We all love ruffs!!!! They are sooooo pretty and give SUCH a period look. Thanks to Noel, the Casa court and others (like St. George folks) got a fantastic, amazing, informative, entertaining workshop on how to block (that the right term?) ruffs. It was, however, probably a little late for folks to try making them for this season. We've all been encouraged to do so for the following season and we should all see tons of ruffs next year, I'd imagine! The enthusiasm is there, but not the time...
That said, I would love to see posts of photos of ruffs people have made...that possible here? Keep the motivation going?? Oh, and matching cuffs...swoon...

Mon, September 28, 2009 - 1:45 PMOld news to FB folks, but I realized I'd never really posted my ruff photos to Tribes (as Tribes was having a bad hair year when I was doing must of that stuff). So, for what they're worth (and for you none-FB folks), I've put up six ruffs I've made in the pictures. Most show the laundering/ironing basting guide thread, which is removed when you wear the ruff. A variety of fabrics and lengths of gathered ruffle, but these should give you a good idea. There are tons of shots on FB.

I've never met the beauty in person but E-Beetle and I had to go all forensic to determine that it was, indeed, Little Ms. Modesty. Gar Travis did a whole series on the 2007 Huntingdon event which is on his website (garphoto.com) and there are some other, equally stunning picture of Alyxx in Motion. Restored my faith in things, I tells ya. -

I don't have to imagine how incomplete, considering I ended up with no proper ruff to wear with the 1590s outfit I made (that burned ruff issue). I've also allowed another woman who played QEI to borrow one of my simple ruffs, as she also had no proper ruff at all to wear. A ruff, like a good hat for an Elizabethan outfit, is like the icing on the cake; while still tasty, it is hugely incomplete without one. -

Thu, October 1, 2009 - 3:06 PMGlen and I had a long-distance yack about that particular project when he was preparing to float the idea. I was able to give him the back story about Henri III of France being mocked by students wearing paper ruffs circa the mid 1570s.
The idea was that his plowman character might have heard of them Frenchies getting all pretty-fied and wearing ruffs made out of paper, which, de facto, would be the height of fashion. So, if it was good enought for them, it was good enough for him!
Of course Glen did a brilliant job of it and ran with the concept. It was fun to act as a type of off stage consultant on that project. -

Wed, November 4, 2009 - 10:50 AM*chortle* Oh no - I was afraid of this: The medieval gear was not made by me (those are all Gwen's items via the Historic Enterprises workshops). I only dressed, undressed and primped the boys and girls.
Now I *did* manage to make a medieval woman's hat out of a spare linen shirt when we came up short; but that was about it for my personal designs last weekend (although there was someone using my Trossweib dress on Sunday). -

I use several portraits as reference for the poportion, but the one I remember off teh top of my head is the Unknown Girl/Helena Snakeborg portrait. Hers is covered in jewels but it is teh same size as mine. I don't need a hat as a compensation device. ;-)
