Hey everyone,
I saw this tribe was kinda dead so I decided to make an introductory post. Yeehaw!
I graduate from Emerson this spring and then I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm originally from Boston, and just did the Emerson LA program this fall. I really liked LA but I'm unsure if I'd want to live there. I really missed the buildings and the real "city" feel. Then again, I've noticed that there isn't much work I want to do in Boston so I'm really torn.
Anyways. Just wanted to say hello! Reply! Tell me about yourselves!
Love,
Nicole

you know, my experience is that wherever you wind up, there's always SOME work. i decided not to live in LA because the quality of life is so poor, so i moved to san francisco. there's not a heck of a lot of film stuff going on, but i'm glad i'm here - my life is a billion times nicer for not being in LA. and even though there's not much work, the film scene is more of a community than an industry, which is nice. so .... i think almost everyone has the same conflict that you do when they're leaving emerson, and that's how i dealt with it.

Re: Heya!
Thu, January 13, 2005 - 2:34 PMYou know, everyone I met in LA told me that I should try San Francisco, and that I'd love it there. My only concern is that I've heard it's VERY expensive. How long have you lived there? When did you graduate? I've been thinking about traveling for awhile, moving to LA, and then moving to San Fran. I'm pretty sure I'll end up in San Fran one day, I'm just not really sure when.

Re: Heya!
Fri, January 14, 2005 - 11:44 AMi think SF's expensive-to-cheap ratio is much more expensive-heavy than other cities', but it's possible to live cheaply here too. it just takes a little more hunting to find the bargains. i live in a great apartment for about $500 a month, and me and my boyfriend spend about $50 a week on groceries together, which i think is pretty comparable to other cities. it's a really Nice city, much more Bostonish than LA is; i've been here since i graduated in 2002 and i'm pretty satisfied. just wish there was more film-work. but even that's started to improve...they just overhauled the city film office to lure in more productions, and chris columbus (a resident of the city) is committed to shooting more movies here, so it looks like we may have a film-industry renaissance. we'll see how it goes.

Fri, January 14, 2005 - 11:52 AMHi Nicole,
You'll love San Francisco. I graduated from Emerson in 85 and have been here since 94. The people here are wonderful and this is a wonderful city. As Matt said it just takes some time to find the bargins and cheap digs but they can be found.
A lot of people here tend to do more than one thing for their livlihood. I do training for Bank of America, but also work at a radio station and teach scuba. Home ownership is what is very, very expensive.

Re: Heya!
Sat, January 15, 2005 - 5:04 PMHey Matt, we were in San Francisco at the same time (if very briefly) and didn't know it. I left in August of 2002.
Well, I'm originally from the LA area. I graduated Emerson in 1999 and moved to San Francisco in 2000. I loved it. It was just before all hell broke lose (pink slip parties, etc.), and there was less than 1% occupancy, and it was super expensive, but I managed to find a fairly decent deal. By my second year, I found a great place with fantastic roomates right by Golden Gate Park. I paid $550/month.
It is doable... moreso with roommates.
Then again, I left because there was very little work, and I didn't want to live with roommates forever (and I promised myself I'd give the big apple a whirl)...
But I would move back in a heart beat if I could find a job up there! I miss the city, all the hideaways in Marin, the cheap fabulous food, and collected sand dollars on Ocean Beach...
:-(
Hey Matt...want a houseguest?

Thu, February 3, 2005 - 11:50 AMhey all~
yeah, we're all on the same boat. Like Matt said, quality of life is important to me, which is why living in LA never crossed my mind. I live in the East Bay, have never paid more than $450 rent (living with 3 roommates in a house first, now living with one) in good areas, and have worked on several film projects, albeit not all paying.
I also have a couple other ways of making money - freelance translating and I work part-time at a company. But that's how I like it, since film isn't necessarily my one all-encompassing love - I have other interests too.
Emerson - I graduated in 2001, stayed in Boston til 2003, when I left because the cold just got to be too much and people kept telling me I would like it in the northwest. It's true... but I do think I'm going to make my way out to NY this summer and live there for a couple years. :)
that's that...
nice to meet you-
Florencia.
