Building Your Practice From The Ground Up!
Enhance and deepen your understanding of belly dance fundamentals with technique drills and tribal fusion combos. Rose will cover layering, shimmies, and up-tempo movements -- great for any style of bellydance! This class will accommodate all levels of experience.
Musicality and Combinations $36.00
3:30-5:30
Natalie Brown
Theatrical Bellydance $36.00
After running away and joining (and directing) a circus two years ago, Natalie has performed in everything from top hats to feather boyshorts. Learn to create cohesive theatrical productions with the right music, atmosphere, moves and costuming, and successfully walk the fine line between radiance and ridiculousness. Learn one of Natalie's signature character choreographies, drawing on tribal fusion, ballet and acting vocabularies.
10:00-12:00
Rose Harden
Icing the Cake: Contemporary Tribal Fusion $36.00
We'll kick things up a bit here! Level changes, fancy footwork, and spins are the name of the game. Because we will be building on our foundation from the first class, it is recommended that you take both classes. Previous belly dance experience requested if taken without workshop 1.

10:00-12:00
SHAKRA
Exploring the Anatomy of Power
Join Shakra for an extensive dissection of high impact movement to discover empowerment through power moves. Using action-packed movements from specimens such as West African Dance, Bhangra, and their own Transfusion Style, Shakra will show you how to harness personal power and channel that energy to areas of the body where it is needed most. This workshop will also observe ways we lose physical and mental energy that affects endurance and performance. Be prepared to be worked from head to toe so bring Schmatorade (half water, half Gatorade) or your favorite thirst quencher.
12:30-2:30
Mira Betz
In Praise of Improvization (exercises to gain proficiency at improvisation) $36.00
12:30-2:30
Dave Hall
Drummer Composition Workshop $36.00
This class will be teaching you how to layer rhythms so you can make the beats you know more interesting, creating melodies for drums, and combining rhythms together to create songs for drums. You will also learn about odd beats such as 5, 7 & 9 and how to create your own rhythms too. This class is for all drums and percussion so bring what you have and is open to all skill levels.
3:00-5:00
Asharah
The Cymbalist Movement: Integrating Finger Cymbals into Your Dance $36.00
Finger cymbals are an integral part of American Tribal Style bellydance, and can be a lovely accompaniment to a solo performance. However, many dancers often feel daunted by cymbal playing and have been using them less and less… Finger cymbals aren’t scary, and this workshop will help you approach cymbals as an instrument and as a way to enhance your performance. With the right exercises, anyone can play cymbals and dance! Asharah will lead you through an intense warm up, teach drills that layer movements and cymbal playing, introduce common cymbal patterns found in Middle Eastern music, and teach a short dance combination focusing on the playing of your cymbals with the music and your movements.
3:00-5:00
Elizabeth Strong
Strengthening, Layering and Floorwork $36.00
Have you ever wished that you had more technique at your fingertips to express the rhythms and melody of the music?
This workshop explores isolating multiple parts of the body simultaneously and applies the technique to musicality. Strength and safety for moving up, down and around during floorwork will also be covered. And learn a couple combinations that can be easily integrated into any dance choreography. Bring a sword or tray for an extra challenge.
After running away and joining (and directing) a circus two years ago, Natalie has performed in everything from top hats to feather boyshorts. Learn to create cohesive theatrical productions with the right music, atmosphere, moves and costuming, and successfully walk the fine line between radiance and ridiculousness.

This is a short documentary I filmed while I was training in California in 2008.
It was a part of a visual anthropology project (I study ethnology and cultural anthropology in Slovenia), but I'm more of a dancer than I am a producer/cameraman/editor - so don't expect a professional film :)

I didn't want to define Tribal Style so I deliberately made a very "open" question - It was really interesting to see all what came out -
ATS, improvisation, community, theater, modern dance, pop, free form, ...

The question I asked the dancers was: "How do you think your style differs from other styles of bellydance. What is it like? How would you describe it to a general audience?"

Thanks to all the dancers who shared their thoughts:
Carolena Nericcio – FatChanceBellyDance
Kajira Djoumahna – Blacksheep Bellydance
Paulette Rees-Denis – Gypsy Caravan
Jill Parker – Ultra Gypsy
Ariellah Afalo – Deshret Dance Company
Heather Stants – Urban Tribal Dance Company
Elizabeth Strong – Bellydance Superstars
Kami Liddle – Bellydance Superstars
Amy Sigil – Unmata
Rachel Brice – The Indigo

Filmed and edited by Manca Pavli

Thanks to all of the dancers for their thoughts, time and inspiration!!!

- Hope you enjoy it -
Ever feel as though your learning curve has reached a plateau? This workshop is a rousing motivational tool to enhance one’s personal practice. Mira will begin with a thorough breakdown of basic isolations and will gradually increase into multiple layering designed to bewilder the brain and electrify the body.
The more you know, the more confidently you will express your unique voice. Expand your dance vocabulary, and explore the energizing 9/8 rhythm! Learn the dance in its true
form, and then fuse it to other dance elements. Turkish Rom dance is richly expressive and playful, passionate and fun. Students will dance the pure formto traditional music in 9/8 time signature. Then we will use non-traditional music to create a scintillating, original fusion choreography, drawing on the technique and knowledge of the folkloric form.

My friend and I have both had to cancel our plans to go to Kosmos Camp (June 5-8) and are selling our tickets. We reserved a Couples Canopy (two-person accommodation with a queen mattress) but you can always bring your own tent or sleep under the stars if you wish.

This year (as in previous years) the camp boasts an impressive roster of music and dance teachers, including Mira Betz, Elizabeth Strong, Aubre, Zoe Jakes and Vicki Virk. What's not to love? For more info about the camp go to www.kosmoscamp.com

We paid $295 each, a terrific deal for a last-minute camper especially since single tickets are now costing $375.

Today off to Krakow, Poland for a week and a half, and to teach two - three hour workshops the weekend of the 29th and 30th.

It has been one of the most tiring trips, and certainly the most rewarding!! The information that I have shared is truly appreciated by enthusiastic dancers everywhere I have been, and I feel like I have something of value to give. A great feeling.

I'll put up some pics, too.
Preferably, we need someone willing to host the three of us, even if it is for a day - but a 12 hour (two 6 hour days focused on technique and rhythms) weekend long thing is what we have arranged to do in some of these other locations (Prague, and Bratislava).
The second segment will be for those who already are comfortable with
the basics of this style, or who are willing for an intense initiation
getting to fly within this form!!

I am pleased to announce that I will be teaching another class series beginning this Monday, April 16th.

The format of this one will be different from last time and will also include belly dance (basic to mid-level - I'd love folks with relatively little training to be able to feel at ease, but also be able to keep up with and challenge those at intermediate and even advanced levels). Definately a hearty amount of isolation and repetition, with some choreography at the end of each class.

Here are the details:

Spring Fall Studio
2547 Eighth St., Berkeley
Mondays 4/16-5/21 (6 weeks)
8-9pm Belly Dance
9-10pm Turkish Roman Dance

1 class drop-in $11
2 class drop-in $20
6 class package $60
Series $108 (a purty good deal!)
I have had the Evolution dvd's available on my site for some time, and no one has bought any from there! :(

They are $25 plus $2.50 shipping and handling (a little cheaper than Peko/Hollywood) and if you buy it from me, you are helping support a performing artist (don't worry, the producers are still getting their cut!)

If you don't already have a copy, I recommend getting one: Kami Liddle, Zoe Jakes, Urban Tribal and Devadasi, among others are performing on there!
