Hello everyone,
First of all, let me introduce myself. I'm new on this tribe. I am a beginner dancer and have been taking classes off and on (Depending on the current economical blahs) and have performed like maybe three times. I am mostly ATS trained and that method of dance is what I am familiar with.
I am in love with the folk and traditional aspects of belly dance. I just gave Turkish 9/8 a gander and am looking to learn more of the Egyptian folk dances. I have seen many videos of progressive baladi dancing and I just love it and was wondering if you all could share your favorite musical choices for this style.
Thank you all so much.

Re: Pregressive Baladi
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 6:08 AMa new convert :-)
do you mean like "new" balady music, or "balady progression"? B. progression is where it starts slow & then has faster sections - ?
it used to be that most cd's released for Egyptian nightclub dancing (i.e. by Eg. orchestras) had pieces like this, not sure about newer recordings though, with so much pop out nowadays. Hope someone else can help with that. My fave music is old style, like last century :-) -

Wed, March 25, 2009 - 6:13 AMYes Anthea,
I mean the balady progression music where it starts off nice and slow and ends fast.
I have been to all the music stores around here and sadly, what is mostly available is pop and I'm not so fond of that as I am of the folkloric and older or classy music. -

Re: Pregressive Baladi
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 9:21 AMA song title to look for is "tet baladi" or "ashra baladi". These are generic names for that genre of baladi music. One of the Jalilah Raqs Sharqi CD's has one, but I forget which.

Well, there it is..my grand attempts at beledi progression. I wish I hadn't stepped on that bead in the beginning. It was also a little unnerving having Ansuya and Janeani sitting in the front row. That was who I was clapping with. :) -

Re: Pregressive Baladi
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 5:41 PMOne of my favorite pieces and not too difficult either is the accordian taxsim off of the Princess of Cairo CD. It starts out really slow and goeey then gradually speed up, but never too crazy fast. I love beledi progressions and to me, when I watch a pro dancer I look for how she dances the beledi progression, especially improv with a live band. To me that is the "essence" of belly dancing. -

Thu, August 20, 2009 - 6:56 AMThanks! I really had a blast that night. I ditched the finger cymbals and just focused on the music and dancing. It was one of those rare magical nights. I was soaking wet by the end of the show! Too bad the video was of such poor quality. -

Thu, August 20, 2009 - 6:07 PMThanks. My teacher would be proud. We called her the "shimmy queen". FYI-I had been retired for 2 years before I did that show. I had to practice for about a month to get back into shape without dying!
