eek!
i have a few covers with the dragonfly pattern on them and the material seems a little bit different from those that are solid colors or the one with the dinosaurs. i've noticed that these leak straight through.... any hope of waterproofing them once again or do you think they just might have finally worn down after a year plus of use?
i only have two so replacing them with solids won't kill me, but it would be nice to continue using them....

Re: a few of my bumwear covers are no longer waterproof!!
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 4:43 PMsomeone mentioned some waterproofing spray you can get at an outdoorsy store. I can't remember what it's called. -

Mon, February 25, 2008 - 6:47 PMNikwax is a spray, but there's a tablet you throw in the wash to waterproof the load. Check REI -

Re: a few of my bumwear covers are no longer waterproof!!
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 8:39 PMsince it's for the cover i think i would use the spray (i only want the outside panel waterproofed).
have you used the nikwax? -

Re: a few of my bumwear covers are no longer waterproof!!
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 8:27 AMI've used nikwax on my ski gear and camping gear which is theoretically already waterproof but as any outdoors person can tell you, waterproofing is a hope rather than a promise.
it seemed to work, and the bottle lasts forever- it doesn't take much at all. Hell, if i wasn't so lazy i'd send you our 3/4 full bottle

Mon, February 25, 2008 - 8:58 PMhave you stripped your diapers in a while?
build up of detergent can cause diapers to repell. -

Re: a few of my bumwear covers are no longer waterproof!!
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 9:19 PMit's the outside of the covers, not the fleece inside. they just soak straight through. is that repelling? -

Re: a few of my bumwear covers are no longer waterproof!!
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 7:42 PMDude do not use nikwax on pocket diapers. That is assuming that is what you speak of when you say bumwear covers. It will come off in the wash and clog up the fleece or make it shed water = bad. I bet the PUL has cracks in it. One of our Fuzzi Bunz developed a spot like this and you can see it if you look inside the pocket. The shiny water proof layer has cracks it it. Luckily the spot is high up and near the snap flap so it doesn't really affect the diaper too much. I'd say that depending on the location of the leakage the diapers might be toast. Or maybe you will just have to change the affected diapers more frequently so they don't leak. -

Re: a few of my bumwear covers are no longer waterproof!!
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 8:21 PMyep, that's what i speak of. i think they ARE toast. i can't see any visible spot where they have specifically cracked or worn down -- the material just feels flimsy and thin now. and sadly, i have 3 if not 4 that are like this and the price has gone up to $25per!! aiee!
i did email the company though so we'll see if they ever respond to me, and what they will say if/when they do.
as or changing her more frequently, she is a serious pee machine so i already change her every few hours. that unfortunately isn't going to solve much, although i suppose i could look into hemp liners -- those are more absorbent than terry, right? -

Tue, February 26, 2008 - 8:35 PMI hear bamboo is even more absorbent. -

Re: a few of my bumwear covers are no longer waterproof!!
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 8:41 PMAlso for one sized pockets i'd check out haute pockets. They are all over the net for 13.95 with inserts. We have 19 of them and they are awesome, they got cute little elephants on the bum patch (label). We like them and I think they would fit a newborn nicely as well as a toddler. I just got the recent issue of Mothering Magazine in the mail and there are several articles on the amazing world of cloth diapers these days. Any whoo there were these new one sized pockets called Blueberry's and they are really frickin cute and they have a free sample trial offer. www.blueberrysample.com. If I was having a new baby or had the slightest excuse to buy new diapers I would be all over these polka dotted or leopard printed one sized pockets. Oh my I'm such a cloth diaper fanatic.
I've also found that when I use one of the crappy thin microterry inserts that came for free in my fuzzi bunz we have leakage problems. I bet you could salvage your leaking bumwear's by doubling up on inserts, or using thick ones like the www.mtdiaperstore.com wonderfulls or the hemp wonderfulls, or any www.cottonbabies.com inserts. Yes hemp is more absorbent than micro terry.
