I can post you my only own clip of a small performance which is Tamra Henna with zils plus drum solo with zils. You can take basically any drum solo if you are good at zilling to it. Tamra Henna is almost all baladi pattern plus the zar bit will be right-left-right.
This is the only stuff I learned to play with zils for my lessons were limited ;-). I like zils, though.

Here is Sophie doing a bar zil solo, she's very good at zilling though www.youtube.com/watch

that's so sweet! You have a really nice stage persona - Very "Naima Akef"! I was going to show you my version of Tamerhenna, I played cymbals to it too! I thought I'd uploaded it but couldnt' find it - if I get a chance I'll upload it & let you know. It's more American style tho, & a different version of the music.
Thanks for the cymbal solo link too, I'm loving all the cymbal playing nowadays :-) Good to see it coming back -

And of course I really can't bypass any post about zills without showing my friend Aida. Check out the zill solo at at: 2:25. Those young Greek boys sure start out young!

I happen to know Aida, Anthea, and I can tell you she is definitely not a boy. It was my good fortune to see her perform toward the end of her dancing career and not only is she definitely not a boy, she was an unusually first-rate dancer, always a thorough pleasure to watch. She now teaches and has a troupe in the Detroit area. They usually perform at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. I'm going there Monday and am hopeful that she and her group are there this year, too.

No, no, Aida is not a boy. I'm talking about the little Greek boy who gets up to tip her during the zill solo. Around 3:00.

I am so glad that zill playing is making a come back. I think it is an esential component that has been neglected for far too long. It was great to see the dancer play her own rendition of 'Standard Arabic Drum Solo"

Thanks for the link! Of note, there did not appear to be a hair band to assist balancing that sword ;-)

oh, thank you! that was cute! what if a cymbal solo became standard part of a nightclub show like the drum solo did! ;-)

                    Dear Anthea
Esmahan in Egypt did this with a sagat player who was SO amazing. I THINK I saw him play when I was in Cairo last year, at Liza Laziza's house. he is magnificent!! You cans ee this on Ahlan Wa Sahlan, vidoes, but I can't remember which year right now. It may have been 2004 or 5. You could ask Hala.
                    Regards,
                    A'isha

hi A'isha, maybe it will turn up on youtube ;-) but I meant for the dancer to do a cymbal solo! probably not, but fun to think about.

thank you Anthea! I totally adore Naima Akef and plan to do the same routine next time closer to how she did it...
I think also Aziza of Montreal zilled to Tamra Henna, I think she used the Beata and Horacio version. Of course I'd like to see your clip!

Btw. about Sophie's clip I didn't mean to say "bar zil solo" but "bare zil solo". No tabla.

Ha, and now I've seen Spohie's only zill music dance (also very beautiful), I'm going to practise mine again..... Oh boy, that is a long time ago I danced that one for the last time - wondering if I still know the choreo and zill pattern....
I'm starting to get exciting about zills again...

Hi Nila, thank you for your kind comment. I wanted to use my Zildyians on this occasion but they were too heavy for the drum solo.

Haa, I love Zildjians! But there are very loud (and pure!). Better use them outside or in huge places....
They should make a lighter version of them.....

Once you learn the basic rhythms and how to play finger cymbals to them any pre-recorded drum solo with predictable transitions can work. In Artemis' new instructional zill CD she goes over all the main ones, if you need a place that breaks down the doums and teks for zills. She even mentioned Anthea as being one of her all-time favorite zillists!
