I would love to travel to Egypt to study folkloric styles of egyptian dance - baladi, saidi, also khaleegi I am interested in. I am trying to find a place that offers authenticity and genuine culture. Does anyone have any experience/advice for me? Please? ;-)

YASMINA of CAIRO

Yasmina, 'The English Rose of Cairo', has studied, performed and lived the world of oriental dance for more than 25 years. Discovering the form in Morocco in 1983, she began training in London with various teachers, and performed in many of the capital's Arab nightclubs during the late 1980's. Then she began accepting contracts abroad, including India, and an eighteen-month tour of Italy. In 1989 Yasmina began performing regularly in the Middle East, leaving London to dance full-time. Starting with a six-month stay in Morocco, a fitting return to the place where her original passion had been kindled, she danced in many Middle Eastern countries including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (Dubai and Abu Dhabi), Syria and Jordan, before arriving solo in Egypt in the summer of 1995.

Redirecting her style to modern Egyptian with the help of Raqia Hassan and Ibrahim Akef, she quickly secured a contract at the Meridien Heliopolis, where she performed nightly for 3 years. Yasmina has remained in Cairo ever since, appearing with her orchestra at major Cairo venues such as Safir, Pyramisa and the Semiramis Intercontinental hotels, the Nile Maxime, Tivoli Heliopolis, as well as hundreds of weddings and parties in Cairo and around Egypt

I am looking for music that would suit a shamadan choreography, middle eastern rythms and with a traditional egyptian background, but not too traditional, something more modern, with some nice breaks and enough drama to add a few other dancers or have stage effects , etc.
It's driving me crazy, I have something in mind, I just cannot seem to find what I am looking for!! ;-)))
thanks for any help!!

Hello everyone,

First of all, let me introduce myself. I'm new on this tribe. I am a beginner dancer and have been taking classes off and on (Depending on the current economical blahs) and have performed like maybe three times. I am mostly ATS trained and that method of dance is what I am familiar with.

I am in love with the folk and traditional aspects of belly dance. I just gave Turkish 9/8 a gander and am looking to learn more of the Egyptian folk dances. I have seen many videos of progressive baladi dancing and I just love it and was wondering if you all could share your favorite musical choices for this style.

Thank you all so much.

about a bedlah: costuming how-to question

Hello ladies,
I have been bellydancing for several years, tribal fusion and then pure ATS.
However, I have found an incredible teacher and I'm slowly falling in love with Egyptian, too!

I never, ever, EVER thought I would wear those sparkly two-piece sets and now I've purchased one! It's a very basic gold beginner set - not very expensive, but fine for me now.

My question is this: how can I further embellish (and personalize) this oh-so-basic set? It's one of those bra & belt sets covered in sequins, then fringe has been added over top. I'm thinking about adding some kind of crystals for a bit more bling. Can I simply glue them onto the set? Where can I find large ones? Or should I find flatback rhinestones and place them into settings? Also is there any such thing as quality sequins? This sequins on this set are already getting scratched up and looking bad.

My bedlah is solid gold and for now I'd like to keep it that way (easier for me to just switch skirts than to own several costumes at this point). Where do you buy your costuming supplies? especially the embellishments that really add the extra bling?

I'm so new to this style (and my teacher purchases all her costumes ready-to-wear, she doesn't have the info I need).
Thank you for your help!

Comparison and contrast of Egyptian dancers old and new

Dear Egyptian style dancers,
On another forum I recently got into a discussion on the differences between the old time dancers from the 50s and before and the more modern style dancers from the 60s and beyond. I am interested in hearing from other Egyptian style dancers on what they perceive as the differences and similarities between the dancers from both sides of the dividing line.

Some of the similarities I noted:
Same fundamental vocabulary
Same inherent connection to musicality
Same cultural vibe

Some differences I noted

Different emphasis within the music with cleaner accents starting strongly in the 60s... more use of defined pops and locks, if you will
Different use of horizontal space, with the later dancers using the circle as a way to cover space more
More costume variety after the 1970s

I am looking forward to hearing what eeryone has to say as far as what they have noticed!!

Regards,
A'isha

Long Khaleegy Section in song

Hi all,

I've found a song that I really love and have almost finished with the choreo. But I'm stuck on the Khaleegy section. It has a 4-phrase Khaleegy section followed by an 8 count break and a repeat of the Khaleegy with a little more instrumentation. Any advice on what to do here? Would you cut it or dance it? Cutting it will make the song a little short for what I need.

Thanks!

Theatrical Bellydance show auditions

Hello dancers in and near Los Angeles!
I am putting together a Modern Theatrical Bellydance show for a one night performance in a small black box theater. It will be in late Aug. or early Sept.
The show is a presentation of the Orientalist image from paintings, costume design sketches, and cheesecake art from the Industrial Age up to the Golden Age of Classical Bellydance(late 1800's-1950's). The working title is Paintings. Each piece is inspired by an image from Orientalist artwork, when European and American painters traveled to the MidEast for inspiration and they found the fascinating subject of the dancing girls. A flood of Bellydancers became the subject for paintings for several decades, and the turn of the century brought in the highly sexualized, Western interpretation of the "Harem Girl", mostly non-MidEastern ladies depicted in cheesecake poses with tiny bras and sheer pants. Salome was one of the most frequently depicted subjects, and the whole idea of the dangerously sexy femme fatale became wildly popular. A few of the choreos are literally the painting coming to life, while others are inspired by the feeling or look of the artwork.
Rehearsals are not paid; they are 2 hours per week, every Sunday, and I am providing snacks and refreshments. The show will pay a small stipend.
Audition is on June 28th(time and place TBA)
I am looking for 5 female dancers who:
)are proficient in Bellydance and who also have a foundation of Ballet or Modern dance
)have Yoga training and the ability to do backbends and floorwork, or the ability to learn quickly
)There is sword balancing, veil use, and finger cymbals as well, so any of these skills are a plus.

Please message me if interested!
peace and hawt shimmies!

One hole Egyptian zills - do you play them?

For those of you that do folkloric or beladi numbers in your show, do you use the Egyptian style finger cymbals or the Turkish / Vintage Orientale ones? Do any of you know how to make them "talk" by varying the pitch tone? I'm doing research for our up-coming finger cymbal CDs and was wondering how many Egyptian style dancers actually use Egyptian sagat.

This is what they look like: http://www.serpentine.org/zills.html

Dear Forum Members,
I thought I would take a moment to introduce myself. My name is A'isha Azar and I am celebrating my 35th year this year,as an Egyptian belly dancer. ( I can hardly believe its been that long. I must be ANCIENT!!!!!) I am so excited to find and forum that deals with Egyptian dance as a predominant subject. I hope to find many great conversations here, on the subject that is most near and dear to my heart.
Regards,

Hi all,

I don't know if you've had this problem before, wher you find a song you love and then can't find a recording to use? I have that dilema with two in particular: Sert al Hob and Baeed Annak. I own both of the original Oum Khalsoum versions, which of course I can't dance to. (For numerous reasons, which could very well be it's own topic.)

I have found one version of Sert al Hob on one of the Wash Ya Wash cd's, but I just don't think it stacks up to the original! For me it is important that remakes of songs still maintain the original flavor, or at least the original power.

The only recorded version of Baeed Annak I have is from Asala Yousef, which I have similar problems with. I like a lot of her remakes, but more for listening to. I just don't feel the instrumentation is dynamic enough to dance to.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

hello just joined.
i have always had a general fascination with Egyptian lore, beliefs, gods/goddesses etc...
and now that I am a belly dancer, I am really eager to learn teh different ritualistic dances the egyptians did. I know majority of the dances were associated with something religious, the dancers were very respected, to the point of being engravedon teh tombs of some of the pharaoh's because that pharaoh loved them so much.

im mostly just trying to learn the ritualistic dances of the Egyptian at this point

I am simply shocked at the lack of information on the web about bellydancing in egypt. I am at my wits end trying to actually find information beyond "Dina dances at the intercon and it is expensive." I am living in Madaba, Jordan at the moment and I would really love to visit egypt for some indulgence of my love of bellydance. Ideally I would like to take a private lesson or a workshop or two, and finally buy a costume. What I am finding on the internet is that it is easier for me to buy one from an online importer than to actually find information about costume houses in Egypt. My work schedule makes doing one of those "tours" impossible, I have a long weekend to spend there.
So- does anyone here have any advice? Contacts? insha'alla-- addresses??? (or directions... if egypt is anything like Jordan, there is no such thing as an address) If anyone knows of schools, particular dancers who teach regularly, anything!!!!
I am primarily interested in egyptian folkloric style, though more traditional cabaret costuming.

And I know this is an egypt tribe, but if anyone can point me in the direction of where I might find similar information about Turkey or Lebanon, I would seriously love you forever.

DVD topics?

Hello all,

I hope this post isn't considered spam. But I thought since my style is mainly Egyptian, maybe other Egpytian style lovers could help me :-) So, I'm in the works of having my own instructional dvd series with Cheeky Girls Productions, but I'm having trouble deciding what topics to teach.

So, what I would like to do is ask what topics would you like to see that's geared specifically towards Egyptian style? Here are some of my ideas:

-Modern Egyptian Technique and Combos
-Raks Sharqi Chorgography
-Saidi/Assaya Combos or Choreography
-Melaya Luff
-Drum Solo
-Sha'abi

Tell me what you think? What are your ideas?

Thanks so much,
~Ahava

It's been a while since I've poked around on youtube just looking for videos. Much to my delight there are many many more videos being posted. Last I checked there were only 5 or 6 Mona Said ones. Most of them were from the Mona, Nelly, Hanan DVD, with a couple others thrown in; only one of which was from a movie....Here are a couple more!

Dina's beladi singer - new CD

The first Hoda Sinbati is ready ... at least the music. The booklet is almost done, by Feb I promise. It will have the lyrics - translation, transliteration and Arabic script - to all the songs.

Many people have asked me for traditional country songs done in an authentic style. There are 7 wonderful songs on "Ala Mahlik" from around Egypt plus a musical interlude. I have included the original long recordings with the leyali + mawwals and then condensed all of them to versions between 3 - 5 minutes for performing. The album is 78 min. She recorded this with the main musicians of Dina's folkloric band. There are no synthesizers but wicked mizmar and kamanga players, plus the rest.

These are the tracks:

1. In Kan Habibi Asil - If My Lover was Honey 8:10
2. And a-Sawaqi - At Sawaqi 6:47
3. Al-Helou fil-Veranda - Beauty on the Veranda 5:35
4. Souq Bena Ya Ousta - Drive Driver 10:41
5. Ala Warq al-Foul - (Spoil Me) With Jasmin Petals 8:44
6. Tulli min al-Mushrabiyya - Peak Out from the Window 8:30
7. Qalou al-Wada Mawsouf - Sea Shell Fortune Teller 3:22
8. Tahmela - Musical interlude 5:13

SHORT VERSIONS

9. In Kan Habibi Asil - If My Lover was Honey 3:50
10. And as-Sawaqi - At Sawaqi 3:27
11. Al-Helou fil-Veranda - Beauty on the Veranda 3:05
12. Souq Bena Ya Ousta - Drive Driver 4:39
13. Ala Warq al-Foul - With Jasmin Petals 3:21
14. Tulli min al-Mushrabiyya - Peak Out from the Window 3:42

The next album (hopefully) will be "Zill Speak" featuring Artemis. It will be an instructional CD to learn how to play zills - for all levels. She plans to record drills, solo performances, and playing with songs. The booklet will be extensive.

After that I am planning to release Sayyid Darwish and Cairo Blues. There are some very mean beladi progressions on that one, along with surprising rumbas, sambas and improvs to an afriqi beat that is impossible to sit through.

More info is on our web site. Email me if you would like to order it. Through me it is $17.00. For December I have decided to offer my 5 CDs for $65.00. This includes priority mail shipping to anywhere in the US. For international orders it will depend on where you are if there is an extra shipping charge.

The sad story of "Tamra Henna"

I am going to perform Tamra Henna with zils. I will use this version (Jalilah 2) and the choreo is very similar to the one of Naima Akef http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05waCGHTXoI. I feel happy a lot of the time with the music, but I heard that the story told was sad (a girl murdered by a relative for being dishonorable bc in love, family is looking for her, calling her and they can't find her). While in the song Tamra Henna 1 by Jalilah there is a lot of singing ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhXYeifKejs ), this second part has only a short refrain. Oh Tamra Henna...lalalala (don't know) - (somthing) balady - lalalala and so on.
I won't dance the whole piece with a mournful expression just because it doesn't feel like it, every story has ups and downs, sad and joyful moments. but does anyone know what the lyrics say, so I could add a bit of imagination to my dance?

I've asked Tracey G and have not yet got a response from her, but the music in question is on a video about Just Because, the breast-cancer charity for women in Egypt. The link is...

http://www.justbecause.org.uk/

The video just starts playing instantly when you go onto the site...it's the background music that I want to identify. I remember hearing it on a visit to Egypt a couple of years ago and it always moves me. I love it so much and would be ever so grateful if anyone who recognises it might let me know what it is. Thanks.

Rules for Umm Khalsoum-interpretation

Hello! I know that to dance to Oum Khalsoum is the cream and you better do it right. What are the rules though? I understand that you have to dance according to the lyrics.
Here is a dancer I really love. She is a gypsy and has a passionate way about her dancing some people don't want to tolerate because it is definitely not Egyptian (but full of feeling, which Egyptian on the other hand requires). But I wonder about those comments:
"She can dance very well, but unfortunately she doesn't have real understanding for the music of Oum Kalsoum (this song is from Oum Kalsoum). She dances American Cabaret, but if you want to interpret Oum Kalsoum songs, you have to dance Egyptian style. Oum Kalsoum is a legend in the Arab world and you cannot just interpret her songs anyway you want. It has to be the right way and this interpretation, even if the dance look good and aesthetical, is not the right one."

Shashkova does not do "American cabaret". But this isn't the main point.

That would mean, after all, that Oum Khalsoum, although admittedly she is a symbol for Arab culture, does not transcend ethnic boundaries. And in my opinion she does. Of course she does! Ok, you can make an Arab audience feel "expropriated" - but on the other hand they should be proud that their singer has reached much further yet!

Sahra's Egyptian Folkloric Intensive Parts 1 & 2 in Iowa City, Iowa

We will be hosting both Part 1 & Part 2 of Sahra Saeeda's Journey Through Egypt in Iowa City, Iowa in the near future. Part 1 is primarily a lecture/video workshop, with some dance/movement involved, on the historical and cultural foundations. Part 2 is much more focused on dance technique and movement. Each attendee receives a notebook, a DVD, and a certificate of completion.

Sahra holds a Master's Degree in dance ethnology, and did her master's degree thesis work in Egypt. She also worked in 5-star nightclubs in Egypt as a professional dancer. The Journey Through Egypt workshops package the results of her research into a workshop format.

If you're interested in coming, register early, because when we offered Part 1 here in July it sold out a month ahead of time. That's why we're offering it again, along with offering Part 2.

We will accept a maximum of 25 registrations for Part 1, and a maximum of 20 registrations for Part 2. (Sahra requested a smaller class size for Part 2.)

Part 1 will be December 5-7, 2008. Here's a link to the event listing here on tribe.net: http://iowa.tribe.net/event/Sahras-folkloric-intensive-Part-1-in-Iowa-City-Iowa/iowa-city-ia-52240/0a51e45b-8a39-4fb5-8684-97b2462824d6

Part 2 will be January 9-11, 2009. Sahra requires that people complete Part 1 before taking Part 2, but it's okay if you took it somewhere other than Iowa City. Here's a link to the event listing here on tribe.net: http://iowa.tribe.net/event/Sahras-folkloric-intensive-Part-2-in-Iowa-City-Iowa/iowa-city-ia-52240/9eb22061-8dbc-4dc1-9dd3-15dd230e40ec

Here is the registration form, which includes both events on a single form: http://www.kahramandance.org/images/sahra-jte12.pdf

Hello all you fabulous dancers!
My name is Zaria and I just recently moved to the city, Manhattan to be specific. I used to dance way up in Northern California. I have been dancing since i was 3, mostly classical ballet although I have been enjoying the wonderful world of Belly Dance the last 5 of them. I joined a performance group back home and was so happy every time i stepped out onto the scene to perform. Now that I have moved (in order to attend school) I have been itching to dance/perform but I am having trouble finding good and close dance teacher, or possible troupe to join. If anyone could help me I would be ecstatic! I love performing and even one or two shows a month would be great with me. I appreciate any help you can give me! Thank you so much everyone!
Happy Dancing,
Zaria

Baladi & Beyond workshop with Bahaia in Dallas

Hey!
Check out the info below. This is a really special event that is totally worth making a trip to Texas! It will be my last workshop of the year. It's limited enrollment - so you'll want to register and make your plans to attend now. The show is going to be FANTASTIC. Sa'diyya always puts on a class act and the theatre is gorgeous. Last spring, the show sold out. Don't wait! Hope to see some of you there...
xox, Bahaia

Baladi & Beyond with Bahaia
=========================
What’s in a name: Baladi, Beledi, Baladi Taqsim? Baladi – it’s a people, a rhythm, a dance style, a musical style and a formula for improvisation. In Arabic, the word Baladi means “my country” or “my hometown”. Baladi dance is the original women’s solo dance from the Middle East and therefore a precursor to and fundamental influence of Raks Sharki (belly dance).

In this 3 hour workshop, you’ll explore Baladi styling and the roots of the dance with movements that capture the earthy elegance and laid-back simplicity of great Egyptian dancers like Fifi Abdo, Nadia Hamdi and Aida Nour. You will also learn to understand and interpret the improvisational nature of the Baladi Taqsim. This formulaic style of music encapsulates the very heart and soul of Arabic music with inspired melodic solos, call and response, and a paced rhythmic build that finishes in a frenzy!

You will walk away with steps, styling, ideas and concepts that can be immediately incorporated to develop and refine your own personal style and improve your overall dance presentation.

Get ready to bring out the Baladi in YOU!

My studio is starting to explore folkloric Egyptian dances. My topic is Melaya Leff. I have some basic information (and I will get the back issue of Zaghareet on this subject). However, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations on music that they like to use.

I have two pieces that I know of :
Melaya Laff from Raks Ayoub
Banat Baharei form Wash Ya Wash 2

Dina in Egypt, Is Belly Dancing dead?

Belly dancer fears her art is dying
Nadia abou el Magd, Foreign Correspondent
Last Updated: June 30. 2008 10:16PM UAE / GMT

Dina, Egypt’s most famous belly dancer, performs at the Haroun el Rashid Club in the Semiramis InterContinental Hotel in Cairo. Victoria Hazou for The National
CAIRO // At about 2.30am on a Saturday, Dina, Egypt’s most famous belly dancer, slinks on to the stage of Haroun el Rashid Night Club wearing a revealing pink outfit, accompanied by the sound of her trademark music.

Without an introduction she eases into her routine, gyrating her hips and rolling her stomach in slow, sensual motions, gradually raising the tempo with ever more daring and titillating movements of her thighs and torso.
The audience, made up of upper class Egyptians, Gulf businessmen and tourists as well as a smattering of westerners, is enthralled.

Dina is practising an art that dates back to the Pharaohs, but belly dancing, or raqs sharqi, is these days more often condemned as immoral than celebrated as a national pastime, as religious conservatism grows in Egypt.

In May, Dina caused an uproar after giving a brief performance at a high school party. Apart from the storm that ensued in the media, 17 Islamist and independent lawmakers filed an urgent inquiry with the education minister, and Nabih al Wahsh, a well-known lawyer, filed a lawsuit against her for “seducing students”.
Ali Laban, a legislator and member of the Muslim Brotherhood, called for talks with the culture, education and interior ministers, while Sherif Omar, who heads the education committee in parliament and is a member of the ruling National Democratic Party, referred to the incident as a “catastrophe”.

Dina, in her forties and who goes only by her first name, was taken aback by the reaction, though it is far from the first time her dancing has raised the ire of conservatives.
“When I heard that my dancing for five minutes while wearing a jeans and T-shirt in the prom party [caused such offence], I was shocked,” she said, sipping a cappuccino and smoking a cigarette in the cafe of the Semiramis InterContinental Hotel in Cairo, where she performs three times a week.

“Sometimes I feel I get used to these things, but I don’t, because they never cease to amaze me,” she said.
In Oct 2006, Dina was widely blamed – by officials, the media and the public – after scores of young men chased women through downtown Cairo groping them and pulling off their clothes – even those wearing Islamic headscarves and face veils.

She had been dancing with a popular singer in front of a downtown cinema to advertise a movie that was playing during Eid, and allegedly aroused the men, causing them to run riot.
“This accusation made me laugh,” Dina said. “I couldn’t believe I could be responsible for unleashing a sexual uprising by hundreds of men. It’s just unbelievable.”

Famed for her green eyes, long black hair, and voluptuous figure, sculpted by more than 20 years of dancing, Dina is now one of the only well-known belly dancers in Egypt.

“I see no hope or future for belly dancing in Egypt,” she said. “Ten years ago we were so many. Each one had her own style and audience, whether first-class belly dancers, or second and third class. Now I look around and see nobody.”
According to the Egyptian Arts Authority, 5,000 professional belly dancers were registered in the 1950s, compared with less than 100 today.

While belly dancing is legal, dancers cannot perform on state-owned television in Egypt. And in an attempt to reduce the number of dancers, authorities are giving fewer licences to foreigners and making it difficult for them to renew existing ones..

Police also monitor nightclubs to ensure that dancers’ costumes are sufficiently modest, with slitted skirts that must start below the knee. The navel is always supposed to be covered, if only by transparent material.
According to Dina, who holds an master of arts in philosophy from Cairo University, the belly dancing outfits are the main cause of controversy in Egypt, rather than the dance itself.

“I think the problem some have with belly dancing here is the dancing costume; but it has always been seductive like this, we [our generation] didn’t invent it. Like ballet – can the ballerina dance with a different outfit? We too can’t dance with our bodies covered,” she said.
Wearing a beige tank top and tightfitting pants, and a golden necklace studded with blue charms, Dina said it was becoming increasingly difficult to be accepted as a belly dancer in Egypt, where 90 per cent of Muslim women wear the veil and the trend towards conservative Islam is growing.

“If I had a daughter, I would advise her not to become a belly dancer,” said Dina, who is a widow and the mother of an eight-year-old boy named Ali.
“It’s very tough being a belly dancer in Egypt.

“I surround myself with people who love dancing, and who are very understanding, so I don’t get the feeling that I’m doing something wrong at all,” she said. “But when these problems happen from time to time, it’s a reminder that many people look down on dancing, and that it’s [seen as] shameful.”

Yet demand for belly dancing in Egypt is still high among those who approve of it, especially among the rich who can afford to pay the LE12,000 per hour (Dh8,250) rate that Dina and her band charge to perform at private functions.
“I still dance at many weddings,” Dina said. “Most of the brides are veiled but they don’t stop dancing with me and their groom all night long. For Egyptians who can afford it, a wedding means a belly dancer.”

Suha Abdel Wahab, 30, is one such Egyptian. “Of course I would never imagine myself being a belly dancer,” Mrs Wahab said. “But I had Dina at my wedding, that was a dream come true.”

Still, people like Mrs Wahab seem to be the exception.
“At my wedding, I slaughtered sheep and distributed to the poor, by the same amount of money that I would have paid to a belly dancer,” said Rasha Moustafa, 29, who wears the veil.

“I think God would bless a marriage that begins by feeding the poor not wasting money on belly dancers.”

Nonetheless, in the face of growing disdain for her profession, Dina sees herself as “the guardian of belly dancing”, and vows to continue doing what she loves.
“Belly dancing is in our blood, it’s deeply rooted in our soil,” she said. “I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

“When I get old, and can’t dance anymore, I will train belly dancers. I just hope there will be ones to train.”

Imagine you stand in front of, let's say, Dina's band or another fabulous Arab ensemble, and you can pick one of the musicians to play for you. Which instrument would you go for?
Me I love the accordion right now. Second maybe the ney.
I would like to explore the relationship dancers have with instruments.
Who likes the oud? How do you dance to it?
Can you recommend a cd with instrumental solos that allow you to explore the character of each instrument?

Hi,
Hello from RI
I only recently discovered the power and beauty of Egyptian Dance in NYC when I watched some gorgeous dancers from Yousry's weeklong perform at the Lafayette bar & grille.During these 7 years of study I never felt connected to the Egyptian style from watching either the old classics or the videos from the Cairo festivals - but when I saw those wonderful dancers up close it changed me forever and now I too suddenly understand the deep love for egyptian dance - it is such a journey to study ME. Oriental, Raks/ Belly Dance in a small conservative town, east coast, little RI

I'M GOING TO CAIRO!!

Hey everybody!

So after sitting on pins and needles for almost a year, I have finally been accepted into the American Univeristy in Cairo for a study abroad program this upcoming fall. I will be there for about 4 months. Trying to find out about the dance scene in Cairo is difficult as I don't know where to go online wise (most 'over there' sites are the easiest sites in the world to navigate) So my questions are...

Who should I see?
Where should I go to see them?
Where should I go for costumes? (Eman Zaki, but who else?) I plan on buying 2
Who should I take from?
Are there any events I should be aware of?
Where else would you recommend to travel? I will be traveling to Jordan to visit family, so any dancers there?

I know I will be trying to get in contact with Raqia for sessions, but who else? Does Nagwa Fouad teach outside of Ahlan Wa Sahlan? I feel so disconnected from Egypt, but I'm about to go for a couple of months and I want to take full advantage of this opportunity of a life time. If there isn't something on my post I should know, point it out and give me direction!

Thank you all for your input!

~Majda

Drum solo composition. Rules?

Hi, I heard that to dance a drum solo there are certain rules. If you know them, that is places in the music that call for a certain way of interpretation or else other places where you are free to do what you like (of course it should always match) - then you have the basic guidelines to choreograph and improvise. These rules are supposed to be taught here in a row of workshops. My teacher won't tell us although I share a regular private lesson with a friend because she said that's the workshop stuff (=you're not getting it within the private lessons). Ok that's her deal. So far I have made efforts to study the rhythms on my own and to find out about characteristical moves, studying on youtube, dvd and tribe. I heard of the question-answer-game (which I think is quite audible in the music). But what about rules? Do you know rules for drum solo dancing?

Showing the palms of the hands question

Okay - I've heard it again and again, do NOT show the palms of your hands to the audience because it is a major insult.... and yet, over and over again, I see Egyptian dancers, both past and present, who do so. Is this something that came out of ballet? If it is truely an insult, then why are they (Egyptian dancers) doing it ? I just finished watching my video of Fifi Abdu (sp?) again, for example, and there she is with a stop-the-presses straight arm out at a 30 degree angle, and the palm facing out like a salute, and the other hand/palm is facing out while it frames the side of her head, hand slightly behind her ear. Someone please help me clear this up. ;-) (Shrugs in confusion)...

Hi, Dance sisters,

On another tribe there was a discussion about the "Egyptian knee shimmy". I have been taught by some very well known people and the knee pumping (without hyperextending the knees back) is the correct way to do this.

Please help me with this. I know there are 2 schools of thought out there: do it or don't do it.

Please share with me your thoughts.

Thanks!

Hi. Is chiftetelli THE rhythm of taqasim? or are there others? I thought that chiftetelli was genuinely Turkish although it sure can be found in Egyptian music, so I wonder if in classical Egyptian there would be also other rhythms for it?

Hey loverlies!!!!

I have a student who just started Egyptian Cab with me and is moving back home to Birmingham, England.

She really seems to enjoy it and I want to make it easier for her to continue her BD lessons when she goes back home by getting her in touch w/some people there.

Does anyone know of any good teachers there? She's a really lovely, smart, sweet lady and might need help working around her med school schedule.

Any help that can be given would be very much appreciated.

Hugs & shimmies,

The lady who runs the gym I teach at called me yesterday. She said a member asked her if I might be interested in performing at a birthday party for her boss who is an Arab. Now, I have danced at festivals, a retirement home, the Juggling Gypsy (an eclectic restaurant/hookah bar), and birthday parties but never for someone from the Middle East. I haven’t called the lady yet because I guess I’m trying to decide what I want to do. I’m really torn. I’d love to do this but I don’t what to accidental offend him or him be disappointed because I might not dance perfect Egyptian style. Not that I'm a terrible dancer! lol. I just know you have to be very careful.
I guess I’m throwing this out to get a little input or any experience in a similar situation anyone is willing to share.

Anyone wanna post links to their fave drum solos? I have a good start--I think--but it seems my choreography doesn't travel enough, and I need to look at what the pros do. . . Thank you!

Egyptian Ministry of Culture?

Hello all,

I had a random question about obtaining a license to dance in Cairo. I have no intention or want to dance professionally in Cairo, but I'm curious as to how one obtains a license to do so. Is there a written exam? Just an application? Does the ministry need to see you dance or your costuming? How long does the license last? I've tried to look them up online, but any link is an empty page or doesn't exist.

*Hopefully* I will be going to Egypt this upcoming fall for study abroad, but of course I will be geeking out about dance. I was just curious about this process, but let me state that I will not be looking to obtain a license!

Left Sided or Right Sided?

OK....

Here's another piece of trivia which may or may not be important...although, I believe it is extremely important.

About 90 percent of Egyptian dancers -- pre Fifi Abdo, anyway -- are left sided. In fact Fifi herself is left sided. That is not to say that she is left handed, but rather left sided and executes or starts movement more on her left side rather than her right side. We in the USA are right sided and start or execute movement on our right side rather than our left side. In fact, many left handed dancers are taught right sided.

I've observed the following (and many many more not listed):

Fifi Abdo - ties scarf on left hip/ uses left hip, slit on left side; cane in right hand; favors left hip
Nahed Sabry - left hipped
Katie - left shoulder; turns right; favors left hip
Shosho - left handed; left sided
Nebawiya Moustafa - left hipped; ties scarf of left hip
Taheyia Karioka - left hipped; begins most of her moves on left hip; travels left mostly
Zinat Aloui - left sided
Hind Rostom (an actress dancing in movies) - left sided
Zizi Moustafa - left sided

I've observed numerous others including, but not limited to, Hanan, Nelly, Mona El Sayed, Hoda Shams El Din and others. Many of these dancers are left sided as well.

This is another topic I addressed on Med-dance list and was instantly shunned -- a topic having no importance whatsoever in the dance. I think it is very important to observe Egyptian dancers in everything they do and to understand why it is that they do it. My take on it is that Egyptians write from right to left so many may be left sided as a result of ending their sentences on the left. We, in America, write from left to right and so we take many of our steps beginning with our right foot. Additionally, every statue depicting the likeness of a person or god in Egypt, where the statue is standing with one leg forward, ALL stand with their left leg forward. The right leg is behind the left leg.

Because we, as a majority in America, are "right sided" and therefore learn this dance using our right side, we may be looking at Egyptian dance through a "right-sided" point of view which may distort our image of what is really going on with the Egyptian dancer who is dancing left sided.

How many of you have noticed this little but important detail?

My latest album, Pulse of the Sphinx, is now available - with the booklet free of charge to follow in the summer. Recorded in Cairo by the Henkesh brothers it is full of wonderful solos by Egypt's master drummers. It has 10 performance solos, one live performance from Egypt (with 10 percussionists), one 7 minute instructional track with the rhythms and basic sounds, and 6 drill solos of unusual rhythms. There are over 76 minutes on the CD. For more info or to order please look here:

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if any of you have attended the Ahlan Wa Sahlan festival in Cairo, Egypt? And if so, how much did your whole trip cost (airfare and everything else....how much did the festival cost?)? I am trying to see how much I should save up to attend, and wondering if I could pull it off this year.

Thanks

Hey everyone!

So some of my troupemates and I are performing at the Boulder City Renaissance Faire this weekend, and I will be improvising a cane solo! YIKES! ;)

The good news is, I know the music so well, I can sing it to you backwards in my sleep. (Mizmar taxsim included! HA!)

I would just like for everyone to pray that my cane does not get stuck in my costume at any point. I practiced last night in full costume, so it should be fine...but...you know how performances go!!! :)

Hello everyone,
I will be in Cairo for a week in about a week, and while there, wondered if Mona is performing. Does anyone know if she, or anyone else that we know and love is performing anywhere that week? We are staying at the Four Seasons, so the concierge should be able to tell us, but I wanted to do some research up front in case getting tickets is hard.

I am soooo excited,. It is my first time going. The sad part is the trip is due to me currently getting treated after surgery for a brain tumor, and I may very well have a short time to live. We've paused the chemo for a few weeks to let me take the trip and the Doc seems to strongly feel that it will be good for me to go on the trip, He told me it's best to go now, while i still feel well enough to have fun and I feel ok enough now to go but in a few months might not, so seize the moment,

thanks in advance for any information,
Tara

(cross post) Raqia Hassan hasn't posted it on her website yet, but it apparently the Mena House will have renovations completed enough to host Ahlan Wa Sahlan again this year! Yay! http://www.oberoimenahouse.com/index.asp?leftinfo=1&leftitem=1
There is a limited number of rooms available at the Mena house however. Scheherezade Imports http://scheherezadeimports.com/tourEgypt.asp only has 3 rooms left in their allotment. Lucy is extremely helpful and she and her staff are really dedicated to help you get the most of your trip.
The festival agency also only has a limited number of rooms; which are higher cost pyramid views or palace rooms. Other hotel options offered through the agency are the Meridian, Sofitel or Grand Pyramid. I don't know how close they are to the festival. Maybe someone here does and can post?

Drum solos in Egyptian Style

Hi, I want to learn a choreo to Wahashtini and, to make it a set, add a drum solo. I would like to stay in Egyptian style, relaxed, joyful, minimalistic. But the drum solos I know to me are not really Egyptian style. As far as I understand Egyptian style - correct me if I'm wrong, and I mean rather classical Egyptian style not Dina nor Randa - a drum solo is maybe better if it is not so full of so many different tricks, it should not look like bellydance-aerobic (4 to the right, 4 to the left principle), not muscular or rock the body in a hard way, ma.ny flashy jumps or spins or hair tossing, but have some nice vibration and then, all of a sudden, a surprising isolation?
Maybe in this way?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zaEG0n3Gjn4

How would Dandash do a drum solo?

I'm not so sure of what I'm saying here. do you have an idea about this or a recommendation? Are there drum solo compositions I might get through iTunes that serve such a purpose? (If I hear many interesting accents I feel like it is not ok just to step over them and pretend they're not there, I like best Thilia for drum solo cause she answers to each vibe the drum solo, only I can't dance not near as well as her, so I need a much easier drum solo).

Cane Question

I'm working on my first cane choregraphy, and there is a perfect spot in the sond to balance the cane on my head. However, though I have seen many dancers do this, I've also heard that it may be inappropriate in the traditional sense. Have any of you ever heard this as well? If so, where did you hear it?

Thanks!

I present you my new youtube-love. I hope she'll be my teacher soon (if I can make it and get the money together). It's going to be teacher-worship of the worst! Because I am so lucky that she lives in my country! And yes, all of you who are against youtube: I wouldn't know about her if there wasn't this youtube!
The lady is German and learned in Egypt. To me her style is exactly IT. Actually it is not about styles at all, it is just that relaxed thing, so graceful and feminine that makes this dance look so nice. I love the way she moves her hands and arms and she talks to the audience with gestures and looks.
Ah, and who is the singer on this version of Tamr Henna? Such a voice! It is not the recording Tamr Henna 1 from Jalilah I got although it is very similar but the voice of the singer is more beautiful. Has it been rerecorded maybe even with Faizal Ahmed?

A friend of mine had a video of a National Geographic special on Egypt which featured a 20 minute or so segment on Lucy. This must have been at least ten years ago. I'd love to find it again. Does anyone remember this (am I dating myself? eessh!) or have any idea where I'd find such a thing? I've googled myself out looking for it.

Thanks!

Hi,
could anyone post links to articles on Shaabi?
How is Shaabi different from Balady? What is great fun shaabi-music? Is there modern Shaabi?
I understand you don't float on half pointe when dancing shaabi or subtleties like that. But could someone tell me about some typical moves or the other way round, things you don't do when shaabiying?
I saw the youtube clips from the shaabi singers with some dancing which looked pretty repetetive. I also watched Shaabi Shake, the choreo by Nath Keo which looks like fun: http://youtube.com/watch?v=s9iUG_T_y2Q&feature=related
