Re: folkloric dance travel - any advice?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 8:04 AMDear Sandra,
It would depend on if you are trying to learn stage or true folk versions of the dances. You can SOMETMES learn true folk versions by simply being invited to someone's home. You used to be able to go and visit the Banat Maazin, but I am not sure if that is still possible, or if they still perform on any of the tour boats. For stage version, just about any dance show wlil get you some stage folkloric. As for Khaliji, it is best not learned in Egypt. As one of my friends from the Gu;f once told me. "We laugh when we see Egyptians dancing Gulf dance."

Re: folkloric dance travel - any advice?
Fri, August 28, 2009 - 11:03 PMYou might want to contact Sara Farouk or Tracy Gibbs. Sara lives in Egypt, and takes tour groups out to experience folk culture. Tracy lives in the UK, and assists Sara in organizing these. I think the next one will be in March 2010, and will be an excursion to the Bedouin part of southeastern Egypt. -

Re: folkloric dance travel - any advice?
Wed, November 11, 2009 - 12:43 AMI would contact Sahrah Saeeda. In May 2010 she will travel to egypt with a group of students "Journey throuh egypt part 3 and 4". She teaches different folcloric dances as they were danced by the people at home, in public (if it´s possible) and in the national groups.
In the second part they will travel to the dance zones. I wish I had the money to join her group. -

Re: folkloric dance travel - any advice?
Mon, November 16, 2009 - 1:55 PMI did the Sahra Saeeda JtE 3 and 4 and it was incredible. I especially enjoyed our experience in Cairo, where we were well tapped into the culture. I realized that it is REALLY REALLY REALLY important to know someone who lives there, or someone who is close with someone who lives there - your entire experience deepens into the real world of Egyptian culture - if you can go with Sahra, do!
