Storage ideas

Since we were talking Studios, and I am working on reorganizing mine... anyone have a suggestion on how to store basket reeds? It is Elizabethan as they were used in my effigy stays and my French farthingale. I thought of zip lock baggies, but I am concerned they would not breathe well in the plastic, and may get brittle or worse. Anyone have any suggestions?

Kimiko - just restocked and had a long discussion with an employee at The Caning Shop (Berkeley) who also happens to be big into SCA activities. He said you could easily spray down the reed and stretch it, so I'd imagine you could do the same with dried out stock. He wasn't sure how it would wash up inside a garment (washed by hand) - do you have experience with that?
Thus, I keep mine in fabric-covered cardboard boxes just large enough to handle the rolls. I would think putting them in ziplock bags they'd actually fare well since that's how I keep rubber bands from getting dried out. It's buttons we want to keep in breathable containers because of the off-gassing - not sure reed has that issue.

From what people have told me, hand washing the reeds within the garments is supposed to be fine, just make sure to let them dry out a few days so the reeds actually dry fully before putting the corset away. One person mentioned that moldy reeds are nasty, and she replaced hers with plastic zip ties.

I guess I'm going to be making some of my storage containers. I need an extra large garment bag for my 1590s outfit as it is. And window shades, and at least one hat box. Whee!

I've kept my reed for basketery in a plastic bin for years... a good soak in hot water & they're just as pliable forever...

I got some fold-into-shape octagonal hatboxes last year from an on-line hat maker. It's nice because you can store them flat till you need them, although they're a bit awkward to bend and crease into shape. (Thank goodness for a manual dextrous husband.) I'll have to check the links on the computer at home and see if I can find them again.
