Guedra Trance Dancing Workshop
Jessica Stadtmueller, assisted by Rowan Rose

Traditional Guedra is an ecstatic folk dance practiced by women in North Africa. Drawing inspiration from overseas, the American Guedra has evolved into an experiential group dance ritual. Through clapping and chanting, a wall of sound is created, allowing the dancer to enter a trance-like state. Participants find this simple ritual gives them renewed joy and vigor. The workshop will begin with a lecture and discussion on this spiritually powerful collective experience, followed by a demonstration of the movements and chanting. Interested women can stay to participate in an actual Guedra. The movements are simple and absolutely no dance experience is needed. Students are not required to dance, they can simply watch and participate in the chanting and clapping. The majority of the dance is performed sitting on the floor, so please dress comfortably. It is also suggested to remove any jewelry, specifically rings and bracelets, prior to the Guedra. Water and light refreshments will be provided.

ok, I talked to Stephanie at the museum yesterday. she said all we have to do is call in and she'll write down our name to pre-register, because we pay the day of the event at the door.

So I'm all signed up! Yaaayy!

What's the dress code for this? How dressed up or down should we be?

You should dress comfortably because the dance is done kneeling on the floor. You are better off not wearing a lot of bring because you're going to be asked to remove it before the guedra anyway. So...simple and comfy!

This is going to be great!

Yeah, actually, I think the best thing to wear for something like this, is comfortable fitting, "natural" style clothing. If you have stuff like that, this would be a good time to bust it out.

And if your legs or feet get cold easy, it's a good idea to wear some leg warmers over your socks.

I've seen people wear jeans and t-shirt, although personally I think sitting on the floor in jeans for a while would get rather uncomfy. I used to wear harem pants or yoga style pants, tanks, tunics or tees, maybe a hip scarf. You can dress as exotically or normally as you want, the key is to feel comfortable.

You definitely want to remove all rings and bracelets if you are chanting and clapping, as the excessive clapping can make your fingers swell, and you can bruise yourself from rings too.
If you are dancing, you also should remove any necklaces or large earrings, because you can accidentally hook your fingers into them or whack yourself in the face. Anklets can be uncomfortable too, if you are kneeling.

I plan to bring ziplock baggies for people to put their jewelry into. Many times I've gone to guedras and forgot to take off jewelry, and realized I don't have pockets. So I have this little pile of jewelry in front of me, that I keep an eye on. I don't want anyone to have to do that, it's distracting.

Keep the questions coming girls, Ro and I are all ears.

Carla, thanks for posting on facebook!

Another question I received on Ritualistic Dance tribe, here's my reply, FYI:

Q: > Interested women can stay to participate in an actual Guedra
I'm curious why you are engendering who can participate?

A: I suppose I chose to do that because any guedra I have participated in did the same thing. I was taught that it is for women only, and have practiced it as such, so I am just following my teaching. I certainly don't have a problem with men participating, and I have changed my mind back and forth on whether or not to include the guys. My personal concern is that this sort of workshop is brand new to our community, and for the first attempt, I would like to reserve it for women so as to allow the girls to feel the most able to release themselves and bond as women through the feminine energy, and not be concerned that their husband, for example, is sitting next to them.

I have no problem with men being in my bellydance classes, although I know some teachers restrict their classes to just women, such as Caroleena from FatChance Bellydance, and Palika of Heavy Hips, for the same reason, to keep the female bonding to a maximum. There are plenty of workshop experiences that are exclusive to gender, for this reason, men included.

I also am not sure if men will actually sign up....if I get an interest from male students, I may open the next workshop to include them depending on the students feedback.

Men will be able to participate in the lecture, the demonstration, which will be instruction in the chants and running through the clapping, chanting, and movements. So they will see the way that it is conducted, and be able to take the knowledge with them to create their own experience with their own group if they so choose.

I put a lot of thought into my decision to conduct it this way, and I respect and understand your decision to ask why. I would love to be able to include everyone in the future, but for our first time and the type of community we have, I feel it is in Erie's best interest to do it this way.

Thanks for giving me an opportunity to explain and for being so respectful in your questioning.

kneeling huh? I foresee buying kneepads in my future, my knees seem to be the only part of my body that doesn't have excessive padding, and they just can't handle kneeling for extended times.

Maybe I'll add knee pads to my X-mas list ;)

lol, never thought of knee pads for guedra.

you are only kneeling if you are dancing, and when you are dancing it could be anywhere from five minutes to fifteen or half an hour, depending on your trance. If you consider that extended time, you could try knee pads I suppose, or a yoga mat like I mentioned. But honestly, I think you'll be ok.
I'm looking into modified ways to do the dance to help those with physical obstacles. You'll know if you can or can't do it once you're there, no sweat.

Cool...the workshop sounds terrific but my only concern is I don't know how comfortably or how long I can kneel.

there is no limit posted on amount of people, I plan to cram in as many as possible! If i can fill the annex, I will. lol

There's always room for my buffbuff gals, just fill a bus and bring 'em down. If the event is actually too full for more people, I will let you know.
This event is pay at the door, so calling and signing up just really gives me a ballpark of how many people to expect so i can set up appropriately and have enough refreshments. If you show up at the door and have not signed up, as long as the fire chief doesn't tell me you have to leave, you're in baby.

          another thing to mention.........

Not sure if I've been clear, that there are two parts to this event. The first is lecture, discussion, and demonstration of chants and movement. There is intermission with refreshments, and then the ritual, and we will hang afterwards depending on how late it is and if anyone wants to just chill.
If you are not comfortable with the idea of taking part in the trance ritual, please know that you are more than welcome to come for just the lecture, instruction, and intermission- that means food, mingling, and looking at pictures and chilling to music. You can gracefully leave before the ritual begins, with absolutely no pressure. If you also want to try out the ritual or just observe it first, and decide it's not for you, you can slip out at any time. I don't want anyone to miss out on this opportunity, thinking that they are locked into the whole experience or that it would be considered "rude" to leave.

That also means men! Please, any guys that would like to come, you are VERY welcome to come to the lecture, discussion, demo, food, etc. We'll just ask politely for all guys to leave before the trance ritual starts.

Thanks for posting that Jess...it's good for everyone to have clarification.

So...even if you don't want to participate in the dancing/chanting/clapping ritual portion, you can still come out and get a great workshop and lecture (and some snacks and chat time!)

    Drumming...

I was wondering, a student of mine asked about drumming. There isn't any drumming involved in this, is there? I didn't think there was... ?

I thought so. Don't know how drumming came into things. I'll re-inform. Diana and I, and the Red Moon ladies, are all coming in for this. If you ladies need us to bring anything, or do anything, drop me a line, ok?

        Can't wait to see you all :) :) :)

that's awesome! I can't wait to see you either......thanks for offering to bring something, if we need something I'll speak up.

drumming is done in the traditional kind of guedra, but we're not using drums, so no need to bring them.
