Tuesday the 9th: 7 - 9
Ud exercises / Got Makam? Turkish Music Reading
Ud exercises from Master Turkish Udist Necati Celik presented by David.
and
The classical Turkish and Arabic written music provides a literal map for people who wish to play taksim(melodic solos), so we'll talk about that and how to use it to learn the art of taksim.Turkish music is written a bit differently from western music and we'll discuss that as well. Non Ud playing students can come for the 8-9 hour only for the music class.
Wednesday June 10th: 7- 9
Focus on Fundamental Technique : Darbuka, Riq, Frame Drum, Davul
We'll cover Rhythm Work, Technique, Tone, Practicing
This is a Refinement Class for Beginner to Intermediate - Suggested as preparation for those taking the Thursday and Weekend classes.
Thursday June 11th: 7 - 9
Intro to "Separation of the Senses" / Beat with Solo Over the Top for Darbuka, Frame Drum
Play Rhythm and Solo at once!! Step by Step Method taught with Rhythms Maksoum and Malfouf
Beginner and Intermediate Level.
Saturday June 13th 1 - 3
Techniques for General Darbuka Solo Work
Essentials of Modern Arabic style and Turkish "split technique" with tons of ideas for any Solo Situation.
Also we can have a 'Q and A' about drumming in general.
Intermediate, Advanced. Beginner with percussion background okay.
Sunday June 14th : 2 - 4
Turkish Roman Classics: 9, 8 and 2 Beat Rhythms for All Drums
Rhythms and Variations for Roman 9/8's , Chiftetelli's and Malfouf - All Levels
PLUS From 4 to 5 pm we will join Delpha's Roman Dance Class to jam and Delpha and David will give a short presentation and performance.

6 hours - $55

All ten?! - $70
Sunday class will be held at Euphoria Studios - 1235 SE Division St. - Portland - 503.240.1997
All other classes will be held at a home in NE Portland - Class size is limited.

* Darbuka = Doumbek = Egyptian Tablah = Derbekki = Goblet Drum
* Students will be given basic sheets with exercises and rhythms but should come prepared to write additional notes during class.
* Please arrive 10/15 minutes prior to class.
* Classes are likely to run a bit long...
* No audio or video recording please.

David Reihs is a life long musician currently living in Istanbul learning Turkish musical arts. He is primarily a percussionist but has a melodic background which covers many genre's. David has been privileged to learn from many of the worlds top Middle Eastern Musicians including Souhail Kaspar, Faisal Zedan, Karim Nagi, Mehmet and Hamdi Akatay, Yinon Muallem and Necati Celik.

So many people have wondered whether Delpha and I are moving back to PDX. At this time we are only visiting but have plans to return by summer 2010. dhavir productions has many exciting new projects happening and I'll tell you more about all that soon.
