There is Kahanu Gardens, part of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens. It is almost all of the way to Hana. If you are here for several weeks, you may want to plan on spending at least several days in Hana, particularly if you want to spend time in relatively undeveloped nature. (www.ntbg.org/gardens/kahanu) In more developed areas, there is the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, which has a section on medicinal plants. H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden on The Big Island is small but well informed on Hawaiian ethnobotanicals. The Bishop Museum also has books on the subject online. The Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden on Oahu is a beautiful place and they allow camping... Appearantly there's some Aya growing there (I know, NOT Hawaiian), but I couldn't find it during the small amount of time I was there.
