I have a decent collection of Kuchi jewelry. I know it's made of "pot" metal and I'm not surprised when my skin turns color. That doesn't bug me. What I've been wondering about is the possibility of the jewelry containing lead or other hazardous material. Hate to be paranoid...but does anyone know anything on the subject?
Also, I've been getting into Miao jewelry. I am concerned about the low prices of these two sellers. In fact, I received responses so similar that I am wondering if they are the same seller.
The sellers are baiyige227 and zpandzp.

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Tue, October 16, 2007 - 2:17 AMI don't know about the second one but I ordered a pair of bracelets from baiyige227 and I'm extremely happy with them. They sent them out quickly too. I will definitely be ordering from them again.

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Tue, October 16, 2007 - 6:40 AMfrom what i've learned about kuchi jewelry, they throw whatever metal they have available to them at the time into the pot. so i'm sure that at times there is lead in it, sometimes not. there have been several discussions about this subject, and many recommend using clear nail polish on the backs to act as a buffer. for the most part, my wife doesn't wear newer kuchi jewelry anymore. -

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Tue, October 16, 2007 - 8:46 AMI remember seeing an article somewhere on the lower cost 'Chinese', or 'Hill Tribe' Silver and the high lead content. Maybe Googling the subject will pull it up.
For the Kuchi, they do use lead sometimes. Most of the pot metal is Silver, Copper, Brass, with probably Nickel, but sealing or backing it help.
Probably do the same with the Chinese jewelry, but if it's an earring it may be a problem.

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Tue, October 16, 2007 - 10:49 AMThank you all! It's hard to quickly research the subject. I'll try backing or coating my bracelets. Can't hurt, right?
Thanks for the reference on the seller. I've actually already bought a pair of bracelets and I'm looking at some earrings.
Does anyone know of a good source of tribal sterling silver earrings? -

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Thu, October 18, 2007 - 9:35 AMSo will coating it in clear polish keep the lead sealed well enough? I've seen a lot on e-bay and if it's okay within this tribe's boundaries, wondered which buyers you've felt good about using so I don't waste my money. Some pices look great online only to be too bendy or cheap once you get them. -

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 8:22 AMIts fine to say which vendors you feel comfortable with. You can even start a new thread and ask people. I just want to keep specific items for sale off of this tribe so it doesn't end up ONLY being items offered for sale.

Sat, October 20, 2007 - 8:20 AMAshley, what kind of tribal sterling are you looking for? Usually 'tribal' and 'sterling' are somewhat separate.

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Tue, October 23, 2007 - 1:37 PMYou can purchase lead test kits for jewelry, I don't have a recommendation on where as I just 'Googled' to see and they're available all over the internet ... and I recommend starting with consumer reports and seeing which ones work best. -

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 11:17 AMI would be cautious of lead testing kits...I work in the fashion jewelry industry, and know it costs quite a large amount to test any single piece, let along several, and even then, the test results aren't always conclusive. After having recently going over to China to meet some of our manufacturers and potential ones...I've discovered that some take it seriously and work to keep their stuff lead-safe, which is a very expensive process often involving multiple machines for the same process. Others think it's a "conspiracy" (the whole lead-safe issue), and pretty much pass anything off as fine. -

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 8:04 AMI've come somewhat to the same conclusion (about the dangers of lead for adults). After researching this on-line, it appears that most of the dangers affect children and ingesting products containing lead. Only 1% of lead is absorbed through the skin. From this article: www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/fdalead.html
"While adults absorb about 11 percent of lead reaching the digestive tract, children may absorb 30 to 75 percent. When lead is inhaled, up to 50 percent is absorbed, but less than 1 percent of lead is absorbed when it comes in contact with the skin."
I think it is dangerous if you have young children that might chew on your jewelry, you are pregnant, or inserting jewelry into an open wound (not quite healed piercings...?). Since I do not wear my jewelry for extended periods of time, I'm not too concerned about bracelets, necklaces, etc. The earrings are a little different. My ears are stretched and I'd like to keep them protected. So I just stretched a little larger than my earrings so I can wear through tunnels. Then I don't have to worry about it.

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 12:18 PMThat's what I would suggest bout the earrings - wear through tunnels.
I don't worry too much about lead either. I think Indian jewelry has a greater lead content then most other kinds. They use lead beads a lot of times. You can tell, they are the ones that look like, well, lead fishing weights! -

Re: Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?
Sun, August 30, 2009 - 5:48 PMi know this is sort of late but, aside from dancing, medicine is another one of my passions and ive done extensive research on metals...ive had quite an experience with them...but anyway here are a few and good tips for jewelry, if it weighs a lot dont buy it it might even have mercury. mercury balls were used in world war 2 as a weapon, they would be thrown and the mercury would blind their enemies on contact, a 2 inch ball of mercury weighed 30 pounds, so if the jewelry is small and weighs a lot dont buy it! also, smell it. if it smells like a coin, dont buy it. nickel is a poison that can give you brain damage and tumors. i personally just stick to silver. no smell, no weight=good piece of jewelry. i never buy the cheap metal stuff its poison.
