Question

I just bought a pair of small brass Fulani earrings and have been wearing them in my second piercing. Now, I know how brass reacts and my piercing holes have turned green (a natural chemical reaction)..... but having never worn brass earrings before, I was wondering if anyone else had worn these for a length of time and had come across infections due to the metal (not being gold or silver)???

Kuchi belt with Lapis???

Okay, I have a Kuchi belt that has lapis lazuli inlays. The pendants are "mounted" on that sturdy cord belt with buttons to fasten them. Are these belts more valuable in belt form or should one feel free to use the pendants on other things?????

Me and a friend are GoGo Dancing at a Egyptian themed party in a week or so and want to make our own costumes. Any ides as to what shops in downtown LA would have good fabric, jewelry, or anything else that would be useful? Were thinking a sexy Cleopatra look. Any help is greatly appreciated

I have excitedly just received my first pair of these & realised that I have never seen a picture of them being worn by the Tuareg women.
Searched for images on the net & couldn't find any..however on her yummy website Erica from Organic Jewellery

mentions that there is a Pic in 'Africa Adorned' by Angela Fisher.
Would anyone have this book & perhaps be able to post a scan or copy of the picture??

I just bought this today at a flea market & was wondering if anyone had some insight.

http://tribes.tribe.net/ethnicjewelry/photos/17469e1b-7de3-404a-a0e2-ff426f08b0be

The lady who sold it to me said she got it in Niger, but that it could have been from Nigeria or the Ivory Coast & was up to 300 years old. I'm really curious about this symbol http://tribes.tribe.net/ethnicjewelry/photos/a706e023-9f54-404f-93b1-1cf6385e054d

Maybe it's kind of a crude version of this? http://www.welltempered.net/adinkra/htmls/adinkra/nyawu.htm

She had about 10 of them & I sooo wanted to buy the lot but my wallet wouldn't let me. :-)

Help identifying this thing?

I know it's annoying that I don't have a photo of this item, but here's the description:

It looks like a pendant. It is flat and round, about the size of the palm of my hand. It looks to be made of brass, but I won't swear to that. Let's just say it is the color of brass, warm yet somewhat dull. Around the circumference, there is wirework, little wire wavy design. In the center there is what appears to be a piece of red glass (maybe plastic?) with what appears to be letters or characters carved into it (looks a little like the sign for "om" but I don't think it is--maybe Arabic something or other?).

Hanging from the bottom of the thing are chains of about two inches, and they look like the style of chain I have seen on Turkman jewelry. Each chain ends in a little diamond or teardrop shaped piece of metal.

It makes a wonderful sound when you wiggle it.

The closest thing it looks like is a Turk(o) man pendant, but it does not seem to be that "sun and moon" gold wash over silver that you see in so much Turkman jewelry.

I bought this in new orleans from a shop owner who did not know its history. I have no idea about its age, but I don't think it is terribly old.

It has a pretty good weight to it; I don't think it is tin "junk". I have never seen anything that looks exactly like it.

Any insights very appreciated!

Contemplating gages

Okay, ladies: I need your insight/input. I have been a wearer of heavy earrings since my late teens. . .and I'm now 46. I haven't ripped a lobe (yet) but have considered surgery as a preventative (until I saw the price) as I have nice, long slits. I just bought an unbelievable--and unbelievably heavy--pair of earrings, put them in this morning, and promptly took them out. I'm afraid to wear them. Have any of you considered gages as a means of supporting your ear holes? I am not interested in how gages look--perhaps part of my reluctance to have investigated before--and would get the smallest ones possible. Does it work in terms of protection by distributing the weight? I know why I have slits. . .the little metal wires have acted like a knife in my ear over time, slowly slicing the hole into a slit. Gages, obviously, would at least prevent any more of that. Your take on it all? Thanks!

This kid walked into my work yesterday with at 2" gauges in his ears! He must have been 19 at most, and the gauges were dark wood along the grain. I asked him where he got them and he looked at me funny and said "I made them"

Just wanted to share that story about some random kid's talent and dedication to an "ethnic" look.

Does anyone have any insights as to how this is going to affect the Kuchi jewelry market? Vicky, are you around? Can you give us more info?
Original article located at:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/mcclatchy/20080421/wl_mcclatchy/2916396

By Saeed Shah, McClatchy Newspapers Mon Apr 21, 6:53 PM ET

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Pakistani authorities have resumed sending tens of thousands of Afghan refugees, many of whom have lived for decades in camps near the Afghanistan - Pakistan border, back to Afghanistan .

The ouster of the Afghans from the massive Jalozai refugee camp just east of Peshawar was put on hold last week after fighting broke out along the highway that leads through the legendary Khyber Pass to the Afghan border.

On Sunday, however, brightly colored trucks were making their way through the pass again, loaded with the worldly possessions of thousands of Afghan families. Women and children perched on top as the trucks lurched forward.

An estimated 2,000 Afghan refugees passed through the border checkpoint at Torkham on Sunday. They came in giant, open-top trucks, heavily laden with everything from doors, window frames and beds to piles of wooden beams and planks that will be used to construct homes in Afghanistan .

Rahul Amin , a bus conductor, was born in Jalozai. Now 19, he said that Pakistan is his home.

"We don't think of Afghanistan as our country," he said. "When I have raised my voice, it is for Pakistan ."

Jalozai was established in 1980 as Afghans began fleeing the Soviet invasion of their country, and it was the largest and oldest camp for Afghan refugees in Pakistan , once housing 80,000 people in a small city of solid mud or brick homes, electricity, running water and schools.

Last week, bulldozers moved in to begin demolition, making rubble of the houses and shops that once stood along the settlement's main road. Neat piles of bricks and wood marked what some refugees had salvaged for resale. Others are taking the material with them.

Shah Ghasi, 70, sat alongside a pile of wood, hoping for customers. His home in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan , was destroyed during the Soviet invasion of the 1980s. He's been at Jalozai for 24 years.

"We are homeless here now, and we will be homeless there" in Afghanistan , he said. "I don't have the money to go."

More than 3 million Afghans fled to Pakistan , where they've lived ever since without being given citizenship.

"In other countries, you get citizenship after five years, here you don't get it after 20 years," said 21-year-old Hazmat Khan. "This (Jalozai) was just a jungle. We turned it into a town. There wasn't even a donkey here before."

"My younger brother went to Kabul . He doesn't have so much as water there."

A Pakistani official at the camp, who declined to be identified because he wasn't authorized to speak to reporters, said that 1,043 families had left the camp as of Saturday. Some 10,000 families remain.

The official said that refugees had the option of relocating to another camp, but just 38 families had done so. "They signed a contract with us; 50 (Afghan) elders signed an agreement to leave. Their continued stay here is illegal," he said.

It costs about $400 to hire a truck to take a family and its possessions to Afghanistan . In Kabul, Afghanistan's capital, returning families can claim $100 per person from the United Nations .

Pakistani authorities had set April 15 as the deadline for all refugees to leave Jalozai. It was the second deadline; the first had been extended by six months. But this time, the authorities meant business, sending in the bulldozers.

Pakistan plans to send all Afghan refugees back by the end of 2009. But the office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in Pakistan has warned that so speedy a resettlement program risks creating a humanitarian crisis, given the conflict in Afghanistan .

"There are not the jobs for these people in Afghanistan . It is not sustainable," said UNHCR spokeswoman Vivian Tan in Islamabad . "They will only come back to Pakistan ."

Pakistan's haste may be tied to security concerns. Jalozai and other camps were once the breeding ground for anti-Soviet jihadis. These days, a different breed of jihadi, the Taliban, are believed to use them as places to rest between campaigns.

The Shamshatoo camp is associated with Afghan military commander Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, while Ustad Abdul Rasul Sayyaf, a veteran mujaheddin fighter and hard-line Islamic theologian, allegedly ran Jalozai.

"You never know who comes and who goes in these camps," said Mehmood Shah , a former top provincial interior ministry official. "The government of Pakistan has decided that the Afghan mujaheddin must finally go back."

Shah said that the U.S. officials he'd discussed the issue with were uncertain whether closing the camps was a good idea.

"The U.S. was 50/50 on this issue," Shah said.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this and would like to seriously get into tribal fusion bellydancing. I've been a fan of it for a couple of years now and want to start doing it. So, I was looking at several online stores and ebay for costumes, belts, jewelry and things of that sort. I ran into a store, silvex.org. and I believe it is a business based from the MIddle East (they don't specify what country though). Has anyone ever heard and/or purchased anything from this store? I would really love to purchase a great belt at a decent price since I don't know how to make one, nor do I have any experience in making clothing for that matter. Anyway, I hope to get to know you all and make friends with all of you :) Any information on this would also be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I found a cool bracelet in a yard sale the other day. It's gold colored, they told me it was gold/silver alloy. it consists of a mesh of gold links with little flowers on the links, and end pieces with applied decoration. It closes with a pin... kind of looks vaguely Indian to me. I put a photo in the album... anyone have any more information about it for me?
Any input on pros and cons of either would be great. If I can't use them then I will try the old fashioned elbow grease, though I have found a great tutorial on cleaning on a different tribe. I'll find it and post it if anybody is interested! Thanks!

I will be taking a plane across the country soon and I want to bring gratuitous amounts of bling to wear at the event I am going to. This will be my first time packing for a bellydance event.
I have thought about packing the more expensive kuchi stuff in my carry-on luggage so I can keep my eye on it. Has anyone ever had a problem doing that? Would I be better off putting it in my checked luggage?
Maybe it doesn't matter.....I just don't want it to disappear from my luggage or to have security take it away because the pointy metal bits somehow constitute "weapons."

Hello again,
I have this question. I've been looking for tribal arm cuffs (I'll bring up what the girls of The Indigo wear again). I keep finding lots and lots of tribal bracelets, but nothing that fits around the upper arm, only the ubiquitous bellydance snake wrap.
Where do you guys get Kuchi, Turkman or Tuareg looking arm cuffs? Do you just use wider bracelets? Help!

Vendors, I just want to post a reminder for this tribe. I know that people frequently ask for information on where to get specific items and I love that this tribe can help them out in any way we can. If you have their item, please feel free to let them know that and even post a link to your site showing where they can find it. But please keep the focus of your posts to THE SPECIFIC ITEM REQUESTED.

Here's the little blurb from the tribe description:
*VENDORS*, if someone specifically asks for an item, feel free to let them know that you have the item they are looking for. But please keep posts in this regard TO THE SPECIFIC ITEM REQUESTED. This tribe is not designed as an advertisement and is not a flea market. There are many tribes where you are free to advertise your wares. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. Postings advertising your specific items or for your business in general are welcome in the LISTINGS section of this tribe. Thanks.

Thank you!!

Hill Tribe & Miao ...gauges? (x-post)

I love these wonderful silver jewelry styles! I have a question that may seem fairly obvious.....but I am going to ask it anyway.

Regarding the pieces that have "curliques" on the end that is inserted, I assume that your ear/septum/whatnot must match the bigger gauge of the curled end of the piece, rather than the smaller gauge area where the jewelry will actually rest once it's inserted?
Or is there some trick to inserting the jewelry where you don't have to have stretched lobes?

Examples of both "regular" and "curlique" ends are on this page if you want a visual:
www.organicjewelry.com/ethnicSEAsia.html

I just had to have some so I ordered a pair with "regular" ends on eBay yesterday.....and I would love to snag more!

Hello,
I want to make a tribal fusiony headdress, and want to incorporate some metal disks or medallions on the sides (like the ones the girls for The Indigo wear on their belts), but don't know where to find those or something similar. Anybody can help? Thank you

Thread/beading cowrie shells

I'm cross posting from the DIY tribe, hope it's ok!

I have found a ton of cowrie shells on a bunch of necklaces at the 2nd hand store. I took them apart, they were threaded with fishing line.
I was trying to restrand them on my fringe belt. Toward the inside lip/opening there is a hole where it was strung through on the necklace. I did not pay attention to where the strand of fishing line was going through simply because I figured "It's on a line, it's easy to thread" DUH! I can't fit a needle through the hole and in any direction to thread the darn things. I have some other shells that I am having trouble with too. They were strung...how come I'm too goofy to do it myself? The line I'm using is fishing line, but more of a thread like line.
I wanted to put some on a head piece and make some bracelets at some point too. Any ideas?

At least that's what I think they are. I received these in a shipment of bracelets and I'd like to keep them if I could figure out how to wear them! The photo shows a side view and a quarter view. From the top they look almost rectangular. How do I get these on my ankles? (Maybe they're just too small for me.) Any tricks to this?

When you dance, do your bracelets slide and 'clank' into one another? I have thin arms and have just recently started to wear multiple bracelets on each arm. However they slide on my arms and smack into one another. Is this usual???

I'm fine with replacing the wire myself as opposed to having a jeweler do it. These earrings are almost 2" in diameter and I would buy a new pair, but I can't find them anymore!!

Two different pieces of jewelry

1) a set of Masai man's armlet/band. It would be carved out of wood or ivory, and in the shape of 2 deep U's stuck together. rather thick, very unique looking

2) A tusk hair comb which is I think Thai. It would look like 2 tusks stuck together on top of a comb with particularly fine teeth. I believe they are usually part of a dowry

I haven't found either through the usual paths: Google, Ask, Ebay. Does anyone have better access to foreign NOT commercially made jewelry?

Hiya all,
I was chasing Fulani Earrings on the net today... (well BIG earrings in general really!) & I found Lautari's old thread about 'bead paradise' but it doesn't come up anymore

beadparadise.com/Fulani.html

So in case anyone is interested I then found this site

http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=3

& if you follow the menu to jewellery> & search for fulani earrings, not only do they have small earrings but they also offer a 'fulani xmas ornament' which is really just the big earrings (the ones w red thread on them) so I guess they might do if, like me, you can't find anything else??
Plus, of course, it's for a good cause!

If anyone else knows where I can find some big ones & even if possible in silver (rather than gold/brass) ...I would really appreciate it
sizing double flare earlets/tunnels?

i've heard both a) that if you have, say, 6g size holes that you can get 6g double flared earlets in, and b) that if you have 6g size holes that you will need 8g double flared earlets (because the flares are so much wider than the tunnel part of the jewelry).

i heard both these opinions from piercing industry pros, so i'm confused. which is it?

i'm looking for metal double flared earlets/tunnels that are not 1/2 inch long, like the ones i already have. they also must have the maximum open space possible in the middle, so that i can put hoops through them.

jewelry with a subtle flare shape doesn't work--i just had a brand-new pair pop out of my ears with the O-rings still in place. the front flares, which were tiny, slipped right out. but when i wear earlets with a wide, 90-degree flare on them, they stay in just fine.

thanks for any advice!

I have many coin and bead belts and now finally want to buy myself my first tribal bellydance belt. Ideally, I'm looking for one with big wooly tassels - not too many, but could drop to my knees? I remember seeing something I liked on ebay months ago - an australian seller me thinks, but have'nt seen anything like it since. Any advice for a novice???

I am allergic to alot of costume jewelry. But I loveeeeeeeeeeeee them. Anyone have any suggestions or know who sells nickle free or for sensitive skin?

Hi,
I love jewelry! Especially unique ethnic pieces that are hard to find because no one else has them. But my only problem is that I am allergic to most of it. Sometimes I can wear nickle-Free or surgical steal. I am ok with gold but I am not rich! LOL Plus I prefer silver tones over gold at times. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of any jewelry that is good for sensitive skin? I am stubborn so I still wear them even though I end up breaking out in a rash and suffering. But pain is beauty! LOL

Thanks

Thank you to the person or person's who suggested using mole skin on the inside of my bracelets to make them fit. I have a vintage 3 tiered Turkoman bracelet that I LOVE but since I have child size wrists, I cannot wear it for fear of it falling off. So finally, I went out and bought some mole skin...... after 2-3 layers of the stuff in the right places, I can now wear my beloved bracelet without the fear of it slipping off my arm!!! Yay!

Thank you.... thank you ..... thank you!!!!!

cord knotting how-to question

I've been on a quest for the longest time to figure out how to make the knots that they use in cord-wrapped jewelry from Rajasthan. The knots surround the components and keep them in place on the cord.

I've posted a photo in the gallery of an example. I can do the wrapping, but it's the knotting that has me stumped.

I've searched endlessly on the internet for instructions, but perhaps I'm just not using the correct words or the information just isn't out there. If you know how to do this and wouldn't mind sharing how to do it... or, if anyone has any books or web sites that they can recommend for the how-to technique... I would be most grateful!

Thanks much oh-knowledgable-and-wise jewelry lovers!

Agh! This is driving me crazy. I can't remember the name of a medieval style cloak closure. It is a pin and circle contraption that is used to hold clothing (mostly cloaks) together. It isn't a frog. I know I have seen it mentioned on tribe but when I did a search for cloak closures nothing familiar came up. HELP????

Of course I'm not talking about the really heavy stuff, I work in a hospital after all :)

Native American Passing for Kuchi discs?

Hi, everyone. I updated the Affordable Kuchi page tonight (http://www.nettally.com/mccaskn/kuchi.htm) after finding some sources for Native American dance rosettes that I think *might* be able to pass for kuchi beaded medallions (in the sunburst patterns and to an uninformed audience, anyway).

Since I've never actually even SEEN, much less handled, a real kuchi disc, though, I'd like y'all's opinions. Please look over the stores' merchandise and tell me what you think. Are the sunburst designs all right, or would the audience scream, "AIEEEEE! ! That's Navajo! " (or Shoshone or Pawnee or Apache or whatever)?

What size range are the real kuchi discs? These are 1 1/2" to 5".

Even if I find out the designs won't work because they're too inauthentic, these stores could still be useful for costumers wanting to outfit an entire troupe in identical medallions, or even for dancers desperately trying to find a matched pair.

Believe it or not, I even went online tonight looking for starburst beaded coasters. Didn't find any.
Composition of jewelry

How does one guesstimate the composition of one's jewelry? I am aware that most of my ethnic jewelry pieces are mostly some ecclectic mix of metals - and that's fine.

The other day, while using silver cleaner on a Turkoman pendant, I continued and cleaned a set of bangles, allegedly from Tibet. All pieces reacted nicely to the silver cleaner, they look very spiffy and shiny. Now I am wondering - what does that tell me about the metal composition of my jewelry?

Has anyone used this vendor, got any feedback for me, before I part with a lot of money!
I saw his website a few years back, so he has been around for a while............ His prices are just so GOOD! I am tempted!
I don't mind parting with the minimum amount as long as I get all the goods as described. If it is as it seems you should all check him out, especially for troupe ordering,
So what do you all think?.......................

Hello everyone,
Just joined this tribe a few minutes ago- don't know what took me so long! Anyway, I'll be in NYC in a couple months, and was wondering if anyone know of any good shopping for jewels and costuming pieces. I live in Hawaii and besides the internet and the occasional visiting vendor, there's not much out here. I'm hoping to stock up and take advantage of no shipping charges.
Thanks
Shanna

okay. This is *solid* silver. Really heavy. It's a viking 'box brooch', and it's really lovely. But what can I do with it? I suppose it will just be one of those decadent bits of stuff one has when you're not moving around, or something. What do you think? Here's the link

Does anyone know what the optimal size & type of tunnels for stretched ears should be used if one desires to wear groups of earrings through the tunnels? I find that my awesome huge tribal earrings pull on my delicate little lobes too much. I'm considering stretching my ears so I can wear tunnels to distribute the weight better and not ruin my ears. Eventually I'd like to wear groups of earrings through my tunnels.

Thanks!

Lead Concern & Does anyone know this seller?

I have a decent collection of Kuchi jewelry. I know it's made of "pot" metal and I'm not surprised when my skin turns color. That doesn't bug me. What I've been wondering about is the possibility of the jewelry containing lead or other hazardous material. Hate to be paranoid...but does anyone know anything on the subject?

Also, I've been getting into Miao jewelry. I am concerned about the low prices of these two sellers. In fact, I received responses so similar that I am wondering if they are the same seller.

The sellers are baiyige227 and zpandzp.

Just for Clarification - Sales Posts on This Tribe

Hi everyone. I just wanted to clarify a bit what I mean by no sales posts in threads. Sunnyblu mentioned wanting to know which eBay vendors people prefer if it was okay within the boundaries of this tribe.

Just for the record, I would be happy for you to discuss which vendors you prefer, why you like/dislike them, let people know which vendors sell which items, etc.

What I would prefer you not post in here are advertisements for specific items or advertisements for your own vending business. Specifically please do not post a picture with a price, list an item for sale in the threads, post a thread advertising your vending business, etc. My purpose behind this is that I would like for this tribe to be a serious discussion of tribal adornment and art, not a flea market. And there are other tribes designed just for selling these items. Here, these kinds of posts belong in the listings section. And please feel free to post them there. But kindly leave the "topics" as topics for discussion.

You've all been really good about this, but I just wanted everyone to know its okay to talk about which vendors you like. Thanks!

I posted 2 pics of this ring in our Tribe, with a brief description, but thought I'd ask here. I'm just curious about it, since it's new to me. I don't deal as much in Arabic jewelry. It was in a bag of Kuchi rings. We get Saudi (and other) coins used in chokers and stuff, but this was just an unusual one.
It has the Date palm and crossed swords of the Saudi emblem, but I couldn't find a referance for the wreath and crown. It's not valuable, just curious about it.

How do people like to clean and store their tribal jewelry? I imagine most appreciate the look of tarnish and suspect the authenticity of brighter pieces, but I don't enjoy getting dirty, sticky hands as I dig through bowls of kuchi jewelry at festivals or wear jewelry close to my skin for performances (keep meaning to attach a cloth band inside my metal choker to keep the green off my neck!). As I was putting all my pieces back in their little plastic bags after an all-day festival yesterday I wondered if there was something I could or should be doing to preserve them better and keep them cleaner.

Looking for the name of a jewelry artist

I was browsing the day away several months ago and I came across the website of a female jewelry artist who worked with ethnographic elements. For example she'd string together African beads with Miao earrings and make these amazing pieces. I loved her work and meant to go back to her site at some point, but then my computer crashed and I lost the bookmark. I cannot for the life of me find her site again.

I have no idea what her name is. I believe she's from the UK (not certain though). I think she is also a successful novelist. There was an interview with her somewhere online.

Can anyone help me identify this person?

Thanks!

Does anyone know where to get one of these? I've seen
them on ebay and the sterling silver ones are about $70,
they are the necklaces that Carolina Nericcio used to wear, with the
two rows of stacked diamonds, two on the top and
three on the bottom..

Thanks a lot!
Could anyone tell me where I can find the turquoise hanging from RB's ears. I recently started stretching my lobes and it was recommended that I hang something heavy from them during stretches and would prefer it to be attractive!

Speaking of stretched ears... faux gauging

I love the look of the earrings you can wear with stretched ears, but for several reasons (personal and professional) I don't want to gauge my lobes at all. I was pleased when a friend sent me a link to an Ebay seller (http://stores.ebay.com/BOHO-MAGIC_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm) who vends faux gauged earrings - the loops, hooks, and spirals I love, but they fasten through the earlobe with a hidden post instead of being the same thickeness all the way through.

I guess I don't really have a question... I know this is a good solution to my own taste and situation that still makes me sort of a poser, but I'm okay with that. *grins* I do want to know what other people think of this option, though. And I thought I'd let people know the option was there. If this belongs in the listing section, just tell me and I'll move it. I was mainly curious in hearing what people think of fake gauged earrings, though. Also, if anyone knows any other vendors who sell earrings like this in other designs, I'd love to know about them.

Tuareg Exhibit at the Stanford Museum in Palo Alto

I know everyone knows about this exhibit, but did you know that for the next two weekends, Tuareg silversmiths will be there from 11am until 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays, with exception of short breaks, doing silversmithing demos? They were working on some Tuareg crosses and beautiful silver band bracelets, forming them and engraving them. They were in their full traditional regalia. I held off my visit until today just to make sure I was able to catch them on one of the three weekends they were going to be here. I was also mindful to coordinate my visit with a docent led tour of the exhibit (free - at 2pm on certain days...and going on the weekend, you don't have to pay for parking for all those penny pinchers out there like me!) I myself will be going back next weekend to see it again. I tend to spend hours at the museums absorbing every little detail, and the people I go with usually just like to stroll through and leave within 45 minutes. I will take my camera next time. If you speak French, you will be able to chat with these fellows! Hurry, just a couple of more weeks left before it moves onto the Smithsonian! Oh, and as many of you know, the Stanford Museum is a free museum on top of all that!

HI, I just purchased a nice
Tibetan pendant with a stylized "Om"
in the middle and circling around the
perimeter of it is a line of human skulls..
I was told by the woman that Tibetans
honor the dead by using the skull in
its symbology..
Does anyone know anything more
on this topic, symbollically or otherwise?

Many thanks

True Indian Nath/Nose rings

Never made a post here but I can see that many here are versed in true tribal jewelry and where to find it.

Im in search of a "real" Indian Nath/Nose ring. A hoop peirced nose ring.

It seems to be so hard to find one that is not made of solid gold that costs over a grand! I'm not looking for something that expensive, and I'd LOVE to find one in silver!
My problem is I can find them, but clip ons! My nose is peirced, and other than putting in my clear plastic nose pin and then putting a clip on in front of it, I don't know what to do! (and besides that seems uncomfortable and painful! I tried it!)

Anyway I saw that some Hoop indian earrings are listed as "can be worn as a nose ring" but it just isnt the same cause all the ones ive found thus far are gold as well! Not that I hate gold, I just LOVE silver.

Anyone know of anyone selling these, or even making them? Any help would be wonderful!

I have a lovely bird-shaped ring that does not appear to be a high silver content. The bird's tail has broken off and I would like to get it repaired. I believe that the type of solder used needs to correspond to the metal composition (?). Has anyone had success finding a jeweler or metalsmith who can do this kind of repair? Any recommendations? Thanks!

While it'd be GREAT if they could find some real Kuchi, I'm not going to count on it.

Any advice? (Starting with how to say "old silver tribal jewelry" in Turkish? Or even "new tribal jewelry, not too expensive"?
What are the words for "headdress" and "dancing belt"? Or do the shopkeepers speak English? (If they don't, I guess I could print out some pictures from the Internet they can take with them).

Anything else they should look for, keeping in mind they're only going to the main shopping street(s); the cruise generally gives them 12 hours or less in each port?

They'll also be stopping in Santorini, Greece and Barcelona, Spain. Any specialties there they should keep an eye out for? (I'm already asking them for authentic Gypsy music on CD, since Barcelona has a HUGE Gypsy/Rom population).

Any tips to help them avoid being ripped off in the markets?

Any names/addresses of specific vendors? I'm also going to ask them for some evil eye jewelry, but supposedly those are *everywhere.*

Any help would be much appreciated.

Does anyone know what tribe her hoops are from, or if they have a specific name? I'm referencing the pic from her tribe site where she's holding her cutie pie babe. I drool over them everytime I sneak a peak and would love to find a similar pair!

my new tuareg hamza, and info on tuareg crosses

i just posted a pic in the tribe gallery of the tuareg hamza i just bought. it's an unusual design, by elhadji koumama, or someone in his family.
it's huge and luscious. i originally wasn't going to buy one of his, because i wanted the more traditional design that is simpler, (my shell and leather one finally became too delicate to wear), but this one was so unusual, because of the asymmetry of the design.

also, i started looking around on the internet for information about tuareg crosses, to find out where mine are from. i've determined that one is agadez style, and the other is iferouane, but the third one i'm having trouble with, because it's got elements of agadez, and of tahoua. the basic shape is similiar to an agadez cross i found online, but the cutouts are identical to a tahoua cross in a picture i saw. i'm not sure which elements determine the regional style of each cross. anybody here have any idea?

i spent a lot of time looking at crosses last night, but couldn't really find too much info.

Rare 19c Collection of Central Asian Tribal Silver

Hi Friends,
I think Turkoman people have the most beautiful Folk art from textiles to jewelery. I have posted pictures on tribe that comprise of my rarest private collection of Central Asian Old Tribal Silver jewelery pieces that are mostly from Turkoman Nomads. Most of these pieces are from early to mid 19 c.

According to the Ancient Turkoman belief the world was created when a huge moutain rose above the water and according to their belief this was the first place where the first man met the first women on earth. The most interesting thing about the Turkoman Folk tribal jewelery is that each piece has some meanings hidden within. This ancient concept of " World moutain " is depicted in Turkoman jewelery by a pendant that is a moutain shape on top (see the pendant lyinig inmiddle up of the picture I posted). These triangular pendants are called "TUMAR" in Turkoman language.Then comes heart shape pendants that are called "ASYK" in the Turkoman language. These gigantic size pendants are suppose to hang on the back of a Turkoman lady hang between her hair braids. The huge spikey bracelts in the picture are not Turkoman. These bracelets belong to Pashtoon Tribes of Norther Pakistan. here is the link to the photo;

hope everybody enjoyes the authentic Old tribal Silver from Central Asia. Its my humber effort try to educate friends about original tribal pieces and culture and introduce you to some of the amazing tribal cultures in central asia.

Any questions and quarries are welcomed.......I would try to answere them to the best of my khowledge.
