Life after Emerson...

topic posted Tue, January 4, 2005 - 2:08 PM by  Nisan
I'd like to hear stories of how people are using their Emerson education in the real world...

I studied theatre and writing, and after attending graduate school for theatre, I've been working in offices doing spreadsheets and research projects and other things that have no real relevance to my degree. I still do theatre on the side for fun, and I still have plans for the future, but I'd really like to be inspired with some other Emerson alumni stories...

So far it's been good for ... absolutely nothing. Thanks, Slappy Liebergott!

My BA was in radio/tv production and I promptly went into broadcast sales after Emerson so I didn't really use the skills I learned at Emerson. It was only after I got my MA at another school that I got back into the operations side of broadcasting. Of course it's hard to make a decent living being on the air so I just do it part time. I'm one of the announcer/engineers at KALW-FM 91.7

The thing is I wasn't on WECB or WERS while at Emerson. I got all my on air experience in high school radio and at grad school. My Emerson years were more or less 4 years of screwing around and doing lots of drugs.

I too studied theatre at Emerson, and I also went on to get a graduate degree in Theatre Studies. I taught for a while as an adjunct professor at a University in Portland, OR. Unfortunately the budget cuts have rendered me unable to find a good teaching position recently, and I am currently working for a major fitness company, sales, not really utilizing my talents. I have been thinking about opening up my own private acting coaching space, and have tried to keep the muscles warm by performing in a few plays a year. But, it doesn't pay the bills right now. I wish you luck, and would love to hear from you on what you are doing as far as the relevance to the degree goes. Perhaps we can inspire one another to rise to greatness.

I just graduated in May '05. TV/Video Major. I'm still in Boston. I do some freelance video work, but basically I work in retail and part time at Harvard and try to make ends meet. I did the LA program and know some people out there ... was thinking of moving back... but I don't know. Then I was thinking San Francisco. People tell me that I just got out of school and can't expect to have my dream job yet, but I'm not really sure what my dream job even is. I've been thinking about grad school for Art Therapy, but I think you need to have some sort of medical degree for that. So yes..my Emerson degree....

I graduated moved to Martha's vineyard ran around naked for a year, moved to Los Angeles waited tables wrote, produced and performed in over 15 original productions/show cases (First one entitled Crossroads), Wrote and sold scenes to casting workshops, Became a member of Company of Angels, Performed in a multitude of shows on their stage, Became a board member for three years, Wrote a successful full length play, Several screen plays optioned a few, wrote and produced a few shorts, I am currently in pre production on a feature and a short that I wrote, I have a national commercial on the air, did a few small indie films... I guess you just have to do what you want to do. Don't wait for some one to come to you, get in their face and stay their. You want to make a movie make one. You want to write a script, write it. I am not famous but I am not in a office pushing papers for someone else... right now, all this can change tomorrow.

I live in LA and work at a talent agency in the feature lit department. My degree was in WLP and I think that foundation has helped me out here. There are a lot of Emerson kids who live out here and work, though I haven't been able to parlay any of those 'connections' into any kind of financial/career advantage.

    ok so here's part one:
within 3 months of graduating from emerson in 2003, i moved to manhattan and got a job with MTV (thanks to a producer who i had met while doing the LA program)... from there, i worked on projects for NBC and HBO and picked up quite a few credits in the production world over the next two years...

    part two:
i just moved to los angeles and despite my resume, i'm having trouble finding work SO my next move is to go to law school and just tackle entertainment from that angle. i don't know if that's inspiring, but basically my emerson degree and the work experience i've had thus far has taught me exactly what i DON'T want to do. that, and most of what i learned there has been obselete since before i graduated.

Hmm, let's see, graduated in 1999...communications and pr degree, moved to LA after grad with the rest of the herd and actually landed a gig at an agency for 3 years. Had a brief stint doing spoken word around Hollywood (ah, those poetry events at a cafe in North Station got me far) and fumbled around the city. I got laid off, shuffled around LA for a bit more, realized my degree didn't do much for me since I had no desire to be in "the biz" and last year decided to move to San Fran. I got a job at a small marketing consultancy (ok, it's still communications) and have been here since...nothing too exciting though. I've refined my skill at being an alcoholic though, and have probably dyed my hair every color at some point...

Quite a few of us are running around San Francisco. I graduated in 1985. I did make some lifelong friends at Emerson. Three of us stay in touch and see each other whenever we can.
