Hello all,
I hope this post isn't considered spam. But I thought since my style is mainly Egyptian, maybe other Egpytian style lovers could help me :-) So, I'm in the works of having my own instructional dvd series with Cheeky Girls Productions, but I'm having trouble deciding what topics to teach.
So, what I would like to do is ask what topics would you like to see that's geared specifically towards Egyptian style? Here are some of my ideas:
-Modern Egyptian Technique and Combos
-Raks Sharqi Chorgography
-Saidi/Assaya Combos or Choreography
-Melaya Luff
-Drum Solo
-Sha'abi
Tell me what you think? What are your ideas?
Thanks so much,
~Ahava

Re: DVD topics?
Fri, January 2, 2009 - 2:40 PMHi Ahava,
I think Sha'abi would be a great topic. There aren't too many (any?) dvds on this topic available, and although I'm interested I haven't had any lecturing on this (travel for workshops...)
Modern Egyptian Technique is always interesting. there's always something that would be more modern than modern :-))))

Fri, January 2, 2009 - 9:25 PMHi Ahava :)
I think you need to do something special, not the same old same old thing everyone does.
Being that you are an educated Egyptian dancer do something special like Shaabi or Melaya -

Re: DVD topics?
Sat, January 3, 2009 - 8:26 AMI vote for the shaabi also. I don't think I've ever seen a DVD on that topic.
Also, Melaya Leff is a specialized performance piece. Some Shaabi technique and steps would be more versatile.

Sun, January 4, 2009 - 9:09 AMHi Ahava,
I vote for Sha'abi - I love the style. And a good Saidi is always welcome!
Best of luck with the project - can't wait to see what you decide.

Re: DVD topics?
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 9:27 AMAHAVA I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad to hear this.
One point: you might want to see what Ranya Renee s upcomin 3 Egyptian style dvds treat in order to not cut away from your future sales by having ppl spread the word it s pretty similar to what she teachers. Her dvds will be Baladi 2 dvd set, Modern Orientale, Classical Orientale.
I vote for AAALL of the topics you mentioned.
You re a greatly skilled authentic Egyptian style artist - and there could be a looong series treating Egyptian in my opinion.Aside the master teacher workshops (beginner to late beginners are no way ready for - not even intermediates I d guess!).
Priorities:
One general Egyptian style Raks sharki dvd (I d prefer not to have one choreography only, but lots of instruction on how Egyptian style movements (the very internal and subtle ones) are made, how they can be drilled, teach some on the rhythms and melodies with movements going with it etc). maybe that could be a technique raks sharki style, and one choreography.
MELAYA LAFF I d LOOOOVE, and Shaabi also! I think those are priorities after a basics dvd. There is nothing reachable for late beginner/intermediates exept for Ranya s upcoming series, and I have been searching a lot, and know of many ppl who do. The mass market for beginner products has created many bellydance aficionados who know want to learn to dance Soheir Zaki or Samia Gamal style (of course not with that soul and skill - but movement-wise :) )
Saidi combos equally is a niche not so far occupied for the ppl who have the basics, but are by no way pros (Nourhan Sharif s dvds seem to be doable only for pros..)
An Egyptian style drum solo would also be great, but I d opt for it AFTER making theothers.
Best wishes Dina

Re: DVD topics?
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 7:04 AMI really dig Adaweya. I found a clip that has a great song, so fun that's why I would like to know how to dance to it. It is from Yasmina of Cairo's albums. A great song everybody will want to dance to II think is a key to success of a dvd...

Sat, January 10, 2009 - 5:01 PMNuria, I LOVE that song too!!!! I'll ask my friend if she can help translate it for me :-) Would you consider this Sha'abi? -

Re: DVD topics?
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 10:36 PMAhmed Adawia is considered the father of Sha'abi. This is a mix of several songs, Bint Al-Sultan is second, which is one of his most famous songs. If you truely go to the source for the rights you will be paying big bucks. (I wouldn't use his music unless you do so legally). I worked with him in Paris in the early 1980s. To poor Egyptians at the time, he was the equivalent of Elvis... Leila of Cairo does a wonderful workshop on Sha'abi, but I don't think she has put out a DVD on it yet. -

Re: DVD topics?
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 10:43 AMYeah, I've heard of Ahmed Adawia. I have to get the rights in of all of the music I'm going to use, and I kinda figured that it's going to get quite expensive. I actually emailed Yasmina of Cairo and asked her if I could use some of her songs and she's totally cool with it :-) That's why I'd asked if that would be considered a good Sha'abi song :-)
How was it working with Ahmed? -

Re: DVD topics?
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 12:50 PMAs with any music you would have to get the permission of the composers for each piece in the mix (I do not believe Adawia wrote the music to any of his songs) for audiovisual synchronization rights. I do not believe Yasmina negotiated those rights (if any at all, copyright is a murky issue in Egypt). Due dilligence is best, to avoid a law suit.
Adawia was a very sweet guy. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't prepared for the consequences of getting involved with Saudi princesses. -

Re: DVD topics?
Sat, January 17, 2009 - 9:29 AMhmm I do not know any story with Saudi princesses? What happened??
I love some of Ahmed Adawiyas songs especially Bint el Sultan.
Love how Soheir Zaki dances to it! by coicidenc would you know how the dvd with him andher is entitled, and where to get it? thanks :)

Re: DVD topics?
Sun, January 18, 2009 - 3:28 PMOh I'd say it would be Yasmina's liability because it's her band singing and playing and her cd so she can decide whether or not to market her cd through Ahava's dvd! If she hasn't negotiated the rights she'd get in trouble, or is this too much of an amateur understanding of legal stuff?

Sun, January 11, 2009 - 7:29 PMNever mind, just answered my own question regarding if it was sha'abi lol :-)

Re: DVD topics?
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 11:27 AMAs I read in the comments to this piece, the song is called "Tribute to Adaweya" released by Yasmina of Cairo. So maybe it isn't Adaweya himself but a mix of his songs sung by the singer of Yasmina's band (Fe'ret el Negoum)?
I don't know how those things work, but maybe they would be interested selling their cds, which would mean a cd sold with each dvd.
A more modern version would cover the costs of that one song for free I think, though. I'd like to buy a dvd and get the song I need along with it. -

Re: DVD topics?
Wed, January 14, 2009 - 10:53 AMNuria,
You are absolutely right that it is not Adawiyah singing in Yasmina of Cairo's CD. He was the king of Sha'abi, the first and most well known of all shaabi singers and the public face for the founding of an entire musical genre. With just a basic education on shaabi, it's easy to recognize the first strains of his well known melodies (even with a different singer). There are videos of all the great dancers dancing with him- Fifi, Souheir etc.

Wed, January 14, 2009 - 5:20 PMOmigod, just saw this for the first time. Don't have any input that hasn't already been said here, but I just wanna say -- can't wait to see your DVDs! -

Re: DVD topics?
Sun, January 18, 2009 - 7:14 PMYeah, when I emailed her she said she makes her cds especially for dancers. All she as asks is that the cd/song title is mentioned in the credits and also where you could purchase it. And she also asks for a free copy of the finished product :-) What I was thinking was selling the cd on my website and making a deal like you can buy the dvd and cd for "X" amount. What do you ladies think? -

Re: DVD topics?
Wed, February 4, 2009 - 1:18 PMDefintely another vote for Sha'abi - as it's very hard to get hold of DVD material on this. I'd love to see classic sha'abi moves taught, along with some idea on how to put them into your own choreographies, rather than just a straight choreography DVD.
I'm really excited about this!
Good luck with making the DVD Ahava,
Nikki
