Re: baladi
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 9:41 PMwhat type of dancer are you?.. do you connect better to fun and flirty or curving dramatics ?.. that is how you choose - with what you feel more connected to.

Re: baladi
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 3:39 PMwell i would have to say i am known for emotion thats why i rather do that
like sexy/emotional or fun/flirty -

Re: baladi
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 1:51 AMhi Richy, I saw your clips on youtube which I really like. Go for Tahtil Shibbak! -

Re: baladi
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 4:09 PMthanks! :)
just so you know...the tahtil shibbeck i have a video of is not the version i wanna dance with for raqsLA. Ala warg il foul is very similar to that version that i wanna dance to
the tahtil shibbeck that i had in mind is alot softer emotional and sexyy -

Re: baladi
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 2:06 AMok. I actually liked your strong approach which so corresponded to the suspense that is in this song. But I guess if you know your music so well that you can do whatever you like to it, then you own the music and I think you should stick to it. Whatever if your mood is rather fun+flirty that evening, then do the other thing. -
-
Re: baladi
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 8:51 AMI'm sure you can connect beautifully with the music either way. I think it can be dictated by your mood & the piece of music you choose. personally, I generally prefer to *watch* "fun & flirty" . however, I wont be there to see your performance...so, let us know how it goes. -

Re: baladi

Re: baladi
Mon, May 19, 2008 - 6:57 AMNice! Good job! For my taste maybe the feet not sooo wide apart during shimmy but you have your own style and it is real fun to watch and goes so much with the music, I wish I could dance like that! -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: baladi
Mon, May 19, 2008 - 3:01 PMthank you soo much all really....
i would really appreciate if you give me constructive critisism like my strengths and weaknesses and nuria your right about the feet with shimmies but personally i cant execute a proper shimmy with my legs close together, they just wont move lol :) -

Re: baladi
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 7:30 AMok Richy, I'm game! ;-)
First, I love your dancing, it so musical, beledi & strikes a nice balance between masculine strength & feminine softness.... very nice!
My only criticisms would be:
- black costumes! they never show up well on stage (and I think they look nicer if they're longer, like to the ankle)
- you could face other directions a bit more; it was nice when you started that traveling turn in place toward the end; but even to face the diagonal or side sometimes...
- when your hand go up to head level & above, the movements seem a bit fast - it would be nice to slow down the movement there, or pose them overhead for a little bit
How is that? -

Fri, May 23, 2008 - 7:34 AMAnd why should I be critique-ing without getting some in return! Here's some clips of mine, feel free to comment on me too lol youtube.com/user/DanceEternal -

Re: baladi
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 9:09 PMso i watched your raks al assaya and i have this to say
me personally i take tradition very seriously in my dance, meaning when its a certain rythem i like to go to its extent and use the sterio typical movement with the rythm
i didnt see that much and maybe because im a man i felt while doing saidi it should be agreesive?
it was a little to soft for me
when dancing oriental no prob but for saidi and baladi (because the song goes back and for) it needs a little more masculinity and funif you want to see i have also danced to that same song : youtube.com/watch

Re: baladi
Sat, May 24, 2008 - 7:34 PMthank you Richy, that's cute! I think I'm just a 'softie' ;-) & not so energetic as you, huh! -
-
Re: baladi
Sun, May 25, 2008 - 7:40 AMAnthea's style is always lovely and feminine. :)
Richy- I'd also add that while raqs assaya came OUT of tahtib- it IS traditionally different and the women's dance is feminine, flirty and sassy, while retaining the saidi feeling with the heels keeping the beat, some shoulder work, traditional leg moves and steps and of course assaya play. Women can choose to do a more masculline tahtib style cane and actually I've learned some great cane moves from an Egyptian male dancer, but traditionally we don't have to. These Egyptian greats illustrate better what I'm trying to say.

:)
Although Lebanese dancers often have a more energetic and debke feeling in their cane. Rindala shows this with enthusiasm
www.youtube.com/watch
Lara- if you hold the cane between your thumb and the part of your had before the index finger you can have a nice secure grip while the wrist movement (not circling the hand, so much as moving the arm a bit and using a lot of wrist) is propelling the cane.
If you let the cane flip in the hand for a reverse grip you can do the alternating side really fast back spin that Mona Said does. Most assaya spins do not grip with the whole hand. -

Re: baladi
Sun, May 25, 2008 - 1:18 PMsamora, i see what your saying and agree but for me in a folk-y dance like saidu or baladi personally i like more masculinity and bouncy-ness rather than too soft
and for the record the style i do is not tahtib its just raks assaya so dont think i'm impleying tahtib hen i dont even know how to do it :)

Re: baladi
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 8:59 PMAnthea- thank you everything you say i agree with!
with the costume color tho like black but i do see what your saying and about the length, someone gave me the costume so it is a bit small so i havnt had time to get a newer one and about the hands and direstions i was nervous, so things were going out of my head but thank you i appreciate it all!

Re: baladi
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 8:51 AMOverall I thought you did a great job!
very expressive, good transitions, good flow, very fun
This is really nitpicking, but the few things that did get to me- there was a lot of wrist flicking in a couple spots- a little bit I don't mind, but too much can be distracting (of course I notice this because it is one of the things I habitually have to work on too!)
You mentioned having a hard time doing shimmies in a narrow stance- is that for movements in general? the drop at the beginning had a rather wide stance as well that I don't favor.
you have great facial expression (especially during that nice big hip circle) but keep it up through out! (course this could also be a video issue!)
& lastly, the nice big hip circle is a great accent, but I don't like to see the same accent used over & over- a couple/3 times, but I think you could have varied it a bit more.
Again- great job! -
-
Re: baladi
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 9:02 PMwell thank you :)
again with the wrists i totally agree! if you watch my other video's i dont move as fast, it was because i was nervous :)
about my stance well i think ususally with shimmies i am just far apart, well egyptian shimmy other stuff not purposely do i take a wider stance but i will keep that in mind.
about doing the hip circle thing to much ya i agree with variety but tha was my "dina moments" of the danbce so i wanted it in as much as possible :) -
-
Re: baladi
Sat, May 24, 2008 - 8:18 AMthe wider stance is totally understandable, both for shimmies & anything else, since the male hips & pelvis are built differently (can't beat physiology!) but I think it was the straight on wide stance squat that bothered me- maybe it wouldn't in different costuming, or maybe just turning on a bit of an angle?
LOVED the cane dance- one of my favorites ever, honestly- I've never seen floorwork with cane before & I like it! Any tips for working up speed when spinning the cane? I've been practicing forever but I seem to have reached a not very speedy plateau. -
-
Re: baladi
Sat, May 24, 2008 - 10:10 AMohh thank you soo much :)
floorwork i hate usually in sharki or baladi or anything, i find it too turkish for me but in saidi it is needed
with spinning the cane i dont no if i can type a tip to you but its really about a slit yet quick turn of the wrist between the thumb and index
the oher way that s REALLY REALLY REALLY fast is your holding it in your entire hand but you use the with only going backwards
