Contemplating gages

Okay, ladies: I need your insight/input. I have been a wearer of heavy earrings since my late teens. . .and I'm now 46. I haven't ripped a lobe (yet) but have considered surgery as a preventative (until I saw the price) as I have nice, long slits. I just bought an unbelievable--and unbelievably heavy--pair of earrings, put them in this morning, and promptly took them out. I'm afraid to wear them. Have any of you considered gages as a means of supporting your ear holes? I am not interested in how gages look--perhaps part of my reluctance to have investigated before--and would get the smallest ones possible. Does it work in terms of protection by distributing the weight? I know why I have slits. . .the little metal wires have acted like a knife in my ear over time, slowly slicing the hole into a slit. Gages, obviously, would at least prevent any more of that. Your take on it all? Thanks!

as far as for wearing heavier earrings, using gauged tunnels is a great way to distribute the weight and wear them more comfortably.
although in your case where you have slits rather than stretched holes, i'm not sure if the weight would affect the earlobe differently.
however there are methods of gauging ears more quickly which basically involves slicing a hole rather than stretching...and i'm no expert, so i'm not really sure what would be your best option.

i would find a *reputable* piercing/body modification shop in you area and go in and ask some questions! :)

I know several people that wear gauged tunnels and they say they do work well to distribute the weight. It would seem likely to me to work with slits just as well, as long as you get the proper size tunnels. But if your slits are very large, the earrings will slide around inside the tunnels and if they are hoops, will turn completely upside down! I wonder if there is some kind of large silicon stopper with a small hole in the center that you could put inside the tunnel to prevent this.

Obviously I have no advice here, just wondering aloud. Sorry...

I wear tunnels in my ears and I can wear really heavy earrings for prolonged periods of time. Its more comfortable than ever before. I was always a fan of wearing heavy earrings but now I dont have to worry.

Like Zareen says, hoops will turn around and around but if you get the type that go together seamlessley they are fine.

I wear these through my tunnels : cgi.ebay.co.uk/UNIQUE-CHI....m153.l1262

They were bought as a gift for me whilst I was stretching my lobes and I still wanted to be able to wear them and they stay in lovely.

This is one of my lobes now : tribes.tribe.net/tattooedp...367ed5adc0

I wear these all of the time

And yeah, of course I spelled it wrong! I contemplated "gauges"--the correct spelling--but it seems so, well, "mechanical", like a tool--oh well, shows you how much I know! Still thinking bout it--our local piercing place has very tiny glass ones that won't show much. I'm thinking, thinking. . .perhaps too much. My way, of course.
        Thanks for the input, ladies.

if you plan on stretching bigger than any current piercing,
its not really reccommended to use heavy hanging-style
jewelry through tunnels/earlets. what happens is the weight
puts too much stress on the bottom of your earlobe only
stretching the bottom, directing the piercing to there.
im at 1" and i did that for a couple months, i ended up
having to get my left earlobe scalpeled to re-direct the
        piercing.

I know you're not looking to go this high in gauge (10g is the smallest they carry), but I've been eyeing these earskins for when I want to wear regular earrings through my gauged holes. Scroll down to the bottom where the photos are. You can hardly see the clear one's. There are colored versions too.

Thanks, Sandi! My local guy has those--and that is exactly what I am considering. It's great to see a pic of them. THey're as subtle as I'd hoped they'd be. Maybe I'll get my ass over there tomorrow after class. . .

I have my ears at a 0g and am quite happy with the heavy earrings that I wear. The primary issue with stretching and wearing tunnels is finding the right size of tunnel to get your earrings through. Metal tunnels are inflexible and a bit hard to work with at the smaller sizes. I found at about 6g I could get the majority of earrings through the tunnel, though not all, 4g is probably ideal. Also, if you have been wearing earrings that long and are already partially stretched it should be very easy to get to a 6g or 4g tunnel.
