Porcupine is a more rock ablum if you will. Ocean Rain is a bit more mellow. If you listen to Ocean Rain you will not hear any drumsticks used on any of the tracks. Pete de Freitas used brushes on all tracks.

          Hi,

Have you seen that their albums have been remastered & reissued on CD with bonus tracks? I just bought "Ocean Rain", "Heaven Up Here" & "Echo & the Bunnymen" (the grey album) for $10.99 each. They each have 7-10 extra songs. Nice price with cool extras!

I heard that they were out. It's weird, I spent so many years hunting though record bins and fairs, scanning Goldmine for those weird mispressings and b-sides, and then the box set comes out and collects almost all of them! and now these remasters. Are all the extra tracks also on the box set?

Porcupine is E&TB's finest hour. The production by Ian Broudie is psychedelic - judiciuous use of tape echo low in the mix - everything set to infinite repeat. If you ingest any interesting chemicals I highly recommend listening to this great album. I really think it's their best.

my favorite still remains heaven up here-the first three feel like a sonic trilogy of some sort. even when i hadn't listened to it in years, i could still reproduce the ominously impelling rythyms, sargents atmospheric soaring and the apocalyptic mood. all my colours is perfect.

porqupine definitely has some equally powerful tracks on it-i think it is just the emotional sequence/continuity of the above mentioned songs that make me like heaven just a bit better. but get porqupine, particularly with the extra tracks, and you will have the essential bunnymen.

hmmm....its odd that reviews list porcupine as their best....it has always been my favorite, but no one else i know likes hat album. i work at a record store and told my coworkers that that was my favorite echo and the bunnymen album and they looked at me like i was crazy and said "thats no ones favorite album".....i guess they're the crazy ones.

i just got a promo of the new album, syberia.....i haven't listened to it yet, but i'll be sure to let everyone know my take on it.

How can any one Echo album be 'better'...Crocodiles and Heaven Up Here can't be counted out away from Ocean Rain & Porcupine. And what about the Cutter E.P. with a cover of 'Painted Black' and 'All you need is Love', those are priceless and uncomparable also...

Or the 12" of the Killing Moon with the extended song backed by a full string section...

I'd really scratched my head when the first album of the "new" Bunnymen came out in and then I had a second listen and it was just as good. Not the same, but just as good.

Personally I can't say I've heard a crap album out of them yet.

One of my first shows was the Echo & The Bunnymen/New Order tour - I wasn't old enough to drive yet and knew no one (at least that would hang out with a high school freshman) that would go and had a drivers license. So I made my dad drive me. He took one look at the crowd when dropping me off and kept muttering to himself, "Look at all these freaks..."

wow, that's a rad first show. i'm jealous!

i'm too embarrassed to even admit what my first show was.

Sadly, Gene Loves Jezebel was the opening act...

The first time I saw E&tBM after they got back together was at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, which is a great venue... The weird thing was that I don't think the band was at it's optimal. It was winter (I know, winter in Los Angeles is an oxymoron) and actually cold for Southern California... It was strange seeing the new drummer with a BIG drum kit and if I remember right, there was someone extra on another guitar... Ian was bundled up in a trench coat and sounded like he had a head cold and just wasn't sustaining the notes like he used to... They did do Over The Wall, which was great to see live.

Unfortunately, comparing that show to seeing them at what could be considered their peak left me kind of sad... But I listened to all their albums in a row and the new material and that made me feel better. Not every show can be the best show ever.

i have never seen the bunnymen live....my first show was the eurythmics, at the 9:30 club in d.c., 1983ish.

first musical purchase? i was in 8th grade and bought an 8-track (!) of heart. i was smitten with the single, "barracuda". my second was the beach boys greatest hits. :)
