Hello Tribal Dancers
I am an ATS dancer from Canada and I will be in Paris for a few days at the end of October. Are there any stores in Paris that sell Tribal jewelry, textiles, or costuming items? Thank you for your help!
Field

Bonjour danseurs tribaux
Je suis un danseur d'ATS du Canada et je serai à Paris pendant quelques jours à l'extrémité octobre. Y a-t-il des magasins à Paris qui vendent les bijoux tribaux, les textiles, ou costumer des articles ? Merci de votre aide!

  • Hi
I don't know any store in Paris selling tribal dance stuff, I guess there must be some, even though France is late in tribal dance compared to the other European countries. But maybe you should check the famous flea markets of Paris, there you could find nice materials to create tribal pieces (lace, old jewelry etc)
What do you think, Parisian ladies ?
    • Oh yes, that's true.....

I didn't see a lot of belly dance-specific stores in Paris when I lived there (I know however, that there is a store near Notre Dame that sells Afghani pendants and jewelry...I never wrote down the name though, unfortunately), BUT, try going to the Marche aux Puces up by Porte de Clignoncourt. You'll be able to find some good textiles and antique-y things there...the front section is kind of a circus, but if you escape to the back you'll be able to find the really good stuff...there is even a man with a little tent who sells Kutchi pieces...they're pretty rare looking

If I think of anything else I'll let you know!
  • oh yeah, forgot to ask, are you going to see the Belly Dance Superstars? I think they're going to be in Paris at the time, right? And Sharon Kihara is teaching workshops in Nimes...
    • I won't arrive until the morning of Thursday October 29th, so I will miss the BDSS show. I do plan on dropping in to an ATS class at the RIDC studio on Boulevard de Clichy, taught by Etoile, on Friday night. I'm quite excited about that!
Actually, we will be staying close to Notre-Dame. Our apartment is on St Severin in the Latin Quarter. Would the kuchi jewelry place be in that area or on the other side of the river, in Marais? We are planning on just walking around a lot so maybe we'll stumble upon it if we're in the right area! I will have to look up the address for the other place that was mentioned, too.
Thanks very much for the information!
      • it's definitely on the notre dame side, very close to notre dame in fact, i just can't for the life of me think of where it was exactly though....good luck, and have fun!
        • Hi Field,
Happy to meet you soon ;o)
Unfortunaely, you won't find any tribal shop in France but you might find some jewelry (in silver = expensive).
Do not forget your zils for your class (and be nice with the french ATS beginers!!!) :o)))
          Julie
          • Hi Field,
Hope you enjoy your french ATS class. ;o)
            Go back to Toronto safe.
            Julie
            • Hi Julie

I enjoyed your class very much! You give very clear instruction for your students and even though I speak very little French I was able to understand the entire class completely! (I use an online translator for the French version of my messages.) Please tell your students it was a pleasure to dance with them. Even though they are beginners, just keep practicing and before they know it they will be very good dancers! They are lucky to have a very good teacher! I hope that more and more people begin ATS classes with you as the dance style becomes more popular in France. Good luck with your BellyFusions 2010, it looks like it will be an amazing show!

        • I had a geat time in Paris!
I found some lovely tribal jewelry at a place called Dam Dom at 6, place du Petit Pont. We had just dropped our bags at our apartment and were heading to Notre Dame when I walked past the store! It was officially the first place I visited in Paris! There was quite a nice assortment of good quality silver pieces. Lots of rings, earrings and some pendants. I bought one of the Nigerian Croix du Sud they had on display. They ranged from 18.50€ to 44.00€ each. I also bought a huge pair of tribl earrings in the exact style I've been looking for! There were a couple bracelets from India and aboout 5 beautiful Turkoman ones that were anywhere from 95.00€ to 200.00€. There were some really nice Taureg necklaces that I loved! As tempting as they were I didn't even look at the prices because I already have a few of them that I bought while I was in Marrakech. Plus, I am planning to go back to Morocco for my ATS dance intensive (www.ATSdanceholiday.com) so I'll be brining some back with me then.
There is one more shop on Petit Pont about a block further south of Dam Dom, which is called Kutchi. It has a stunning selection of very high end tribal items. The prices were way more than the average dancer could afford for costuming! There was a massive two fingered ring from Khasakstan for 450.00€ I tried on just for fun. Beautiful things but certainly only for collectors!
