Ahlan Wa Sahlan Festival

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if any of you have attended the Ahlan Wa Sahlan festival in Cairo, Egypt? And if so, how much did your whole trip cost (airfare and everything else....how much did the festival cost?)? I am trying to see how much I should save up to attend, and wondering if I could pull it off this year.

Thanks

I've gone 4 times. I always went with Morocco's tour group. (See www.casbahdance.org for the package she is offering for the 2007 festival.) In addition to the package deal she offers, you'd have airfare to/from New York, plus whatever money you want to allocate for buying souvenirs, gifts, costumes, taxi fares, camel rides, etc. You'd also want to budget something for meals. The hotel where the festival has been in the past includes a buffet breakfast with the room fee if you stay at it, but you're on your own for other meals.

In previous years, the festival charged in the neighborhood of $60-70 for the opening night gala dinner show, and a similar amount for the closiong night gala dinner show. You sign up for your classes piecemeal - the 2-hour folkloric classes have been $30 each, and the 3-hour "master instructor" Oriental classes have been $60 each. So your costs will depend on how many classes you take. Of course, I don't know whether the prices will be the same in 2007. They have had 3 class slots per day, with several workshops to choose between each time. The first and last slots were $60 3-hour ones, and the middle slots were $30 2-hour ones. I'm not sure, but I think there's a minimum of $200 total for classes (ie, you must buy at least that many classes) plus a $25-ish registration fee. The reason I'm not sure is that this minimum and this fee were waived for those of us who traveled with Morocco as part of her tour group - a professional consideration that Raqia provided to Morocco.

I am going thru Zahra's trip. but as I dont have that much vacation time (or cash) I am only going for about 9 days as opposed to 15 and flying on my own. she offers the option of doing whats called a "land trip" which is just paying for hotel, group activities , and some workshops and shows etc, and guide to and from airport etc. I'm excited!

anyone ever done any of the other group tours? care to share any details?
                  thanks,

I haven't gone, but I take classes (semi) regularly with Zahra, and I know several people who've gone with her group. They all RAVE about it, and their pictures look like a lot of fun. I think it's better to go with a group like that because you always have friends around to do things with.

              djamila,
when you show up at the festival, you sign up on that day (at the same place where you register for your classes)...you can tell them what song you will dance to and if you will dance to cd or with the live band

              :-)

I'm going this year!! It will be my first time and I am SO excited.
To help me with my experience I started taking Arabic lessons. :) Yasmin (DC) and three other of her students are going.
We booked some hotel stuff through Lucy of Scheherezade Imports (VA) who has a wonderful tour. Our other stuff will be provided by Yasmin's former musicians over there, which will be an amazing treat. I'll be staying in Egypt 15 days; after Cairo a couple of us will be heading to Alexandria.
