Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 5:11 AMWashington State is a long way from Illinois. No shaking felt here... But that's ok, we've had enough of our own earthquakes...Thankfully nothing recent though... -

Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 8:02 AMDidnt feel it, but I was asleep. I dont know anyone else that felt it. I guess it was felt in about 12 states. I saw some footage of a bridge in Iowa that was swaying. The epicenter was in down state Il. About a half dozen buildings have been condemned. Mostly all old historic buildings. No injuries. Lots of stores near center of quake had alot of clean up.
They say it was a 5.2.
I dont know if thats big or not. -
-
Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 10:47 AM5.2 is moderate. Because of the ground here though, it shook at the surface a lot more violently than most 5.2 earthquakes.
Came with a large aftershock of 4.6.
My cat woke me up just before, and all the sudden my bed started shaking like crazy, I sat up and it got more intense, everything in my room shaking and a loud rumble accompanying it. I don't know how, but I knew right away what it was. Strange, because I've never been in an earthquake before. Maybe I'm more traumatized than I thought about them psychics when I was little saying STL will be getting 'the big one' and we are long overdue!
I live in Southern IL, where it was apparently a pretty good shake compared to even over in MO. Weird how the ground works like that! -

Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 3:27 PMLisa, my fami is down in Southern IL too. They did get quite a shake.

Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 4:17 PMHow close are you to the New Madrid Fault? -
-
Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 6:55 PMVery close! st. louis is considered a high hazard area. A lot of that is because the ground here causes the earthquake to be much more violent.
I remember being a freshman in college and taking Earth Science, learning about the new madrid fault and all teh fault systems here, and scientists do not really understand them.
The problem is, if an earthquake above 6.5 strikes here, because of the ground, it could affect as much as 23 states. Half the country!
In 1811 and 1812 there were a series of violent earthquakes in the st. louis area. More violent than the 1906 San Fransisco earthquake. According to studies, earthquakes above 8 magnitude estimate to happen every 500 years.
The chances of an earthquake around 6 to 7 striking on the New Madrid before 2040 (which could be much sooner) is 90%. The chances of one above 8 striking is 25%.
I remember hearing about St. Louis being in danger since I was little, but it's something you blow off or think will never happen. Though this past earthquake wasn't severe or ever out of the New Madrid itself, I'm still taking the warnings more seriously now!!! -

Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 9:53 AMI've lived in California my whole life, it's not a REAL quake until it hits 6.0 or better, but that's just my opinion.

I learned about that one too when I was in grade school. What impressed me the most is that there were chimneys toppled in Atlanta, GA due to the quake in 1812. I never forgot that. It even changed the route of the Mississippi river and created a lake that's called Horseshoe Lake. I grew up in Union County. -

Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 1:21 PMwell Lance, a moment to explain. The ground shakes a lot more here. Plenty of people from CA have said so on the news. That the shaking was a lot more violent than in CA, and they were surpised to learn it was only a 5.2
and if those are real earthquakes, then I'm fine sticking with my 'fake' ones. -

Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 4:24 PMI was listening to the radio and said the the aftershocks should start getting smaller, but the smaller they get the more frequent they become. Does that mean that at some point it will just be a slow constant tremor. That could be fun, like we are always on a giant vibrating bed, FOREVER.

Sat, April 26, 2008 - 7:14 PMNope. Nothing out here in Cali. I didn't even know about it till just now reading this. Hope ya'll are okay a week later~ I've lived here for 23 years (my whole life) and haven't personally experienced anything over a 3.5.

Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 2:43 PMMmm...26 or more aftershocks. That was fun. Waking up at 4:30-ish in the morning because the bed was shaking was kinda weird. I didn't really believe it was an earthquake until I decided to turn on the tv to make sure I wasn't going crazy.
At least I only felt the first quake and then one aftershock. Apparently the night of the really big rainstorm a few days ago there was also an aftershock. Gotta love the midwest weather and mother nature. -

Re: EARTHQUAKE!
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 3:35 PMi didn't even know what an aftershock was until y'al started talking about it haha~
i'm just glad everyone is okay!!
