Eco-dictionary!

How about a sort of a thread that builds on and creates a lexicon of eco-terms. Hopefully this will increase our understanding of temrs from different perspectives, as we relay our impressions of a word. The word could have 'eco' in it, or 'green', 'wilderness', 'nature', etcetera. Feel free to respond with your understanding of the word and add your own. I'll start:

Greenwash:
Propaganda or advertising from political or commercial sources that depict goods and/or services to be environmentally friendly when in fact they are not, and possibly dangerous.

Ha, ha....i like that one. Very appropriate, and theres a lot of it about! The biggest one being nuclear energy! We had one documentary shown on tv last year that packaged Chernobyl as a positive health boost! Unbelievable, but people were believing it.

Nuclear energy has had a bad rap from the very beginning because it was introduced as the atom bomb. Advertisers learned from this by suppressing the downsides of products they were releasing. Before any product is introduced, a panel looks at the pros and cons of releasing it to the public, but now we only hear the pros. (For example, panelists thought cell phones would encourage bad manners because people would answer them anywhere!) Jerry Mander, a former ad executive himself, wrote "Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television" in which he argued that TVs were inherently flawed because anything presented on them we are pre-disposed to believe, no matter how preposterous.

      Eco-Tourism:

Any business, often in the hospitality or transport sectors, that profits from locating or touring areas that are endangered, or otherwse 'pristine'. This can be a grey area sometimes. For example, a sailboat charters itself so people can see remote areas of the Inside Passage, and some of the proceeds go to local native chiefs who allow their passage so they can afford to do some cleanup after them. On the upside, passengers see first-hand what is being done to pristine areas, such as clearcutting or sport hunting and fishing where it's illegal, and they become moved to start donating to causes to preserve the land. Whale watching is not so grey, in which zodiac outboards buzz hapless whales so that tourist can get a close look.

There is an eco-tourism tribe recently started, but it's idea is to get people involved in hands on voluntary conservation work. So instead of just observing or soaking in the sun, sea , whatever, you are doing voluntary work for local conservation projects. I think it's a great idea, and a great way to see a place and feel that you are both making some contribution to it and also learning about the particular eco-system in that place.

Sorry, it's actually called voluntourism. Just that i think of it as eco-tourism.

              AL GORE EFFECT, THE

According to urbandictionary.com, this is "the phenomenon that leads to unseasonably cold temperatures, driving rain, hail, or snow whenever Al Gore visits an area to discuss global warming." It was spotted in New York City in 2004 and again in Australia last November, when his arrival there on his "Inconvenient Truth" tour was marked by an unexpected late-winter snowstorm.

greenneck - a supporter and advocaant of eco-centered ideas and values on all levels of being. The word is a play off the word "redneck" which some theories suggest came from the red bandanas worn by labour union workers in the 1930s. Be a GreenNeck and wear a green bandana, scarf, tie or something for solidarity against the GreenScare and an eco-centered world view.

Ecopsychology- looking at a person's psychology as linked to the health of the collective world psyche, and looking at the individual as part of a larger whole. Also the psychology behind environmental behaviors.

    Eco-illiterate:
A state of complete unfamiliarity with the natural world, it's inhabitants, characteristics, processes, cycles, blessings, dangers. This could also refer to a lack of knowledge of how humans relate and are connected to the natural world.

I think we could use this word to describe many people in the world today, unfortunately.

I think your word "greenwash" could also describe the false words of an individual or entity (a group of individuals or a corporation) about what they are doing to decrease their energy use, make their actions more sustainable etc etc when really they are just saying those things to make themselves look better and/or to help business.

Exactly, Brandy....and eco-illiterates are frighteningly common. I remember one young father whose toddler asked him how the tomatoes grew on the supermarket shelf, and he knew it was time to take him for a tour of a farm.
