Here is an inexpensive and easy promo item - Mini Note Book

These make great promo items because it's something people will use and most likely will toss in a purse rather than toss into a drawer or worse, the garbage. Give em something they will use and keep!

You will need:
Card stock paper.
Regular plain paper like copy paper.
Paper cutter and stapler.

I'm assuming that everyone has a drawing or photo program for this. :) I'm working with the page layout set in the portrait direction and I've got handy rulers on my program.

1. Draw 3 lines going across the page. These will be your cut lines. I choose a very pale color for these lines so they don't show up on the final product but I can still see them to cut. Of course once you are done with designing the whole page, you can delete these lines and use the ruler on a paper cutter, but leave them if you are using scissors.

2. Space the 3 lines 2 3/4" apart, going down the page.

3. Draw 1 line from the center mark at the 4 1/4" mark. This will be the fold line and will help you design just on the cover side.

4. Design the cover... make it fun! Don't have it be just an advertisement or look like a business card... dress it up. Toss on a few skulls, add a back ground or decorative boarder or maybe a good quote. But yes, be sure to include the URL to your shop or website!

5. Copy your design and paste it in all 4 sections on the right hand side only. PC users: I think your lingo is cut and paste or cut and insert. Check that your design is centered within the lines you drew.

6. At this point, you can remove all the lines and print on the card stock paper. I like to use a color card stock such as antique white.

7. Chop em all up. So, you get 4 covers with backing from 1 sheet. Cut up 2 plain paper sheets per cover, this will give each book 16 pages which is about all a stapler can get through.

8. Fold em all. Place the plain pages inside the cover/backing, close and staple as close to the edge as possible. A long time ago, I found some groovy colored staples. I'll try to find a link for them. And that's it.

2008 is the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Sign!

Back in the 1960's and 70's, the Peace Symbol was an important emblem of the anti-war and counter-culture movements.

But before that, it was used by a different group. Originally it was designed and used as Britain's logo for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), in protest of atomic weapons research. If you look closely at the Peace Symbol, you can see the stylized letters "CND" that create the design.

Another secret meaning is also embedded in this motif:
Gerald Holtom (who was a conscientious objector in addition to being the Peace Symbol's designer) said, "I was in despair. Deep despair. I drew myself: the representative of an individual in despair, with hands palm outstretched outwards and downwards in the manner of Goya’s peasant before the firing squad. I formalised the drawing into a line and put a circle round it."

* The Peace Symbol has intentionally never been copyrighted.

* No one has to get permission or pay a fee to use it. A symbol of freedom, it's free to everyone.

What is Your New Years Resolution?

I've already broken one resolution, to go to bed at a "normal" time. Damn it.

Things I'd like to work on this year:
1. Get back to a normal sleep schedule.
2. Learn new skills to deal with disappointment.
3. Learn new skills besides anger to protect my feelings.
4. Learn how to express what I want.
5. Figure out what I want (LOL).
6. I'd somehow like to be more carefree and not so serious all the time.
7. Learn how to NOT take things so personally... oooh tough one.
8. Gain some weight and get my ass back.
9. Return to my gardening which I set aside for my business.
10. If I return to my garden then I'll be getting the exercise I need.
11. I'd like to laugh this year and smile again.
12. Hopefully become friends with my husband (which I thought we were).
13. Learn to calm my intense emotions and stop the damn crying.

IMPORTANT: If you ever rescue a bird, never try to give it water, you can easily get it into their lungs and drown them. Go to a pet store and buy food, follow the mixing instructions.

6/12/07 On the way home, I asked Jimi to swing into the liquor store for some water. Got out of the car and on the ground was a baby birdie, at first I thought it was on it's way "out" but then Jimi came along and the birdie started squakin. So, we took birdie down the street to the vet's office which turned us away and told us to go to the pet store. Birdie was sitting up with its mouth open for food. The pet store gave us baby birdie food, I mixed some up with the water I had using a key and the lid to the bottle and used the key to feed birdie. So, on our way home, birdie starts squakin again and I started squakin back... and he replied!! So, birdie and I talked about how he was coming to live with us and he said ok. In my studio now, I have the 3 kittens and 1 baby bird... oh, and the birdie is a pigeon which the pet store guy said "OH", as in good grief. Guess we didn't rescue a good enough bird. Anyway, he's as cute as can be. I can't believe he's alive after the fall he took... only time will tell now cause one thing is for sure; he's got a full belly.

At home, I have a lot of pet tanks from when I had lots of lizards. I put birdie in one of the tanks but he kept falling over. Well DUH, he needs a nest. A bowl and a towel worked and I can tell he is happy. I read that they strengthen their legs by bracing themselves against the nest walls.

I was going to name him “Bungie” but then my friend Jane came up with F.R.E.D.

6/13 I noticed a lump on Fred’s neck, it goes down after he rests for a while and then when he chirps it puffs back up. I thought it was an infection at first, don't know what it is now.

6/14 Ok, the sack fills up with food! Weird. This is fun, I’m his mommy. Fred does the cutest things, before each bite of food, he chirps! Then once he starts chewing, he stomps his feet!!

6/23 Fred flew around my room

6/24 Fred gave me ringworm

6/28 Fred grew up so very fast, amazing that in 4 days he had all his feathers out. He’s beautiful… a small bird, maybe a finch. Teaching Fred to eat worms and seeds was interesting. Took him 2 days of staring at the seed branch to figure it out. It also took two days to get him to eat worms on his own.

Well, one day I had only about 5 little worms and there was no more baby bird food for him, Jimi would bring some home after work. What a noisy day I had… Fred squaked in protest. I went to the kitchen and we had some honey wheat berry bread so I tried that. Well, Fred didn’t like it and he spit it out! I looked for oatmeal but we didn’t have any, then I saw corn flakes. Fred spit them out. I had fish food so I tried that. Fred spit it out. I took the corn flakes and soaked them in water, made a mush like his bird food. He spit most of it out. The UPS man showed up with the package of gourmet almonds I ordered and as I was enjoying them it dawned on me to try giving Fred some almonds. So, I chewed up a bunch and I spit them out!! Sure enough, Fred loved it. Finally, Jimi came home with worms and seeds.

I’ve been opening the lid to the enclosure that Fred is in. What a smart bird. He jumps up to the stick I put in there and then hops out onto the lid. Then he will jump back down to the stick and into his house. He does this all day. He’s flown around a few times but it looks like something is wrong with one of his wings. Most likely from when he fell as a baby. He has a hard time flying up. If he doesn’t improve, we may just have to keep him. I’m not one that likes to keep wild animals locked up, I rescue and release but in this case, I may not have a choice. Our other option is to bring Fred to my Father’s house and let him live in the front yard. My Dad doesn’t have any cats and Jimi works there so would be able to feed Fred as needed. We thought we could make him a bird-house.

I had a lot of fun with Fred yesterday. I was taking photo’s of my jewelry and put Fred in the photo with me. He sat on my hand, nice and still. What a bird!!

Cats are really strange creatures

We took in a stray from my cousin, and the cat like to lie in the sink with the water dripping on it. I thought cats didn't like water? I find this behavior unusual.

She is a smart cat, the minute my children are in bed, she comes out to play.

Her favorite perch is on the chair next to the fish tank.

With the recent rains, I hear this beautiful chirp like sound outdoors. I am pretty sure it is the toads in the yard. We have tons of them here. Last year we caught 20 of them in a few hours. My children had them in a container for a bit and they make the cutest noise. That is how I am sure it is them.

I have 8.5 acres of land, feel like catching more toads, Ahna? lol

NEW YORK, March 21, 2007—The ASPCA was recently informed of a voluntary nationwide recall of certain dog and cat foods manufactured by Menu Foods, Inc. This recall affects more than 40 brands of pet food distributed in the U. S. and Canada, including specific wet pet food varieties. Brands affected include Iams, Eukanuba, Purina and Science Diet, as well as store brands distributed by major retailers including Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway, such as Ol’Roy, Special Kitty, and so on. For a complete list of affected brands, please visit http://www.menufoods.com/recall.

There have been a small number of reports of adverse effects on kidney function associated with the consumption of these pet food products. Extensive testing is underway to determine the exact cause. The First Parade

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for thousands of years.

On St. Patrick's Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast—on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place not in Ireland, but in the United States. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City on March 17, 1762. Along with their music, the parade helped the soldiers to reconnect with their Irish roots, as well as fellow Irishmen serving in the English army.

Over the next thirty-five years, Irish patriotism among American immigrants flourished, prompting the rise of so-called "Irish Aid" societies, like the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each group would hold annual parades featuring bagpipes (which actually first became popular in the Scottish and British armies) and drums.

JUST started doing some reading and research and realized that this concept can get really deep and metaphysical. Does anyone use any part of the spectrum of "positive thinking" in a conscious and useful way? Any recommedations for books or websites? I've got "Excuse Me Your Life is Waiting" by Lynn Grabhorn on its way to me now. Does anyone have any good anecdotes to tell about results?

Chinese Herbs!!!!

A long time ago I tried some Chinese herbs for my digestive problem and they seemed to help. In the past 3 months my digestive problem is back so I tried to locate the guy I got the herbs from on the internet. I didn't find him but I found a clinic in Seattle, Wa. So, I tried them out. I had to fill out a 5 page form which took me about 2 hours!! They wanted to know every thing wrong with me. Western medicine has me diagnosed with the following: IBS and Ulcerative Colitis, ADD, Fibromyalgia with Chronic Fatigue, Major Depression, PMS, Agoraphobia and Panic Disorder and throw on a bad case of Herpes that won't let up. Um, that's to much for one person to be ill with. I'm on a coctail of meds. for all these illnesses except the digestion problems but we all know that meds just cover up the problem, they do not cure the problem. Ok, so I filled out that long form and that night the doctor called me. We spoke for over an hour and not to scare me but he did say that I'm about as ill as it gets and trust me, that's how I've been feeling these past months.

The herbs arrived a few days ago, two bags filled with God knows what... bark and twigs and berries and mushrooms, seeds and stuff you would find under a damp log in the forest! I was a little nervous about all this weird stuff but hey, this guy has 35 years of experience... so I cooked them up. Oh the smell... yuck, smelled like stuff you would find under a log in a forest or swept off the floor of a pond! LOL!! I would be in for a real treat when it came time to drinking this shit. Nasty, nasty, nasty and bitter tasting. And there are 2 formulas, 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon with another tea at night.

I'd say after 5 minutes, I started to feel "floaty", in a good way. I was surprised it didn't upset my stomach but my stomach felt fine. The second day I had normal digestion function (if ya know what I mean) and that right there is a huge improvement. The doc called me again today to check on me. What doctor does that!?! He said I'm a serious case and he wants reports every step of the way. So far, he is pleased with the results and noticed I had a lot more energy. Yes, it's true, I do have more energy. The other change is that I'm creating again; I've actually made 2 necklaces in 2 days and got them listed.

So, today is only day 3 but I'll let you all know how I'm doing at the end of the week. :)

Today is my birthday and I can't believe how much time has passed. You know when you were a kid, you couldn't wait to get older? Now that you are older, you can't believe how old you are! Does that sound familiar or am I just in denial?

I have 2 distinct birthday memories - one was when I turned 18 - I was a sophomore in college, walking in campus, on a bright sunny day, feeling good and oh so arrogant - "Man, I'm 18 finally!" The flip side is one birthday when my whole family friggin' forgot my birthday till it was almost bedtime - Yah! Molly Ringwald syndrome!

I'm really sad right now

I just got back from the hospital-my daddy died tonight. He fell and broke his hip last night and went into surgery this evening. Made it all the way through; they were stitching him up when he passed. I know that he's better now and in no more pain. But I just feel as if I cannot go on.I know that I have to be strong for my mom and everyone else-but I just don't want to. I was really a daddy's girl growing up. And when we moved back to florida he was so happy to have me here. I'm sure that he knew he was going because of the way he talked to me and my sister this evening.-asking if we thought that he did alright with us and such.
Dad learn to make jewelry from me about 15 years ago. He really had a love affair with turquoise and worked almost exclusively with it. Sometimes he liked to combine it with coral or hematite. Very chunky bold necklaces.
Any way I'm thanks for letting me get this off of my chest.-Betty

I've seen news shows like Dateline, 20/20 and 60 Minutes do stories on this:

Visible and invisible rodent urine & droppings can make people very ill or even lead to death! Please be extremely careful to always rinse off the tops of any canned sodas or foods. Almost everything you buy in a supermarket was stored in a warehouse at one time or another, and stores themselves often have rodents.

I always try to be careful about this, but like everything else, one gets a little lax.

NO MORE!!

Guess what I found all over the top a sixpack of Coke when I unpacked my groceries yesterday? It doesn't take a lab test to recognize mouse droppings! And there was some sort of a dried up liquid residue in the little crevices of the can top . . .

Oh I'm steamed!

Earlier I was at my Google AdWords account checking on site stats like I always do, but today the site looked different. Yup, 2 of my ad's were gone.... just vanished. I wrote Google an e-mail.

Then, I was in my e-mail, clicked on my inbox where I had saved about 20 e-mails and yup, they were all gone. I sat on hold for a tech and hung up after 10 minutes.

Since Murphy's law is 3... the other day I couldn't find my wallet. I looked high and low! Finally it dawned on us... yup, the dog took it outside and chewed the whole thing up. Somehow I was able to recover the contents although my social security card was soaking wet. At least no money got torn up.

Ok, so nothing else goes missing for me.

I still giggle at that one, but repeating it to my 81 year old mother just the other day, I got to thinking:

This jewelry designer can't really remember a time when I wasn't all about the bling.

When going through the photo albums of when I was just a kid, the thing that really stands out is jewelry - my jewelry! Macaroni necklaces, strung popcorn, a weird raisin & cranberry holiday design and my very favorite - tiny Kleenex flowers (remember making those?) that somehow evolved into a choker. What a blast from the past . . .

As a 12 year old, I loved to go through my mom's costume jewelry. And how much fun was it to watch her get ready for a night out? That final stage of adding the extra special touch - jewelry, was the very best part!

When a teenager, I experimented with the pieces she no longer used, taking jewelry apart to create something new and better. I called it "design and refine", and I have to admit that there were times I didn't confine the creative process to only the things she'd cast off. It didn't take long for her to come looking for Jill every time she couldn't find her newer jewelry. But she soon got over her annoyance, as she'd be the hit of the bridge club or PTA with my one-of-a-kind creations! I kept hoping to see an increase in my allowance, but no such luck.

Nobody was surprised when I got a degree in business with a major in retailing - my very first position was as an Assistant Buyer in fashion jewelry at a prestigious department store. And later I was promoted to Buyer.

Time marched on. Marriage and a beautiful son took over my life for over a decade and a half. I was very content. But after making an out-of-state move, I decided to reconnect with my past and start my own business. Now it's such a pleasure to choose exactly the materials I want to use, without being confined to recycling my mom's beads. But I wouldn't change those initial seeds of inspiration for anything!

The custom jewelry I create now is designed with one thing in mind . . . use only the finest components available to create a long-lasting piece of jewelry others will love to wear! Each piece is carefully handcrafted to feel and look innovative, substantial and timeless - because I want my customers to be as proud to own it as I am to create it!

How would I describe my niche? Thinking back to the macaroni and Kleenex, I'd have to say,

What do you do to recharge your creative energies?

We lead such hectic double, triple, quadruple lives in this day and age, I for one always need to step back and recharge myself before going insane. In my "younger" (meaning reckless) days, it was climbing mountains. These days, one of the things I like to do is play golf with my family or by myself. That and lots of private time with NOTHING scheduled for the day recharges me.

One legend tells the story of Cupid and the mortal maiden, Psyche. Venus was jealous of the beauty of Psyche, and ordered Cupid to punish the mortal. But instead, Cupid fell deeply in love with her. He took her as his wife, but as a mortal she was forbidden to look at him. Psyche was happy until her sisters convinced her to look at Cupid. Cupid punished her by departing. Their lovely castle and gardens vanished with him and Psyche found herself alone in an open field

As she wandered to find her love, she came upon the temple of Venus. Wishing to destroy her, the goddess of love gave Psyche a series of tasks, each harder and dangerous than the last. For her last task Psyche was given a little box and told to take it to the underworld. She was told to get some of the beauty of Proserpine, the wife of Pluto, and put it in the box.

During her trip she was given tips on avoiding the dangers of the realm of the dead. And also warned not to open the box. Temptation would overcome Psyche and she opened the box. But instead of finding beauty, she found deadly slumber

Cupid found her lifeless on the ground. He gathered the sleep from her body and put it back in the box. Cupid forgave her, as did Venus. The gods, moved by Psyche's love for Cupid made her a goddess.

I still like the empire waisted shirts as that style is flattering on me.

You Know You've Been Designing Jewelry Too Long If . . .

In January, a gardening friend mentions that she needs to order seeds... so you give her the address for Fire Mountain Gems.

You discover you don't even have to look at your beads anymore. You can string them by feel. This means you can now bead in the dark.

You can thread the needle in the dark, too.

When you're down, you go to jewelry stores to laugh at their prices.

You have to remember not to be surprised when someone says that doing the peyote stitch is difficult.

You can't remember the last time you knotted your thread before beginning to weave.

You can accurately calculate the expected lifespan of mass-produced jewelry by looking at the width of the gaps in the jump rings and counting the loose threads.

If someone tells you something is 4 mm, 6 mm or 8 mm wide, you know exactly how big that is without looking at a ruler.

You have more tools - including power tools, torches, sanders, drills, tumblers and other assorted gadgets - than your last boyfriend had. And you use them all on a regular basis.

When computer and electronics geeks talk about wire gauges, you know exactly what they mean.

Not only do you shop for supplies at the craft store... you also get them at the hardware store, the sporting goods store, the aquarium shop and the medical supply store.

You can name every bead store, craft store, fabric shop, sewing outlet and embroidery emporium within a twenty mile radius...and you know which items they carry.

You know where all the craft stores are in each town or city where your friends and relatives live.

If there are beads somewhere in a store, even if it's not a bead or craft store, and even if they are not prominently displayed, you will somehow find them.

When you're in the bead aisle at Michael's, newbies who don't even know you flock to you with questions, like iron filings to a magnet.

On more than one occasion, you've held informal classes in the bead aisle at A. C. Moore.

You know there's more than one place in each craft store where beads are displayed... and you've shown store employees where the other places are!

You stop buying beading magazines because the projects are too easy.

Brick buildings remind you of peyote stitch.

You have the amazing ability to find the tiniest objects in any shade or depth of carpet.

You feel it's unethical to let your friends buy or wear bad jewelry.

You see a complicated beadwoven necklace pattern on Tuesday, and think, "No problem. I can wear that this weekend..." And you do.

This really annoys your best friend, because you don't start working on it until Thursday night.

You know a Toho from an Ornela without looking at the package.

You don't buy jewelry to match your clothes. You buy clothes to match your jewelry.

The bowls in your kitchen cupboard are used more often for beads than for cereal.

You find at least one bead in an unexpected place at least once a week.

When your best friend asks if you want to see the Stones, you're excited, because you think she means the rock and gem shows in Tucson.

When someone asks you to get them a cab, you call Ahna! ;<))

You give your children, pets and plants jewelry names. Charlotte. Margaret. Jules. Crystal. Iris.

Instead of saying something is purple, you say it's amethyst, plum, lilac, lavender, or aubergine.

Reiki - Japanese Healing Art

Well, I did it... I have passed my two courses and I'm officially a Reiki Master. Whooo hooo. There is still much to study but I'm feeling confident about my skills. For those that don't know what Reiki is, the simplest explantion is that it is a method of healing through a type of meditation and hand placement on the body. Yet Reiki can also be performed long distance by tapping into the Universal life force and sending it to another person. I have also studied Prana energy which deals more with Chakra cleansing and purification. This too can be done long distance. Facinating and fun. :)

What inspires you to create jewelry. What colors do you most like to work with?

I think the hardest part for me was waking up to my artistic side. Growing up, art was something that was discouraged since it did not have a future. When my kids were born, they were looking at the world through new eyes. Things I would have never noticed before were pointed out. It was at this point I started making jewelry. I noticed that I was able to relax and tune out my daily stresses. I could make myself do things I didn't like by promising I could bead after I was done. I beaded with my twins and turned off the TV. As I got further into jewelry making and color theory something clicked. Now, everything around me inspires me. I think most of my inspiration comes from nature. I am drawn to dark, cool tones. My favorite colors are burgandy, blue, and tans.

Golden Needles . . .

Want em - Need em - Gotta have em!

Going to a bead show down here in Atlanta today. It's certainly not Tuscan, but it's all I've got. Anyhoo, for a couple of years I've been in search of this elusive gemstone. Have even had some pals that attend the Tuscon shows keeping an eye open for me. But nuthin!

I have (repeat, HAVE) to find some clear crystal quartz with golden rutile. I saw a bracelet in St. Louis a couple of years ago in a shop that has great beads and is also a local haunt for Rock Hounds - you know the guys that collect all sorts of interesting / unusual rock specimens. Before they're made into beads . . . The quartz was gloriously clear and in the form of an asymetric graceful nugget. A stunning assortment of golden needles were included within each stone. Big, thick ones and delicate slender ones as well. All fabulous in their shimmering, golden glory! A store employee had designed the bracelet with the very last strand of my elusive heart's desire, and alas - none left for me.

And ever since I've been on a sort of manic, hard-target search for the elusive golden needles!

Is my story a little over the top? Is it a little tongue in cheek? Of course! But it's beads and it's Blog!

It is believed that crystals and stones possess powerful healing energy. This belief is called metaphysics; a philosophy that deals with the first principle of things, including abstract concepts such as being, knowing, substance, cause, identity, time and space (abstract theory or talk with no basis in reality). Yet crystals have been used since the beginning of civilization, even being referred to in the Bible.

We are drawn to crystals and stones not only for their energy but for their magnificent beauty. Several books have been written on the subject so I won't attempt to list them all but rather list some of my favorite and most popular, along with their uses.

Crystal Uses

- Feng Shui is a Chinese healing art form that uses crystals to direct the flow of energy (or chi) within your home. By hanging crystal spheres in certain areas, you can slow or scatter the energy flow.

- Different crystals and stones are also used to heal the body by placing them on chakras. Each chakra has a corresponding color and therefore the color of the stone should coincide with the chakra color. Stress can clog your chakras, slow or stall energy flow, which in turn causes disease in the body.

- Tonics or elixirs are also made using specific crystals and stones to heal the body. These "mineral waters" contain the essence of the energy of the crystalline form from which the water is then fortified.

- For centuries people have adorned themselves by wearing crystals and stones. By wearing or keeping crystals in your environment, you can charge your aura (the energy field that surrounds you). Crystals are used to balance, cleanse, stabilize as well as for scanning and correcting any problems within your aura.

Specific Stones and Their Meaning

As I looked up my favorite stones, I noticed a pattern, many dealing with either the crown, heart or root chakra, (maybe I need to pay some attention). I'll randomly pick some other well known stones.

Agate
Grounds emotions, intellect and physical being. Place over the heart to heal emotional disease that prevents acceptance of love. Place over abdomen to stimulate digestion.

Awakening and Cleansing Your Crystals

Since ancient civilization, tribal ceremonies involved the activation of crystals. If you lived by the sea, crystals were cleansed in the water. If not, they were awakened by placing them in the Sun or Moon light for several hours. Still today, we can use these methods to ÒrechargeÓ our stones.

- Leave them out doors during a new Moon.
- Soak in sea salt for about 6 hours.
- Some even bury their crystals in the Earth during a new Moon.

My fascination with crystals and stones began many years ago when I began my research into alternative healing for some of my own ailments. Today, because of my fascination, I am surrounded by stones in my home... every room has at least one stone. In the past year I have learned silversmithing and lapidary work to further my love and involvement with stones. I'm going to write a book...

I'm really excited about this project. :)

Here's a snipit:

I hadn’t seen my brother in a few weeks, well, since he got his new apartment in down town Soquel, so I went for a visit. What a great night we had! We didn’t talk about the parents at all, we could only listen to music, sing and I danced about. Derrik would of been dancing too but he had injured his big toe in a car door. But that didn’t stop him from asking me to massage his feet! After, I got ready to go to a local club that I frequented. I remember sitting at his table putting on my makeup, the window was open and a warm breeze came in... looking out I could see the little town of Soquel and some people were gathering at the club I was going to. Derrik laid on his bed relaxing and singing. It’s just one of those moments in time that is embedded in my brain, when everything is good.

A few weeks later, I got a call from Derrik, he was just checking in with me but I was on my way out the door to go to the dance club again so I hurried the conversation along, not knowing.

Jewelry is one of our favorite and most personal accessories. But did you know that chemicals found in everyday substances like hair spray, lotions, perfumes and other osmetics can permanently damage the luster of pearls and the shiny finish of silver and gold? Exposure to chemicals, even household cleaners and chlorinated swimming pools, can damage and discolor precious metals and may harm some colored gems. The sulfides in air pollution will cause silver to darken, and the more humid the climate, the faster sterling will tarnish. Knowing how to care for your jewelry can make all the difference in keeping it beautiful for generations to come.

The most difficult is cleaning jewelry that includes gemstones within the piece. If your sterling silver jewelry begins to show signs of tarnish, simply wipe it clean with a silver cloth. Most cloths come in two parts: a cleaning cloth and a polishing cloth. A chemically treated cloth, makes the job a lot easier and faster. The Sunshine Cloth is one of the best known and is great for sterling silver and won't harm gemstones. I would avoid silver dips because some may take the color and polish off many gemstones. Special cloths are also available for cleaning gold.

Some stones are notoriously delicate:Amber
Coral
Drusy
Emeralds
Foil-backed glass stones
Malachite
Mother of pearl
Opals
Pearls
Peridot
Unstabilized turquoise

These delicate gems need VERY gentle cleaning. They should not be exposed to silver dips, ammonia, hot solutions, ultrasonic cleaning or any abrasives. Due to their organic nature, these gems are both soft and porous. Be careful about chemicals in hair spray, cosmetics or perfume. They can damage pearls in particular. Opals also require special care. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner or ammonia, and avoid heat and strong light. Opaque gemstones like lapis lazuli, turquoise and malachite require special care because they are rocks, not crystals. They should just be gently wiped clean with a moist cloth. These gemstones can be porous and may absorb chemicals, even soap, which may build up inside the stone and discolor it. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner, ammonia or any chemical solution.

Liquid silver jewelry is very difficult to clean. You can use a soft cotton cloth or a Sunshine Cloth. Avoid dips. They leave residue deposits between each bead and make the necklace stiff. A good alternative is to take dry baking soda (or baking powder) and rub it on the liquid silver beads. Then pat and brush off the dry powder.

Now that your beautiful jewelry is clean, the question is how to keep it from tarnishing and becoming dull again? Put your jewelry on after applying makeup,lotions, perfume and hair products. In a perfect world, after wearing your silver jewelry, take a few seconds to wipe it off with a soft clean cloth. But that's in a perfect world . . .

I recommend keeping jewelry tightly sealed in ziplock jewelry bags with no-tarnish strips (available from most jewelry suppliers) inside with the jewelry. Change the strips every 3 to 6 months, depending on where you live and how fast jewelry tends to tarnish. Common blackboard chalk will also help prevent tarnish, as well as activated charcoal. Pacific silvercloth is embedded with thousands of particles of silver. These silver particles absorb tarnish-producing gases, keeping your sterling silver clean and shining between uses.

Proper jewelry storage is often overlooked. Jewelry should never be tossed into a drawer or thrown on top of a dresser - that's just asking for scratches and cracked gemstones. Almost every gemstone is much harder than the metal it is set in. Gems can scratch the finish on your silver and gold, and the harder stones can scratch the softer ones. By storing each piece of gemstone jewelry separately in an airtight baggy, you can prevent scratches and wear, as well as tarnish.

Cubic Zirconia has a long history, dating back to the early 1900's but it wasn't until the 1970's, that Soviet scientists learned how to grow the crystals in the laboratory. In the 1980's Swarovski & Co. (a world renowned Australian producer of leaded crystal) began producing cubic zirconia. In recent years it has grown in popularity not just because of a lower price than diamonds but because it is now equal in sparkle and clarity as a diamond.

The hardness of Cubic Zirconia is 8.5 on the Moh's scale has a beautiful shine and is loupe clean. Cubic Zirconia is a cubic form of zirconium oxide. The overall effect is so similar to a diamond that it can even fool a trained gemologist on occasion, it can match or surpass the beauty and brilliance of many diamonds and now comes in a rainbow of colors.

Cubic zirconia can be cleaned with any conventional jewelry cleaner or detergent. With such a high hardness and durability, you can use a brush to clean off dirt or oil also. Ultra sonic jewelry cleaners may also be used on CZ and will not damage the stone.

Lab Created Gems - Synthetic Gemstones

Lab created gems or synthetic gemstones are gems that have a natural chemical structure. Lab created rubies and sapphires are made from corundum. The flux method is used. Lab created gems are loupe clean and very well cut.

Precious Metal Clay (PMC) and Art Clay artists use cubic zirconia and lab created gems because they can withstand the heat from a kiln.

So, you think you'd like to make your own cabochons? Well, I'm going to tell you what's involved in doing that! This doesn't include faceting gems, that's a completely different subject!

One of the first things you learn in a metalsmithing class is how to bezel-set a cabochon. Because of that assignment, I went searching for some interesting stones to set. That's when I fell in love with rocks! I have over 10 years experience in stained glass work, and the concepts of cutting, shaping and polishing cabochons is very similar to working with stained glass!

I didn't have anyone to tell me what I needed, so I started doing a lot of research into lapidary equipment. I figured out that, at the very least, I would need a Trim Saw and a Cab Machine. A Trim Saw is used to cut down rock slabs (flat pieces already cut from rough rock) as close as possible to the shape of the cabochon. This is a basic machine that uses a blade, and has a water reservoir, used to cut stone. Nothing fancy is needed, you just want to be sure that the surface area on the machine is about 4-5 inches on each side of the blade.

A Cab Machine is used to shape and polish the cabochon. Here, I made a mistake. I found three different machines with very different prices, from $336 to $1600. I decided to go in the middle, and selected a machine that cost $795. The description said it was all I would need, what it didn't say was that you had to change out pads and wheels every few minutes, and had to take off all the wheels to change the saw blade! That was fine for the first day or so, but I quickly realized this was going to be a nightmare! I returned it; top-of-the-line, here I come! I got a Diamond Pacific Finie with 6 wheels and a totally separate machine for cutting the slabs, and it was well worth the extra money! When it comes to cabbing equipment, I don't recommend cutting corners, you will end up wasting a lot of your time!

So, here's a cost breakdown, with tax and shipping:

Trim Saw $425 (only for cutting slabs, not rough rocks)

Cab Machine $1,600

Additional supplies needed: Templates, apron, safety glasses, dopping supplies, coolant, polish, blades, rock slabs

Now, if you really want to start from the ground up, you need a Slab Saw for cutting rough rock;

Cost: $1,700

Additional supplies: 5 gallons of water-soluble cutting oil, sharpening stone.

Maintenance Costs: If you do your cabbing at a 'hobby' level, you will probably need to buy new wheels and blade for the Slab Saw about once every 12-18 months. The Trim Saw will require more blades, a good blade for a 6 inch Trim Saw is $28, and you should have two different sized blades, depending on what you're cutting. Material like Rhodochrosite is soft and easy to cut, but materials like agate are very hard, and will dull a blade quickly. A sharpening stone will help extend the life of the blades.

A word about cabochons... there are two different types. I refer to the first as a generic cab, in which you cut as many cabochons from a slab as you can. You'll get more cabs, and very little waste, which is more cost-effective. Then, there is a Designer Cabochon, where you select the best pattern or colors on the slab to create a more beautiful cabochon. You create a spectacular piece, but there will be more waste, and a higher cost as a result.

Last but not least is your time. If you are starting with a rough rock, a slab saw will take about 20 minutes to make a pass; the nice thing about this is that they come with an auto-feed system, so while you're cutting a rock in that machine, you can be working on something else. I can usually spent about an hour at the Trim Saw to produce 10-15 cabs, depending on what material I'm trimming. Harder rocks take longer to cut through. The cabbing machine takes the longest, and you don't want to rush in any of these processes. This will need anywhere from 20-50 minutes per cabochon.

In summary, each individual cabochon will take 45 minutes to 1-1/2 hours to make. Your basic cost for equipment will be about $3,725, plus the additional supplies and the raw material/rough stone. You will need to produce 150 cabs and sell them for an average of $25 each to pay for the equipment. By that time you'll need to replace some blades, and you can start recovering your costs for supplies and stone. Sorry. . .it will be awhile before you can start getting paid for your time!

In my inaugural weekly column about jewelry terminology, I'm going to talk about crystals, more specifically Swarovski full-lead crystals, also known as Austrian crystals, as they are considered the premiere manufacturer of leaded crystals worldwide. Many of the terms used will also apply to other crystal brands, so they will have a broader range of application than just one brand or type of crystal.

First of all, Swarovski produces an incredible array of colors; some, but not all, are produced in a regular color and a light color (amethyst and light amethyst, for example). However, the range of colors is broadened considerably when finishes and effects are added. This is one of the first distinctions that many people are unaware of. A finish is applied over a clear or colored crystal, while an effect involves elements added to the crystal during manufacture to create an altered color shift. These are differentiated in the crystal name, if the name begins with the word Crystal, it is usually an effect (Crystal Silver Shade, Crystal Moonlight, and Crystal Vitrail Light are examples). If the crystal has a coating, it is added to the color; Amethyst AB, Emerald AB2X and Jet Dorado are examples. However, there can be some confusion, for instance Crystal AB is a coating, not an effect. And Satin is treated like a coating but is actually a more color-saturated crystal which is created during manufacture of the crystal (like other effects), rather than applying a coating afterward.

Next week I'll cover the different coatings and effects, and provide illustrations for those crystals I happen to have on hand.
