I want to know what people have seen in instructional dvds that they enjoyed.
Also what are things that you have not seen in an instructional dvd that you would like to see, or see more of?
I'm beginning the brainstorming process for putting together a Turkish Rom Dance instructional dvd, and would love your thoughts!!
Many Thanks,
Elizabeth

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 6:36 PMEXCITED!
I think I would like slow break downs and faster too, but in separate 'chapters' so that once you've mastered the slow, you can drill with the fast (or so when the fast is just way too fast, you can just work on the slow parts).
I've heard the new FCBD volumes incorporate a smaller window with just feet patterns. Sounds like a good idea.
We all love a good performance in the menu somewhere...especially when it's the joyous spunky YOU!! -

Wed, February 21, 2007 - 4:37 PMGood points! I would also suggest different views of you from all angles, especially with your back to the camera. I second the performance thing - that would just be the bomb! -

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Fri, March 2, 2007 - 11:25 AMThe slow parts of Turkish Rom, if any of the spoon dancing can be included, something more than just how to move to a 9/8--varying foot patterns, how to add the hops, the kicks....
And for the love of my culture and all that is good, please not Rompi Rompi. It's like your Electric Slide :) Every DVD out there seems to use it now. -

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Thu, May 31, 2007 - 10:59 AMI would also like to see Turkish Rom style include something other then only 9/8. You'd think that's all they ever dance too.

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Thu, March 8, 2007 - 10:08 PMWhat I love with instructional videos is the "voiceover." I get distracted when the instructor is talking throughout the video (especially when it comes to multiple "uuuuuums.")
My 2 cents.
And HOOOORAAY!! It is done yet can I have it yet??? -

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Sun, March 11, 2007 - 1:01 AMokie dokie, elizabeth!!! what i like most in instructionals is "mechanics"....i.e., Neon has a split screen so you can see her front and back....Artemis shows you a move front, back and side......most of all i want more of your TQNW workshop.... elaborated on! more about that "extra beat" in karsh. and what to do with it!!! maybe some basic zill patterns? a little costuming?? and you know i LOVE LOVE LOVE the little punches, cuts and gestures!!! a performance or two would be the cherry on the sundae!!!
Laurie
:::::who is jumping up and down in anticipation!! thank you so much, elizabeth!!:::::::::: -

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Mon, April 2, 2007 - 12:52 AMI learn best when the instructor is filmed facing a mirror from behind, so it is just like being in a dance class. That way I can see the front of my teacher through the mirror and their back as well. Please do not film in a bright white studio wearing dark clothes, it hurts the eyes. I look forward to your workshop at TF!

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Tue, May 22, 2007 - 1:05 PMConsider me pre-ordered. Your dance at TF07 was so inspiring! Much as I love the costumes your stripped down look only reinforced the sheer joy in your dancing!
Thank you for your dance!

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Tue, May 22, 2007 - 1:09 PMP.S. Please wear pants for the DVD. It totally drives me crazy when you can't see a dancers feet and knees in instructional situations because they are obscured by a skirt. Of course if you are going to show us things to do with the skirt that is totally cool!

Cant wait! Thank you! -

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 2:13 PMEveryone tell Liz that she's not exploiting the Romani people by making a DVD and making money off of it . :-)
I like the suggestion in class today that you just use the money to make more trips to Turkey with it and learn more stuff. Which helps everybody! -

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Tue, October 23, 2007 - 8:53 PMI think it's more like paying tribute to Roma! Spreading the love! Encouraging more people to be interested! -

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Mon, December 17, 2007 - 6:54 PMFABULOUS. First, join the Yahoo! group bellydancevideos (moderated by Shira). Lots of informed opinions from the people who buy them.
Second, just do it, and do it soon. I would start with workshop video notes because they don't have to be perfect and they would be very helpful to the people who study with you. The experience of making that one will help you plan a stand-alone.
Love,

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Fri, December 28, 2007 - 7:35 PMI would, and I think I've said this before, bow down to someone who makes a non-Turkish Rom DVD. I would throw my arms around whomever would do a Rajasthani one, or an Eastern European Rom, or a Kosovo Rom....and Elizabeth would be the perfect candidate! :) I mean, I love Turkish Rom, too, but...ooooooh!!!
How about the correct playing of the spoons??? Artemis laughed when I told her that I had lost mine, so I've been playing salad tongs. Seriously. The movers lost a box of my family stuff, and my spoons were in it. So, pot, spoons, glass dancing.....that would be awesome, too!

Re: Turkish Rom Instructional DVD??
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 2:29 PMI'm really late coming to the discussion, but I would *love* to see this DVD happen. I've been trying to break down moves from your tribalcon performance on YouTube all week, which has got a TON of material, but it's not always easy to distinguish between subtler movements (i.e., to tell if something is pelvic tilts on top of a weight shift vs. a partial arc). That's true for any performance video - they give a lot of information on styling and how to put it together, but it can be hard to pick out the details (and it's easy to get them wrong).
After watching your performance, it seems to me that the aspects that are most "foreign" to my belly dance training (i.e, what I'd most benefit from having broken down) are the footwork, weight placement, arm movements, and what you choose to acknowledge in the music (melody vs. rhythm). A break-down of the isolations that are used most often (the pelvic tilts, etc.) would also be nice, especially for any that are done differently than in mainstream belly dance. I'd like to see these some drills to practice layering the tilts and other isolations on top of the footwork and weight shifts. And give us a performance at the end!
And while I'm not that big on choreography, I'd really love to see a Turkish Rom choreography video. Not to get pre-packaged dance to perform, but just to get a sense of how to put it all together. (ESPECIALLY if you explained why you made the choices you did.) This would be particularly valuable for Turkish Rom material, since there aren't as many dancers and performance videos to copy off of in this genre. (while you can't throw a stone at you tube without hitting a dozen drum solos)
p.s. have you thought about working with Cheeky Girls Productions? They're in San Francisco too, and they produce really nice quality stuff. (I'm on a belly dance videos review mailing list, and there are some members who buy anything Michelle puts out.)
