Looking for two films...

Hi all,

I'm new to this tribe, and am very happy to discover it! I'm working on some papers dealing with the portrayal of dancers in film and the Egyptian feminist movement in the 40's and 50's. I am also looking into the political activism of bellydancers during WWII which leads me to my question - does anyone know where I can get a hold of the biographical films on Badia Masabni and Hikmat Fahmi? I find the odd reference to them, but can't seem to find them for sale anywhere. I know the Badia Masabni film is from the 1940's, but The Spy Hikmat Fahmi is from 1994, so I would have expected it to be more accesible. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Have you tried these web sites?

    www.fineartfilm.com
www.rashid.com - if the site doesn't have it, try phoning them to ask if they can get it
    www.aramovies.com

Also, have you discovered the book by Viola Shafik titled Popular Egyptian Cinema - Gender Class and Nation?

Thanks! I just took a peek at rashid.com and it's great, they've got several other videos I've been looking for! Yes, I have Viola Shafik's book, I actually bought it in Egypt (kinda stupid since I could have bought it over here cheaper and saved myself an extra pound and some space in my suitcase for other shiny things...) I also have her other book, Arab Cinema, which deals with other ME countries, it's interesting to compare.

There was a film made on the life of Hikamt Fahmy in 1994, starring Nadia al-Gindi as Hikmat. The film is also known as AL- GASOUSAH HIKMAT FAHMI, directed by HOUSSAM EDDINE MOSTAFA.
Hikmat was actually a spy for the Germans, and spent 2 years imprisoned by the British for it! I'm very interested in the political activities of dancers but am having a difficult time finding reliable primary sources for the information.

I have been corresponding with a fellow is a real fan of old U.S. movies and television shows. Yesterday he sent me an email regarding a documentary that mentions Hekmet Fahmy. He says the title is Secrets of War, it's narrated by Charlton Heston, and apparently it has several episodes (ie, a tv series), so before buying anything take care to make sure you choose the one that has her in it.

He also mentioned a Time-Life book called War in the Desert that also has information about her. I ordered a used copy of it through Amazon. Just placed the order yesterday, so it hasn't come yet.

I just saw that you had posted these two bits of info on Hikmat Fahmi. How was the Time Life book? anything useful or juicy?

The mention of Hekmet in the Time Life book was very cursory. It was interesting, but didn't offer any depth. If you wanted to see a larger context of World War II activity in North Africa, then the mention of Hekmet would fit into the larger picture. But if you have already done a good bit of reading, or if you wanted to focus specifically on Hekmet without reading much about the rest of the North Africa aspects to the war, then the Time-Life book probably wouldn't offer much value.

Last week when I was in Egypt, I was staying with Caroline Afifi (from the UK) and her husband. Her husband used to be a major in the Egyptian police force, and his father was a general in the 1960's war against Israel. So I thought maybe he'd know something about Hekmet. I asked, and yes, he did know some.

You probably already know this, but Anwar Sadat, who was in the Egyptian military at the time, used to feed information about the Allied troupe movements to Hekmet. She would then pass the information on to the Germans. She was eventually captured and imprisoned.

She was NOT famous as a dancer. Ie, history probably would have forgotten her if it hadn't been for the spy issue.

Thanks! That 's interesting that her husband had heard of her. I have asked rashid.com to track down the 1970 film about her, but apparently the movie is really bad and not historically accurate, so we'll see!

I suspect that any concrete evidence would probably only be found in British gov't documents, as they were the ones who captured and interrogated her. I did find a brief mention of her in a book called "Hitler's Espionage Machine" where they did talk a little about her involvement with Sadat, and a lover who brought English officers to her in order for her to get info out of them using her "wiles". Now I have to figure out how to get to the UK and get my hands on those British docs! I've got this in my head that I have to find out more about her, as I only recently came across mention of her and I think it's fascinating! I'm quite interested in the political activities of bellydancers.
