I still read Interview almost yearly, as I've been doing since I was 11 years old. But frankly, I despise Lestat (and love mopey Louis) and I think the majority of the other vampire novels she wrote were dreck. I also enjoyed Witching Hour and destested everything that came after it. As far as I'm concerned her best works are The Mummy, The Feast of All Saints and Cry to Heaven. Yep, all stand alone works with no disappointing follow ups. Then there's her whole return to the Catholic Church ("Hey God, I was just kidding all those years I said you didn't exist and the porn was just a phase. No hard feelings, right?") and her even more disturbing move from the New Orleans mansion to the suburbs. Oh and let's not forget that life of Jesus book. So, has she failed us? Betrayed us? Or do we still worship her for the dark glory that was? Now that we're old and jaded, how do we really feel about her literarey prowess? Was she just in the right place at the right time or did she really create enduring literature? OK gang, weigh in!

Maila Nurmi, TV's Vampira, dies at 85 By JACOB ADELMAN, Associated Press Writer
Tue Jan 15, 8:55 AM ET

Maila Nurmi, whose "Vampira" TV persona pioneered the spooky-yet-sexy Goth aesthetic, has died, coroner's officials said. She was 85.

Nurmi died Thursday afternoon at her Hollywood home, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Fred Corral said. The cause of death has not been determined, Corral said.

Nurmi created her Vampira character — reminiscent of Charles Addams' spooky New Yorker cartoons — to host horror movie broadcasts on KABC TV in Los Angeles in 1954.

With darkly mascaraed eyes and blood-red lipstick, Nurmi appeared each week in her revealing black dress and slinky fishnets to introduce such films as "Revenge of the Zombies" and "Devil Bat's Daughter."

"The Vampira Show" was canceled after about a year, but Nurmi remained a cult figure among B-movie buffs and is thought to have inspired the vampish Morticia Addams on "The Addams Family," which premiered about 10 years later.

But Nurmi's cultural resonance did not translate into long-term wealth. In 1989, she lost a $10 million lawsuit that contended Cassandra Peterson's late-night horror hostess Elvira pirated her character.

"There is no Elvira. There's only a pirated Vampira," she was quoted as saying in an Associated Press story at the time. "Cassandra Peterson slavishly copied my product and made a fortune. America has been duped."

Among Nurmi's scattered film appearances following her TV career was a cameo in Ed Wood's 1959 cult classic, "Plan 9 From Outer Space." Nurmi was played by Lisa Marie in "Ed Wood," Tim Burton's 1994 tribute to the B-movie director.

Nurmi was born Maila Elizabeth Syrjaniemi in Finland on Dec. 11, 1922 and emigrated with her family to Ohio, said Heather Saenz, a friend.

In her late teens she went to New York, where she fell in with a clique of actors and artists and moved with them to Hollywood to seek a film career, Saenz said. She worked as a chorus girl and model before appearing as Vampira, Saenz said.

Nurmi supported herself late in her life by selling handmade jewelry, Saenz said.

Saenz and her husband, Bryan Moore, met Nurmi in 2005 when they recruited her to serve as grand marshal in a procession of hearses sponsored by Los Angeles' Petersen Automotive Museum.

Moore said he plans to transport Nurmi's casket in a vintage 1951 hearse that appeared in a scene of "Ed Wood."

Moore said he plans to transport Nurmi's casket in the same hearse she rode in at the parade — a vintage 1951 vehicle that appeared in a scene of "Ed Wood."

"So that's going to be Vampira's last ride," he said.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Nurmi has no known surviving family, Moore said.

Vikings Came From the gothic Tribes?

Good evening all, I thought I would post a theory here and see what others had to say about it.

As you may recall from history, the Vikings were great explorers and adventurers. Having developed out of the earlier Goths (or GahTSK), these Norsemen traveled and migrated all over. As the Visigoths or Western Goths, they ransacked the Western Roman Empire and penetrated as far as North Africa. And, as the Ostrogoths or Eastern Goths they moved into the Balkans and then settled in Italy (attempting to reform the early Roman Church). Moreover, the less well known Yugogoths or Southern Goths migrated Eastward and settled along the Silk Road to China, where they eventually founded the Jewish State of Kazaria.

[Scandia Faith (Cross) Shield]However, most interesting of them all, were the Norigoths or as we say GahTSK (literally the Ancient Northern Peoples of God). During the so called Dark Ages, these Peoples came to dominate all of Scandanavia and the Baltic Region, as well as much of the rest of Northern Europe (especially in the Vidfadmi Era). But, as time passed, they split into two groups. The more holy descendants went Eastward, into Russia, where they became the Varangians. And from there, they went farther Eastward to China (and legends even hold that they showed up in Japan, perhaps among the Ainu). The less holy and more Pagan descendants went into Western Europe, as the Vikings, and from there arrived in the New World of America.

So, their track record for exploration, adventuring, and migration is well established. They were a Peoples on the move. And, always in search of greener pastures (or treasures around the next bend of the river). Moreover, the stories and legends of their exploits are still remembered today.

[Historical Literature (Scroll) Shield]However, among all their achievements and discoveries from their travels, the most important one is almost forgotten! Or, simply ignored by the modern sophisticates who scoff and say it could not be done. But then, accounts of other Viking exploits, which were held impossible, have, in fact, turned out to be true! (Witness the old Viking legends that they had discovered America, which we now know to be fact from archaeology.) So, just because it seems incredible, does not mean that it did not happen, for the Vikings accomplished many unbelievable things!

So, what are we talking about here? (You may ask.) Well, it is such a great discovery, that if it is true, then it is more than amazing. It is a fact that we all need to know about! And, I am speaking here of the obscure legend that the Vikings actually discovered a Route to Heaven! Now, at first glance, that may seem totally unbelievable, but let us examine the facts that we can gather, to see if there is any solid basis to this legend.

[Nordesel Unity Shield]Perhaps one of the major mysteries of the Norsemen is their original name of Goths. The word Goth comes from a more primitive term of GuDT, which means God. Thus, the Goths (or pre-Vikings) were the Northern Peoples of God (which is why we call them GahTSK). Now, if their name comes from God, is it possible that they had some knowledge of HIM? I'd say that was obvious! And, if they knew about God and HIS Realm in Heaven, is it really too much to think that they might have known how to get to Heaven to be with HIM? Again, I do not think it is beyond reason. Rather, it seems entirely possible that they could have had some such kind of knowlegde!

So in reading this, Asatru is an actual religion from a Gothic Culture.

What does every one else think?

So here's the situation; My husband and I are 40 and have no children by choice. Interestingly enough, as fate would have it, we are about to become guardians for my 12 year old cousin. We are delighted and terrified. Here's how it happened; Last September I flew out to California to visit family, primarily my grandmother who was doing very poorly (as it turned out, a good thing I did as she passed away just a few months later) and while I was there my little cousin (11 then) came home from school to find her mother dead on the couch. I had not seen her since she was a toddler so I really met her for the first time on the night her mother died. We bonded instantly though and I completely fell in love with this thin pale girl with the masses of raven curls who was clearly 11 going on 35. Since then she has been mostly staying with her grandmother, my aunt, as we subsequently found out her father (my aunt's son) is completely hooked on drugs and is, as of now, homeless. However, my aunt is not in the best of health either and being a mom all over again is beyond her though she has tried very valiantly. The girl (her name is Sorcha, how's that for cool as hell?)has always been an only child and her mother had a lot of problems so she pretty much has raised herself. In addition, her mother kept her away from her father's side of the family (a typical tale of a bitter divorce when Sorcha was still a toddler)and the upshot is that Sorcha is WILDLY different from the rest of my family and they frankly don't know what to make of her. She's bookish and morbid and there's a constant struggle over her wardrobe, which she would prefer to be solid black. And while I was very fortunate growing up in that my immediate family was very accepting of my weirdness (my grandmother once said to me, "Of course we don't understand you sweetheart but that's OK, you be just as strange as you want because we love you anyway." Best gift she ever gave me)alas, Sorcha's family is afraid of what they don't understand and so have been ceaseless in their efforts to change her. She won my heart completely when one of her aunts (my older cousins) said to her, "But sweetie, you'd be so CUTE in pink" and Sorcha very calmly replied, "I don't want to be cute, I want to be beautiful and mysterious." At any rate (excuse the rambling, it's still early and I'm still on my first cup of coffee)in the next few weeks she'll be coming to live with us. My husband and I are both only children as well and so we're rather uniquely qualified to deal with the eccentricities and need for privacy of an only child, and while we know it will be no cake walk we are both ready and willing to take this on.
So here's my appeal to those of you who are parents out there; I will need my goth parent support group! Are your kids goth? What are the challenges I can expect her to be facing in middle school right now? How best can I support her uniqueness and yet be vigilant that she isn't going overboard? Black clothes, yes, cutting, no! What challenges have you faced being both goth and parents? Have you felt the need to "tone it down" now that you have children? And above all, feel free to dispense any advice you may have about parenting a young teen in general! LOL
Many thanks for reading.
Regards, Alex

DEAR ABBY: I recently witnessed something that renewed my faith in the younger generation.I was on my way to a craft festival recently and was passing under a freeway overpass. There were the usual homeless people asleep under the bridge, including one man who was sprawled on the concrete. Two young people walking by wore spiked hair, piercings, tattoos -- the whole "Goth" look.
One of them bent down next to the homeless man, then stood up and kept walking. I was concerned about what they might have done, so I walked over to the man. I found the young man had left a bottle of water for the homeless man.
I ran to catch up with the couple and told them I had seen what they did and wanted to shake their hands. The young man just shrugged and said he thought the man might be thirsty.
With young people like that walking our streets, I no longer worry about the future of our country. -- JOEL IN AUSTIN, TEXAS
DEAR JOEL: Your letter, like the previous one, is a breath of fresh air. By not prejudging a person by his or her appearance we can put an end to stereotyping. Thank you for sharing your experience with me and my readers.

I saw this in another tribe and had to share it. Some days ago I saw it on the internet (it was on a religious web site that I can't find again) but didn't occur to me to copy it. Your thoughts, please...

Listed below are some warning signs to indicate if your child may have gone astray from the Lord.

Gothic (or goth) is a very obscure and often dangerous culture that young teenagers are prone to participating in. The gothic culture leads young, susceptible minds into an imagined world of evil, darkness, and violence. Please seek immediate attention through counseling, prayer, and parental guidance to rid your child of Satan's temptations if five or more of the following are applicable to your child:

-Frequently wears black clothing.

-Wears band and/or rock t-shirts.

-Wears excessive black eye makeup, lipstick or nail polish.

-Wears any odd, silver jewelry or symbols. Some of these include: reversed crosses, pentagrams, pentacles, ankhs or various other Satanic worshipping symbols.

-Shows an interest in piercings or tattoos.

-Listens to gothic or any other anti-social genres of music. (Marilyn Manson claims to be the anti-Christ, and publicly speaks against the Lord. Please discard any such albums IMMEDIATELY.)

-Associates with other people that dress, act or speak eccentrically.

-Shows a declining interest in wholesome activities, such as: the Bible, prayer, church or sports.

-Shows an increasing interest in death, vampires, magic, the occult, witchcraft or anything else that involves Satan.

-Takes drugs.

-Drinks alcohol.

-Is suicidal and/or depressed.

-Cuts, burns or partakes in any other method of self-mutilation. (This is a Satanic ritual that uses pain to detract from the light of God and His love. Please seek immediate attention for this at your local mental health center.)

-Complains of boredom.

-Sleeps too excessively or too little.

-Is excessively awake during the night.

-Dislikes sunlight or any other form of light. (This pertains to vampires promoting the idea that His light is of no use.)

-Demands an unusual amount of privacy.

-Spends large amounts of time alone.

-Requests time alone and quietness. (This is so that your child may speak to evil spirits through meditation.)

-Insists on spending time with friends while unaccompanied by an adult.

-Disregards authority figures; teachers, priests, nuns and elders are but a few examples of this.

-Misbehaves at school.

-Misbehaves at home.

-Eats excessively or too little.

-Eats goth-related foods. Count Dracula cereal is an example of this. (*Remark: it's Count Chocula, not Dracula, idiots.)

-Drinks blood or expresses an interest in drinking blood. (Vampires believe this is how to attain Satan. This act is very dangerous and should be stopped immediately.)

-Watches cable television or any other corrupted media sources. (Ask your local church for proper programs that your child may watch.)

-Plays videos games that contains violence or role-playing nature.

-Uses the internet excessively and frequently makes time for the computer.

-Makes Satanic symbols and/or violently shakes head to music.

-Dances to music in a provocative or sexual manner.

-Expresses an interest in sex.

-Masturbates

-Is homosexual and/or bisexual.

-Pursues dangerous cult religions. Such include: Satanism, Scientology, Philosophy, Paganism, Wicca, Hinduism and Buddhism.

-Wears pins, stickers or anything else that contains these various phrases: "I'm so gothic, I'm dead", "woe is me", "I'm a goth".

-Claims to be a goth.

If five or more of these apply to your child, please intervene immediately. The gothic culture is dangerous and Satan thrives within it. If any of these problems persist, enlist your child into your local mental health center.

Any of you come from families full of oddities? Ever watch the Addams Family and feel reminded of your own? I do.

My mom was a sort of proto-goth back in the mid 60s. When her friends were wearing flowers and vairous hippy accutrements, my mom came to hight school in a cape and a black leather skirt and boots. Frequently. And she still gets pissed if you call her a hippy. "I'm a freak, not a hippy!" she'll say. Loooooooved the Velvet Underground . She used to sing "I'll Be Your Mirror" (and if she was in a jauntier mood, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer") to my brother and me as lullabyes and read to us from Voltaire (the French one, of course) and Kurt Vonnegut for bedtime stories. While my friend's mothers were all listening to the Beach Boys, my mom played the Ramones and the Pistols.

I was, even separate from my mom's influence, a pretty gothy lil kid, too. I remember, when I was quite young, the first time I saw The Avengers and I thought how lovely it would be to have the leather-clad Emma Peel do some sexy martial arts moves on me. Or Julie Newmarrrrrrr. Or both!! And I got a most unchildlike thrill when I saw the blue-skinned mechanical woman crushed the gullible sultan in The Thief of Baghdad. I raised some eyebrows in 8th grade when I turned in a book report on Cities of the Interior. When Siouxsie and Bauhaus and such came out, I went crazy and just ate it up. And I was wearing a black trenchcoat long before it was the official uniform of the disenfranchized loner teen geek. I don't know that is something to brag about, but true none the less.

Now, my daughter (recently turned 3 years old) is even gothier still. She plays dead. She pretends to breastfeed a stuffed bat. She sits in the bath splashing around singing, "blood, blooooood bloood!" Recently, looking at "What is Goth" (by the other Voltaire) she said, "Spooky boys, spooky boys. So pretty." She offered me make-believe "skull eggs." I asked if she knew what a skull was, thinking maybe she meant 'scrambled eggs'. She said, "you know, a head bone." She dresses like a princess whenever possible. Not rare for a little girl, I know, but she dresses like a Princess and then pretends to boil her fisher-price figurines in pots, or burn them with lasers. She loves graveyards as much as I do, and always tries to steal the flowers. She likes to put cloth draped over her head, kinda like the virgin mary. She goes around with this forlorn face saying, "I am a lady. I am sad." In fact, she often make-believes that she is terribly depressed.

So..I'm thinking there is a pattern here, non? How about all y'all? Gothy parents? Gothy kids?

I have figured out what they are. They're lyrics to unreleased Cocteau Twins songs. It's been rumored for some time that Elizabeth Fraser was a bit mental. I think she's skipped beyond music and focused on dadaist emails instead.

It's not really such a leap from "Whoever comes clean or a hullaballoo/For whip-stitching/Please won't you fly?" to "Here's the pink of twice. Make five a hard way. Up the sweeper, my fruit."

It's Your Choice

What am I?...Who am I?...
Am I merely a shadow that walks through the twilight of time?
Do I feel pain? Do I feel happiness?
It seems all I ever do is wait.
I wait for the darkness to consume me.
And I wait to be cast out into the empty abyss.
I wonder if maybe I once roamed free.
Free of these troubles, and free of this impassive feeling deep inside me.
But am I the shadow of what I was?
Or maybe, I am simply the shadow of what you might become.

My daughter is 14 and I thought this was great. But I was wondering what others thought. She told me her mindset was of a person who had committed suicide and these thoughts go out from that spirit to someone who had not but was likeminded.

And just to let everyone know. No, my daughter is not suicidal. Just comfortable expressing alternate viewpoints.

You would not believe how many girls I saw on Paris dressed as goths". But the point was when my mom told me, "Okey honey, I hope you are happy, you are dressing as it is trendy in France". I don't know if Paris has a big goth scene or not (never been there), or if the friend was exaggerating. But at this point of my life, I thought my mother would know I don't dress as a NeoVictorian lady just because "now it's trendy". Besides, how am I supposed to know what is trendy these days among the French youth?

I really do not run into over 40 people who do not know what goth is, however, I do run into quite a few younger people who are completely clueless, they think buying from Hot Topics is goth, it is not, goth is never mainstream, it is underground and its expression is unique to each goth. Plus there are many types of goth, I'm a traditional goth, into medieval culture and symbolism. There are some who think goth is a religion, it is not, you can have Christian goths and run the gamut all the way to satanic goths. The one unifying thing I believe we all share is finding beauty in the darker aspects of life. Anyway, I'm hoping to meet some other elder goths here to commune with, where I live in vanilla land anyone different is shunned at best. I fit the bill since I'm not only goth but bi-femme and don't hide it. I don't broadcast it either. I'm stuck here but am trying to find a group on the internet I can call home.

Dir. Matthew Barney
US Cremaster 1 (1996; 40m) is the beginning of Barney's innovative series. The film is set in a football stadium where the musical extravaganzas of Busby Berkeley are parodied. Chorus girls forming outlines of reproductive organs and blimps creating anatomical diagrams are among the stunning visuals.

Cremaster 2 (1999; 79m) is a gothic Western, of sorts, premised loosely on the story of Gary Gilmore, who was executed in Utah for murder. Gilmore's biography is conveyed through a series of fantastic sequences including a séance and a prison rodeo.

I find that most people are surprised when they find out I'm a Goth, because a) 'Goths are all supposed to be white'; b) 'Goths listen to that horrible music and you don't (apparently most people aren't familiar with Chopin, Saint-Saens, Mussorsky, Verdi, and Puccini, all of whome can be very ethereal or Goth)'; c) you listen to jazz and blues and Country (uh-huh. I listen to Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Sr., Duke Ellington, and Bessie Smith, among others- they all made music about pain and despair at various points of their career)'; d) you don't wear weird clothes (no- I just own more black than the average person, even in New York, and I don't feel like I have to dress up constantly, since the last time I did a guy followed me for blocks and asked me to dominate him)'.
Let's face it. I'm in my 40s. I always admired jazz musicians, who wore suits and ties and elegant dresses as they got older. I'd feel silly wearing a dog collar and running into one of my students. And as a woman living alone, I really don't need to attract any more attention to myself than I already get. For me, Goth has never been about looking cheesy. Other than a small collection of small skulls in my bedroom and the plush bats hanging from the ceiling of my home office, most people would never guess that I'm Goth, which is fine by me- in my mind it shows a lack of imagination. However, when I mention that I am, I get odd looks from people my own age, as if I said that I hang around high schools and wear Marilyn Manson t-shirts. Or even worse, they want to 'see' me wear or do something 'Goth' (what am I? An amusement?), as if I have to prove that I really am one. does anyone else have a similar issue? I have the same problem with being queer, also- people assume I'm in the closet or that I'm straight because I'm not constantly wearing rainbow flags, even though I'm out to my students and have had trouble because of it (being bisexual seems to be worse than being straight-up lesbian, it seems).

I have a 14 yo daughter who I have a great relationship with. She is definately moving into goth territory. Actually she is already there to a mild degree. Not something I discourage. I actually encourage it because I believe she is intelligent and do not want her growing up with narrow mindedness. Both of us are actively involved in a gaming group that plays White Wolf's World of Darkness games. For those of you who do not know of this we play a Werewolf and Vampire on weekends as well as some of the other venues. She is also involved in D&D games 2x's a week. I don't , mainly due to other requirements to my time. We also Belly Dance together. So anyway. here is where I would like advise. Now that she's definately moving into a more mature teen world she's begun wearing more makeup etc such as heavy eyeliner. The thing i'm concerned with is that as she moves into a more goth oriented world it seems that she's narrowing her outlook to exclude other forms of things. How do I encourage her in her look and tastes yet still guide her not to narrow her field of experience?

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm a Casting Producer with ABC Television and we're looking for
great families who love to stand out from the crowd, families who do
not conform to society's standards of "normal." We're looking for
families who perform in punk or goth bands, families who own
hearses, families who own and operate haunted houses, families who
love the gothic style, families who are interested in vampire
culture, etc. – basically families with any unique or unusual
interest! We're looking for those fun, over-the-top characters who
live “unconventional” lifestyles - families who aren't afraid to be
different.

We're currently casting for ABC's hit family show, 'Wife Swap!'
Please don't be confused by the title - "Wife Swap" is a **family**
show on ABC primetime. The premise is simple: two moms from two very
different families get the opportunity to swap lives (but not
bedrooms - everyone has their own!) for a week to experience what
it's like to live a different lifestyle - and to see what they can
teach each other about their own! In this case we're looking to
feature head-strong families with unique interests and hobbies - and
all the fun that goes along with it. I would greatly appreciate you
forwarding my information on to any of your family members, friends,
and associates who might be interested in sharing their lives with
us for a week!

All featured families will receive a **$20,000** financial
honorarium - and **$1000** goes to anyone who refers a family that
makes it on the show! We are looking for two parent families with
children (between the ages of 5 and 18) who are ready for adventure!
I appreciate your assistance in reaching out to these great families
and look forward to hearing from you soon!

Best,

I'm looking at old photos of my family from the 60s and 70s. Everyone is wearing those happy shiny clothes that were so popular. There's Mom in a perky dress she made on the sewing machine, her wig perfectly perched under a green scarf. There's Dad in a leisure suit, brown, with one of those muddy-looking patterned shirts that were so popular. He's even wearing a medallion. There's a picture of all of our friends and their children, smiling like they'll die if they don't, not caring that they aren't all wearing braces or lack perfect bodies, but they look healthier and happier than most children I see now.

And then there's me.

I'm the one not smiling. At all. In any picture. And in every picture where I was old enough to pick my clothing, it's in the darkest color available.

"You were always moody", my mom says as she sorts through pictures and exclaims at the hair, clothes and furnishings.

The last one is of me alone, circa 1977. I'm wearing a striped rayon shirt and have an afro that would notw be large enough to label me a hippie, although it's small by the standards of the day. I'm not wearing any makeup. I look straight at the camera, using my eyes like baleful laserbeams.

And the shirt? It's frickin' 1977, and I'm wearing a black shirt with thin gem colored stripes and dark jeans. I look like the world's most angry feminist, or like I'm about to take out a Dow Chemical plant after joining the Weathermen in hiding, or like I had just listened to Dark Side of the Moon for the 1,000th time while burning incense in my room and practicing spells that would allow me to see the Great God Pan (which is the most likely circumstance, because I did that on a regular basis).

My mother loves this picture. She giggles at how she tried to get me to smile, and couldn't.

Me? I see a beetle-browed chocolate version of Wednesday Addams about to lunge out of the picture like a liiving painting in a Harry Potter novel.

And as far as I know, Goth as a concept was still several years away.

Holy F**k, I think. I invented Goth.

Another member suggested creating this topic, so I thought I would take the plunge.

As it happens, I had cause to write about this very subject a while back. In my opinion, terms like "good" and "evil" are tossed around so frequently that a clear understanding of these terms seems to be lacking in public discourse.

"Good" and "evil" are not, in my opinion, accurate comparisons to make in discussions of morality. Good is a positive outcome, bad is a negative outcome. These two terms are the two dimensional, the black and the white concepts that describe an event or an action. Evil (yes, Evil with a capitol "E") isn't truly evil without the direction of malicious intent. Evil isn't bad, evil isn't a negative outcome. Evil is premeditated action intentionally taken to do physical or psychological harm to the world. It is a black hole, a hurricane that, left unchecked, can and will swallow everything in it's path. A lot of bad things seem evil, and a lot of evil things are taken to be simply "bad". They are not the same.

The term "good" is the most overused, and misconstrued, of these descriptions of morality. "Good" is a 5 course meal, a friendly kitten, a warm breeze. There are things that are more than "good", actions that rise above politeness, move beyond "cool" or "awesome". There are things people have done that go so far beyond "good" that they stand for decades, even centuries. Just the oposite of Evil, these acts are Righteous.

Easy stereotypes for a Righteous acts are Jesus, Ghandi, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King. But like Evil, Righteousness isn't personified in just one individual; it is an elemental force. If Evil is a black hole, Righteousness is the sun; if Evil is a force that crushes out all light and hope, Righteousness is a force that brings light and creates hope.

While good and bad are basic, animalistic instincts, (and we are animals), we are also intelligent, self-aware beings. The difference between good and Righteous, bad and Evil is in that intelligence, that self-awareness.

While many of them have the same problems as white suburban kids into Goth (their parents think they're devil worshippers; many of them don't seem to have proper supervision at night; they have an unfortunate taste in makeup), they also face racism, poor education, and the difficulty of living as weirdoes in violent neighborhoods where the different are often the first ones picked off. The good thing is that the kids mentioned in the article are pretty artistic and sweet. I just wonder how many of them will be alive 10 years from now. When these kids talk about death and morbidity, it's actually based in a reality, since the South Bronx is one of the most violent places in America.

In the SM world, there are fetishists, hardcore SM types, and people practice D/s. The fetishists are usually not into pain or power exchange They are only interested in their fetish, whether that be smelly feet, rubber skirts, women with tiny breasts, men in boots, or whatever. If they want to grovel, there's pretty much only one thing that will get them excited. They usually spend very little time talking to the rest of the community, and very often they don't perceive a larger community at all.
Hardcore types are serious about their play. They might or might not dress up, but they're into the mechanics of play. They might be into receiving or inflicting pain, or they might mix that up with heavy-duty bondage. Most of them are interseted in topping and bottoming, and if they do the Master and slave thing, they're often into long-term contracts. These are the lifers, who might look normal on the outside, but are very often into some heavy-duty stuff in their head and in life.
Then we have the D/s crowd, which is mostly straight and mostly about male tops and female bottoms. There might be pain, but for the most part, it's about playing slave games and 'dominating' people, usually in the bedroom. Sexy outfits might be worn and floggers might be used, but most of the people involved are not planning on coming out of the closet or marching for the rights of sexual perverts.
I'm thinking that Goth is like this also. You have people who are primarily fashion-oriented- everyone from the Marilyn Manson fan to the beautifully turned out goth chick in a corset. They might be heavily into tattooing, thin eyebrows, contacts, fangs, and all of that, and like some of the music too- but most of it is about dressing up and maybe shocking people. Then you have the artistic types who might be musicians, writers, and designers, who who might be the heavy-duty readers and culture vultures. These types are less interested in Goth music than they are in forming a personal aesthetic that might take cues from Goth-labeled fashion and style, and creating something that might or might not be seen as Goth by more mainstream types. Finally you get the people who are serious about Goth for a while, maybe even a long while, but it's primarily a phase that's linked to musical taste. As their tastes change they may 'grow out' of being Goth, until Goth music becomes nostalgia. They might buy a dog collar or two or rip up a pair of pantyhose, but they aren't necessarily going to cover themselves with tattoos, study black magic or dark spirituality, or buy every Bauhaus album ever made.
Given that these are generalizations, where do you fall?

Background: When I was 19, a great friend of mine shattered both his ankles and had a very long period where he was bed/house ridden. He lived in a small one room apartment in the tenderloin with only a bed, tv, and radio. My friends and I gathered branches from around the city and decorated his room with them. After work I would catch a bus to his place, light a bunch of candles, get stoned, and lie on the bed (which was on the floor) and listen to Enya. It was like a calm, warm, wonderous, enchanted forest.

Fast forward 16 years: My cousin and I are visiting Paris and I get a bug up my butt to hope the border and go into another country. The concierge suggested Brugge, Belgium- some of the oldest known architecture in the country. We take the train and find ourselves wandering through an amazing midevil town with churches around every corner. We found this one, The Church of Our Lady, that was a towering brick building. We decided to go in. Now, most churches in Europe are dark because of the colored stained glass windows. This particular church was brilliantly white inside because it had regular windows- not the dark stained glass. They had tapestries and artwork on every serface imaginable and huge white marble staues, and TREEES! Yep, trees all over the place. So I am standing in the middle of this old, kinda messed up church, with all this artwork around me, and trees, and my breath showing in the air because it was so cold, and I take a moment to listen to the music... they were playing ENYA... no kidding! Somehow the beauty of the place, the music, the trees, and everything took me back to those enchanting days in a little room in the tenderloin in SF. I actually started to cry. My cousin came up to me, asked me what was wrong, and I just smiled at him, and told him it was just so beautiful. He looked around and I saw that he had teared up a bit too. *sigh*

It was quite a moment.
