Tentation is a cool new club in Newport Beach. The decor, the lighting, the sound, the video projections, the floor plan – it’s all just right and so easygoing. The people are really cool, and that includes the employees. Everyone who works there is friendly and that helps make the vibe so great. Most of all, though, people are there for the music and to dance. I highly recommend it.
"Cool, smooth and funky. Pure artistry." - Kumar

"Smooth as silk." - DC of the DJ duo S&Him

On this week's show, I will be airing an interview with Desyn, along with Disc 1 of his recent release for the highly-respected Balance series. Desyn is truly a master and you will not regret making arrangements in your schedule to hear this mix.

Desyn is one of the very few DJ's who has caught the ear of some of the world's best-known DJ's, with Deep Dish, Sander K and Danny Howells nominating him as their "future DJ Hero" in DJ Magazine's Top 100 poll. With many established DJ's and newcomer DJ's leaning towards a particular style and musical range, many are pigeonholed into a genre of music. Desyn, however, has managed to establish his own sound that crosses boundaries and makes it difficult to categorize.

Desyn incorporates house classics, deep, tech, funky and progressive into his sets. "I listen and take inspiration from almost any type of music. Many tracks I find may not be instantly playable, so I use technology such as Pro Tools and Ableton Live to re-edit or update them so they will then fit into my vision of how the music will sound on the dance floor."

Desyn's love of house music began in 1989. Born and raised in London, he was exposed to the acid house movement at the age of 16 and was a regular at the legendary spiral tribe and traveller raves around the UK at that time. His DJ career all began with a mix CD that he took a considerable amount of time and love preparing. He sent the CD to 100 people who requested it from posts that he put on various Internet message boards. After a few months, the CD had been passed all around the world and ended up in the laps of various promoters and DJ's. The mix made such an impression that Desyn, although completely unknown at the time, began to receive international gig requests. From his first international gigs in Helsinki and Tampara in 2000, to his chaotic schedule today, it was all sparked from that one mix CD.

Steve Porter // Mike Hiratzka - Nov 24

Steve Porter [exclusive interview]

www.djsteveporter.com

The next generation of electronic music producers gaining hold and leading the charge is DJ/production phenom Steve Porter. His prolific productions have garnered international attention and are propelling him into being America's future DJ-cum-producer star. He is now poised for his official coming out party with his debut artist album Homegrown on FDS Recordings.

Homegrown is an amalgam of Steve Porter's various unique styles and melodic nuances. The expertly mixed album brings together 14 original tracks, some of which have already garnered wide attention with inclusion of the tracks on numerous high-profile dance music labels & compilations including "Vodka Cranberries" on hot new label Nu Republic, "Definite Form" on Sander Kleinenberg's Little Mountain Records and included on his recent Everybody CD for Renaissance, and most recently, the track “Swanky”, which was included on über-cool Felix da Housecat's Playboy: The Mansion compilation.

From Boston to New York, Steve Porter has evolved from record store clerk, mobile DJ to New England rave DJ to landing on the roster at one of the most prestigious booking agencies in the world. Steve Porter was discovered by Chris Fortier when Chris heard a CDR of his productions in 1999. Chris quickly brought him into the FADE Records fold. Soon thereafter, Steve was signed as the youngest member to join The Collective Agency; home to Sasha, U.N.K.L.E., Lee Burridge and James Zabiela. He began touring across the U.S., Canada, South America, Australia, Asia and Europe and has played alongside Sasha on the Airdrawndagger & Involver North American tours, Sander Kleinenberg on the Essential Mix Tour and also headlining a hectic schedule of national and international DJ dates.

========================================

Mike Hiratzka [live mix/chat]

Mike Hiratzka is a man on the move in the dance music industry. Having spent seven years behind the decks in clubs and six years at the mixing desk in the studio, Mike has developed the skills to be a serious player in the progressive music scene. He has DJed across North and South America at top venues including 1015 Folsom, Circus, Crobar and Space, and has a reputation for tight, driving sets that showcase a variety of styles on the cutting edge. Progressive, house, techno and breakbeat all share the same sonic landscape when Mike is at the wheels, seamlessly woven into unique sets that are at once melodic yet psychedelic, banging yet ethereal. He has showcased his talents on two mix compilations: World in Progress on CMYK Records (2001) and Altered States Vol 2 for Bliss Productions (2001).

Mike brings the same diverse ethic to his studio production, having turned out numerous tracks in various styles. He began his production work as an engineer and co-producer on many breakbeat tracks, and several years ago began focusing on his own music. Mike's works, both solo and collaborative, have received support from many of the top DJs in the world, including John Digweed, Nick Warren, Sander Kleinenberg, Jimmy Van M, Cass, Jerry Bonham, Max Graham, Christopher Lawrence, and Lee Burridge, to name a few.

Recently, Mike and his new studio partner Kazell (one of Spundae's resident DJs) were offered the opportunity to remix legendary pop artist Sinead O'Connor, a sure sign of great things to come in the near future. Mike is currently working on his debut artist album, while at the same time completing numerous collaborations with artists including Medway (Hooj Choons, Saw Recordings), Boyd Westerman (Fluid Recordings, Vortex Records), Mark Hunt (Spundae Recordings, Viscous Disc), Justin Scott Dixon (aka Voyager, Coded Records) and longtime studio partner Jim Ramer (Audio Therapy, Vortex Records).

Live Mix and Conversation with S & Him

http://www.electromusicology.com/images/s_him.jpg

"If we had a mission statement, it would be
To Make the Dance Floor a Wild Orgy of Sweaty Bodies."
-- S &Him

S & Him move fast, spin relentlessly and carry a set of big decks. In a world where everything sounds the same, this orgasmic duo of bleeps and beats takes the mold, shreds it thinner than grated parmesan and then smokes it. Dance floors love the energy that exudes from the fingertips of these dedicated DJ's. Frantic, naked gatherings are the norm, as boundaries are shattered, stereotypes are laid to waste and bodies are pummeled to an extent that would inspire another Star Spangled Banner.

What makes them different from any other male/female electro duo, you may ask? Exactly. Not only are they one of a kind in their chosen genre, but they have evolved so fast it would make Darwin spin in his grave. From their humble beginnings at a little-known club in Long Beach, S & Him have spread out all over the country like a sick joke that has audiences begging for the punchline night after night. San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Cleveland and Columbus have all felt the ill effects of the end of an S & Him set. Withdrawal symptoms most commonly include The Jones for more of what they've brought to the tables: the steady evolution of a DJ tag team that's more substance than style.

With their love of house and the odd beeps of technology, it would only take time for Bep and Unix to develop a passion for playing Electro and Tech House. Each one of the duo has been playing on their own for a few years, but putting the power of their passion together on the decks is a night not to be forgotten. After laying waste to dance floors in their stomping grounds around LA, the Dynamic Duo is set to invade cities around the country. Beware, for listening to their sets has been known to cause unbridled fuxing on the dance floor.

S & Him will be giving away free stuff, including mix CD's, tickets to their upcoming events and maybe even delicious little morsels of chocolate. Tune in, call in and win free stuff. Then make fun of your friends for not believing you when you told them what an earth-shattering radio show ElectroMusicology is.

October 13th show: The Juan Maclean

www.thejuanmaclean.com

I'll be doing an interview with The Juan Maclean and airing it on my next show. For those who don't know, The Juan Maclean is touring with LCD Soundsystem this fall. From iTunes:

Prior to becoming one of the most significant acts on the DFA label, John Maclean was a member of electro-rock band "Six Finger Satellite". Initially, the band fit in with the remainder of the Sub Pop label roster, but after one EP, they took a sharp turn into herky-jerky post-punk that was inspired by Devo, Big Black and Suicide. By the time they went to record their final album, 1998's "Law of Ruins", Krautrock began to play a major role, and so did James Murphy (of LCD Soundsystem), who produced, engineered and mixed the sessions, in addition to running the band's live sound. When the band broke up, Maclean moved from New York to New Hampshire and undertook a drastic change in lifestyle, leaving the music scene altogether. Then, Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy, who were getting the DFA label off the ground, prompted Maclean to become interested in music again. Using the name "The Juan Maclean", he took the sound of his defunct band to the dance floor, retaining flashes of post-punk and 70's experimental electronics, while grafting bits of early Euro-disco, electro, Detroit techno and Chicago house. A handful of singles, including DFA highlights "You Can't Have It Both Ways" and "Give Me Every Little Thing", led to the album "Less Than Human", released in August 2005.

I'm working on getting an interview with Steve Lawler, to promote his album "Lights Out 3", coming out on Tuesday, Oct 4th, and his show at Avalon Hollywood on Saturday, October 8th. Simply Jeff may also be in the studio again, playing a mix and shootin' the breeze with me. I'll give an update when I have something definite.
