Fwd from Bex: Update Utah - Regional Contacts, Decompression and More.

Greetings Utah Burners -

Bex here, Regional Network Administrator for Burning Man. I write you
today with an update about Regional happenings in your area.

As many of you know, for several months we have had an open call out
seeking candidates for one or more new Regional Contacts to step forward
to represent the Utah community. We’d like to thank Dave23 for his years
of support and for continuing to help hold down the fort while we make
our way through the transition with you. THANK YOU Dave23!

We have posted an announcement several times to this list to let your
community know what it means to be a Regional Contact for Burning Man
and how to apply. We are preparing to start scheduling more interviews
with the newest candidates for the Utah Regional Contact position, and
want to let you know there is still time to apply.

Because Utah is such a vibrant and important Burning Man community, our
aim is to find the right formula for a team to take things to the
future, and the right combination of personalities and leadership skills
to create that team. Thus, although we have already met some great
candidates, we’d like to cast this net as wide as possible, so we would
very much like to hear from anyone who is interested in or has questions
about the role. (More details about the role and how to apply are
included at the end of this email.) Anyone from the area who has
attended Burning Man at least once is welcome to apply – we’d love to
hear from the broadest sample of folks possible. We are planning to
actually visit Salt Lake City in early October to conduct in-person
interviews; please get in touch before *October 5th* if you’d like to
apply for the role.

Once we’ve heard from this final wave of candidates, we will enter into
the next phase of the regional intake process, the Community Feedback
Loop. This is your opportunity to speak on behalf of local candidates
you’re familiar with and help have a voice in the decision about who
will ultimately be on your team of co-regionals. Because short
interviews can only tell us so much about a candidate, Burning Man takes
this part of the process very seriously and we want to hear from as many
Utah Burners as possible, so we can select the right Regional Contact(s)
who will best reflect the needs of all the members of your community.
Keep an eye on this list for the Feedback Loop.

WHAT IS A REGIONAL CONTACT’S ROLE?

As we have seen in other areas, we’re noting in the recent discussions
that there may be some confusion about what it means to be a Regional
Contact and what the role really entails, especially as regards events
like Decompressions and regional burns We’d like to take a moment to
clarify that the greatest part of the role of a Regional Contact is to
foster community, encourage social engagement between Burners
year-round, and to represent Burning Man locally. As Schedule A of the
Letter of Agreement (http://regionals.burningman.com/network_letter.html
)states, one of the responsibilities of a Regional Contact is to bring
the local community together at least once a year – but contrary to what
some believe, this role is not about throwing events, necessarily, and
RC’s are not thought of as “event producers.” This excerpt from the
Letter of Agreement explains one requirement of the role:

“ (Regional Contacts must) bring the local community together at least
once a year – Real life contact is vital part of creating and building
community. RCs are NOT required to plan big events or parties. Hosting a
simple gathering at a local coffee shop to share pictures and stories
is a highly effective community builder. However, if there are people in
the area who wish to put together larger events for the local community,
the RC’s affiliation and participation in the planning are encouraged.
Note that any event that wishes to be designated an “official” regional
gathering may be designated so only if the RC is actively involved --
especially when proceeds are gained from charging an admission price.
Funds from such events should be routed to benefit the local regional
community and the Burning Man community at large. For example, regional
groups sometimes use this money to seed future events and art projects,
fund server space for local websites, award local ticket scholarships,
and to make donations to the Black Rock Arts Foundation or the
Burning Man Regional Network Program. Currently, use of the name
“Burning Man,” “Decompression,” “Black Rock City” or “Flambé Lounge” in
association with a public event requires prior approval from Burning Man.”

As stated above, bringing people together face-to-face does not mean
producing an event or throwing a big party. Regional Contacts are often
a catalyst to helping such events happen, but they are not necessarily
themselves event promoters, nor are they expected to ensure the
production of either Decompression style events or multi-day camp-out
“burn” events. Truly, the only requirement regarding such events is that
if a local event of either of those types is being organized and the
Regional wishes for it to be promoted as an official Burning Man event
and receive the support of the organization, the Regional Contact(s)
must vouch for the production’s adherence to the Ten Principles, its
legal and insured status, and that any funds raised from the event will
be applied only to the good of the community at large, rather than just
to one project or group.

The community meeting that your group had recently counts as one example
of ‘bringing people together’ that isn’t necessarily related to a party
or event. Although celebration is no doubt one of the most fun parts of
organizing a local community, it isn’t what we mean for Regional
Contacts to be responsible for – but we do want to offer mechanisms of
support for such events that are a natural outgrowth of a local
community. Other ways to bring people together that meet the criteria
are meet and greets, picnics, slide shows, civic clean up projects, etc.
– and we’re interested in nurturing the proliferation of all such types
of events – not just parties – and in Regional Contacts who are also
interested in those expanded types of connectivity beyond celebratory
social events.

YOUR LOCAL DECOMPRESSION EVENT

Although we have just stated that parties aren’t the main purpose for
having Regional Contacts, we are still very supportive of the notion of
local celebration and Decompression gatherings. We understand there is
momentum to create such a Decompression for the Utah community, and
although Utah is currently without active official representation as a
Regional Contact, we would like to find a way to extend your group the
right to call an event a Burning Man Decompression, and support you
however we can with this event.

We have been in communication with six people (who have all applied with
their interest in the Regional Contact role) to discuss the
possibilities and guidelines that must be met in order to hold an
official Decompression event in Utah. We are working with this group of
volunteers and helping them gain access to the information needed so
that this event may happen and obtain official Regional status. If all
requirements are met, we will endeavor to enter into a one-time legal
agreement with a representative from that group to license use of the
trademarks associated with official Decompression events, until such
time as your official local representation is in place.

We are very pleased to see that the Utah community is coming together to
communicate and overcome some of the recent challenges it has faced. We
encourage you all to continue communicating and meeting in person where
possible, and to work together to help support the upcoming
Decompression event.

The Utah community is notably large, diverse and creative, and the roots
of the events you do together and your connection to one another dates
back many, many years. We look forward to speaking with the various
leaders and players within your community to find the Regional Contact
team that will best function to support and nurture the Burning Man
community in Utah to the next level.

For questions, comments or to apply to be Regional Contact, please get
in touch via: regionals@burningman.com

Cheers,
Bex

Regional Contact Leadership Criteria and Expectations

There are some basic skills that you need to have for this role – you
must be computer literate, of course, and a good communicator with both
spoken and the written word. But there’s much more to the role than nuts
and bolts.

A Regional Contact must have leadership skills and be committed to
collaboration. Have you worked in a group before? Managed a team or a
project? It is important that RC’s be enthusiastic about working with
and organizing people. This role is, at its very core, about
collaborating with others. You must be the sort of person who is
committed to collaboration – with co-regionals, with the participants in
your area, and with regionals across the network and those in
geographically adjacent areas. Sometimes, it’s important to view
leadership as “followership”.

In many cases, especially as the Network grows, and particularly in
urban areas, we’re asking Regionals to come aboard as members of a team
of co-regionals. Our process for selection of these teams represents a
very studied formula to create a balance of personality types, of
thinkers and do-ers, of diverse segments of a community, and a range of
leadership qualities. You may not end up working with your “best
friends” in this role – our “chemistry equation” may put you in a team
with people you have never met and put you in contact with members of
very divergent local sub-communities. Even if you are the sole regional
contact in a smaller area, a dedication to collaboration with a diverse
variety of people and viewpoints is the only way you will meet success
in this role.

As in any other situation where people work together, it’s not always
easy, and challenges can arise. Most Regional Contacts would agree that
sometimes one may be put into challenging situations requiring one to
help facilitate your community through a problem or issue. More and more
often, we look for Regional Contacts who posses the skills to be able to
help mediate and facilitate in such situations virtually or in person. A
cool head and a nondefensive attitude are integral tools to this role –
one must keep them about oneself at all times, especially when things
get rocky. Being able to remain impartial to situations and conflicts
that might involve friends or peers is important. A good Regional
Contact needs to be able to see the big picture and to help the others
to do the same or to feel heard and find resolution. A Regional Contact
will often be called upon to use active listening skills, and must be
able to make everyone feel heard.

As a community leader, we specifically look for individuals who can
speak about Burning Man culture and values, and do so in a way that
inspires people towards shared vision. A good Regional Contact should be
able to help a community consider a local regional mission. This always
helps in moving and motivating a community towards projects beyond
celebrations.

Being active in a local community and civic minded is another quality we
appreciate. It’s great to want to produce the next big Regional event,
but there is so much more that can be done to help bring people together
and share the Burning Man spirit and ethos in the world. We seek to work
with Regional Contacts who have an interest in bringing local burners
together to engage in social or civic projects that benefit the local
community, for example – the sort of interaction that reaches far beyond
parties or events. Indeed, a regional does not need to attend every
party or event in their area, but he or she should maintain an active
awareness of the local social climate, nonetheless.

Being open to new ideas and concepts is another important quality. RC’s
need to be able to listen to and hear information from various sources
and to be open to working with the people or concepts present. Let’s not
forget that Radical Inclusion is one of the 10 Principles, at the
forefront of being a Regional Contact. Sometimes one will need to put
personal preferences or opinions aside and help to do the right thing
for the community. Remember, being an RC isn’t about you, it’s about
community.

Other skills that are important to this role include good written and
communications skills, an enthusiasm for working with people; an ability
to articulate the values of Burning Man, and to offer insight and
interpretation of how the “Ten Principles” and other Burning Man ethics
can apply to the local community and the world around us.

This is not an all inclusive list of qualities we look for in Regional
Contacts but hopefully this does the job of giving you a bit more info
and understanding of the role. If you have other questions, feel free to
get in touch with us via regionals@burningman.com

My application to be a Regional Contact

I saw that Terra had already put a note out about her application to be a Regional Contact, so I pulled my (announce yourself here) topic and am starting over.

Here's my info, for those who don't know me, or know why I'm applying for the BM Regional Contact position

My name is Chris Cline, and I've been a burner since 1999. I've attended Burning Man most years since '99, missing only 2006 and 2008. My first Utah Burn was Synorgy in 2000, and I think I've only missed one since then (the year of the burning bunny). In "real life" I'm a gov't scientist. The thing that flipped my switch about Burning Man was that it completely redefined "art" for me, but more importantly that it turned me onto the fact that I can practice art without having to define or measure myself as an artist.

While my visits to the playa have changed my life in a lot of ways, I think that my involvement with the people here in Utah are what it's really all about. With them (i.e., YOU ALL!) I have gotten to create an EL-wire blue heron with a 16'ft wingspan attached to a bicycle-pulled cart (we served margaritas), and have gotten to help with bigger "community" projects such as Club Delicious (at E-11 in 2004) and the Beyond the Zion Curtain Village (at Burning Man in 2005). I was also a part of the group of people who formed the AMO tribe, and through that experience, started getting more involved in trying to help groups of people define and work within their own definitions of "community." This involved facilitating meetings, which is also something that I do for work-- and I have to say that what I've learned as a burner has been as much of a benefit to what I do for a living as vice-versa.

Also, although I've been involved with a few groups of burners, and have met many many other people both as individuals and as members of other groups & tribes, I understand that there is no "main" group within the community that is any more or less important than any other group. We ALL rock, and I think that's the thing that really spins the wheel at the Utah Burn-- in general there is an openness and acceptance that propagates even more openness and acceptance, and I think that's the "freedom" that so many people experience at the Utah Burn. In my experience, anyway (your mileage may vary ;- ).

My view of "what is a Regional Burn" in Utah is that it has always been a community creation, both reflecting and requiring what WE bring to it. In that way, it's very different than Black Rock City's Burning Man, which is produced by a distinct entity. We ARE the community that Burning Man talks about. My view of Utah's Regional Burn festival (be it called SynOrgy, Element 11, or Bob) is that its infrastructure-- provided by the volunteers who sell and keep track of tickets, set up the roads, put up the tents, organize the rangers, coordinate the theme camps, etc-- is a "Vessel" where we all come in and pour our creativity and experience the resulting... magic. When "we" all fit on a schoolbus, it was easy to keep track of this chaos festival, but as we've grown to groups of groups, and groups within groups, it's much harder.

The issues that spurred me to finally take this step were that I saw that we needed better communication to, and between these groups-- more notification about what's going on, and more opportunities for people to participate (made easier to access by knowing what's going on). While the "drama" that we have been going through has been painful for all, I think it's also been helpful in that it's turned up even more ways and places where communication has fallen short-- for example, a group of people who were one of the theme camps at this year's E-11 who weren't even aware that there was a Utah Burners Yahoo List (now named Element 11), and maybe still don't even know that this tribe exists. Also the issue of all-ages events vs. age-restricted events. I think its also become apparent that "what E-11 is" is different things to different people. What we "can" do is always going to be constrained by the "real world"-- it's always out there. But it doesn't need to be constrained by "what we've always done." That would be my main goal as a Regional Contact-- to help improve this communication, both in terms of letting people know what's going on, and giving us all better opportunities to participate.

So, there ya have it-- that's what I'm here for.

thanks for reading-
Chris

Filling the ranks...a bit of a debate point and also election propaganda

Hey All,

Just throwing a tidbit out there to encourage any and all to apply for RC. As it stands right now, I think we're up to 7! based upon the yahoo group post earlier today. WOWEE! and YAY! I know I haven't had the nicest of things to say in the past, but I think this is truly a step in the right direction. I'm of the opinion that when forced to work together with many opinions, we will come up with a synergistic result....in other words, we'll have something bigger and better and even more amazing than before.

As I told Phoenix just today, "I know for me, it is all about getting the volunteers, treating them right while working with them, and making sure they know the gratitude that I/we have for them....I swear, I won't call anyone a 'hall monitor' unless they want me to :P

Second on my list is working to accomadate and include everyone....I've been kind of mixed up about that over the past couple of years, but I've got a clearer picture now that YES we need to include everyone, age 0-infinity, GLBT or straight....yeah, the pride weekend thing that I was initially all "who gives a shit" about has actually become an interesting cause for me. " And I don't necessarily want "June Cleaver" but I do want to see civility and respect when it comes to dealing with volunteer groups.

For those of you who don't know, prior to my relocation to the SLC (and goodness knows I love this place and am proud as heck to call it home), I was in SW Wyoming, in the middle of butt-fucked nowhere. I made it to 4 E11s (well, technically, 1 synorgy, 1 utahburn, and 2 E11s) and 2 BMs in that time. I was working very heavily with the BmORG to get a regional started in Wyoming. It never quite happened, but I learned a lot in the process. BmORG policy has definitely changed over the years and continues to evolve as we speak. We definitely need people at the helm to work with the BmORG and make it all happen and have their backing. It is rarely seen, primarily because we are such a talented bunch at our own problem solving, but they do have amazing and powerful backing to offer.

There are many who will argue that BmORG has no business in what we do and/or no business in the counterculture. I pose it as this, if it were not for the insight of those within BmORG, would we have a regional event as amazing as E11? Would Burning Man as we know it today even exist? Burning Man has undergone so much change its downright scary! I know when I first learned of the event in '94 it was just a tiny gathering of 2,000ish, and as far as I was concerned it was a raver baby's delight! As things continue to evolve and grow, its is expectant that they will have to assume a higher level of responsibility. Even with my time in E11, it has gone from 300 to nearly 1000 people....its time to evolve, its time to put ourselves on the radar and be proud of who we are. Even with the messed up laws of Utah, we have the perfect breeding ground for change, enlightenment, and education! or at least to create a microcosm of who we are. Micorcosms are dangerous as evidenced by the influx of new Law Enforcement at this years Burning Man, but it can establish a precedent. After Wednesday at the event, things seemed to be back on course.

There is so much diversity and beauty within this community that I can't help but think it can accomplish great things. However, we always have to remember that we have to WORK for these things. Its never easy to overthrow a system, as evidenced by the recent "repossession" of our events. We all must work, educate, and occasionally (or always) get creative. We're a smart bunch and I'm proud to say I'm a part of that bunch! I'm hoping in the year ahead that we'll continue to foster that creativity, diversity, and beauty.

I'm not sure what else to say. I'm so proud of us at this point, so proud of the collective community, and so proud of every individual and all they have done, that I am at a loss for words. The last few weeks have proven just how powerful, amazing, and creative we all are!

I am looking forward to the next "burn season" and can't wait to interface with you all, RC or not, I'm vowing NOW to work my ass off to make E11 '09 one for memory.

Lotsa Love,
Yahoo Email List: Current Situation and Options- Your Opinion Matters!

I was going to add this in with the Decomp update that I just posted, but I think it merits its own topic because I'm thinking there might be some varying opinions on this, and any decisions here will impact everyone.

So here's the situation:
The "Element 11" Yahoo list has been around since 2000'ish, and was started by one of the people who helped create the first Utah Regional Burns, then known as "SynOrgy." The names of both the event and the list have changed since then, and successive Regional Contacts have been named, and this person is no longer as directly involved in the creation of Utah Burn events as he once was. However, he is still the "list owner" and as such he has control over who has access to the list and what can be posted. This has never been an issue up until last week, when this person unilaterally shut down access to the list as his response to the "drama" he was seeing. While this may be understandable, it was also somewhat arbitrary and capricious. Since then it's also become apparent that the "moderator" right can also be removed unannounced, at this person's whim or pleasure.

To me, all of this is fine-- it's his list. However, it seems more sensible to me that a list whose purpose is communication among the Utah burning man community (and yeah, I know that there's a lot of debate about what the heck that is right now) should be managed by people who are active in the community, with the ownership of the list turned over to whoever is representing the community at the time.

So, what we (the Regional Contact Candidates) have been talking about is creating a new list that is explicitly for the Utah Burning Man community, with the commitment that the list will be owned by whoever is the (or "a") current Burning Man Regional Contact. This IS confusing, given the proliferation of lists in the last week, I know. But we see this as a way to resolve an ownership situation that is operating currently, and could likely operate again in the future with some future "drama" in a future version of the community.

But, this decision also impacts you, the "community member" most directly, and in the spirit of better communication and less arbitrary decision-making, this is NOT a decision that should be made without input. A definite consensus may emerge, which we will do our best to follow, and if not, the breadth of opinion should help us make a better decision than just deciding based on what we happen to be seeing at the current moment.

*Also, as a side-note, I'm just posting this to Tribe at the moment because a) the members of this Tribe are a good subset of the larger Utah Burning Man community, and b) Tribe (when it's up, which it seems to be OK at right now...) provides a good format for this kind of discussion.

So here goes-- what is your choice:
1) Keep the old list (element11@yahoogroups.com) and see if we can resolve the ownership and access issues*
(* if this is your choice, let us know what your second choice would be if we can't resolve these issues)

-or- Go with one of the new lists that have cropped up in the last week:

2) the "new" Element 11 list: element11_utah@yahoogroups.com
*started by one of the RC Candidates, but little-used at this point

3) the new Element 11 "Google" List: e11-announce@googlegroups. com
*this is an announcement-only list, started by Raziel, also litle-used

4) a new "UtahBurners" List UtahBurners@yahoogroups.com

I just set up the "UtahBurners" list, and at this moment it's only a placeholder. However, the name is intentional: the purpose of the group is to be a communication vehicle for Utah Burners year-round, not just to discuss a particular event, or things that are produced by a certain group of people. It is also my intention that the List Owner will be a Burning Man Regional Contact, or some other person who is in the role of coordinating or facilitating communication within the larger community about various activities that promote, or are in tune with "the Burner Vibe." When that role changes hands, so too will this list.

Thanks to EVERYONE for your patience and continued participation!

Since I can't post this to the yahoo group, I'm posting it here. I just needed to say it. That is all.

quoting kallisti_dawn <kallisti_dawn@yahoo.com>:
There are no funds upfront - we're starting from scratch here!

Can I just say that this statement makes me nauseous? Am I allowed that HERE?

Is there anywhere I can actually express my frustration and sadness at the elephants?
Does it matter that suddenly I don't feel like burners are: "my peeps"?
In a world where I can get drunk and stupid and nekkid 365 days a year if I want to; does
it even MATTER that I no longer feel there is anything for me (AND MY KIDS) at these
local "burn" events?

It is said that if we want it, we have to bring it... and our events are what we make
them... but what I want to bring isn't welcome, and what I want to offer is not wanted.
:-(

This is not the community I fell in love with 6 years ago (some of you I've "burned" with
even longer). I'm all for evolution, however as things "evolve" in this "burn" community
into what the community wants... so must I. I'm no longer having fun, I'm obviously NOT
doing it right.

I came to a fuller understanding of the 10 principles and of what MY american dream is
about this year at Burning Man. Apparently 3rd time's a charm.
I hold that near and dear.
That being said, I will no longer go to the local dry well for my water... or my 10
principles.
-Sad Phoenix aka: gypSAD la sal aka: Julie

PS: If there are any burner parent types that feel me on this one and would like to
create something "for us" (including a burner childcare co-op for genuine "adult" nights)
please message me off list.

What do YOU want to see at the Decompression? What do YOU want to bring?

Hey all-
As Wolf has posted, we had a community meeting on Sunday where we made a collective decision to have a Decompression Party that will be hosted, produced, managed, implemented, enjoyed, etc. *by* the community. It will be a fund-raiser for next year's E-11. It's also a 'starting from scratch" party-- meaning that the rules of this game are that we are starting with NO seed money. So, whatever happens there will be gifted-- from us, to us.

There were various ideas bandied about, but I think that some of them may be more due to "momentum" than due to what people actually want (i.e., "well, we've always done this", or "well, someone threw this idea out at some point in time and we're reluctant to abandon it"). Since there's no sense putting energy into things that no one is all that into, and doing so deprives energy from the things that people DO want to see, here's the question(s):

1) What things DO you want to see at the Decompression? Music (if so, what kind?)? Art? Fire? Dunking booths? T-shirt Stenciling stations? A Barter Bar? WHAT???

2) As the vital follow-up to Question number One-- what kind of energy do you want to bring to this party? Anyone can GO to a party, and it's always fun to see what other people have put their efforts into. But this party is totally DIY, and the "yourself" in this case is US. Also, just because you're "not an artist" or "not creative" (oh yeah??? wait until this group gets done with you, is all I can say!), that doesn't mean that you don't have the ability to contribute. The party is a "vessel" for creativity and social interaction, but it takes a LOT of work to BUILD that vessel and keep it upright. We need volunteers to spread the word, help at the door, help bartend, help manage and coordinate things, etc. Especially if you've got an idea of what you want to see, there is a much greater chance of it happening if you are willing to put your energy into it.

Spread the word that we are going to have this event (Saturday Oct. 25th, location TBA), and Lets Get This Ball Rolling!

thanks y'all!!

The Care and Feeding of Cups

Hmmm, since my Tarot card is the Queen of Cups I thought I'd take a shot at it.

Bring you own cup! What does this mean? A stack of throw away plastic cups to share? Nooooo....

It can be a sippy cup or a travel mug or a pewter flagon or a Halloween goblet or an enameled camping cup, or an Eiffel Tower monstrosity if you visited Vegas recently. Just not anything breakable! Slap a carbiner through the handle to hang on your belt or pack; throw a strap around it for the same if it has no handle. Hang it around your neck if it is small! A cup with a lid prevents anyone from messing with your beverage if that concerns you.

Mark your cup, either with a sharpie or stick an address label on it ... some type of ID so your cup may be reunited with you should it go astray.

What works for you?

Decompression Update- Sept. 28th

Hi All-
We are still shooting at a moving target on several of the basic items for the Decompression-- finalizing the venue, working out how we will sell tickets, etc., but I wanted to get a quick update out just to keep everyone in the loop. Constructive feedback is invited.

Here goes:

The Decompression date will be Saturday Oct 25th. Tickets will be $10 pre-purchase and $15 at the door. We will be selling them via PayPal, (which will add a $1 service fee for a total of $11), and then you will pick them up at will-call. You will need a valid ID to prove that you are you, and that you are over 21. Yes, this event is 21+ (but look for further in-town parties to have an all-ages pre-party-- Thank you Julie for that idea).

The venue has not been finalized but we are working on it. The venue we are looking at is a great place, but there is a complication in that another group had also talked with the space owners about having a show there that night. This group is a band that plays pretty darn good music, and we are talking with them about combining forces in a way that will work for everyone. If this works, we will have live music from about 10-12, and electronic music after that. I'll share more details about the band, etc. once we get this worked out.

We have gone back and forth about having a true Burning Man style bar (i.e., gift bar) and providing a bar and selling tickets. We decided to go with the latter, so drinks will be provided and purchased with drink tickets-- which will also be raffle tickets.

This will also be a Leave-No-Trace Event, and a "Bring Your Own Cup" event.

If you are interested in volunteering to work the Decompression (Setup, Gate, Greeters, Rangers, Cleanup), to show your art, or to perform (music, fire, poetry, plays, anything), please get in touch with the following people:

Setup, Cleanup ("DPW")- Wolf
Gate/Greeters- Bystander ("TicketMonster")
Art/Performance- Chris

If you have other ideas for how you want to participate, contact Nosler, who is the overall Volunteer Coordinator, and he will point you in the right direction.
xpost - Decompression Details / Meeting Update

Sunday's meeting had attendance of around 30-40 people and a lot of
good input. Key things of note:
There will be a Decompression party on Saturday October 25th. As in
past years, the decompression is a 21 and over event.

The location is to be determined. Rose Sachs has a very strict policy
- no fire. Therefore, the decision was made to seek out an alternate
location. Please send your suggestions.

Admission is $10 in advance, $15 at the door. This will be a
fundraiser for the community. There will be no comp tickets. Funds
generated will be held by the co-regional candidates in a new account
set up just for Element11 and related events (such as the
Decompression) . This account will have a minimum of two signatures
required on all transactions. An independent third party will be
responsible for bookkeeping.

The co-regional candidates (those who have put their hat in the ring
for RC) are Wolf, Nosler, Bystander, Chris Cline, and Spice. They will
act together as the organizing body for local events until BMorg makes
their final selection.

There are no funds upfront - we're starting from scratch here! The
big message in this is... Participate! ! If you want it there, you
better bring it! Which leads us to...

Volunteers will be needed for the following areas: ticketing, music,
art, performance (fashion show/fire/etc. ), refreshments, decoration
and venue setup, LNT, greeters, rangers, and other general help. Some
members of the community stepped up at the community meeting - if you
are among those, please be sure we have your contact information - if
you would like to volunteer please email kallisti_dawn@ yahoo.com.

Decompression will be BYOB and BYOC. Bring your own cup or you will go
thirsty. Spirits, brews, mixers, and yummy bar treats will be most
welcome. As always, this is a LNT event. Pick it up, pack it out,
don't leave it for "the family". (this ain't yo mammas house!)

That's everything. Expect another message once advanced ticket sales
are live and we have a solid location.
Can't wait to see this community gathered around the fire again - I
just wanna celebrate!

Pax, Ignus (Peace, Fire)

Hey folks as many of you may have noticed the Yahoo group is down because it was locked by the owner and we have a ton of info to pass on to everyone in the community.

For this reason the 5 folks that are candidates for co-regional have elected to start a new Yahoo group that is owned and will be able to be transferred to the folks in the future who are the regional contacts.

The new Yahoo is an announce only...commentary messages will be rejected in an effort to encourage those that have comments to bring them to the community meeting so that they can be solved in a reasonable manner and help the community solve the bigger problems together.

The link for this group is element11_utah-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Thanks hope to see you on the list and at our after burn party.

Re: Sunday's Community Meeting

I did not take detailed notes, but to throw out *something* to an anxious burn community, I will post the general gist and major decisions made in Sunday's community meeting here:

Decompression WILL happen. The date is set for October 25th, entry is tentatively set at $10 in advance and $15 at the door. There will be NO comp tickets. Volunteers will be needed for the following areas: ticketing, music, art, performance (fashion show/fire/etc.), refreshments, decoration and venue setup, LNT, greeters, rangers, and other general help. Who to contact for this will be arranged shortly... if you are especially anxious, you can contact one of the acting RC's...

The acting regional contacts (those who have put their hat in the ring for RC) are myself, Nosler, Bystander, Chris Cline, and Spice. We will act as co-regionals until BMorg makes their final selection. This and relevant events will be posted on a new announce-only list here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/element11_utah/

This list will be heavily moderated and will be for event announcements only. No drama, no discussions, no anything but event announcements, calls for volunteers, and other similar items of community interest.

Decompression will be BYOB and BYOC. Bring your own cup or you will go thirsty. Spirits, brews, mixers, and yummy bar treats will be most welcome. Venue and time of day for Decompression are TBA. Other details are also to be announced and will be available as soon as things are confirmed. And, as always, this is a LNT event. Pick it up, pack it out, don't leave it for "the family".

If you have any input, insight, questions, comments, or just want to cheer, feel free to do so here. Meeting info will be cross-posted to the old Yahoo group as soon as the list owner can be contacted to lift the post freeze he has placed on that list.

A new group has been created strictly for Element 11 announcements, meetings, parties and events. If you're here for the announcements and to be kept in the loop, but not all of the politics, drama, and otherwise, this is the place for you; a way to be kept in the loop without all the herkamajerk.

Discussion can roar on unhindered here and at the yahoo group, while those of you who are tired of a cluttered inbox can still be kept in the know.

To subscribe the new group, simply send a blank email to: e11-announce-subscribe@googlegroups.com

You can then send messages to the group about your parties, meetings, and events by sending an email to e11-announce@googlegroups.com

Thanks! See you there! Burn on!

Hi all!
I was so hoping to see all of your camps and visit! The sheer size of BRC this year made just visiting the camps I was sure of the location of, a daunting task! I guess I am getting old but the Playa seemed to go on for ever this year, it just plain wore me out trying to cover the distances, of course there was the dancing at each place I passed. I wish there could have been a directory published before hand of Utah camps. Maybe we could come up with something sooner next year?
I arrived on friday nite and had the 30'x50' kitchen up before the big wind... lucky. I wonder if anyone from Utah found the Black Rock City Canoe Club kitchen ( huge white unmarked building at 8:45 and esplanade?) We usually hide out somewhere diff each year, to feed new folks, and put the canoe out for our entrance and call sign. This year we hid right on the Esplanade and didn't put out any signs or the canoe... just let the smell of cooking pull people in! We setup last years 30x50' old kitchen right behind it for "and then there's only love's" Orgy Dome.
Some food highlights were Thanksgiving Thursday and Mahi Mahi Chowder nite from Fishmonger and of course my Orgasm Omelet Saturday am. I made chocolate and cream cheese filled crepes at 3 am right on the esplanade one night and got run over for the (second time) by a wasted women bike rider! The first time was a drunk girl, on a bike, in the critical tits ride, with no brakes and no depth perception! Still sore and bleeding from that one!
Any way it was a great success and we fed many many burners (Chakra made two hundred hot dogs one nite, at 3 A M)
I would love to hear that some of you made it in to our camp and I hope we can burn closer together next year!

"Left Behind"? Join us at the Burn Depot this Saturday- participants wanted!

Hi everyone-
Scotty Scrapmetal (the Pilot of the Solar Saucer that you may have seen around town) has offered up his studio space for a "Burners Left Behind" (or stayed behind!) gathering this Saturday night where we can add our vibrations to the ruckus that will be going on just west of us. This is a space that we can fill with music, dancing, costumes, art, fire and love. But, as with all creations, it needs a good helping of co-creators and participants. Here is a quick list of things that are needed-- if you have some time and inclination, come MAKE the fun!

Here's the list, see below for more details
1) Help with Cleanup, Setup, Effigy Building and Plant Planting-- Friday and Saturday
2) Got a line on a porta potty?
3) Fire, Art, Music-
4) Stocking/Staffing a bar
5) Staffing the Door, Donations and Cover Charge
6) Tell your good friends
7) After-party CLEAN UP!!

1) Scotty could use some help cleaning up and setting up. He could use help building the effigy (the wood is already down there) and planting some plants. If anyone has some good dirt, Scotty has a bunch of planter buckets that he would like to place around the courtyard.
If you want to help with clean-up, set-up and effigy building, show up Saturday morning ready to get dirty, push brooms, and move things around. (the address of the Burn Depot is 347 S. (or thereabouts) on 400W). If you have good dirt (aka topsoil that things will grow in), respond to this post and we can work out the logistics of getting it to the Depot.

2) Porta-Potty-- no, it's unlikely anyone has one of these sitting in their back yard that they can bring down. But if you want to handle the details of renting/delivering one, you will be performing an IMPORTANT public service!! (and the rental will be reimbursed from the door and donations-- see #5). Respond to this post if you want to take this on (or contact me or Scotty).

3) The party is going to be down stairs and out side, The saucer will be providing sound and action. Since it's us, you KNOW there's gonna be some good DJs and some great people. If you have art or other fruits of your creative juices that you'd like to display or contribute, that is PERFECT! As is (of course!) FIRE PERFORMANCE!. Bring it on!

4) There will be a donation bar, but that takes-- DONATIONS!! Ice, mixers, liquor. Cups would be nice too, but in the spirit of LEAVE-NO-TRACE, how 'bout bringing your own cup?? If you want to staff the bar (the next best job to working the door, or vice versa), or take over the job of making sure that there are a couple of people to work the bar (you and your friends?)- respond here.

5) People are needed to "person" the door, with the charge of asking for donations to pull this party off (see #2 above). $10/person is pretty darned reasonable (been to a downtown club lately?). If you want to help out at the door, shout out when you want to work. First shift at about 10PM

6) This is a late-blooming, word-of-mouth event. Tell your responsible friends.

7) It ain't over until the last dixie cup is gone. I'll be there to help with cleanup on Monday-- call me if you'd like to help make this event "go away" as quickly as it is springing up.

Questions/volunteerism-- post 'em here!

if you need a playa fix, there's a webcam setup on top of Center Camp that is apparently streaming video, along with (possibly) Burning Man Information Radio (BMIR).

the info I got was that you have to open it up in Quicktime, and the best way to do it is to go to the "File" menu, select "open", and then paste in this url:

rtsp://qtss.telascience.org/live.sdp

I'm still downloading Quicktime, so no guarantees. Your Mileage May Vary.

but it involves a lot less gas, and a LOT less dust!!

Burner Gathering in Liberty Park sunday Aug 31st - Xpost from E 11 email list.

Dear Sir & Madame,
We would like to invite, no, request your most honorable presence at the 6th annual Celestial Cacophony Celebration at the famed urban gathering place of suprenatural bueaty and populace...Libertin e Park, in the beating heart of Hatu. Art,Grilled Beast, Fruit & Foliage abounds! BYO Everything and see what there is to share! In the course of the last 6 years we have had lots of fun and many connections have been made.
We will, as always, burn a "thing" in the fireplace ...that means a "'some" thing or whatever you want it to be! WHEN: SUNDAY August 31, the year of ourselves 2008TIME: 3PM until they make us leave..which is about 11PmWHAT: SLAC-O-PHONY cacophonous home town burn art attack and grub fest......you may already be a member.WHERE: Liberty Park - The fire place/pinic area just northeast of the Drum Circle. Accessible to most via public transporation! WHY: Because it was the Cacophonus who BROUGHT IT to the playa in the first place!!COST: byo everything, no fees apply! And now gentle folk ,some light reading for those who yearn for knowledge about the beloved Burning Man...an exerpt from one of the original burners.. John Law Burning Man belongs to everyone. (read the whole thing at john's site, link below) ....Some of you know this history, some don't.In 1986, Jerry James cobbled together an 8 foot tall human figure and burned it on Baker Beach with Larry Harvey. They got the idea after they had attended Baker Beach Solstice bonfires & art soirees hosted by Mary Grauberger in the early 80's. Jerry James looked me and the Cacophony Society up in 1988 and asked for our help and by 1990 we were integrally involved in the Baker Beach party. The Baker Beach parties were beach bonfire parties with little planned "participation" other than attendees picking up a rope to help raise the figure before torching. I recall on the Solstice of 1990 (the last and by far biggest event at Baker Beach) that the entire music presentation consisted of one rock/jazz drum kit ably commanded by Dean Gustafson (god bless him!) Cacophony dubbed the events Burning Man in 1989.The Cacophony Society was conversant in organizing strange and intense events in dangerous and unusual locations. Once involved, Cacophony influence encouraged and inspired the event to attain much greater and more ambitious goals. The original event organizing at the Black Rock was easily 90% Cacophony members or alumni. My involvement was crucial to the survival.Kevin Evans and I were planning a Cacophony Society event in the Black Rock Desert for late summer 1990. Earlier in June of that year we all helped out with the Baker Beach party. The police came and would not allow us to burn the figure. A small hand full of us helped Jerry James deconstruct (literally – OK?) the figure of the man and stored it at a lot Jerry had secured.

I am afraid "They" (yes the powers that be now rule the Playa too!) may kick us all out at the gate as they say they will! What can I do? Does anyone have an extra early entry? will they let her camp at the gate? Will they crucify and burn us early? I think this is serious so serious answers would be helpful!
Come visit the Black Rock City Canoe Club at 9:00 and Esplanade for some Puddin Paddle Pastries or munchies and fun! This is a first for me .... being on the Esplanade and more than likely the last because I will never be out voted again! So come on by!

The rest of the Boise crew will be at Opulent again this year, so come and check the new flame effects built by Boises' biggest pyro fireman, Greg Briggs!

Update from The Playa

Hi Everyone - This was forwarded from a friend (James is a friend of a friend...) anyway, read on

FROM JAMES:
I've just returned from 3 days on teh playa,
and while my clothes go through the second wash cycle I wanted to
update everyone on a few things.

Firstt, for those bay area folks......
I-80 is under construction through Donner Summit. I don't know the
work schedule, but it doesn't look like they'll be finished by the
24th, let alone Labor Day. Plan some extra time on your trip. 447 Is
also getting resurfaced and presently has some one-way controls, but
they plan on finishing before the crowds.

Now, for everyone......
1) The desert is a stunning place. We sat at the temple site watching
the almost full moon rise on one side while the sunset threw shadows
on the clouds that would make Raphael weep. Last night the open playa
was lit in white moonlight out beyond the curvature of the earth,
making me stare in awe and choke on the beauty.

2) Or was I choking on dust? This is one of the dustiest year's I've
seen. The setup crews are doing a great job in creatively building the
city to minimize it and gate road is longer too, but be prepared for
lots and lots of dust. Echo's of Kate, but bring goggles, masks, and
other protective devices a-plenty. Also remember to bring lots of
Playa Foot supplies (vinegar, moisturizer, extra pairs of clean
socks!) and playa eye care (saline rinse) especially if you wear
contacts.

3) The playa is also very rough, with lots of moguls and ruts. This
means that we have to drive extra carefully this year and that art
cars and bike alike may have mobility challenges.

4) It's hot out there, as much as 5-10 degrees hotter on the playa
than in Gerlach. The set up crews are building us some great shade
structures, but it was already 80 degrees in the shade at the DPW
depot when I left at 10am today. So while your running out for dust
supplies pick up hydration devices and bring a couple of cans of
electrolyte powder (I personally like Gu2-O, but try whatever you buy
before coming to playa to make sure it agrees with your body and you
hydration system) Remember that dehydration is more than just water,
it's also getting appropriate nutrition so consider fortifying your
water.

On the good news side, set is going well and everything looks great.
The new station layouts give us plenty of room to work and the camps
have great social space without getting in the way of the active
station. The stations are also prominently on the corner, right across
from Rangers but away from the Arctic lines. The Man base and the
Temple are going to be stunning. All in all a great year to be a
burner. Can't wait to get back out there...

See you soon!

Hello my beautiful tribe.
I am doing a wedding fundraiser to pay for some of the costly wedding things such as deco, party rentals, clothing, etc.
For the next month I will be offering
1. My massage healing work @ $80. for 1 1/2 hours. $10. extra for outcalls.
Available Fri. through Sun.
2. I will be making raw crackers @ $5. a bag. A very healthy snack good by themselves or with spreads or cheeses.
3. I will be holding a bake sale making vegan chocolate cake and vegan cheesecakes. They will be made to order and sold @ $20. a cake. They are both very decadent and perfect for the vegan with a sweet tooth.
Please contact me here if you are interested and I will set you up.
Lots of love
STW

Veggie Roomies Wanted! Sept. !st

My two roomies are moving out at the end of this month, which as you all know is really bad timing, so I need to find one or two roomies to live here at least till the lease is up in mid/late Nov or I'm gonna be in deep s#!@.
It's a house with a pretty big back yard and a fence so it's pet friendly and a washer and dryer. There are three rooms. If I only find one rommate then we will both pay $550. and share the extra room(for storage, crafting etc). If I find two then the big room will be $400 a month and the small one will be $300.
I am a young female who is honest, fun and easy to get along with and I have one handsome dog named boogs. I would like to have a vegitairian (I'm sensitive to meat smells and "meat germs"), Perferably female, Roomie. Someone who is honest, reliable, trustworthy, repectfull, fairly clean, responsible and burner friendly.
If you have any questions or want to see the house just e-mail me and let me know I'll be happy to have you over to see the house and for us to get a feel for eachother to see if things will work out. silver_c_vegan2000@yahoo.com

Bobby and the build crew, the Fire Conclave, the Artists, the many people who gave by being a part of it all. Thank you so much - as we cleaned up the final remains from this year's Elephant Effigy (aka Ganesh aka the Effigent), everything came round - full circle... I had so many memorable, beautiful good times in the creation and experience of this year's event.

All that's out at sea base now is potential - the clean up is complete. Thanks to everyone from beginning to end (and here's to new beginnings!)

if you have room in your ride, for her, it would be great, I wont post her email here for obvious reasons but if you respond I will tell her .........she may need someone responsible to camp with I am not sure ( I am an oldie she would probably have more fun with someone younger and my camp has a pretty adult theme this year: read whore house lol) and if she doesn't I will take care of her so if she could just get there.)
thanx

All Your Seabase Are Belong To Us

Kudos to everyone who came out in these busy playa prep times! Seabase cleanup had a good turnout and was a resounding success (thank you, Messenger!) and there was lots of magnetism to be had amongst all the sexy burners out there... and we finished just in time to be treated with a summer rainshower and food. I would have stayed longer but, alas, my wee red car is still broken. :(

A note, then, for next year's event: We must get cleanup going much, much sooner...

No Rinse Hair Care - waterless

Has anyone tried this? http://www.rei.com/product/746096

It's certiainly not vegan or even veg friendly (note the ingredient 'urea' - which is to say animal urine - so there are definitely animal by-products and probably animal testing is an issue...)

But it is latex free and reduces water consumption.... (for me, the animal issues outweigh water consumption - looks like I'll be setting up an evaporation pool....)

Here's the product description:

Wash your hair without water? Put on the No Rinse shower cap as you normally would, lather up through the cap then towel dry; it's that easy!
* Keep your hair fresh and clean when water is in short supply—NASA astronauts use this No Rinse shampoo during space shuttle missions.
* Biodegradable, PH-balanced soap contains no alcohol; leaves hair with a clean, fresh fragrance and no residue
* Easy to use—just shake, apply directly to hair, massage until foaming lather covers hair, and towel dry thoroughly
* Can be heated in microwave to simulate a warm shower
* Latex-free and alcohol-free means no irritation, only cleanliness; one-time use

Ingredients: water, triethanolamine lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, cocamidopropyl betaine, steapyrium chloride, fragrance, diazolidinyl urea, methylparaben, propylparaben, citric acid.
Made in USA.

Seabase Cleanup Aug 9th at 10am

Everything is coordinated and in place for moop cleanup at Seabase on August 9th at 10am.

Come early if you want to see the sharks get fed.

Bring shovels (flat-edged are better), a few trash bags, drinking water, rakes, and good work gloves. It has been suggested that magnets from old speakers attached to rakes will work wonders for old nails!

Yes, there's a lot of moop out there, from this years and years past. Let's do the awesome thing and get it taken care of before we all head out to the playa.

All the cool kids are doing it! I will see you there...

Need a ride to BRC for my nephew!

My nephew can go to Burning Man this year ... his first and possibly last opportunity to go. He has wanted to go since he was 12, but has always been too young or in school. I need two things for him; I need to buy him a ticket and I need to have him delivered to Hushville on Monday. Hey, he's the one who named me Anti M! He has to go!

He's joining the Navy in September, he's 19, a non-smoker (and non-everything else too for that matter and would like to keep it that way if you know what I mean), a really nice kid, and will only have a small bag with him. I will pitch in for gas. He will ride back to Utah with us but we have early entry and can't take him in on Sunday. We will haul his gear.

Anyone able to help? Ticket? Ride? I would like to have a ride lined up before I purchase a ticket, if possible.

Call me:

Thank you,

I had a great guy walk up to me at BM last year he applied some golden glitter eyebrow stencils on me that I just loved. I would really like to take some as playa gifts and to wear, but, I can't find any source on the net. Anyone know where these could have come from or where I could get some?
See you all at Esplanade and 9 (Come by and have some patriotic pudding or commie custard, Black Rock City Canoe Club will be passing out a couple hundred servings a day!)

Need Magnets for Seabase Cleanup

Hey y'all-
I am looking for magnets to wire onto some rakes so that we can get the nails & such out of the burn scars at Seabase.

So, I'm looking for anyone who has some old stereo speakers around who can take the time to disassemble them and pull out the magnets.
I don't want the speakers, just the magnets.

If you have old speakers and don't know how to get the magnets out, drop me a line.
If you do have magnets, either pulled from speakers or otherwise, drop me a line and we'll figure out how to connect to drop them off.

If you're planning on coming out to SeaBase and you want to have your very own magnet rake, now you've got the idea!

thanks!

I am posting this now so that all have time to note it in their day
planners and blackberries, and be able lend a helping hand...We are
heading out to Clean-Up.

Working on Saturday Aug 9th...pending the okay of the property owners.
We will start at 10a...if any of you would like to see to the sharks
being fed, Hope noted that feeding time is at 9a.

We Needed to make this a go:

Lots of warm, willing hands that are not afraid to get a bit dirty.
Water for the pevention from de-hydration and plenty of Sunblock.
BIG Black Garbage bags and other containers for removing the moop and
fire scars
Lots of tools to go into the willing hands (Rakes, Shovels, Etc)
Almost anything that will help.
Someone with Current First Aid Training or something similar
E-Z-Up Shade or something similar

We are going to try to get wrapped up by 3p so that we are not out in
hottest time of the day.

If there is work left to be done for sunday...and the owners of the
property are okay with it...I will go out with another willing party
to finish the job. If you can only come out to help for an hour or
two...please come and help. Every little bit counts. Let us remind the
locals of just how big we are!

RSVP to the list or just show up. (I would like an RSVP, because they
are cool.)

Confirmations of times and dates will come.

Thank you and I hope to see you out there

I've set up a semi-private chat room for discussing element 11 items. You can also view the chat archives, and it doesn't require any registration; you just pick a nickname and you can join the chat.

Keep the link on hand and when things start getting heated, move into chat to keep things productive. Transcripts of the conversation could be posted back to the group to keep everyone in the loop.

Burning Man ticket Raffle is on!

Burning Man ticket Raffle is on!

That's right for just $5 YOU can get a chance at one ticket to Burning Man! Tickets to Burning Man 2008 are currently $295 on the web and there will be NO GATE SALES this year either. Yikes! So, here's your chance to get ONE TICKET for the ridiculously low price of just $5. How can we do this? We must be CRAZY to make this kind of offer! Dark Skies was gifted an extra ticket and we want to help a deserving burner and we're doing a fund raiser as well, so to tie it all in we're raffling this ticket off for $5 per entry. The drawing will be held on August 11th when we will announce the winner who will be selected by Peaches the Jack Russell Terrier rummaging in the ticket bowl.
Purely non-scientific but a lot of fun nonetheless!

yes. its not a mistake. Things our out of balance due to a lake of father energy. And yest IT IS MOTHER EARTH and FATHER EARTH, FATHER SKY and MOTHER SKY. Duality and balance are nature. Roles are distinct, honor is respect. Nobel work is matched with noble words.

For me it was well work the sumer evening stroll. And lest I forget, a myriad of kudos to all the trees, bunnies, fae, elves, goblins, ogres, friars, bards, green men, horned gods, beasts, wee folk and freaks who came to make it magically delicious...

If anyone is interested in some leather armor / costume gear let me know. I made this stuff custom for a few years and I am dumping it all now asap (closing a chapter of my life). You can check out what it looks like at http://armorgeek.com/Projects.aspx and i have a lot of extra materials that I can do a very limited amount of custom work if anyone is interested.

X-Post from Yahoo: "E-11 funds used to create Vivid"

(original post by DeleLama)

Hope, since it has been established that public communication, not private, is best for the group I have publicly posted both your reply to my question if E-11 funds have been used to create Vivid and my reply back to you.

>> Yes.

Excess funds from ticket sales were handed over by Spice to the organizing Attorney Celeste Canning (on the date he referenced in his last post regarding money)into an escrow account for the creation of an entity that could take legal responsibility for the burn and lessen the liability of the organizers, co-regionals and pariticpants.

Spice was going to create a company for the burn orignally but he was not able to create the LLC in due time because of travel and work and attending other regionals and life in general. No failure here, he recognized he did not have time to do it so he handed it over to me, Chuck and Terra to handle.

The acting co-regionals as well as the memebers who came to the community meetings before Vivd's inception were aware of this.

No one in the community, who is capable of setting up a company properly stepped up to do it and therefore a professional was hired to make it "the right way".

In case it matters to anyone, I did have conversations with BM HQ about this and while they cannot advise us legally they said it sounded like a great idea, a non-profit designed to give back not only to the local comunity but the surrounding area, kind of like Burners without Borders or BRAFF.

-Hope

(my reply)

Hope, I hope you are feeling better theses days, I have compassion for everyone who goes through difficult and challenging times (gone through a lot myself) and have found for me those times always end up being the greatest opportunities for personal growth and expansion. It's my greatest desire out of everything that has happened with the last E-11 and in your personal life recently that you receive the same amazing gift of personal expansion and reap the benefits in every area of your life.

I would be ok with our E-11 funds being used to create an LLC or non-profit for the purpose you have outlined (limit liability) and agree with BM Headquarters that it does sound like a good idea. However I do have some questions and concerns.

The issue was discussed in a meeting (or meetings) and those attending agreed with it, but isn't the issue of using E-11 funds to create an organization we have no say in a big enough issue to bring to the whole group through our Yahoo forum before spending the money to do so? I think it was a mistake not doing so.

If one of the main purposes to create Vivid was to assist E-11 (as it must have been the reason why using E-11 funds to create Vivid was ok) why would the co-regionals not automatically sit on the board of Vivid (as you have said they would not) to weigh in on matters of Utah Burn events?

If Vivid is closely associated enough with E-11 to use our funds to create it, why is E-11 not closely associated enough with Vivid to have a say in Vivid?

At this time I (and others) just want to understand things better. I don't have the stomach to create more public drama at this time but I do think this issue is serious enough for me to start weighing in on with my own questions and opinions. I have to be honest and say I'm not feeling good about what I'm hearing now and I do think there are ways of going about making this all right with the community as a whole. So far my opinion is that it has not been handled that way.
Robots, Fire, Fighting… coming soon! Join Us!

We are starting a local robotic combat league here in Utah. As this will likely be debuted in the burner community the inaugural event will be limited to all wood construction and using fire as the weapon of choice! If you are interested in participating let me know at (inventgeek@gmail.com) and we will be distributing rules and regs as they are finished out for feedback and refinement.

But what if I don’t know how to build a robot you may say…. This is not meant to be a solo effort, though we won’t discourage that as well. There are many different skills that can help a team succeed from scrounging, wood working, engineering and design to robotics, RC experience and electronics… so worst case if you want to participate we will help get your skills out to so teams can be formed.

We will also be putting together some basic community involved classes that will help teach and demonstrate different teniques and design methods to help answer some of those questions you may have if this is your first venture into the relm of robotics.

We will post updates periodically at http://tribes.tribe.net/utahcombatrobotics and on our new site coming soon.

X-post from Yahoo

Thank you Spice for your post on June 22, 2008 and Chuck for recently
addressing the issues at hand and providing the outline of expenses
for Element 11 this year.

If I may back track just a bit for clarification. As I read over the
post by Chuck last month I had one very important question. Was Vivid
created as the vehicle to house the BM regional group or was it used
to generate some funds and membership to do other events with the sole
beneficiary being Vivid. I am quite sure that most of us were lead to
believe this was to be the new business entity that was for the Utah
BM community. After all, why would the Element 11 funds in the amount
of $12,544, the sole source of income to run Element 11, be turned
over to an organization that's purpose was any other than to further
the Utah burn community? What is the Utah burn community: Any one
that subscribes to the BM ethos, even if they have never been to BM?
The principles of radical self expression, self reliance, LNT and
don't mess with others experiences are the only principles one needs
to understand and live by when attending a Utah burn event.

It now appears from Chucks latest post that indeed Vivid is its own
entity and Element 11 was used to create a nice sum of money to
continue Vivid and its planned events. So my question from last month
has been answered. Now this in and of its self is not a big deal and
I do not question that Chuck and Hope's intent is to create an art
community here in Utah. What I do now question is if it is
appropriate for any one from Vivid to take on the administration on
Element 11 if they are not the appointed Utah Regional Contact. I
feel there is a conflict of interest here not to mention that it is
apparent from numerous posts that the public did not get that Vivid
was different from Element 11. It seems to me and I will be
contacting BM to ask the same question that at the very least the
regional contact should be on the board. There has been a call to
have more people on the board which I whole heartedly agree with.

So this brings us to another big question. Why didn't BMorg appoint
new regional representatives? Why did they in essence let us down in
this arena? This one point has really created a mess and a lot of
conjecture which has caused a lot of misunderstandings. Whatever the
reason I would like you all to see what I wrote to BM last June. This
is an excerpt from the resignation letter I wrote last year.

The wonderful news is that when Dave 23 decided last year to also
leave that he spoke to a ranger in our community about being a
regional and he said he would love to. His name is Ranger Spice
(Eldon Willis) and he helped us this year with the event so he would
be ready to take over if BM saw fit to make him a regional. He and I
have known each other for 5 yrs and as I said I will still work
closely with him to continue the events we hold here. Spice is a very
successful business owner who comes with the highest recommendation
from Dave and me. You can also know more of him by speaking with
Ranger SeaDog as they are long time friends/rangers. He can be
reached at ewillis@xmission.com

I respect the stance you have taken and appreciate all you do for the
regional network and the whole burner network. It has a pleasure to
work with you and others at BM while I have been the regional. Thank
you so much for the opportunity to grow.

All my best,
Adriane Colvin

So let me also make this very clear…..There is no question in my mind
that Ranger Spice is a huge asset to this community! If any one took
my post yesterday to be unsupportive in any way I want to make it
clear that was not my intent. I merely wanted to bring attention to
the fact that for whatever reason Dave and I are still listed on the
BM website as the regional contacts and Utah as it stands now has no
replacements and will not until after BM. I am very connected to the
continued success of Element 11 and feel a duty to act in the best
interest of the community. This is not an attempt by me to run
things, however, I do know how BM feels about an official
decompression being run by someone other that the BM regional
contacts. For this reason I suggest we hold off on planning any
events that specifically are Utah burn events until there is a
regional contact or two in place. In response to hope post about the
meeting on Sunday July 20th: Vivid can call any meeting they want
and do what ever event they want for Vivid but I want to be clear that
only the regional contacts can make fiscal and administrative
decisions for events that carry the "official" name. They/we sign
contracts that say our duty is to maintain the lists and hold at least
one "official" regional event. It would be a good idea to have a
meeting but please understand the differences between Element 11 and
Vivid.

There are differences you can see as evidenced by this statement made
by Chuck.

"We have somewhat different priorities than previous event organizers
had. That means that, in the long run, we'll want to sponsor different
sorts of events. In particular, we plan to place more emphasis on
creating and sharing art, and less emphasis on social events"

For the record this was the long term goal for past organizers as well
and different types of events were in the works. Oh and since when is
an art event not a "social event"?
Thank you to the amazing artists that contributed to Element 11 in
previous years. Your hard work and presence is not forgotten.

Finally, from what I see the numbers that Chuck reports on don't
correspond to the beginning balance that I wrote a check for, nor do
the actual expense seem to add up. I am not writing this wanting to
rehash what has already been said here but I do want the community to
know that there was much more handed to what I/we now know as VIVID
than is being stated. I have run this over in my mind many times and
I can't seem to reconcile this feeling that the money from Element 11
2007 and before should not be held by VIVID corporation. I invite
Vivid board members, Chuck and Hope, to contact me this weekend so we
may speak to this issue. I am confident that we, as a community, will
work out the details so everyone can participate in expanding this
community in many different ways.

As always many blessings to you all!

Adriane
Co-Regional Contact Sept 2003- June 2007.
