Proper size/type of tunnels

Does anyone know what the optimal size & type of tunnels for stretched ears should be used if one desires to wear groups of earrings through the tunnels? I find that my awesome huge tribal earrings pull on my delicate little lobes too much. I'm considering stretching my ears so I can wear tunnels to distribute the weight better and not ruin my ears. Eventually I'd like to wear groups of earrings through my tunnels.

Thanks!

I think it really depends on how much weight and how many earrings you want to wear through them. I love my 4g holes right now - I wear tunnels constantly so that I can wear anything I like through them, whether that be a couple of sets of 'regular' hoops, or my big old tribal sets. Many people are comefortable at the 2g size because it provides a few more options as to what you can wear through them when it comes to the larger sizes of earrings, plus you can start to find pretty tunnles with designs and such (my current obsession).

One thing to remember - when you wear the metal tunnels, you may not be able to wear your big tribal earrings until you get to the larger gauges. If you wear let's say a 12g earring through regular 12g holes with no tunnels that's fine because your flesh is flexible, but as soon as you put tunnels in, the curve of the earring now has to contend with an un-bendable straight tunnel. So for example, none of my tribal earring posts are larger than 10g, but i had to get down to a 4g tunnel before they would fit through because of their shape. Straight posts are not a problem obviously, but if you're like me and covet the Miao, Turkmeni, or Afghani hoops and rounded earrings, you will need either a larger tunnel than you'd expect or you'll need a flexible silicone tunnel or something like that.

      Good advice.
I'd think you'd need at least a 2g hole/tunnel to accomodate a hoop/round shaped earring and to distribute the weight. Depending on how large of an earring, maybe a little bigger. I have a 4g hole in front that handles heavier earrings pretty well without a tunnel. And then I also have a 00g hole behind with a tunnel that I wear the bigger stuff in.
You'll probably have to play with it a little to find your optimum size based on your current collection of earrings.

i have a pair of 10-gauge antique Afghan hoops that do fit through my 6-gauge metal single flare tunnels. they are pretty big hoops, so they don't curve a whole lot. it's a squish, but it works.

on the other hand, I have a pair of just slightly smaller 10-gauge Hmong hoops that won't fit through.

Thanks very much for the advice!

Should I be looking for a certain shape when it comes to tunnels? For example I've seen flared tunnels (which I assume would work best) and simple straight tunnels. I'm also wondering if there are certain lengths of tunnels that I should look for.

i was totally happy with my 6 's for a long time and all of my tribal/ ethnic earrings fit through them. i prefer the flaired tunnels and i don't know if you get to choose the length or not?

well, i chose single flare (as far as i know, all tunnels are at least a single flare--the flare is the 'rim' that keeps the tunnel from groing straight through the hole in the ear with nothing to catch on) because... the piercer said that oftentimes it's way more comfortable to go 1 gauge skinnier than your actual size in order to get the flare part through your ear.

with single flare, you don't have to put the flare part through your ear. you can pop the unflared side in no problem (just like an earring post) and then you put a rubber ring on that end to keep it from falling back out.

maybe silicone double flare tunnels would be easier to get earrings through, but i had trouble getting mine in. also, just a note: if you go with silicone, you can't leave them in overnight, because they dont keep their shape. i learned that the hard way! left mine in for a week and the hole started to close and ... well, it was gross.

I wanted to add to this because I've been stretching and this was essentially what I was aiming for. Right now I'm up to a 5g (supposed to be a 6 but when I measured...), but with the smaller gauges what I did to make other earrings fit through was trim up the eyelet. I found the eyelets really long, but my ears aren't nearly that thick. So using a dremel, I trimmed off part of the eyelet. Because I use single flare eyelets anyway, you just pop on the o ring so the length doesn't matter anyway. Doing this allows more earrings to fit through the unbending eyelet. BTW, 4g is my goal and I expect to be able to fit most everything I own through the eyelets once I trim them up, even the 6g(-ish. Measuring puts them more at a 7g) spirals.

Im getting to the stage where its going to be tunnels for me because I want to wear the miao hoops my cousin bought me. Ive just stretched to 6 mm (I think thats 2g) and they have been in for a couple of months.

However with this stretch I used the pincers to stretc which I can only describe as plastic which stay in place with O rings.

What a mistake that was. Not only did I react to the O ring but my ears didnt like them so its got to be steel or Im hoping to be able to use stone plugs too.

If anyone can point me in the direction of some pretty tunnels I would really appreciate it.
