After taking Effexor over the last 10 yrs, I have tapered off Effexor completely, but 13 days later, I'm still experiencing discomfort. It feels like bugs crawling/zapping me.. everywhere! My hair started falling out as soon as I began to taper off the drug. I'm hypersensitive to sounds, have headaches, can't remember things like I used to, and I'm extremely irritable; to the point of being nasty and aggressive. My doctor said that my system should be cleared of the drug, and that she has never had an Effexor patient experience such strange effects. Then she alluded to my age and hormones as the cause for my discomfort, but I didn't have a problem while still on Effexor except for the fatigue. How long is this going to go on? What can I do to ease the creepy skin feeling? Am I loosing my mind or what?

  • What dosage were you at and how quickly or slowly did you taper off?

I was up to 300mgs/day and took 6 months to to get off the stuff. Towards the end, I would skip days of the lowest dose available to me (37.5 mgs), and then skip even more days. I've been off the stuff for a couple of months now, but am wondering what if the withdrawal still affects me.

    • Hi Jen

I am sorry you are having such a hard time. Your experience is quite common. Although each person responds to withdrawal differently.

It does sound as if you may be coming off the effexor to quickly.

      Check This site
      www.comingoff.com/index.php

The site claims that If a symptom is due to withdrawal of a drug, it will typically occur soon after a reduction (or discontinuation) of the drug and disappear within about 2 weeks (and generally not persist beyond 3 weeks).

Withdrawal effects have been reported to occur with both abrupt and more gradual withdrawal but seem to be reduced by a truly gradual withdrawal that lasts at least two to three months.

      Please read the info here

      theeffexoractivist.org/forum/...rum.php

Be sure to read "Sweettooth’s methods for withdrawal" and "If you are Quitting READ THIS!" And see the site above.

Are you taking (EPA) and (DHA) omaga 3s? It seems to help some people.
  • How can doctors be so ignorant. Apparently, she prescribed this drug without bothering to read 50 page drug label which clearly states the symptoms of withdrawal or "discontinuation" as the drug companies like to call it. It's not a matter of the drug clearing the system, it's a matter of recovering from the damage the drug has done to the brain and body. I'm still experiencing discomfort 26 months after taking my last dose. Most the the extreme symptoms have subsided, but I still have the zaps, still have the hypersensitivity to sounds, vivid dreams, and anhedonia.
  • Hey Jen I am at 16 months after being drug free and I still have withdrawal. It is not the all encompassing this it was at the beginning when I cold turkeyed but it is here and sound. Dizziness sweats fatigue all part of the withdrawal show. It seemed to stop for awhile these symptoms anyway and other ones would take their place So dont' expect to be dancin in the sunshine it just doesn't happen after these drugs get into your system they change something forever. That is what I believe. I hope you are doing well but will put money on that your not. Unless of course you went back to the pills then you are dumbed up and feel bad only diffence here is you won't complain as you can't connect with yourself to see how you are doing.
Quite a horrible situation we have in the world today with all these drugs wonder how we will make it out of course not all of us will and they don't give a shit just a number with a dollar sign in front of it.
We have to find a new way that is outside the grasp on big money companies thing is it is almost impossible to escape them as they are everywhere sad.:(
    • Going on 8 months off now,,(April 21),,,
the main thing i feel is the anger, mainly towards later in the day,,fatigue, and still the tears can whelp up out of nowhere...
very discomforting for a man of 47 years (i know, you ladies too)
i've blown up at my wife a few times and that is even harder to swallow than the withdrawal...

everyone is different and that's what i hope for,,,that it will not take as long for me to re-coop as some...
sounds selfish, but I just need relief as I am facing other challenges in my life that even a straight thinking person would
      have trouble juggling.

      this sucks.
good luck everyone....i truely wish you all well.

  • Drug free was just the beginning for me. I am better but still a not even close to as functional as I was before the drugs or while taking them before they stopped working tolerance is what I suspect. You may want to read this ladies blog bipolarblast.wordpress.com/2009...gain/

antidepressant facts creator says it took him 7 years to fully recover. So if you are still within this time frame don't give up hope.
Supposedly most are significantly improved 2 years after quitting.

You can find this article here if you would like to see what he has to say.

I highly recommend his article titiled antidepressantfacts/pineal which can be found at the above site.
    • It is great to hear that the creator of antidepressant facts actually DID fully recover. My greatest hope is that EVERYONE will fully recover.

It is interesting that it took 7 years. Many people believe that most of the cells in our bodies have been replaced with fresh new cells on average after seven years.

      wiki.answers.com/Q/Does_th...ry_7_years

(KL Spalding, RD Bhardwaj, BA Buchholz, H Druid, and J Frisen) determined the age of specific human tissues and cell types and compared those ages to the age of the person in question. Spalding et al found that most cell and tissue types in the human body are much younger than the person in which they are found, and that very few cells live for the entire life of the person.
