Hey All,

Just wandering around on the BSB (looking for German stuff, dontyaknow?) and stumbled into these. This is from a ‘costume book’ of foreign countries from around 1560-1570, early in the Queen reign. Take it with a grain of salt, but it is fun:

mdzx.bib-bvb.de/codicon/Bl...,00038.html

The Italians: mdzx.bib-bvb.de/codicon/Bl...,00033.html
The Spanish: mdzx.bib-bvb.de/codicon/Bl...,00021.html
The Scandinavians (dig those shoes!): mdzx.bib-bvb.de/codicon/Bl...,00019.html

From another book which is the same manner of text:

The IRISH! (You can all kiss or curse me for these images):
mdz10.bib-bvb.de/~db/0001/...index.html
mdz10.bib-bvb.de/~db/0001/...index.html
mdz10.bib-bvb.de/~db/0001/...index.html
mdz10.bib-bvb.de/~db/0001/...index.html

Welcome! A stroll through the other images in those books will give you a lot more info - but take it with a grain of salt as many of these images were probably copies of earlier work and/or copies of contemporary work (meaning that the artist never saw the clothes in person and is only repeating the overall shapes/themes with varying degrees of success).

I am taking it with a grain of salt, but I am also seeing some interesting ideas in color combos. Also seeing, while I wander the Italian sections, interesting ways of wearing plain over patterned fabrics in skirts/gowns.

Interesting that some of the Irish images seem to be echoes of de Heere's work. I wonder if these were the originals he based his on?

Bad copy, but useable enough to see what I mean, see this image
    reconstructinghistory.com/image...ry.gif
Note the piece of armor hanging from the one man's neck, and the woman in her funky hat. They are not the same, yet similar enough for me to recognize them.

According to the RH page I took the above link from, de Heere's work dates from 1575, and "were likely based on early sixteenth century originals." Maybe these are the originals?

    Thank you Cherylyn!

Well, the book description seems to indicate that it is *also* from the last quarter (4 Vierteil) of the 16th C. So perhaps both this artist and de Heere were making copies of an older work. After all, a lot of these 'native costume' books were simply compiled images from a number of sources. (Think of it as 'Photobucket', with some original pieces but lots of copies of other people stuff *grin*)
