The following article is very long but a must read. (I have not finished it as of this posting.)

This article is related and also a must read, and is very short. It is an explanation of the prior article from the perspective of psychology, specifically personality typing, and is written by a "dominionist survivor".

The first article, "Jesus Made me Puke", supports Freud who claimed that one of the reasons why people believe in the Abrahamic deity is because it is an extension of the childhood father figure into adulthood. The other reason, according to Freud, is a response to trauma. In the case of those outlined in the article both types of persons seem predominate including an overlap.

Psychologist Paul Vitz argues the opposite in his book "Faith of the Fatherless." Many atheists who reject their own fathers go on to reject "God the Father Almighty" too. (I don't see that as an argument against atheism but simply as a reminder that charges of "projection" cut both ways.)
Freud is no longer taken seriously on the subject of religion: he knew little about it and had an axe to grind. Perhaps this is why an article taking up his views had to be published in Rolling Stone rather than in a peer-reviewed journal of psychology or religious studies.

Fri, May 16, 2008 - 10:51 AMYet again you demonstrate that you did not bother to read the Rolling Stone article.
How is that intellectually honest?
Oh wait, I asked a question. Sorry.

Well done, Krampus. I have posted several links on how religious brainwashing works, but you have posted a nuts and bolts example.

Once again I have to repeat that the fundie churches did not come up with this shit on their own. Some of the best PR firms on earth hired the best psychologists in the field to accomplish this kind of brain washing. In the fundie churches they call it releasing the demons. In the Chinese reeducation camps they call it releasing the guilt. It all comes down to the same thing-brainwashing for political gain.
