Hypnic Jerk

topic posted Tue, June 16, 2009 - 10:11 PM by  Cynthia
Lately I have been experiencing this sensation of jerking myself awake. Its happened in the past (not nearly as often). It seems a little different though because I feel a jolt of electricity run through my body right after the initial jerk has happened. Also there is no feeling of falling at all, as when I was a child dreaming. Now I'm noticing that when I am meditating I get the same electrical impulse as I am pulled out of my meditative state.
The reason I'm asking this of my empathic friends is because approx. 1 month ago I awoke to something rolling slowly across my belly. With my eyes wide open, frozen in fear with the unknown, I couldn't explaine what was happening. It wasn't a feeling a negativity at all

I guess my questions to the group would be :
Have any of you experienced something touching you?
What is up with this electric shock?

Not as freaked out about the electric shock as I was with the feeling that something was touching me. Maybe I'm just sleeping lightly to catch a glimpse of anything happening around me.
I'm starting to get used to the new stuff happening around me. I wish there was a manual to look this stuff up so that I could find answers that I am looking for. But then again, I wouldn't have met you guys if there was (LOL).

According to wikipedia:
A hypnic or hypnagogic jerk is an involuntary myoclonic twitch which occurs during hypnagogia, just as the subject is beginning to fall asleep. Physically, hypnic jerks resemble the "jump" made when a person is startled.[1]

Sorry to all for the cut and paste error I made with the questions.

That sounds pretty intense Cynthia. I have to think about the physical touch sensation question but the electric jolt sounds kind of similar to something I've experienced.

I don't know if it is the same thing but I would feel like I saw a ball of light zip past and explode against the wall and the shock wave and sound of the explosion would have me jolt into sitting position - like I stuck my finger in a light socket. the wall would be fine but somehow I saw the streak of light and heard the explosion. That has happened to me off and on over the years but increased in intensity and frequency when my system was under intense stress. My heart would pound and I'd feel like I'd been hit by charged lightening but all would be quiet around me. It is similar to that feeling of when I felts shocked awake by having my name called.

I wonder if the electrical shock feeling is an adrenaline reaction to becoming conscious too quickly? Not sure but glad to have someone else talk about it though 'cause I've always wondered if others experienced it.

Michelle's theory sounds possible. Maybe you need to find a slower way of getting out of your meditation. Sounds awsome that you are so deep into it! I get that feeling when I'm falling asleep but that's it. Never had anything touch me. Based on some of your words, it sounds like these are all new experiences? Are you newly opening up to the idea of being empathic? If so, you could be going through a spiritual awakening. It's always strange when that is happening. Weird things begin to happen. I had lots of weird stuff happen to me over the course of a few months. I still go through it, but it's more mellow now. Maybe you are going through a little spiritual "bump". Just getting used to all you are capable of?

***it sounds like these are all new experiences?***
Yes, these are all new to me. Just when I get used to one new thing around me, her comes another. I kinda feel like I need to roll with the punches. It's almost like I get little bits and pieces of things around me so that I can acclimate to what is happening.

*** Are you newly opening up to the idea of being empathic?***
Yes, I am very new to understanding whats been happening to me all these years. Maybe because I was soooo busy that I didn't take the time to see that I was getting other peoples symptoms and feelings. I'm getting better at knowing what is mine or other peoples. However, I can always identify who the feelings or pains are coming from. I'm working on that.
        ***spiritual awakening***
        What is that???

A spiritual awakening just means that your mind is opening up and lots of information is being brought to your attention. I felt that way as I was discovering that I was an empath. Just embracing the fact that I am empathic required me to open up my mind after it being so closed off to "new age" ideas for almost 10 years. After closing up my mind for that long and being so repressed, once I decided to open up and just learn as much as possible, everything just burst open! It was very hard, but I'm glad I got over the bump of it. Now I am just riding the wave, learning as much as possible about myself, and it isn't painful anymore. When I say painful I mean emotionally. One of the things that happened to me is that a lot of stuff from my past came up that I needed to deal with in order to keep going on this journey. If you are experiencing a similar thing, it's good. It just takes work and patience with yourself.

It might be adrenaline. It feels like maybe it's different states of consciousness. I don't know. It just feels so weird. I also notice it happens when I am sleeping in the supine position.

Hmm...I've had these jerks all my life. Didn't know there was a name for it.

Sometimes my leg jerks. Once I jerked so hard my leg kicked the wall and it hurt for a while. Another time the jerk was vocal, and I was reported shouting "Get up, Get up" from a dead sleep.

Those were unusual instances. Usually I jerk and wake and feel like a ton of bricks hit me. And sometimes it coupled with and empathic dream. Like the last two I had.

As far as touching? Well there was this one time my cat was sleeping with me, in my chest, and I jerked. Those claws were sharp that day! Left some nice red marks on my chest.

Ouch Eric! Kicking walls and cat scratches..who would think being sensitive could get you into these kind of troubles!

I didn't know either. I just started to plug in whatever I could on the net to find something.

***Another time the jerk was vocal, and I was reported shouting "Get up, Get up" from a dead sleep. ***
I only had that happen to me one time. I was in a dead sleep, having a nightmare of course. I woke up screaming and crying. I think something happened to my son in my dream. I can't remember any of the details.

      Did you traumatize the cat?????LOL

It was my understanding that hypnic jerks were quite common.
In regards to the electric shock, I have many friends who experience that on a regular basis. However, they have fibromyalgia, so their autonomic nervous system is out of whack, neurotransmitters misfire.

It is very common. The part to me that is different is the electric impulse that I have been experiencing.

***autonomic nervous system is out of whack***
      Good to know.

Hi Cynthia, Your post brought me to this Tribe. I have been an empath my entire life. Sometimes other peoples pain jumps into my body and they do not feel it while I am holding it for them. I have had so much to share about your post. I have had what we affectionately call the Phantom Cat that is with me when I'm resting, particularly in times of stress. I feel it jump on my bed and walk across the bed and lie next to me. So often, I reach down to pet it thinking it is actually one of my kitties now, but there is nothing there. I know it is a loving and healing energy. Recently other members of my family have experienced "her" when they have been in my home recuperating from illness or injury. It sort of freaks them out until they realize somehow that it is a good thing and perhaps even healing.

I found your post when I was looking for information on waking hypnic jerks. I had a head injury about two years ago and started having severe jerks at bedtime, which progressed to daytime when I am tired or relaxed. I too meditate and jerk a bit while going to that special place, I guess because I am relaxing as I am letting go.

I have had every conceivable test to find out what is going on and there is no medical answer for me. So, I live with them. For the most part I have found that if I concentrate or focus on something strongly, I can control them, so they don't happen at a board meeting. :)

I have been upset about this to the point I just was obsessive and angry, now I have made a little more peace with this "condition" but do not know what it is any more than when it started. If any of the empaths out there in the group feel us and can give some feedback, please do. I would love to know. Healer, heal thyself is just not working this time.
    With love,

      Welcome Linda,
I wish I had some answers to help you with the answers that you are seeking, however I am also new to the hypnic jerk.
The jerks have slowed for me a bit, lately. I kind of pulled back on my meditation the past few weeks and followed my urges to travel. It was as if I was in overload with analysing my life instead of just living my life. It was very freeing. I have traveled more in the past 2 weeks then I have in the last 10 years.
I'm going to start meditating again to see if the jerks are less than before. They have stopped for the most part when I sleep.
At this point, it's all questions for me with few answers.

So glad things are going better for you! Maybe something inside was trying to call you to action and at the same time a past something/thought/feeling had been blocking it?

Off subject but every time I see this topic in the list I get an impression of a Male Hypnotherapist who is being a jerk.
