Believe it or not, La Notte will be making a rare appearance in Golden, Colorado at Elevation on Friday, April 18, 2008. Paul Ash (the "hurdy gurdy guy") and I (Nevik with my drums) wll be bringing a couple of extra friends to fill out the sound and will be playing a good chunk of the "La Notte Dei Cavalieri" CD as well as other material. If you enjoy belly dance rhythms and the haunting sounds of the hurdy gurdy, then this show might be just what the doctor ordered. There are no future plans for shows so this may be your one chance to see La Notte live. Paul and I truly enjoyed performing at Pennsic years ago, but living so far apart has made it difficult to work together with any regularity.

For those that might not have heard La Notte, here's a link to a small mp3 clip from the 1999 CD release: http://www.legionofdoumbek.com/audio/lanotte_moorishdance_excerpt.mp3

My apologies to anyone who finds this post off topic. We have many SCA friends and have performed at Pennsic (and I at Estrella) for years and thought it might be of interest to you. :-)

We look forward to seeing some of you at the show!
Nevik

p.s. For those in the Cincinnati area, I am bringing Teribus (medieval great pipes & drums) to town on March 22. More info at www.gaiananda.net/ There will be workshops on bagpipes and Celtic music as well.

p.s.s. I will also be teaching drum classes at Pennsic again this year and most likely at Estrella next year so if anyone has any special requests for topics, feel free to contact me. :-)

I just got home last night and I'm missing the climate already! I had a hoot socializing, but I have to admit, the fighting alone was worth the trip! This is (I believe) my 13th Estrella, and I've never been more proud to stand among and against such a good band of hard fighting brothers and sisters. Calontir had the priveledge of fighting on both sides briefly, and we were met always with warm and glad friendship. I spent most of the battle next to my King, acting in what capacity I might as his "stand in" champion. And what fun fighting it was. Nothing like a crown on the chest to create some interesting scenarios!

Outside of fighting, it was great to see some performances by Clan Tynker, Wolgemut, and Owain Pfife. There were some bodacious parties and many new faces. And its always great to catch up with those friends you only get to see this one time per year.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great time and can post some memories up here. Until then, I'll have to go home and inhale the woodsmoke in my clothes!

After many wars with newbies who had never been, I decided it'd be best to make up a sheet that answers many of those repeat questions. I hope some of you find it useful information and share it with others you know.
Kahlea bint Yas'Zille

Female hints for war camping:
Be prepared not to have a shower every day-sometimes the wait in line can be as long as two hours! Best showering times are at night when everyone else is out, or sleeping, during the battles, or early in the a.m.
*after the battle is worst and so is before dinner.
Bring washcloths and squeeze soap for quickie, in-tent clean ups to keep you from feeling too funky. A wash basin is another good thing to bring in the tent with you, as are baby wipes (DON’T use disinfectant wipes-youch!).

A way I try to maintain hygiene is by keeping my hair tightly bound either up or in braids to keep dirt out. I have a ton of hair and cant wash it out there as much as I'd like, so this usually works well for keeping it from getting too yucky. I wear a veil or hat by day and sometimes a veil or turban by night. At night the smoke from the fires can add serious yuck effect to your coif, so keeping it all back, up or covered helps you last out your last wash.
Head covering by day is urged because every war I have been to is very warm by day (and VERY chilly by night) so wearing a hat or veil is great to avoid facial and shoulder sunburn as well as heat exhaustion which can happen just as easily in spring as it does in summer. Water, water, water....can't say it enough. And if you have had enough, there is always someone else in your party who has not! Especially our brave fighters.

Asthmatics and those who might be: fires, dust, rag weed and other allergins are at an extreme at most wars I go to. Bring lots of your allergy meds (beware of which ones are affected by alcohol!), asthma remedies and kleenex. Other meds like cough medicine and inhalers are great to bring. If you are out and about all weekend, by Sunday you'll need them! And you WILL want to blow your nose (dust and goop-eyuck!)

Another other helpful hint is to bring anti-bact spray or wipes in case you have to "number two" in a porta pottie. You'll feel much better spraying that around before you take a seat. Also bring extra TP-their's is so thin you can see through it! Not good for when you do take that seat. Also I bring wetnaps-both the anti-bact type for hands and feet as well as the feminine type for, well, those little clean ups when you cant get to the shower for a day or two. They also help in the event one becomes romantic, for the after math damage control.

So, Aunt Flow decided to join you this war? Well, first keep your tampons handy! You dont want to be rifling through all of your belongings when you need to take care of that, especially when it is 28 degrees out at 3 a.m.! I also keep a roll of TP next to my bed (besides the fact that I am an avid noseblower in both the mundane world and at wars!) for wrapping up this stuff and hiding it so no others in camp have to know. You can wrap up the roll into a little tube and shove it into a bottle so that nobody sees and no dogs can get to it! Keep this in mind if your camp has animals. Their nature is to hunt it out. How embarrassed would you be?

If you trek to the portapottie and need to take care of this business, take your tampon in your bra or armpit so you dont look like you did in 6th grade, in class with a purse, taking it with you to the bathroom in the middle of feast! At night bring a flashlight, preferably the type you can hang up in the stall with you.

Kleenex and lots of it, is another great remedy for war because the dust gets logged in your eyes, your ears, and up your nose. A good nose blow will sometimes render goodies you never dreamed of! DONT use q-tips to clean your ears if you have not showered first. This will only push dirt into your ear, thus creating an ear infection.

Deodorant, body oils, body sprays, are great ways to give you a re-fresher when you cant pop in the shower. I keep body spray in my dance basket and double up on the deodorant every day. I then roll some body oil in my pits to keep them from smelling funky. Most people dont like patchouli, but now you know why hippies use it. Wouldn't ya rather smell that then funky?! There are other kinds out there, florals, fruity, spicy, etc... Also, keep in mind that sun and lip protection are needed, but dust and beris also get adhered to both so it makes ya feel yucky. Better yucky than a trip to the chiurgeon for heatstroke aid!

Cotton balls and face cleanser- tough to get to soap and water for make up removal lest your camp is right near a stone privvy (manmade bathrooms in some parks), but I doubt you want to be close to those! ewwww! Plus washing your make up off after a night of boozing, when it is freezing cold outside, is doubtfully going to have you splashing your face with cold drinking water that has been sitting out all night!
For bellydancers, I recommend not slapping on as much makeup as you normally would. Hey, it's the middle ages anyway! They didnt have Revlon back then. Plaster more bindis on your face and berber markings (the eyeliner dots) which are easier to remove, but veer away from lots of mascara and eyeliner, as well as foundation (do people still wear that gunk anyway???!). Portable showers that heat up in the sun and hang up are only allowed in some areas with restrictions so be sure to read your park’s laws and rules as ground water is seriously verboten!

Bring plenty of lip protection to war. Between the hot, dry fires and the hot, dry sun, your lips will thank you.

For nighttime cleanup, I keep a liquid astringent in my tent with plenty of cotton balls. Also, revert back to that greasy stuff mom used back in the day-Ponds or other white, creamy, make up remover that comes in a tub. There are now also some oily-liquidy removers that come in squeeze bottles that work well. Try not to smear dirt into eyes. This goop works great for eyes, should you opt to wear that eye make up anyway. It is greasy so keep a wash cloth near to wipe the grease away once you're done with your kleenex. Then finish it all of with a few swipes from your cotton ball with astringent (on face, not eyes). You'll be amazed how much dirt comes away! You'll even want to do this throughout the day, especially if you are prone to zits. The dirt at war is fine and abundant and your face's oils attract it.

Shaving-forget it. If he/she is bothered by it, tell him/her they didn’t have razors back then and it's part of your persona!

Dress in layers-since the wars we attend are in the desert, days can be very warm with little to no shade and nights can get downright freezing-literally! We have awakened to see dogs’ water dishes frozen over, drinking water frozen and often find some snoozing fireside b/c they didn’t prepare enough for warmth in tents and on bodies. Bring things that are easy to layer. The layout of the area is HUGE so traveling back to your tent to dress warmer is a huge pain! Ladies often carry a basket with them with necessities inside, cloak, head cover, mittens or gloves, wine, goblet, etc…men generally will spend the extra to buy one nice heavy duty warm cloak or coat. This is a good idea for women too, a hood is suggested as some wars have been known to host rain, mist, drizzle, wind and fog.
Shoes should be closed, boot or ankle type so as to avoid wet spots, pot-holes, mud, or debris. Wear thick warm wool-cotton socks to wick away moisture but to keep tootsies warm. Layers are good because at most parties you’ll be near fire and lots of bodies, making for a warm night. As soon as you leave to trek back “home” it is real cold!

The best money you can spend for your accommodations: a very warm sleeping bag (blankets slide off at night and allow cold air in) and a bed to elevate your sleeping quarters off of the floor in the event of moisture or rain. Pack your gear, clothing, and belongings in plastic tubs as opposed to bags and suitcases in case it does rain. Our desert rains make for torrential downpours when they do happen and our hard cracked desert doesn’t drain water. I hear tell of one Estrella (prior to our arrival) where campers literally saw tents and personal items floating. Bring umbrella, plastic hoodies, boots, just in case. Use weather proofing if you can. There was one fateful year it rained non-stop for days leading up to and at the beginning of war, so this advice comes from many who paid the price of discomfort that year.

Have a flashlight near your bed (NO CANDLES!!!!) and several others strewn around. They always grow legs and disappear just when you need to make a 4 a.m. potty stroll! Sleep in layers, especially when drunk. Hypothermia has occurred when drunkards doze off wearing not enough. Every camp must have fire extinguishers-and yes, the fire marshal does come to check.
Don’t fall asleep with any propane running inside of your tent. This has proven fatal at one war that I know of. Very sad indeed. If you camp in My camp, I do not ALLOW you to sleep with these unless you also have a propane alarm/detector.

Don’t forget cell phone chargers for your car. If you out there fro extended time, you don’t want your phone dying. Take calls in private though b/c nothing says dork like someone on their cell phone in medieval garb!

Okay, fun stuff: money...bring LOTS of it. Bring back up money in the form of checks and credit cards although most merchants do prefer cash, matter of fact, often times you might get a little discount if you offer cash.
Haggling and bartering is okay at some booths, especially if you are buying several pieces from the same merchant, but be realistic, not insulting. You might even ask, "Would you feel comfortable offering me a discount since I am buying the whole costume?" they'll be honest with you. I would not haggle on multiple purchases under $25 or if you are only buying one thing-that's just cheap. A lot of these people make this stuff and you don’t want to insult their artistic endeavor.

Food- if you are health-conscious at all, or in any way vegetarian, plan your own meals. Apparently them mid aged folks liked them some meat! Delicacies at war include: those big ass meat legs, ribs, meat pies, grease, junk, and sweets. Think of ren faire or state fair food!

Some camps might offer you a meal if you offer them something. NO, not that! But cleanup or camp chores are GREAT ways to eat for free at wars. Also, trade of labor is big at war. Almost everyone is overworked, from fighters who carry their weapons all the way to and from the field, to their ladies stuck merchanting at their booth all day without a potty break. * hint-hint *
Sharing your beverage (I personally like wine J ) like water, gatorade, and juice, to offering to carry things, to building the fire if you are an early bird, to helping the boys armor up (you can be THAT lucky!), to clean up after the party, to just about anything. Keep in mind that sadly some A-holes have been known to drug drinks then offer them at parties. Only accept drinks of someone’s special brew if you know them. I have witnessed many an ambulance ride at one war where several ladies were drugged.

If you are sharing a camp you MUST do SOMETHING! A lot of work goes into these events-you can never know till you have your own household, how much work it is. Ask anyone if they need help. ANYONE.

Now this from the Alpha B* in Schadenfreude-Angie aka Iona Putnika aka "Iona Lotta Costumes":

“…If you are bored----volunteer some of your time. The event is run only by volunteers, and you get to meet some interesting people. Go to the Volunteer Tent and they will direct you. Also after you volunteer, you get free food at the Hospitality Tent, and then you get coupons to put in the Volunteer Raffle (neat prizes in there). War is not just about partying and hanging around w/ your friends.........it's being part of something bigger than yourself, and having a good time at it...”

Tell your friends and family to come out to see you for a day trip. They will NEVER understand it till they come out to see for themselves!

Things we in the SCA laugh at-

people who spend lots of money on garb and wear tennis shoes or flip-flop sandals or a baseball hat
sunglasses with a fully period costume (Angie tells me this is okay but I still laugh)
watches (just hide em)
upper body garb with jeans
the loin cloth people
the LARPers
people who overdo it (whatever IT may be)
sleazy, skimpily-clad bellydancers (wear that outfit back then and youda been hanged or stoned for sure!)

Things you as mundane visitors should check out-
shopping!
the battle
high court
the shows put on by the war staff; everything from comedy, to concerts, to belly dance shows (hint-hint), to kid’s boffer tourneys, you name it.
The classes-most are offered for free or VERY inexpensively; everything from craft works, to belly dance (hint-hint), to how to behave properly around royalty (one I should take!), to how to sing and dance at SCA events.
Period encampment tours-I've been dying to get to one of these. These folks do it the way it used to be done.
Coursing Hounds, rapier and horsies!
The gatebook-read it. It has very helpful info inside
The law-if they smell it, they can search ALL of your belongings! You will be arrested, kicked out as well as your camp shut down. Did you know that? Don’t be a bonehead! They are everywhere! You dont even see them half the time,
Campfire parties-follow your ears, the drums will lure you to some of the best parties! Also follow belly dancers (ask them so they don’t think you are a stalker), they usually are going to dance. Bring your ID-many camps check, especially if they have ever been busted.

HAVE FUN!

Really? So, being not much into sleeping cold I am wondering what the best way to stay warm at night in the desert is. I will have blankets under me, but on top or under the air mattress... both? Also, what is the best tent heater? I have a single Coleman... guess I should look it up online and see if it is safe for indoor use... I seem to recall that it is.

and finally, showers? Do they cost? Should I bring quarters?

I hate being unprepared and being a little (okay, maybe a lot) OCD about stuff like this I am beginning to feel like I am scrambling.

Any guidelines for basic hafla etiquette? Do you just show up and shimmy, or do you need to be invited into the circle?

Can I show my stomach (which gives me a lot more wardrobe options) or will I need to wear a Turkish coat to every dance circle (which means my one-and-only coat will be quite stinky by the end of Estrella).

It is my honor to once again host the "Roses Cancer Tournament" at Estrella War XXIV (Feb 12-18, 2008) to Honor friends and loved ones dealing with cancer and raise donations for the American Cancer Society (ACS). Last year's Tournament raised almost $4000 in donations to ACS! This year, there will be several different Prize Tournaments and a silent prize auction to
raise funds.

The hardsuit Prize Tournament will be held Friday, Feb 15, 2008 at 2 PM. First place prize will be a helmet donated from Windrose Armoury. The tournament has a minimum entry fee of $5, but any more you wish to donate will go directly to the American Cancer Society and be most appreciated. This year's tournament will be held in the honor of four wonderful women:
Countess Haley of Atenveldt, Countess Alianora of Atenveldt, Duchess Ariel of Atlantia, and Her Ladyship Regan of Atenveldt.

Last year there were so many offers for prizes that we are adding a silent prize auction to add to the funds we might raise and share the donated prizes with those who come out to support the cause. The auction will be held at the same time as the hardsuit tournament. If you are interested in donating prizes, please contact Countess Alianora at fretknot@ cox.net [OMIT SPACES].

If you or anyone you know has suffered through cancer, come and support this worthy cause! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at marianavivia@ gmail.com [OMIT SPACES].

A separate portion of the page is also reserved for "Principal Kingdom Camping Maps", so the camping areas designated for specific groups within the Principal Kingdoms can be viewed. The first of these (the map for the
Kingdom of Atenveldt camping area) is now online. Maps for Caid, Outlands and Artemisia will be added when they are available.

Not everyone knows that Estrella War XXIV (Feb 12-18, 2008) is a week long, SCA event for over 7,000 people that is completely run by volunteers. So everyone working at the event, from the Main Event Coordinators to the person standing at the entrance directing traffic, is an unpaid volunteer. That's why everyone who attends Estrella War is asked to share the work by volunteering for 2-4 hours while they attend.

Luckily, many do volunteer, not just because they are asked, but because the hours spent volunteering are wonderfully fun and rewarding. (See the http://www.estrellawar.org/volunteering.aspx page of the event website to read more about why people have fun volunteering!) An important part of enjoying volunteering is choosing the area that's the MOST FUN place for you to lend a hand and volunteer to help. For example,

- What about TOWN CRYER? If you're an active person, like to move around and see the whole event, want to meet people from all over the known world, and have a good strong voice, you're made to be a Town Cryer! No experience necessary, but comfortable shoes are a must.

- What about WATERBEARING? If you're interested in fighting and fighters (Heavy Combat, Rapier or Youth Combat) and want a front row seat, you're made to be a Waterbearer on the fighting field! No experience necessary, but bring a hat, sunscreen, and a friendly face.

- What about helping with ARTS & SCIENCES? If you want a job where you sit and stand a bit and meet Artisans from around the known world, you're a perfect candidate to assist with the COLLEGIUM or the ARTISAN'S SHOWCASE!

- What about helping with PRE-REGISTRATION, TROLL or VOLUNTEER POINT? If you want to sit, meet and greet people from all around the globe, you're a perfect candidate to welcome people arriving at the event, and help people decide where to volunteer their time!

- Interested in HERALDRY? If you want to meet others interested in Heraldry, and maybe assist people consulting the Herald's office to create an SCA device or choose an SCA name, you're a perfect candidate to help out at HERALD'S POINT!

We guarantee there's an interesting, fun volunteer position for everyone who attends Estrella War, regardless of age or mobility. Please take a look at the list at the end of this missive, and review the "Where are Volunteers needed?" information on the event website at:

http://www.estrellawar.org/Portals/EstrellaWar/articles/Where%20Are%20Volunteers%20Needed.pdf

Then pick something you would like to do, and contact THL Eden Blacksmith, the Volunteer Coordinator for Estrella War XXIV (volunteer08@estrellawar.org [OMIT SPACES]), or the War Staffer in charge of the
department where you wish to help (contact info is on the STAFF list page on www.estrellawar.org ) and sign up for your volunteer hours!

To make it even MORE fun, get together a group of friends who have similar interests, and volunteer together so you have stories to tell about your Volunteering adventures!

The Event Coordinators for Estrella War XXIV (Feb 12-18, 2008) welcome families bringing young family members to Estrella War, and want everyone to know there's lots for the under-18 year olds to do! Here's some examples from the information now on www.estrellwar.org :

- ARTS & SCIENCES CLASSES: Classes appropriate for children and teens are scheduled in the Youth Complex.

- TODDLER PLAY AREA: A carpeted area and play- yard (with chairs for parents to sit and visit other parents) is available for parents to share time with their little ones (ages 0-4). This is a parent-lead and supervised area, with a few toys provided.

- YOUTH CENTER: Projects (supplies and basic instruction) are provided for children who do not wish to participate in something as structured as a class. Parents are encouraged to stay and enjoy this creative time with their children.

- TEEN CENTER: A separate area is set aside at the Youth Complex for teens, with projects available and a table of games (tournament are possible!). In evening hours, the center provides a designated, chaperoned area for teens
to come and hang out with friends.

- YOUTH CHALLENGE & PIZZA PARTY (ages 10-17): Lady Elizabeth ingen Iames is sponsoring a Youth Challenge Program to give young people the opportunity to participate in a friendly competition. Beginning Thursday, Youth Challenge Points will be awarded to young people who register and report their progress and activities in the following areas: Arts and Sciences, Youth Combat, and Volunteer Hours. Each entrant must have points in at least two of the three areas to qualify to 1) win the Estrella War Youth Champion Banner & Scroll for the year, and to 2) attend the Pizza Party taking place Saturday afternoon.

- YOUTH COMBAT: The Kingdom of Atenveldt allows "Youth Combat" for boys and girls between the age of 6 and 17 years of age. Participation requires compliance with special armor and weapons standards, as well as the presence
of the parent or legal guardian during all tournaments and scenarios in which the youth participates (see the YOUTH COMBAT page of the website for all requirements). This year's Youth Combat schedule includes:
Thu, Feb 14th 2:00-5:00PM-Known World Youth Friendship Melee
Fri, Feb 15th 2:00-5:00PM-Estrella Youth Combat Tournament
Sun, Feb 17th 2:00-5:00PM-Caid Youth Melees

- INTERKINGDOM YOUTH MINISTER LUNCHEON: The coordinators of the Youth/Teen Complex at Estrella War XXIV are again hosting a luncheon for all Youth & Children Ministers and Officers. The luncheon is intended as a venue to
allow those who dedicate their time and energy to youth activities in the SCA to meet and mingle, share ideas and funny stories and discuss current events within the Youth Office. All SCA Youth Ministers and Officers are invited to attend on Thursday from NOON - 1:30 PM at the Youth/Teen Center!

- THERE IS A MINORS CURFEW at Estrella War. Be sure everyone in your group (adults and those under the age of 18 years old) understands the curfew restrictions.

- PARENTS AND TEMPORARY GUARDIANS ARE HELD RESPONSIBLE for the behavior of the minors in their care at Estrella War XXIV (see the "CHILDRENS ACTIVITIES" and "TEEN ACTIVITIES" pages of the website).
Bannthegn Penelope Dowell of Avonsford, Pre-registration Registrar for Estrella War XXIV (Feb 12-18, 2008), announced today that last week's difficulties with online pre-registrations are now resolved -- just in time
to pre-register by the October 31, 2007 deadline needed to get the MOST DISCOUNTED entrance fees!

Last week's problem affected all SCA events using the ACCEPS (Ansteorra Credit Card Event Payment System) for online pre-registration, not just pre-registrations for Estrella War. The difficulty was caused by Pay Pal processing of credit cards, and was not an issue with the ACCEPS site itself. ACCEPS has assured the Estrella War Staff that those experiencing the pre-registration problems will not have any extraneous fees charged to their credit card accounts.

If you had problems processing a pre-registration for Estrella War and have not received an email confirmation for your pre-registration, or if you have questions related to online registrations processed in the last week, please contact Bannthegn Penelope at pennydowell@ cox.net [OMIT SPACES].

Estrella - How much does it cost to attend the full event and camp? Would like an estimation on a lump sum of what one normally saves up? (for shopping at the event, basic supplies, attendance fee etc.)
Here's how the fees work out:

- People who pre-register by October 31, 2007 pay $10 less per person than the GENERAL ADMISSION fees charged when you arrive at the event.

- People who pre-register by January 31, 2008 pay $5 less per person than the GENERAL ADMISSION fees charged when you arrive at the event.

So if you want to save money and get the MOST DISCOUNTED SITE FEE to get into Estrella War XXIV, your online or mailed pre-registration must be completed no later than October 31, 2007.

Paying your site fees with pre-registration has a number of other benefits
besides the savings in cost, including:

1. Those who pre-register for a Tuesday arrival are admitted one day earlier than those who pay General Admission.

2. The front gate/troll only accepts cash and traveler's checks. Pre-registration fees may be paid by check or money order when they are mailed, or with a Mastercard or Visa when they are done on-line.

3. Pre-registered attendees are given first access to Reserved Parking and Dry RV Parking.

4. The pre-registration line at the front gate/troll is generally far shorter (and moves much faster) than the General Admission line.

Many questions about pre-registration are answered on the event website, or you can direct inquiries to the Estrella War Registrar at pennydowell@cox.net.

The Estrella War website (www.estrellawar.org) has a wealth of information about the Estrella War XXIV to be held Feb 12 - 18, 2008 at Canyon Moon Ranch in Florence, AZ. If you're considering scheduling a winter vacation to attend the event next year, your planning should start with looking at the new Estrella War website!

My pavilion isn't ready, I need to buy a second one, plus get them ready for wind/rain, etc, and I wasn't looking forward to sleeping in my vehicle in an Arizona winter. So I decided to hold off until I'm financially able to consider it again. But I did send in my $150 deposit (MO) to hold a spot for me on the waiting list, though.
Estrella War XXIV, are pleased to announce that a new Estrella War website
(www.estrellawar.org) is online! They invite you to visit the website, and
begin planning your February 2008 journey to Estrella War, a week of
Medieval Glory, Honor and Chivalry in the Warm Desert Sun.

Over 6,000 people attended Estrella War last year, making it the second
largest event in the SCA. And the Kingdom of Atenveldt expects even more
people next year at the new, more spacious event site in Florence, Arizona.
Please consider this your personal invitation to begin planning an Estrella
War adventure in the mild desert climate of the Kingdom of Atenveldt!

The new website provides lots of current details about the Estrella War,
including travel information, recommendations for what to bring, lists of
onsite/offsite services/nearby medical facilities, instructions for
requesting merchant packets, as well as explanations of the Estrella War
Treaty (what it is, what it contains), and information about the event
administration (who runs the event, financial and corporate guidelines, a
staff list, and information on how to join the event staff). As a treat for
history buffs, an Estrella War Chronology
(http://www.estrellawar.org/HistoryArticles/EstrellaWarChronology/tabid/389/
Default.aspx) is included for those interested in the history of the event.

Please use the website map at the end of this posting to help locate
specific details about the event. If you can't find the answers there or on
the FAQ page of the website, use this link to contact a Staff member who can
Having never been to Estrella or the "other big war" but belonging to tribes that talk of the events and having friends that go to both yearly I am reading the most recent posts here about this yeas war and wondering something...
Is it the parties that draw the people, or are they just the most memorable part and worth sharing? Don't get me wrong, I love a good party. Bring on the dancers, the drum beats, the laughter around the fire and so forth. Love it. But I am also really intrigued by the lessons learned in classes, the battles on the fields, the prospect of meeting new folks and gathering new ideas. For me the parties are like the icing on the cake.

Anyone want to tell me about some of the awesome battles on the war field? Any classes stand out in your minds?

Just a thought.

Forwarded from SCA -West, Lady Victoria is trying to find the fighter who took her place in Saturday's bridge battle at Estrella .

"Greetings Good Gentles of the West!

As many of my fellow fighting brothers and sisters know, I was injured at
Estrella War during the mighty Bridge Battle on Saturday, effectively
putting me out for further fighting at the War. Although I am disappointed
that my torn ligaments have my doctor nixing speed fighting for the next two
weeks, I am eagerly looking forward to that day when I can face off against
the mighty warriors of the West once more.

I would like to take your time, my friends, to make mention of the
outpouring of love and care I received. I was touched to the point of tears
to have so many of you come by to show your support and concern. My deepest
thanks go to my Knight, Viscount Sir Leon Von Schrecken, who made me feel
like I was of his own blood and bone when he dropped shield and helm and
took my head in his hands in the manner of a caring father. His Highness
Prince Brion of Bellatrix was there to lend his strength, and to assist me
in moving away from the bulk of the fighting. His Grace Sir Fabian knelt by
my side, placed his hand on my shoulder, looked me in the eye, and earnestly
thanked me for my efforts on the bridge and in the war. Many other of my
fellow fighters lent support in providing shade, comfort, and companionship.
Amid the swirl of concerned faces and helpful hands were my friends, Willeam
Greentrewis, Gavin MacRoberts and Niall Mor. I know there were many more
that assisted me that day. I wish that I could remember them all.

As meaningful and very much appreciated all of these gestures were, there is
one man I would like to thank most of all. He is the man who actually ended
up injuring me. He felt so bad about it that he came out of the fighting,
and offered to stand in my stead on our side.

My friends, here is a true example of chivalry. In these past few days after
the War (Epic!), I have felt it in my heart that since he fought in my place
for the West, that I need to gift him with the relic that was given to me by
my King during War Collegium, that wonderful burlap armband with the green
cross, that symbol that made our enemies quake in their boots on the
warfield.

Herein lies my problem: I do not remember his name or his Kingdom. If anyone
knows the tall, blonde haired young man with the flowing long(ish) straight
hair and rectangular glasses (worn when he was not in his helm) who
initially fought against the Western unbelts on the Bridge Battle on
Saturday, please please let me know which Kingdom he is in. I would like to
arrange the delivery of my relic to his hands via the hands of his King.

Even some small piece of information such as what groups were fighting
against us would be helpful. If this helps, I know at least a small part of
his kit was shiny (either new or stainless) chainmail.

My sincere thanks to you all. My respects to my King Uther, my Queen Kara,
my Prince Brion and His Princess, the most worthy Ysabella, whom I am
honored to serve.

In Service to our Mighty Kingdom,

Victoria of Lynwood"

Several of our friends have visited the site and reported that much of the camping area is flat farmland, anyone coming from out of town might want to prepare in case of rain. The past couple of years have been so nice we are planning ahead in case of cold and rain. SInce much of the land is so flat we are suggesting extra tarps and bringing bricks to sit boxes and beds on if need be. Our household has been doing an all period camp for over a decade so we have experienced all the elements, any new ideas are always welcome. Lets hope for a dry and pleasant event!!! Worst case we will be dancing in rubber boots!! Not to worry our camp has a huge dining fly so the party will go on even in the rain :)

I can't really afford to buy a plane ticket yet because of my late financial aid, but I'll be able to chip into gas and such, perhaps provide camp setting up services as well. I could fit my gear into one armor bag and one clothing bag. my camping gear is pretty compact.
