the hard way kinda mishaps :-) We're also offering optional pre-order sword and tray packages so that you're good to go. Several workshops participants from our last NYC workshop are now regularly incorporating these props into their shows. It's great for group work and fantastic for solo fusion and cabaret dances. If you're interested in purchasing props please let us know now since we need to place an order this week :-) You can check out Vadalna doing a candle duet on youtube...is the quality crap? sure it is! it's youtube! but it's a live music candle improv to Djinn...is it hard to improv with a tray of candles on your head? you betcha, but we'll teach you how :-)

Tribal performances, vending, hanging out, workshops, and a bonfire with drummers? Hells yeah!

Please check out www.tribalbonfire.com for all the details and to register.

For anyone who wants to join Eastwinds Tribal Drumming's pre-registered group "Beach Blanket Beledi" at the 25th Annual Mermaid Parade this Saturday , June 23rd in Coney Island, Brooklyn:

Here are some important details:

Cost: YES!!!! there is a $10 per person fee to march.. (There may be a discount if we get a large number...if that happens, it'll be a happy surprise! Plan on $10 just to be sure, ok?!) Our pre-registered group, which is called "BEACH BLANKET BELEDI," welcomes anybody and everybody OVER 18. Please note: Jeff & I are not making any money on this whatsoever-all fees go to the Mermaid Parade, to support the insanity that is Coney Island.

Time: Jeff & I will be there at 10 A.M. because I'm an anal retentive control freak...and... we want to make sure we get a good marching "spot" (not too close to anybody else's music, fer example.) We will be leading the ME percussion - we'd encourage the drummers to meet us no later than 1 pm... or not.. We would appreciate RIQ players...but any percussion is good. Remember...long parade, hot sun...plan ahead, my darlings!!!! Dancers can show up whenever the heck you like...it's all good! Just make sure you sign in and pay the nice Mermaid Parade folks. (BTW, zills...always a good parade idea!)

Finding us: I'll be l be dressed in Pirate/ Tribal garb, and wearing a small davul and a big smile. Jeff will be the big piratety-looking guy playing the AWESOME lead doumbek riffs. If anybody wants to make/carry a "Beach Blanket Beladi" sign, go for it! It's really crowded...you might want to arrive before 1pm...(Casey's left eye starts to twitch in anticipation of people showing up whenever they want..) Seriously, you REALLY might consider 1:15 at the very latest (noticible tremor starts in upper lip area.)

WARNING: Every year, some girls parade in pasties and other burlesque-style attire. There may be girls who will be scantily clad in our merry little band. Our group is strictly for OVER 18. Additionally, "Sheik of Araby" and "Gotta Go Back to Constantinople" way be spontaneously played on kazoo. Ok, you've been warned!

Questions??? Holla back on Tribe or to DrumNdancegrl@aol.com. See you on Saturday!

Every audition was good...it was not a matter of choosing those with the best technique, but of HOW the program best fit together...and I had a select small amount of slots to fill! Really, it was difficult, but I say to those of you who did audition to please not be discouraged, because really, if I had more money and maybe another hour, you all would be in this show. All are lovely.....

Ok, so without further ado:

Romka - DC
Valdana NYC
Sina - CA
Ariellah CA
Morocco (yes, the grand dame Morocco) NYC
Aepril Schaille - ME
Crystal Dunlap - MI
Sera and Solstice NYC
Sarah Locke - NYC
Serpentina - NYC
Joharra and Cairo - NYC
ChoveXani - NYC

With the stylings of Jeff Web and Casey Bond. of EastWinds Tribal......drumming! (YAY! THAT WOULD BE US!!!)

And additional musical interludes from the recordings of Maduro, who specifically created this magic for our show
(bowing heavily to you guys! Thank You!)

More entertainment for your buck! We are also EXTENDING the $30 Tix rate to Aug 1st! After that, prices go up!

Again, thank you all for participating! You continue to make this small dream of mine happen and I encourage you to keep dreaming: dream all you Dreamers

just spoke with the owner of a bar & restaurant in Yonkers. He would be pleased to host a weekly bellydance /drum jam/workshop night. We're thinking monday or tuesday eves starting 9-ish. business is slow so he's eager to accomodate. The menu is Italian and Mexican and the kitchen is always open.

I'm interested in collaborating with other musicians who want to learn traditional music, rhythms and improve skills, (as opposed to the informal tribal drum jam) kind of like a workshop. As for dancers, whatever works for you.

For those of you in the New York City area, please come by on June 10th at 4:00 pm to the Lafayette Grill and Bar,54-56 Franklin Street (between Broadway and Lafayette, and 3 blocks south of Canal Street). It's Shahrazad's birthday party and student showcase and Eastwinds Tribal Drumming will be playing the rhythms. This will be a jam packed time of great performances. Besides Shahrazad and The Arabian Nights, there will be performances by Bashira, Magdalena, Asalai Naimah, Delicia, Bahaya and Diana. It's only $10 admission and a minimum of $15 on food (the food is real good) so why not mark your calendar and join us?
On July 22nd in New Paltz New York we will be performing and offering a workshop on "The Drum Solo" at "Tribal Bonfire". This is a major event and will attract some of the best dancers and musicians (as well as vendors) from the East Coast. The creative force behind this event is that wonderful tribal bellydancer and photographer Barushka. So watch this space for more information on this great event.

Now....... hold onto your hats! Eastwinds Tribal Drumming will be hosting a major performance event in Midtown Manhattan this Fall/early Winter. The line-up of talent is incredible. Any one of these acts is a headliner worthy of a show of their own and they will all be there in one place. This is a teaser, I can't give the details yet because we still have a lot of legwork to do, but watch this space for all of the details. This is going to happen and it will be spectacular!!

September promises to be a month worth looking forward to. "Night of 1000 Godesses #2" is going to happen with two shows on September 16th. If you missed the first one last September you can stop torturing yourself now and mark your calendars and BE THERE!
This show was THE BOMB! It's happening again..... you can be a part of it..... you'll be sorry if you miss it! The talent line-up is awesome and our beloved Zan Asha and Chovexani will be performing as well as running the whole show..... Eastwinds Tribal Drumming will be there to help and participate.

Check out the Bellydance Parade this Saturday in NYC. Casey Bond of Eastwinds will be drumming for our "adopted" daughters of Manhattan Tribal led by those dynamos of Vadalna (Mimi and Naraya). I'm going to miss it because I have another obligation, but the prettier half of Eastwinds will be there. You have to see this..... and it's free.

The New York Bellydance scene is a great community of people. What a priviledge it is to be a part of it.

Hey Everyone!
Carmine & I recorded 12 tunes for practicing purposes. We call it: Simplified Middle Eastern Songs for Learning and Practice.
All 12 of the mp3s can be purchased and downloaded for 1 dollar each at www.dorku.com No wailing clarinet taksims, 5 minute oudsterbation intros, wacky complicated drumming, or drunken singing to distract from your learning experience. The songs are plain and straightforward. Just melody and just the basic rhythm. The perfect companion to the sheet music available at www.dorku.com. ~Melissa

There was plenty of really good food and time allowed to enjoy it. The entertainment was well planned and spaced out with solo performances alternating with troupe performances. There were a couple of nice long intermissions allowing the participants to eat, shop and socialize as well as dance to either live drumming (which we were flattered to provide) or recorded music spun by the DJ.
Each act was wonderful and had something to offer. There were absolutely NO bad performances or mishaps and some of the performances were so "top notch" that you'd expect to see them only at a large venue with a high ticket price.
The atmosphere was very friendly and encouraging and everyone had a good time and went home with some very fond memories.
A real class act.

She'll be running more haflas in the Hudson Valley area, so keep your eyes peeled for the next one.

Here in NY where Casey and I live the thermometers have been bursting and shooting out the top. There is a woman that put a baking tray of tollhouse cookie dough cookies on her dashboard when she went into work and when she came out to go home, the cookies were baked and she said the car smelled great (supposedly a true story).
We are looking forward to our trip west to the "Pennsic War" where it will hopefully be cooler (temperature that is, because Pennsic is always HOT!!) We hope to see a lot of you there. The music and drumming has progressively become better and better over the years and the circles around the fire can brag about some pretty incredible drumming and dancing. We will be gone until the evening of August 20th and then we'll be back home again and will be back on the internet. We don't have wireless connections, Casey's got a big old ark of a tower pc and I have three big cumbersome Macs, so when we're on the road, we're not on the internet. But if you put your ear to the ground and hear some joyful thumping coming from the area around Slippery Rock, PA, you'll know that Eastwinds brought our flavor west, and we more than likely met up with a bunch of fellow "likeminded" rhythm nuts.

Just in case, ................ I purchased a camp air conditioner for our tent. Sure, when you get a bit older certain things may not work the way they used to, but the brain gains experience, and a camping air conditioner is a good thing. :-)

Hello Everyone!

Thanks for your patience, I'm finally starting up dance classes at a studio in Manhattan. I'll be teaching basic bellydance technique which will be used as a strong foundation for both Tribal and Classic belly dance styles on Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm at 440 Studios this will run in a six week session.

On Sundays from 2-3 I'm teaching an advanced beginner and up class with the emphasis on Classic Tribal and Tribal Fusion (this class will cover cueing and group improv along with more advanced movements and isolations) This class is good if you have some belly dance training already and I will be breaking down the difference between cabaet and tribal moves. If you are a cabaret trained dancer interested in "tribalizing" your dance, this class will help do that.

Both classes will be ongoing

Classes will be $15, and I will have class cards available at a discounted rate of $78 for 6 classes (brings it down to $13 per class and you can use the cards for any of my 440 Studio Classes)

I also accept credit cards through Paypal with a nominal service fee of $3.00.

Details below:

Wednesdays 6-7 pm (August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 & Sept. 6)
440 Studios
440 Lafayette Street @ Astor Place (right across from Joe's Pub & next to Blue Man Group) Studio .. 3A
Belly Dance Basics - emphasis on technique for Classic and Tribal belly dance
$15. per class

Sundays 2-3 pm (August13, 20, 27 & Sept 3, 10 & 24th (no class on the 17th)
440 Studios
440 Lafayette Street @ Astor Place Studio ..3A
Advanced Beginner & Up

Please contact me if you're interested as I'd like to get an idea of how many people will be taking class, but you can also just show up :-)

I hope you will enjoy yourselves here and post topics that will interest, educate and amuse all the fine people that pass this way. We (Casey Bond and me, Jeff Webb) have gained a lot of new friends on tribe.net and have made some wonderful contacts and we would like an opportunity to share some of our news with you on our own tribe site.
If you have an event that you would like to publicize and it relates to the interests of the tribe members here, please feel free to post it.
If you have questions about drums or drumming, please ask. If you have seen a wonderful performance or know of one coming up, by all means please post it.
If you want to compliment a wonderful musician, dancer or entire performance, this is the place to do it. Besides being performers ourselves, Casey and I are avid fans of this art form and can always be seen cheering on performers. We are a great audience 'cause we love it.
And.........if you should need a couple of dancer friendly drummers, shoot us a message :-)
