I hope people does post to this. I am also planning to move to Oregon this year but have not decided on the exact city. I know what I would love to live around but so far I see it almost all over Oregon. Mountains, lakes, stream, and ocean. I just want to be in a place where I can enjoy some PRIVACY, but that also depends on what the city has to offer.

I can't speak specifically to the resources that would most help a single mother. However I can tell you that Eugene is full of amazing communities. Though the entire northwest, including Oregon, tends to be a very friendly relaxed place, to me Eugene seems particularly so. I've never been to a place where you can stop to talk to strangers on the street, and they seem more than happy to make friendly conversation, going so far as to invite you to their homes for potlucks, or family dinners. What's more, i don't feel uncomfortable taking them up on the offers.
Beyond that eugene is a beautiful city (as long as you focus on the neighborhoods and not the business areas). I think every spring and summer I'm here I'm more surprised by the sheer volume of flowers and fruits available. It's only 45 minutes from the coast, and then 45 minutes in the other direction you're in the heart of the casscades, so outdoor oportunities abound. If you live in the city, its extroardinarily easy to ride your bike (or the bus when it's rainging) across town, or even out into the surrounding small towns.
i don't know what else to say really. Eugene isn't for everyone. If you want to raise your children conservatively as republicans, it could be more difficult here than other places, for that you may want to go over the mountains to central or Eastern Oregon. If you're down with the fair family vibe though, Eugene is about as nice aplace as you can find.
Sorry for ranting, obviously I enjoy living here.

Hi Doe, I'm thinking of moving to Eugene too. :) I would like to get out of the Red Midwest and move to the Blue West.

      i agree with liliy-
eugene is a magical city- there are some areas of town that you may not want to raise a child in, but most of the others are wonderful!!!!! i now 28, slill live in the house i was born in here in south eugene. my mother wanted to sell the house and as far back as i can remember i threw fits and couldn't imagine living anywhere else. i now raise my child here and still love it!!!! i lived in houston and dallas texas with my brother for a year when i was in high school and couldn't wait to get back to the comfort of the woods, people and events eugene has to offer. we in eugene are really like a huge family. some of us argue and some of us whine about life, but most of us have been all over the world and have come back becuse no matter how much fun or experiences we've seen in the rest of the world we have a nagging in our souls to return to our "motherland". i know i may sound like a granola, but i guess i am.- and that's not a bad thing if you've ever had the pleasure to meet one! look at sites on the web about eugene and a map and you will see we are the jewel of the northwest. we are even called the emerald city! it's hard not to rant about eugene, it's the greatest city i've ever been to and i've traveled alot. i was borm here and will die here under a beutiful fir tree.
      -blessings and protection-

I seriously love Oregon, in particular I love western Oregon. I'd recommend either trying Eugene or Cottage Grove, in my opinion. Cottage Grove is a smaller town, I live in it, and it's about 20-30 mins south of Eugene. But, either place is way nice. I love it here, and wouldn't wanna live anywhere else. The place is magical.
