Hello! I know that to dance to Oum Khalsoum is the cream and you better do it right. What are the rules though? I understand that you have to dance according to the lyrics.
Here is a dancer I really love. She is a gypsy and has a passionate way about her dancing some people don't want to tolerate because it is definitely not Egyptian (but full of feeling, which Egyptian on the other hand requires). But I wonder about those comments:
"She can dance very well, but unfortunately she doesn't have real understanding for the music of Oum Kalsoum (this song is from Oum Kalsoum). She dances American Cabaret, but if you want to interpret Oum Kalsoum songs, you have to dance Egyptian style. Oum Kalsoum is a legend in the Arab world and you cannot just interpret her songs anyway you want. It has to be the right way and this interpretation, even if the dance look good and aesthetical, is not the right one."

Shashkova does not do "American cabaret". But this isn't the main point.

That would mean, after all, that Oum Khalsoum, although admittedly she is a symbol for Arab culture, does not transcend ethnic boundaries. And in my opinion she does. Of course she does! Ok, you can make an Arab audience feel "expropriated" - but on the other hand they should be proud that their singer has reached much further yet!

So after sitting on pins and needles for almost a year, I have finally been accepted into the American Univeristy in Cairo for a study abroad program this upcoming fall. I will be there for about 4 months. Trying to find out about the dance scene in Cairo is difficult as I don't know where to go online wise (most 'over there' sites are the easiest sites in the world to navigate) So my questions are...

Who should I see?
Where should I go to see them?
Where should I go for costumes? (Eman Zaki, but who else?) I plan on buying 2
Who should I take from?
Are there any events I should be aware of?
Where else would you recommend to travel? I will be traveling to Jordan to visit family, so any dancers there?

I know I will be trying to get in contact with Raqia for sessions, but who else? Does Nagwa Fouad teach outside of Ahlan Wa Sahlan? I feel so disconnected from Egypt, but I'm about to go for a couple of months and I want to take full advantage of this opportunity of a life time. If there isn't something on my post I should know, point it out and give me direction!

Thank you all for your input!

Hi, I heard that to dance a drum solo there are certain rules. If you know them, that is places in the music that call for a certain way of interpretation or else other places where you are free to do what you like (of course it should always match) - then you have the basic guidelines to choreograph and improvise. These rules are supposed to be taught here in a row of workshops. My teacher won't tell us although I share a regular private lesson with a friend because she said that's the workshop stuff (=you're not getting it within the private lessons). Ok that's her deal. So far I have made efforts to study the rhythms on my own and to find out about characteristical moves, studying on youtube, dvd and tribe. I heard of the question-answer-game (which I think is quite audible in the music). But what about rules? Do you know rules for drum solo dancing?

Is this something that came out of ballet? If it is truely an insult, then why are they (Egyptian dancers) doing it ? I just finished watching my video of Fifi Abdu (sp?) again, for example, and there she is with a stop-the-presses straight arm out at a 30 degree angle, and the palm facing out like a salute, and the other hand/palm is facing out while it frames the side of her head, hand slightly behind her ear. Someone please help me clear this up. ;-) (Shrugs in confusion)...

I had a random question about obtaining a license to dance in Cairo. I have no intention or want to dance professionally in Cairo, but I'm curious as to how one obtains a license to do so. Is there a written exam? Just an application? Does the ministry need to see you dance or your costuming? How long does the license last? I've tried to look them up online, but any link is an empty page or doesn't exist.

*Hopefully* I will be going to Egypt this upcoming fall for study abroad, but of course I will be geeking out about dance. I was just curious about this process, but let me state that I will not be looking to obtain a license!

OK....

Here's another piece of trivia which may or may not be important...although, I believe it is extremely important.

About 90 percent of Egyptian dancers -- pre Fifi Abdo, anyway -- are left sided. In fact Fifi herself is left sided. That is not to say that she is left handed, but rather left sided and executes or starts movement more on her left side rather than her right side. We in the USA are right sided and start or execute movement on our right side rather than our left side. In fact, many left handed dancers are taught right sided.

I've observed the following (and many many more not listed):

Fifi Abdo - ties scarf on left hip/ uses left hip, slit on left side; cane in right hand; favors left hip
Nahed Sabry - left hipped
Katie - left shoulder; turns right; favors left hip
Shosho - left handed; left sided
Nebawiya Moustafa - left hipped; ties scarf of left hip
Taheyia Karioka - left hipped; begins most of her moves on left hip; travels left mostly
Zinat Aloui - left sided
Hind Rostom (an actress dancing in movies) - left sided
Zizi Moustafa - left sided

I've observed numerous others including, but not limited to, Hanan, Nelly, Mona El Sayed, Hoda Shams El Din and others. Many of these dancers are left sided as well.

This is another topic I addressed on Med-dance list and was instantly shunned -- a topic having no importance whatsoever in the dance. I think it is very important to observe Egyptian dancers in everything they do and to understand why it is that they do it. My take on it is that Egyptians write from right to left so many may be left sided as a result of ending their sentences on the left. We, in America, write from left to right and so we take many of our steps beginning with our right foot. Additionally, every statue depicting the likeness of a person or god in Egypt, where the statue is standing with one leg forward, ALL stand with their left leg forward. The right leg is behind the left leg.

Because we, as a majority in America, are "right sided" and therefore learn this dance using our right side, we may be looking at Egyptian dance through a "right-sided" point of view which may distort our image of what is really going on with the Egyptian dancer who is dancing left sided.

How many of you have noticed this little but important detail?

We've paused the chemo for a few weeks to let me take the trip and the Doc seems to strongly feel that it will be good for me to go on the trip, He told me it's best to go now, while i still feel well enough to have fun and I feel ok enough now to go but in a few months might not, so seize the moment,

But the drum solos I know to me are not really Egyptian style. As far as I understand Egyptian style - correct me if I'm wrong, and I mean rather classical Egyptian style not Dina nor Randa - a drum solo is maybe better if it is not so full of so many different tricks, it should not look like bellydance-aerobic (4 to the right, 4 to the left principle), not muscular or rock the body in a hard way, ma.ny flashy jumps or spins or hair tossing, but have some nice vibration and then, all of a sudden, a surprising isolation?
Maybe in this way?
The lady is German and learned in Egypt. To me her style is exactly IT. Actually it is not about styles at all, it is just that relaxed thing, so graceful and feminine that makes this dance look so nice. I love the way she moves her hands and arms and she talks to the audience with gestures and looks.

Hello Everyone,

My question regards dance and Islam. First and foremost, I hope I do not offend anyone...this is purely to gain knowledge in regards to dance, Islam, inter-cultural norms and transitions as well as transnationalism. In other words, how has feelings and beliefs concerning dance changed? How has it changed in regards to religion and changing times? How has it changed in regards to living in different countries? Etc. Specifically my questions are:

*How is dance viewed within Islam? (Historically? Today? In the future?)
*How is dance viewed in terms of women within Islam?
*Dance as transnational, trans-cultural discourse…your views?

There are no right or wrong answers so please feel free to explore this as I am doing the same. Thank you!

Blessings,
If you're curious to see what other Cafepress shops I have, a full list is at www.shira.net/shopping.htm

These Cafepress shops, as well as the Amazon-based bookstore, video store, and music store at the above link are the sole source of funding that pays for the Shira.net web site to exist. I incur several hundred dollars every year in expenses for hosting fees, software upgrades, etc., and these shops generate the income needed to pay for all that. My web site couldn't exist without the support of everyone who buys my merchandise. So, a big THANK YOU to everyone who has purchased something from my shops in the past!

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a link, website, way of finding a copy of this television show entitled "Zizinia." This series highlighted Nagwa Fouad as Badia Masabni (Lebanese pioneer dancer and club owner in the early twentieth century) that came on the television in 1998. I'm assuming this aired in Egypt however I don't have any more details other than that. Thanks!

*POSTED FROM THE BELLY DANCE NATION TRIBE* wanted to post and get this creep gone for good! Please read and repost other places!

This was posted last night by a creepazoid named Vaughnster or ''Lord Vaghuan'', who has been in and kicked out of many online groups, in this case, it was posted through another person in my Yahoo! Bellyrolling females group (and God knows how many other Yahoo! groups in particular). This guy has a bellydance fetish, at least in my opinion, that goes way out-of-bounds, and this posting, which I deleted this AM as soon as I went through it, proves that point (pay attention to the last couple of sentences):

The Vaughanster' s Bellydance Video Conte$t!

1st Place U$S 500
2nd Place U$S 300
3rd Place U$S 100

To enter, prepare a bellydance video just for me. To prove it's just
for me, introduce yourself to me, addressing me as "Lord Vaughan"
or "Vaughanster" , and giving the date right before beginning to
perform.
I'm not setting a time limit, but I recommend that you belly dance
for at least twenty minutes. Save the video on DVD or VHS. I have a
multi-system VCR, TV and DVD player, so format shouldn't be an issue.

Mail it to:

WM VAUGHAN
POB 868
FT FRUM NY
13602 U.S.A.

If you win, you will need to provide an address to send the prize
money to. I prefer to pay via PayPal, in which case, I would only
need the e-mail address associated with the PayPal account you want
me to put the money in. Otherwise, I will need a name and mailing
address to send a check to.

The deadline is St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2007.

Do NOT submit an entry until February, 2007, since I will still be in
Afghanistan in January, and may not receive it!
There is no limit to the number of entries one dancer may submit, but
I will regard each entry separately, on its own merits. In other
words, I won't simply award 1st Place to the dancer who sends me the
most entries or the most footage; I'll choose the three videos I like
the best, and award the prizes accordingly. Yes, it's possible (but
not likely) that I may award all three prizes to the same dancer, if
she sends me the best three entries.

There are no "holds barred" in this contest. Anyone, of any age,
from any country, with any amount of experience, is welcome to submit
as many entries as they like. The winning entries will be the ones I
find myself watching over and over the most.

The following are not requirements, but merely recommendations, since
I've been watching belly dance videos for a quarter of a century, and
already know what I like and don't like:

1. Camera work:

A. Use the best quality of video equipment and material
available to you.
B. Avoid cutting, panning, zooming, and special effects.
Especially avoid cutting. Set the camera up at what would be eye-
level for a man sitting down, and let it roll. Try to create the
illusion that you're performing for me in person, that I'm sitting
still, and the camera is my unblinking eyes.

2. Costume:

A. The most important part of your costume is your body. It
should appear trim and fit.
B. The lower you wear your belt on your hips, the better.
C. Coordinate colors and styles, including the background and
lighting. Performing in ancient attire at a modern gym would
probably look tacky.

3. Dancing

A. Avoid traveling steps.
B. Avoid pointing your bum at the camera.
C. Usually, if not always, your navel should be the focal point
of the camera.

In case you hesitate to trust me, Mesmera of www.mesmera. com, at
mesmera@mesmera. com can vouch for my honesty.

Good luck, and may the best dancer win!

Does Mesmera know of this idiot?!? I've heard of holding bd videoclip contests online, but to make a bd vid and send it in, especially to some1 whose a f'ing creepazoid. This has navelgazer alert written all over it, and feel free to post this and alert others, on Tribe and/or Yahoo!...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yftSkqGDlfM

This is the blurb about it:
1889: L'Exposition Universelle, the French World's Fair, commemorated the Centennial of the French Revolution. The Eiffel Tower, Edison's Electricity Pavillion and "La Rue du Caire" drew millions of visitors to "The City of Lights" during the 6 months it was open. Those lights allowed people to visit after dark and the scandalous "danse du ventre" by the "almees" was particularly enticing...

This film was created in 2003 for the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington DC, for an exhibit about the women impressionists whose work was shown at the Fair.

Here's the rub. I don't do Birthday gigs very often at all and my routine really hasn't changed. At all. I just don't do it enough to put the energy into coming up with new ideas. But since I danced for these people ten years ago and they went through all the trouble of tracking me down again I thought I'd see if anyone had any ideas on how to make this a bit special.

I usually just do two songs dancing normally and then the last song I eventually get the birthday boy (or girl) up and make them dance, wrap a veil around them, get as many people up and dancing as I can and that's that. Nothing big. People love it and it's easy. But that's exactly what I did last time. Maybe they won't remember, but I'd like to change it up a bit.

Do any of you lovelies have any suggestions as to what I might do?

Thanks! :)

I'm curious and would like to see what the teachers and dancers in this tribe think about the subject. Can it be taught? Teachers, is this something that you teach your students? Dancers, is this something that a one masters over time? Do you consciously think about what you projecting when you dance?

I think it's extremely important. I've seen so many dancers who are technically very talented but who have no facial expressions what so ever or who stay very hunched over and disengaged from the audience. While I might enjoy watching her because I understand the skill that she has, an average audience tends to disconnect and get bored. I've also seen some dancers who are just beginning who are captivating and a joy to watch because of their stage presence.

I haven’t really heard much about this subject in all my years of dancing. I’d like to know what you think.

She said that American bellydancers dance to the beat, and Egyptian bellydancers dance to the melody. She showed Ava Fleming doing a lot of pop-locking and gave that as an example.

This was interesting to me because I've heard other people say that Arabic bellydancers grow up with the rhythms, know them - and dance to the rhythm, while Western dancers are used to dancing to the melody.

I personally think both (Egyptian & American style dancers) do both - dancing to the melody AND to the rhythm, and perhaps both at some times. So what do you think? Is there a way to distinguish Egyptian from American style based on this melody vs. rhythm thing?

I'll start with my question since its a simple one I just watched a video of a cane dance on youtube and the woman was dancing to a "beledi" song and everyone posted comments saying that she should have danced to a saidi song. My question is do you have to dance to saidi music when you do a cane dance? Or can you do it to whatever moves you?

Ok now with my problem: Im going to a workshop with my dance teacher this saturday and she wants me to do our (troupe) cane dance but she wants me to make it a solo and she told me to "do something exciting" at the end. I just tried dancing to it and Im drawing a complete and total blank. This dance was my only experience with cane dancing and drum solos are really my strong suit but I cant do one because evidently everyone else will be doing drum solos and she wants me to do something different. Any suggestions on some cool moves that can be done with a cane? Any and all suggestions would be welcome and appreciated! Thanks guys!! :)

I am wondering how many people would be interested in an instructional series of dvds on classical Egyptian dance? From beginning to end movements (including all arm movements, footwork, floor work, etc.), I am anticipating at least 8-10 dvds of one-hour length each. They won't have fancy backgrounds (no flowing curtains, candles, etc.) or fillers of famous or semi-famous dancers performing. Just straight up instruction, precise breakdowns for each movement, and brief examples of how to tie moves together. Is this something you would be interested in? Have you found a dvd or series like this somewhere? Thank you so much for your time and input.
it is very obvious that bellydance if done wrong can harm your joints and vertebrae (uhm - spine-things, how are they called?). But I heard twice now that certain moves (heavy hip drops and twists) can be also harmful for the kidneys (a badly done twist not driven or controlled by the glutes could squeeze them, and a rough hip drop could harm them because of the shock/verberation).

Really? If so, what is to be avoided? Are any other moves problematic? Any other organs in danger (maybe the brain ,from the bouncing shimmy,
...ok THAT is a joke).

I know that I have to go to clubs and listen to what's played, but I have no command of the language, and if I hear something that I like, I probably won't know who the singer/instrumentalist is. Being a musician, I have a good ear and most times can remember a hook or parts of a melody, but I have no ME musicians for friends so I can't pow wow with them to get the info I need.
