In case ya didn't know about the kimEOTOver experience, is Steve Kimock, Jamie Janover, Michael Travis and Jason Hann together. Yes, another groovin' Janover-EOTO-family project.

About Kimock, Janover, Travis & Hann,
from kimEOTOver's MySp page: http://www.myspace.com/kimeotover :

kimEOTOver was born organically, Thanks to mother nature herself. In Denver, CO in Dec. 2006 there was to be a gig that was to pair Steve Kimock with Bobby Vega, Ray White and Banyan. It was nearly cancelled because Steve was the only one who arrived before the blizzard of 2006 closed the airport for days... Travis and Jason from EOTO and SCI and Jamie Janover from ZILLA made their way down to Cervante's Masterpiece Ballroom to substitute for the stranded band members and the collaboration was born. With no plan, no rehearsal and not even any discussion the 4 musicians proceeded to lay down a new musical path none had traversed before. kimEOTOver was born. Kimock / Travis / Hann / Janover.

Steve Kimock: “Music is about the feeling you get when listening to good music. It comes from an emotional place in the performer and creates a succession of feeling states in the listener,” Steve explains. “The mystery of this art, the paradox, and duality of its realization, lie in the translation between its creation as a unique and deeply personal statement from the performer, and its perception as common, universally held emotions by the listener.” Like many people, Kimock at first, fell under the spell of The Beatles, but he also had an aunt, Dorothy Siftar, who played the Philadelphia Folk Festival with Pete Seeger, so his musical horizons were broadened at a young age. When a cousin came home from the service with a gold Les Paul, Kimock was hooked. He got a guitar and played it 12 hours a day, every day. He still does. “I occasionally put it down to take a shower or eat some food,” he jokes, but he’s still in love with the guitar and all its stringed relations.

EOTO - pronounced "E-oh-toe" Jason Hann and Michael Travis (percussionist and drummer from the band The String Cheese Incident) compose this brand new 100% improvised live breakbeat, trip-hop, house, and drum n' bass project. Drawing from the ethos of some of the great DJ's and computer artists of the world, they use cutting edge technology to create truly original and melodic dance music in the moment, with the undeniable power of live drums. The music is all created on the spot, recorded, then mixed and remixed live to create an ever evolving musical experience. Since the project is 100% improvised, every night promises to be a unique dance experience. Hann and Travis play different roles in this band than in SCI. Jason plays the drum kit, percussion and sampler, while Michael is in charge of the tonal elements, playing bass, guitar, and keyboards, and hand percussion and live mixing.

Jamie Janover: Jamie is recognized as a true musical innovator. His many talents include being a master of the ancient percussion stringed instrument called the hammered dulcimer (he won the 2002 National Hammered Dulcimer Championship), inventing an instrument he calls the "mini-kit" (a miniature amplified drum kit), playing pyrocussion (fire drums) and creating the Realmsmobile (a recumbent tricycle with the mini-kit attached, enabling him to ride and play drums simultaneously), among many other diverse creative outputs. Jamie maintains a rigorous touring schedule year-round with no less than 8 projects that he rotates through, including ZILLA (w/ Michael Travis from SCI and Aaron Holstein), SPORQUE (w/ Ooah and Aaron from ZILLA), SAEM (w/ KJ Sawka and Asher Fulero) and from duets with Rena Jones to large ensemble gigs with Everyone Orchestra, among others. When not playing music, you can find Jamie connecting dots around the world in extensive travels and collaborations in multiple creative realms…

I realized today that kimEOTOver's 11/30/07 at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, Denver, CO show is avail (for purchase) on Live Downloads: http://www.livedownloads.com/live-music/0,2184,135/KimEOTOver-mp3-flac-download-12-1-2007-Cervantes-Masterpiece-Ballroom-Denver-CO.html
Lineup: Steve Kimock; Michael Travis; Jason Hann; Jamie Janover. Recorded and Mixed By Charlie Miller

I get a kick out of the song titles, so am posting (dance floor song lengths!):
Disc I: Set One> I'm A Lasagna Hog (12:34); For the Love of Strawberrys (10:18); Sir Vantes (15:14); Skippin' School With Rikki (13:04); Hunting With Cheeny (12:02); Fret No More (12:56)
I talked with Jason Hann about Razed:

LS: What's exciting to you (in this moment) about the music on Razed?

JH: Breaking all of the rules of how a record gets made. We played just as we play live, but multitracked it inside the same computer that we run everything through. With that we just needed a few tweaks to get it the way we want to hear it.

We also took more chances on the styles and DJ genres that we were diving into. If we liked a particular vibe, we would take time to find more sounds that take the music to another place, and then record the piece with immediate access to these sounds that we found. We don't have time to do that in a live situation.

LS: Is Razed a live or studio cd, or a combo?

JH: It's a combo. Actually all of our performances are a combo of studio and live, that's what makes it unique. We don't use the record multitrack function in a live situation because we want the computer to devote all of it's CPU to handle everything we throw at it. All of the playing on the CD is live and first take through, once we collected the sounds needed for a certain mood.

LS: Where and when was it recorded?

JH: We recorded it at Travis' place last summer. It was mixed by Travis during Fall Tour and Mastered by Travis and Andy McEwen December and January.

LS: What are some overall highlights of the Razed recording/producing experience?

JH: Just doing some genres of music that we hadn't tried before. There's some electro, some middle-eastern electronica, and Travis playing some great solo guitar in the last track. The best part was we recorded the whole thing in three days. We recorded maybe 15 more tracks that don't show up on this CD, but we liked the pacing of these songs together. For us we wanted some sort of story flow throughout the listening experience from beginning to end.

LS: More specifically, were there experiences & wisdom gleaned from the production of Elephants Only Talk Occasionally that changed aspects of your approach with recording Razed? i.e., during the recording/producing process, did you get a chance to utilize aspects you'd been itching to play with?

JH: Only that we've really come a long way in developing out sound. We recorded Elephants Only Talk Occasionally before our first live show, and it's been playing the live shows night after night that have taken our musical instincts to another level. This recording is indicative of the journey that we continue to be on with this project. Even since we recorded this last summer, EOTO has grown to another place, musically. Recording Razed helped to push us in our current direction.

LS: How many tracks?

JH: 12 gooey, glitchy, body thumping, ear caressing tracks...for your spaceship...of course.

LS: Guest artists?

JH: Nope. Unless you include the aliens, archangels, fairies and other-dimensional beings that were hanging out in the trees and streams just outside of the room we recorded in. I'm sure they sneaked in on a couple of tracks. We didn't have a chance to catch their names, though.

LS: Is the CD title Razed best left unexplained for listeners to explore and interpret, or is there a story or specific reason behind the title choice?

JH: With our thing, it's best to interpret for yourself. Literal definitions of "razed", and "raised" can mean so many things when one listens to this CD. Just press play and put your head back, or get up and dance to it. You'll figure it all out.

LS: Any other thoughts about the CD you'd like to share?

JH: It was a great creative bump for us at the time. The fact that we could set up as we do onstage, instead of being in isolation booths or overdubbing, is a rare thing for recording. I think that's what allowed us to just think about the music as opposed to trying to adjust to the recording situation and compensating for things that are different about it.

Recording always makes you think about the sounds that you're using, and for electronic music, there are few greater priorities. It made us have to tweak sounds that we now use in our live setup, and we learned how we can push the functions of the tools and gear that we use every show.

LS: I know that Razed will be available on EOTO's current tour, starting with the Razed CD Release Party February 1st (info below*)-- where else are EOTO CDs available?

JH: Nugs.net and itunes have "Elephants...** ". The same will be for "Razed."

*Razed CD Release Party happens in Los Angeles on Friday February 1st, at Fais D Do. Special guest Steve Molitz (Particle/Phil and Friends) joins EOTO in this celebration, along with the Underground Orchestra. More info: www.faisdodo.com & www.myspace.com/eotomusic.

This is sweet, want to archive it here:

EOTO - featuring Michael Travis and Jason Hann

Hello everyone, Travis from Cheese here…
Obviously online fees don't represent the best in life, but unless you can make the box office, is likely worth the fee to insure your spot.

The Fillmore's box office is open Suns 10-4pm and is also open 30 mins prior to door times until 10pm on nights shows are happening. (Note: there is a Jan 25th Phil & Friends show happening that's not listed online at the link below b/c it's sold out.)

Sweet brief show review by Bill Kunkler: 7 Oct 2007

Show review 5 Oct 2007 The High Noon Saloon (w/ Future Rock); Madison, Wisconsin

Check out the pic taken by Ankur Malhotra- it's in Bill's blog (link below), and also in our photo album

Live Review: EOTO / Future Rock at High Noon Saloon
http://tinyurl.com/3cnq8b

As you probably know, I was really excited by the Future Rock / EOTO bill at the High Noon. I've just been listening seriously to electronic music for a couple years now, and really enjoying it. And earlier this year, Ankur initiated me into great dance scene at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival - which plays host to some of the world's best DJs and production artists each Memorial Day weekend.

I have come to really love watching electronic artists perform - because what they do is apparently so simple (Just creating a beat, right?), but is in reality quite technically complex (Have you ever tried using this equipment and software? . . . It's damn difficult). And the best part is that good DJs/PAs are magicians at finding the energy of a crowd and then moving it. So it makes a great tribal community experience. . . which is something we need more often.

EOTO started the night out with a great groove and kept it rollin' for an hour and a half. I've seen Michael Travis and Jason Hann perform with String Cheese Incident several times, so I knew that these percussionists were excellent. But I was amazed by their live performance and really grateful to be able to see them in such an intimate show venue - the High Noon is one of my faves.

It also wonderful to be able to socialize with the musicians before or after the set. I always appreciate musicians like Travis and Jason who despite a long career on the road still remain very open to their fans. . . I've been listening to their 2006 release - elephants only talk occasionally. It sounds great, and if you weren't there it would give you a good idea what you missed.

# # #

Gotta say, I appreciate the musical tastes of Malhotra and Kunkler, check them out at: madisonmusicreview.com

EOTO Press: Good Sound by Amy Atkins

JULY 25, 2007
Boise Weekly
Good Sound
String Cheese Incident's Jason Hann and Michael Travis are the music of EOTO
BY AMY ATKINS
http://www.boiseweekly.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A244851

As long as people come up with Top 10 lists, someone will do one on weirdest band names and String Cheese Incident will probably be on it. But, as with their similarly strangely monikered predecessors Grateful Dead and Phish, SCI's fans don't care about the name, they care about the organic, bluegrass rock jams. As SCI is nearing the end of its 14-year run, percussionist Jason Hann (who joined the band about three years ago) and long-time drummer and percussionist Michael Travis and their electronica side project EOTO are going strong and winning over fans of their own.

Boise Weekly: So is String Cheese Incident breaking up?

Jason Hann: Billy [Nershi] made an unofficial announcement last October that he wanted to stop doing String Cheese and in his case, do some other things like have more family time and [work on] other side projects. At least for him, String Cheese is such a big machine and you don't really get a chance to get a break from it. You have to keep in motion. We even took about a five-month break in '05 and even with a five-month break, it just gives you more time to plan what you're going to do. When you get back together, it doesn't feel like a break at all. There are definitely other things, like musical differences. When he made that announcement, it just seemed like a really good time to stop everything for an indefinite period of time at least. At least the whole String Cheese touring. Not keeping it going for the sake of keeping everyone in play instead of keeping it going for the sake of the music.

So you pronounce it ee-YO-doe and not ee-oh-tee-oh?

A Japanese fan came up to us and said the way it's pronounced ee-YO-do means "good sound" in Japanese, which is a pretty good coincidence. Something was working for us there. Sometimes if we do a radio interview, people will come up with all sorts of things for what EOTO stands for, like Each One, Teach One. And, we named our first CD Elephants Only Talk Occasionally. There's a list somewhere. As far as how it relates to String Cheese and side projects, EOTO came about because I fly out to Colorado to practice with String Cheese, and I usually stay at Travis' place. After practices with String Cheese, we'd set up and jam. Travis has always played with guitar and bass, but never live. It was always this thing he did on his own. So we would just set up and play, usually until 4 or 5 in the morning, instruments we didn't normally play. Gadget by gadget, it turned into this thing. We recorded it and thought, "Hey, why don't we try to play this in front of some people." It's been really refreshing, and as a side project of String Cheese, it's been a great outlet and a great way to be indulgent. String Cheese has always been kind of a compromise. After 13 years of being together, people have grown into their own musical tastes and [brought] those influences into the songwriting. One of the coolest things about String Cheese is that there's such a diverse sound range between genres we might play in the course of an evening: bluegrass, rock, African, Latin, electronic. The side project thing has been refreshing, if anything.

So instead of detracting from String Cheese, it's added to it.

It's both added to it and, I would say, part of [Nershi's] decision is he's wanted to make more time for side projects doing exactly what he wants to do. And even though that could be a factor in his ultimate decision, you can see that all helps because everyone's going out and doing what they want to do and bringing that influence in.

Do you and Michael Travis have similar influences?

We listen to quite a bit of the same music—so does Kang (String Cheese's mandolin, guitar, violin player)—and have pretty similar tastes overall. I still listen to a ton of African and Latin music. Kang and I went to Africa together this past January, and we really love this style of music called embala. We've been listening to a lot of electronic music, too.

Is EOTO working on another album now?

We just finished recording an album. We went through about 30 songs, and now we're in the painful process of picking, editing, mixing and mastering them. That's quite the process. We were so happy to get the recorded material. The way we play is we're a 100 percent improvised band. It's a whole other volume of music every night. When we're playing for the purpose of recording something for our CD, it's a lot harder to pick song out of what we play.

If you guys play wholly improvised, is it the relationship between the two of you that allows for that?

Everything comes about in a step-by-step way. When we started off just jamming, we wouldn't even look at each other. We would just close our eyes and go for a long time. But when we started to do it live, we started developing little hand signals that we give each other for like, "Enough of this song. Let's move on to the next one." That's a straight horizontal line in the air with your hand. Then there's a signal that we have for "Make the tempo a little bit faster," and "Create a new song." Then there's one for "Let's break this part of the song down," so a song has reached an apex and we want to drop everything down. Then we have double scissors which means, "We're going to stop the whole thing." When we play in a night, it's basically one big song. We'll keep a thing going for three to four minutes, similar to what a DJ does dropping record after record. We build these things from scratch live. We have all these signals so we don't have to talk to each other on stage. We can just check in. And we're almost always on the same page; we'll use the same signal at the same time. We're really in the same space.
