Well, ok, although we've sort of puzzled over it before. I'm wondering if anyone has any insights about the white pleated thing in the neckline of Promenade:

It doesn't look like anything I've seen anywhere else, and the Baroness and I were undecided about whether it was supposed to be part of a smock; the idea of that makes sense, but it doesn't seem to resemble other period smocks.

  • Do you have an image that shows more of the woman and what she is wearing? Just looking at the red hood thing on her head, and a few other details, my gut instinct is that this is far more allegorical and fantastical than based on something actual. But without seeing more of what she is wearing I can't tell for sure.

And I am puzzled by the pleated part too, since I don't recall seeing anything similar in the chest area of a woman in regular paintings or illuminations, but I will admit, I've never looked for it either.
    • Yeah, portraits are a little like "The Code" in Pirates, it's more of a guideline. Even today you can get 100 painters in a room, painting the same person and get 100 different paintings. It is an interpretation of life so while it is a good guideline, it can not be relied on to be 100% accurate. We make assumptions based on other fashions of the era but best guesses (usually with back up) is the best we can hope for. Artists embellish, correct, interpret, etc. their work. Frustrating but true.
      • In this case, the "portrait" in question is a woven tapstry, which isn't the work of a single person trying to give either an accurate OR a flattering (never mind interpretive) rendering. It's just a decoration for the stone wall on the other side of the room. They're frequently allegorical. as Kimiko noted, and often indulge in flights of fancy. Or maybe some stitches got dropped on a few passes, it's hard to say. If this is the only example you can find of this neckline, I'd be inclined to say ignore it.

There's a reason costume coordinators ask for 3 examples of any "new" feature. If it's common, it should be easy to find.
