Cow trouble!

I had mentioned in another tribe that I have had problems in the past with cows at Wildcat Canyon. Has anyone else had this or problems at other parks? Both of these times, calves were around, maybe they were just protecting them...the second instance was REALLY SCARY!

About 1.5 years ago, a friend and I had our 3 dogs (all off leash) and were looking around the area where the insane asylum used to be. there were a lot of cows hanging out and I don't remember how it started, but all of the sudden, we realized one of the cows was running at us. We grabbed our dogs, I put my hand up and yelled at the cow to stop. Luckily, it did and we were able to scram. It kind of followed us and was acting territorial, but not aggressive at this point.

I went back about 6 months later and avoided that area. i was by myself. I was heading up a steep trail cutting through the middle of the park...way out there. I saw that I was coming up to a cluster of cows that were spread out across the trail, so I put my dogs on leash, figuring that would be safer. As I approached, the cows cleared the trail, but they were on either side. I opted toward wishful thinking (partly because of the difficulty of terrain and because my dogs were on leash), since the cows had cleared the path, they were giving me permission to get through, right? No, once I got near by (the cows were now ABOVE me) since the fire road was set below, one of the cows started eyeing me. I tried yelling at it and putting my hand up, as I had done 6 months ago to try and pass, but as I moved another step forward, it dug its front hoof into the ground and snorted. I knew that this was a sign that it may charge me. I took a few steps back and it started running at me. I put my hand up and yelled and it stopped. I took a very long way around, part of which I think I had to practically crawl it was so steep!

When I left the park, there was a ebrp police person in the lot. I filed a report with him. He was very nice and has a dog, too. He said that the cows managers would want to know. I avoided going back there until about a month ago. i have never had a problem at another park like this and I haven't heard of others having a problem at Wildcat...anyone else have cow stories?

I guess it was a bull...it did have horns, very small ones. You will find cows in many east bay parks including Wildcat Canyon, Sibley, Las Trampas and Briones. Again, I've never had a problem with them except at Wildcat. I can't imagine playing with a cow!!

ahh yeah, bulls then, that would be a little scary. cows on the other hand are so cute, we had some when i was a kid, i think they got turned into steaks without my knowledge and i probably ate them, last time i name my cows lol
