I love these wonderful silver jewelry styles! I have a question that may seem fairly obvious.....but I am going to ask it anyway.
Regarding the pieces that have "curliques" on the end that is inserted, I assume that your ear/septum/whatnot must match the bigger gauge of the curled end of the piece, rather than the smaller gauge area where the jewelry will actually rest once it's inserted?
Or is there some trick to inserting the jewelry where you don't have to have stretched lobes?
Examples of both "regular" and "curlique" ends are on this page if you want a visual:

I just had to have some so I ordered a pair with "regular" ends on eBay yesterday.....and I would love to snag more!

Re: Hill Tribe & Miao ...gauges? (x-post)
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 1:39 PMNot a bad question at all! I was wondering the same thing. Some ends look so big that the hole in your ear would be far larger than the part of the earring that would be in the lobe.
I recently bought a pair of spiral wooden earrings that looked like a large gauge, but they had little wires in them and they pulled apart. The wire goes in your ear and the larger parts are on the outside of your ear. Lovely optical illusion!

Wed, April 2, 2008 - 4:58 PMI'm not absolutely certain so I'll look it up in one of my reference books and get back to you, but some of the older earrings with the curly cues were actually worn with one of the curly cues resting inside the ear. They weren't meant to go through a piercing if I'm correct. I saw a photo once of how they're worn, but don't think it was in one of my books. If it is I'll scan and post.

Re: Hill Tribe & Miao ...gauges? (x-post)
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 11:14 PMI was in several Miao and Dong villages a few months ago, and bought jewelry directly from the people (oooh the lovely earrings!!). Most of the women I saw and spoke with had stretched lobes - the largest I saw were about a 00. It was also common to see women of all ages wearing large (at least 3/4 of an inch) plugs and eyelets. I would guess that they are meant to go through stretched holes. -

Sat, April 5, 2008 - 11:49 AMTotally awesome! Bookmarking for my kids to see. I home school my kids and we are going to be starting to study the things that are the same and things that are different in other cultures of the world. Then they can see how alike we all really are in the long run. Thank you!

Sat, April 5, 2008 - 6:54 AMI called the company to check and they are to go through stretched lobes. She said that you could get them and add regular earring hooks to them and wear them that way. -

Sun, April 6, 2008 - 12:02 AMKathy, thanks for the info. That is a great idea....not sure why I didn't think of it!
I talked with the guy who runs Hands of the Hills at a trade show today adn I asked him the same question. He said "yes" to needing ears to be gauged....but said he has seen people with smaller gauged ears force the earrings through. OUCH. That's not going to be me! -

Re: Hill Tribe & Miao ...gauges? (x-post)
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 12:24 AMSo, I have a pair of the knobby Dong hoops, and the spiral on the end is pretty large. My ears are gauged to 7/16, and the spiral is, I think, a bit larger. I can get them through, with a bit of convincing.
The part that sits in my ear is quite a bit smaller that the gauge of my ear, so I ended up getting some silicone eyelets to wear with them. It works out pretty well that way. -
