Hi guys, I was searching for tribes on ethnobotany (an academic discipline that I study) and came across this one. I would like to start a tribe whose focus is the broad field of ethnobotany-not only entheogens (but certainly including those as they are really important too). I would like to propose that you rename your tribe to something like entheogenic botany or something so we can have a tribe dedicated to the use of plants for food, medicine, and materials called ethnobotany.

(Who does she think she is?!!) Not trying to be pushy, just suggesting. If you switch I will create a tribe called ethnobotany so let me know!
Thanks,
Joan

I had similar thoughts. The term 'entheobotany' has been used as well as the name Joan suggests (entheogenic botany).
I'd probably be a member of both the ethnobotany and whatever other tribe one of you devises. 'Natural Alterants' could be another even wider applying choice for a name (and technically, fungi and lab made natural compounds aren't plants anyway and alot of people who might be interested but less informed might not even know what entheogens are, if Fawna wants to attract those people).
If it was me I'd even emphasize the legal entheogens (like Salvia, 5MEO, the entheogenic Amanitas, etc., ...) and then say something like, "And other natural mind/spirit alterants", as some people are uncomfortable with being directly associated with illegal activities, even if there are innocent and just interested for some reason. This is if Fawna'd like to have a larger discussion group. But there'd probably still be a fair amount if it emphasized what's in the description now (just look at some of the other illicit and semi-illicit substance specific tribe names). The psychonauts tribe is a good example of being inclusive. They specify they include all forms of inner exploration although most of their posts are on substance use (or about why they are concerned about posting on such things).

Why dont we just start more threads about economic botany, food plants, etc?
theres no need for a new tribe.
Here I'll start one. I have heard some anectdotal evidence of a perrenial cotton bush. Anybody know about this? Are all cotton sp. theoreticaly perrenial? I have seeds of several varieties but havent tried growing them out yet. Any tips?

well "Ethnobotany" on the web means PSYCHOACTIVE PLANTS, just like "sodomy" means anal sex in jail. It's become a given or a slang. Besides, there is a description of the tribe as you enter. Your just picking hairs. But Good point.... Ethnobotany means plants used by a culture. And sodomy is also means oral sex. peace out..enjoy all the above ;)

    How about Economic/ Ethno botany?
It's all good either way. If we get ethnobotanists in here, we'll have ethnobotanical threads.

I studied ethnobotany, plant systematics, pharmacology and cultural anthro in university. I've done research in the Brazilian amazon and pacific northwest. If there were a greater market for ethnobotanists to get good, ETHICAL posistions than I would certainly be working in the discipline. As it is, I am just as happy being an organic farmer. And no, ethnobotany does not = psychoactive plants, on the web or otherwise.
