Hi,
I love jewelry! Especially unique ethnic pieces that are hard to find because no one else has them. But my only problem is that I am allergic to most of it. Sometimes I can wear nickle-Free or surgical steal. I am ok with gold but I am not rich! LOL Plus I prefer silver tones over gold at times. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of any jewelry that is good for sensitive skin? I am stubborn so I still wear them even though I end up breaking out in a rash and suffering. But pain is beauty! LOL
Thanks

Re: I am allergic to alot of costume jewelry. But I loveeeeeeeeeeeee them. Anyone have any suggestions or know who sells nickle free or for sensitive skin?
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 9:52 PMMole Skin is the answer for you larger pieces i.e. cuff bracelets, chokers etc... It has sticky back, and you cut it to size I use it on all my tribal jewelry, I've also heard the clear nail polish is good for smaller pieces (never tried it my self)
good luck

Sun, February 17, 2008 - 5:04 AMYes, Moleskin and clear nail polish is what I've heard of.
Wow... good luck hun. I've worked in two different jewery stores/goldsmiths and nickle allergies SUCK because nickle is also in both white and yellow gold. (when people come in complaining that they're allergic to their gold rings... its not the gold but the base metals that are mixed with the gold to get the 10kt. 14kt, 18kt. Gold allergies are very rare and wouldn't stop at the rings but effect where the necklaces lay and pierced earrings.) You could always save your money and even though you don't like yellow gold, go to an Indian (India) jewelry store and buy pure gold 24kt jewelry. 24kt gold is not mixed with any other metal so your allergy's shouldn't flare up.
Good luck!!!!

Tue, February 19, 2008 - 7:00 AMThanks! I noticed everyone has pretty much said moleskin. I have never heard of this before. Where can I buy this and what does it look like? I assume it is not that expensive or hard to find? Thanks so much for the suggestions ladies! I appreciate it! Maybe now I won't have to suffer to wear my favorite pieces. -

Sun, February 17, 2008 - 5:45 PMA lot of Thai Hilltribe jewelry is made of fine silver, .999, which is what they refer to as pure silver. It contains more silver than sterling (.925). Most of the new Thai jewelry is .999 silver, but highly mass produced, certainly not the hard-to-find, one-of-a-kind pieces you're seeking. However, there are still some really beautiful pieces being produced these days.
The old Thai Hilltribe pieces aren't guaranteed to be .999 silver. Fine silver looks very white, even clearer and whiter than sterling.
I've found that nail polish chips off, even in just one wearing. Moleskin is the way to go, but it will decrease the circumference, of say, a bracelet or ring making it a tad smaller.
Good luck!

Sat, August 2, 2008 - 12:35 PMJEEZE PPL COME ON! SILVER IS NEVER OKAY TO WEAR IN YOUR BODY! where have you been this last decade? as far as gold goes it doesnt matter how many carats it is if its mixed with any amount of nickle or copper. look for nickle free gold mixed with palatium or IMPLANT GRADE 316LVM SS. yeah youll end up spending a lil more money but you shouldnt put anything less your body. talk to any reputable piercer and they'll tell you the same thing

I could find no medical information against the wearing of sterling silver on the outside of the body. Piercings are a different story, but I told my son that if he wants any piercings, he has to go to the doctor and have him do it..... not some salon or tattoo parlor! Yeah, it may cost more, but I think it is safer! I will also be having him check the accupuncture charts before any are done!
Claire's has a selection of nickel free jewelry, but I have not been there in a long time. Try Googling nickel free jewelry. -

Sat, August 9, 2008 - 11:47 AMI would also advise strongly against a "salon"! However, there are many reputable and extremely diligent professional piercers out there, some of which do indeed work at an establishment that also offers tattoos. A great place to start the hunt for clean and safe work would be through the Association of Professional Piercers:
safepiercing.org/memLocator.php
Doctors are unlikely to have the training and practice in the placement and procedures involved in body piercing. If sterility and safety are your concerns, please note that many piercers go above and beyond in these aspects, though research must be done to ensure this. Ask about how often their autoclave is spore tested, etc. Incidently, I've been to plenty of dentists and doctor's offices that were VERY lax in the department of cross-contamination, and have had to ask them to stop what they were doing and change gloves before proceeding. Scary! -

Thu, October 2, 2008 - 9:34 AMTo the lady who wants to know what moleskin is- it is a thick, soft, brushed flannel fabric, usualy skin colored, with a very sticky adhesive on the back. Cut to size, peel off the paper backing, and apply to the place where it will do the most good. Save the little cut bits, they wont go to waste- just fit them together like a puzzle.

Thu, October 2, 2008 - 9:50 AMThere is also a product called "Jewelry Shield" from Eurotool that you coat your jewelry with that works really well. I know that we sell it at the bead shop I work at. I just googled it & it's available lots of places.

Mon, January 12, 2009 - 7:02 PMHello everyone,
I just joined this tribe. I'm Isaac. I know a bit about metal and allergies....
Have you ever worn niobium or titanium jewelry? They are both hypoallergenic metals that are used in a lot of body jewelry and medical implants. A lot of the ear wires, and findings are anodized bright flashy colors, but you can get raw uncolored niobium and titanium ear wires from a few different suppliers. You might try retrofitting any dangling earrings you might have with these. If you are interested I would google Niobium or titanium ear wires. If you do crafty things it should not be difficult to retrofit the ear wire. If you are not crafty, you might try your local bead shop and see if they will show you how or do it for you. They may also sell niobium or titanium ear wires.
From what I have read about metal allergies , and experienced, everyones body is unique. Some people are less sensitive to metal than others. It is probably also related to diet and body chemistry.......

Mon, August 31, 2009 - 2:14 PMI'm the exact same way-- if I'm not careful with the type of metal I'm dealing with my skin turns green and black. Usually if it's something I KNOW will irritate my skin, say a pair of copper earrings, I will laquer the parts of the metal that would touch my skin with something skin-safe. Though usually gold and silver don't irritate skin, because they're nobel metals that's unusual.
