Re: Are you using PREDNIZONE
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 12:51 PMHi Serena,
I am so glad to meet you. My son has been taking Prednisone for about a year and a half. We are now decreasing his dose and trying to get him off of it for now. It has been hard though.
How has it been for you being off of the steroids?
Thanks

Re: Are you using PREDNIZONE
Sun, May 6, 2007 - 6:49 PMhi serena,
i'm patrick, and it was christina and me who had the idea to start this blog. i'm glad to see so many people have found and joined it!
i've been taking prednisone for almost 1.5 years... it's hard to say just how it's working for me. we started on 10 mg's every other day, and last november we bumped it up to 10 mg's every day. it's made me very irritable, and it may be one of the reasons behind my stomach problems, but it's given me more energy (at least initially) and has helped my allergies some, but i'm just not sure if it's really helping me any more. i'm going to have to talk to him about this, and soon.
i've heard that women using prednisone do gain a bit of weight and some facial hair has grown... have you had any other side effects? what pain meds do you take? i've been trying a bunch of different ones, from vicodin to oxycontin to fentanyl, percoset and now methadone. the methadone doesn't seem to work as well as oxycontin, but my tolerance was growing on oxy. the fentanyl patches kept falling off and i think the dose was too low, same with the percoset. and now my regular physician is leaving here (mankato, MN. USA) to montana... my other doc who prescribed me the prednisone is at the mayo clinic. it's 80 miles away, so i'd hate to have him as my full-time dr. and have to make that trip every time i need to see a dr.
keep us all posted on how you're doing, and i wish the best for you!

Re: Are you using PREDNIZONE
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 5:58 PMI have taken predisone off and on for years now. There were times when I was in flare ups where the docs prescribed 40 mgs. I gained 110 pounds and a bunch of problems in 5 months. Now I refuse to take the drug. Yes, it does help with inflamation and it supossedly will help keep the disease from getting any worse. I don't know how much information there is about it actually stopping the disease process but it doesn't matter because I won't take the stuff if yopu paid me! The weight gain is not the worst problems, it's the stuff that it does to you mentally. It made me paranoid, manic and it caused me to be compulsive. Now my daughter has been diagnosed with the disease and they started talking about putting her on steroids, NOT A CHANCE! I would rather her take pain meds than steroids. I take MS Contin 100 mg 3 x's a day, MSIR (moraphine instant release) 2- 30 mg tabs when needed (about every 4-6 hours) and an anti inflamitory called Tolmetin 3 x's a day. It works pretty good. It doesn't take the pain away but I don't know of any pain meds that actually take the pain away. For me it takes the edge off and that is what I need!~

Re: Are you using PREDNIZONE
Wed, August 15, 2007 - 8:42 AMHey Everyone,
From the recent discussions with my Doctor I can assume that although the Prednisone helps to relieve some of the pain caused by CED (being an anti-inflammatory medication), it does not appear to help prevent or cease the severe bony growth, which is the predominant cause of the pain.
However, that being said, I am currently taking 5mg of Prednisone per day to help prevent a rejection episode in my transplanted kidney. It is one of several medications prescribed in my daily "cocktail" of immuno-suppressants.
I initially commenced on 10mg per day in 2003; hence I experienced some of its 'delightful' side effects - such as an incredibly strong and endless hunger resulting in rapid weight gain (although the 10kgs gained in 8 weeks was welcomed with much joy and excitement as I was already significantly underweight due to renal failure!!). Thankfully my dosage has decreased over recent years, thus the current side effects experienced are minimal.
I do not feel that the Prednisone actively reduces or improves my CED pain to a noticeable extent. I also know that Prednisone has numerous side effects, especially upon younger children, so definitely discuss both the positive and negative consequences with your Doctor.
Take care. xxoo
