Kara Nomadica is a Middle-Eastern fusion band with a sound inspired by traditional Arabic and Turkish rhythms and maqamat (scales) as well as modern industrial/techno music. Its members have well over a century of combined musical experience.

The members of Kara Nomadica play a vast array of traditional instruments, including oud, saz, darabuka, doumbek, riq, frame drum, dholla, davul, ney, and mizmar, and didjeridoo…all solidly anchored in the 21st century by the fretless bass guitar. These ancient, and not-so-ancient, instruments blend to give the band’s original compositions a truly unique synergy, while breathing fresh life into their large repertoire of traditional songs from Turkey and the Arab world.

Kara Nomadica’s goal is to bring its exotic Middle-Eastern fusion sound to a broad spectrum of music lovers, while specifically focusing on supporting the grace and beauty of the international bellydance community. To this end, Kara Nomadica has recently been inspiring thousands of dancers and listeners at numerous bellydance shows, haflas, arts festivals, World Music and Dance showcases, and charity benefits throughout Northern Colorado, garnering rave reviews.

Personally, my favorite track isn't featured on the sight, but all their music I've heard so far is beautiful. I'm staying with the Saz and the Oud players, Lawrence and Mark and both have been extremely kind to me thus far. Mark has been pulling out all sorts of different flavored songs from around the middle east and singing/playing them for me, and Lawrence has been teaching me to Play the Saz a little bit [I've been exploring it on my own mostly]. Going to see them play at the Summertime Sideshow Circkus in Golden, CO this saturday, where Princess Farhana, Tribe Marrakesh and others will be performing as well, should be fun!

If you havn't heard yet, Kristnh, kick-butt drummer/dancer extraordinaire is teaching a new class; the following is her announcement:

"Hey everyone, Im proud to announce a new class at Euphoria! Starting tuesday June 10th I will be teaching a technique class in Arabic style dumbek and zills! This is a class for drummers AND dancers. We will be covering basic music theory, hand positions and technique for dumbek, commonly used rhythms in Middle Eastern music and corresponding zill patterns.

Appropriate for all beginners, drummers will learn proper technique for a solid foundation, dancers will learn to identify rhythms and play appropriate zill patterns. Change the way you hear music forever! "

The one and only Hadia - in Portland!

The Hadia weekend event kicks off with a * benefit show on Friday night, June 13th, 2008. Doors open to the public at 7:00, show starts at 7:30. Show and workshop location: Euphoria Studios, 1235 SE Division St # 106, Portland, OR 97202. Ticket prices for the show are as follows: $18 at the door, $14 if purchased before June 3rd or $10 if you register for both workshops.

The line up! Hadia, Janikea, Salome, Kendra, Claudia, Luminessa and *SEED dancers. Professional performance of Egyptian raqs sharqi, American Oriental, Tribal style and more. Spinning by the smokin' hot DJ Leyla! Beer, wine, soda and water will be available as will an open floor (time permitting) at shows end.

The Workshops

Saturday the 14th, from 12 to 5pm, Hadia will teach a workshop on Body Logic, Oriental Technique, and Drum Solo technique: improvising with precision & choreography.

Sunday the 15th, from 11 to 4pm, Hadia will teach a workshop on Arabic Musicality: a study of three classic, orchestrated compositions. The content will consist of phrasing, maqams, rhythm's, instrument identification and movements from Hadia's vast repertoire.

One workshop: $85 at the door or $75 if purchased before June 3, 2008.

This is not a festival per se, it's an intensive. Or immersion rather.. where you'll get individualized attention and shared group experience deepening over the course of 3- or 5 days droppin into the dance together! Come immerse yourself in the culture, the music, the bay area bohemian bellydance underworld that is shaping the tribal fusion explosion world wide. Experience where it all began. Learn from some of the pioneers in the field, meet the musicians too, who are shaping the culture and dance! , Dive in, and see how it inspires YOU! In addition to lots of technique and dance training, there are special workshops/lectures on context, history, evolution of tribal fusion bellydance, Core Yoga specifically for dancers, hang out at our local hot spots, workshops on costuming, aesthetic, creating true fusion choreography, and developing your own style, panel discussions on the collaboration between dancers and musicians, with some of your favorite musicians and dancers shaping the art form, lots of performances, and yes, even vending! by some of the bay area's hottest designers...

Skirt work with group improvisation!!!

Hey ladies,
Just wanted to let you all know for the next few weeks my Wednesday night "Cues and Transitions" class will be focusing on group improvisation with skirt work!
Skirts can be playful or passionate, strong or saucy- a truly versatile prop.
I'll teach you some skirt-friendly combinations, and we'll make some up together in class. Get comfy with that big beautiful skirt you have hiding in your closet-it's full of possibilities!
I'll have some skirts to share but please bring your own if you have one, preferably 10 yard hem and up.

Wednesdays 8-9 at Euphoria Studios. Intermediate level class
$12 drop-ins welcome. Class cards makes it cheaper, you know the drill....

Euphoria Studios presents 2008 Grammy Award Nominee -

SOUHAIL KASPAR!

Master percussionist Souhail Kaspar is known for his ability to improvise & embellish the rhythmic patterns of Arabic music, as well as his knowledge of ethnic musical history. Born in Lebanon and trained at the Conservatory of Traditional Arabic Music in Aleppo, he has performed with American artists such as Sting and jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, and with Arabic superstars such as Sabah, Feiruz, George Wassouf and Legendary composer & singer Farid el-Atrash, among many others. His recording credits include soundtracks for the movies The Prince of Egypt, Sinbad, and Hidalgo and as a guest percussionist with the cutting-edge Kronos Quartet. Since the late 1970s, he has also appeared with famed ethnomusicologist Dr. Ali Jihad Racy at a wide variety of cultural events and major concert halls. Mr. Kaspar is currently performing and recording in Los Angeles, and he teaches master classes & workshops throughout the US. His most recent recording is the acclaimed "Kahaliji" CD, a collection of popular songs from the Arabian Gulf. Mr. Kaspar is a recipient of a Durfee Music Fellowship given to master musicians and teachers.

March 22/23 Workshops:
Drum Solo for Dancers - Souhail coaches dancers how to work with drummers to perform drum solos. He has the wonderful ability to train dancers to respond to the music using movements appropriate to the sounds the dancer hears. This is not a choreography class.
Sat, March 22nd, 12-2pm

Basics of Egyptian Style Doumbek - This class introduces the correct techniques for Classical Egyptian style Doumbek and rhythms. Students can expect to have their hand positions and playing style corrected.
Sat, March 22nd, 2:30-4:30pm

Intermediate / Advanced Egyptian Doumbek - Students will learn more advanced techniques, drills to improve speed while maintaining good technique, & more rhythms. Good technique is essential to playing, so even advanced students should take the fundamentals class first to learn his style.
Sun, March 23rd, 12-2pm

a cushy bus to Medfest in Seattle for Saturday July 19, 2008. Pick-up would be from a central location in Portland leaving at around 9am and returning from Seattle around 9pm that evening. Cost depends on the number of people going, but should be $35-65 per person round trip.

Hi!
I'm currently on a break from touring with BDSS until the spring. My partner and I bought an old VW and decided to head to Mexico for some sun.
sooo, we got as far as Eugene from Vancouver Island and had to stop here till friday to get an engine rebuild..ach.
I got a couple of days to mooch about in Eugene and wondered if there were any Belly dance related funs to be had in the area.
I'd be well up for teaching if anyone was interested, or if anyone just wants to come out and play?

Lara will demystify Turkish 9/8 rhythms common to Karsilama, Turkish folk music and the Gypsy (Rom) genre. Bring your darbuka, zills, davul, castanets, riqq or anything percussive. All levels welcome and drum patterns provided!

Kristnh will share iconography and dance stylings of the Turkish Roma. Learn a more authentic and dynamic way to move to variations of the 9/8, and the elusive 'turkish snap'.

Introducing GiraSol (Sunflower), a new permaculture settlement breaking ground in November 2007. We invite you to be a part of this amazing experience by participating in a nine-day course designed to bring you competency in Permaculture and Earthen Building Methods.

Imagine yourself as part of that community…Living. Building. Playing.

This nine-day intensive design/build studio will combine natural building techniques (cobb, adobe, stone, straw/clay, passive/active heating systems) with presentations, discussions, exercises, and fun field trips.

GiraSol’s ground-breaking workshop will provide training in regenerative village design, natural construction and permaculture theory while establishing the GiraSol information center through hands-on work. The design will integrate a century-old adobe structure into a whimsical new building, seemingly sprung from the canvas of a Maxfield Parrish painting.

Led by mOceaN (Mark Lakeman), Lydia Doleman and Martin Shulke of Portland’s City Repair Project, the GiraSol Intensive will take place from 10/27/07 to 11/04/07. We will be camping as a group in the beautiful Baja desert, and all meals will be provided.

Basics

Location: GiraSol is a 200-acre parcel situated in Valle de las Palmas (Valley of the Palms), about 20 miles south of the U.S./Mexico Border and 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean between the major cities of Tijuana, Ensenada & Tecate. This new Center is on a vast tract of beautiful land in the valley, along a road from Ensenada to Tecate which is currently under construction. This road will bring unprecedented real estate development to this relatively undisturbed agrarian area. GiraSol strives to be a jewel in the Baja landscape by providing an example of sustainable community design.

Course Description: You will receive training AND become competent in the following areas:

1. regenerative village design and earthen building methods
2. biomass accumulation and use, plastering
3. roof framing
4. integrated landscaping
5. water catchment, re-use, and finishing methods.

Construction will be accompanied by discussions of the ecological features and benefits of each building phase. Through two field trips we will explore the local community by travelling to a wildlife preserve and taking part in Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

*Biomass piece will include the whole process — from mulching to retain rainwater
to improved soil structure resulting in increased food potentials.

A Native Bulgarian, Rumen Shopov is master of the tambura, bouzouki, and percussion, as well as an accomplished singer. Rumen was concertmaster of the Nevrokop Folk Ensemble for over 20 years. Currently he leads the Bay area's "Okestar Sali", and plays percussion for "Edessa", "Ziyia" & "Kitka". Rumen & his son Angel recently released a CD produced by Voice of Roma, entitled "Soul of the Mahala". The CD is wonderful and his classes are fantastic!

Then make your way to Aphelion (3/3/07) at the new Watershed building to meet up with Burning Man theme camps and conclaves, other projects, groups and businesses, and anyone else who shows up to “fly their banner.” This is also a party, complete with dj’s, dancing, merriment and madness. Oh yeah, and alcohol. And lots of cool people from Seattle and other parts of the West Coast. And fire. Oh, yeah!

This affects us as the Oregon Conclave because this space, and the 30’ wide dead end street it sits on, have been offered to us for Conclave meetings and rehearsals in exchange for participation from the community. Our part at Aphelion is to discuss fire at the new building, and begin planning on how we want to handle the fire department in relation to this building.

Oh wow. See, this is what I get for tooling around on the internet at work =P
Due to a financial nightmare stemming from an ID theft, I had to axe all of my hobbies and assorted after-work activities.
I think not being able to come to dance classes at Euphoria anymore was the hardest of them all, to be honest.
It's been a year and a half. Can't wait for the foot cramps! Woohoo!
I surrendered my truck a week ago, couldn't rationalize spending $600 a month on a vehicle I no longer drove.
That gives me a little more wiggle room to start paying off other debts from this mess, plus actually, ya know, get out of the house now and then.
So after some prodding from a friend, I decided to start with the Thursday cycle, tonight.
I'm going to miss Jane as a teacher terribly, but I'll give Tiffany a go =) Just no way I can get there bussing it by 6 =(
I had no idea this tribe was even here, until today after double and triple checking to make sure class wasn't canceled and to get my directions right.
Mother has a funny way of doing things.

And I've missed you guys =)

Fall changes for Egyptian Cabaret

Fall is a time for change isn't it? Our beloved Magidah is leaving us & moving on to new adventures. We wish her well & thank her for her wonderful energy she has shared with us!
Euphoria now has not 1 but 2 new incredible Egyptian Cabaret instructors - please welcome: Cassiopeia & Lilah Perry!
These ladies are not only fantastic dancers & very nice humans, but excellent instructors as well. Please check out their Egyptian Cabaret classes at www.euphoriastudios.net & welcome them to our community!
(Our schedule remains the same, Cassiopeia & Lilah start the week of Sept 19th.)

Cassiopeia has been winning awards for quite some time as both a soloist and for her troupe's direction. She is warm & friendly, & an enthusiastic and supportive instructor who's passion for teaching shows! Along with her personality, she offers Euphoria students her meticulous technical expertise. (She's great!) She has plenty of awards from past events, her most recent being the 1st place in the Onyx catagory of the 2005 MED&CA competition.

Lilah Perry's dance career has taken her to Morroco & Turkey as well as Jordan & Egypt where she worked professionally as a dancer from 2003-2004. She has studied w/ Raqia Hassan, & Dina, and her dancing shows a true expression of Egyptian music. Lilah is a
former teacher at Cassandra's school, as well as a member of her troupe Jawahire. She's been dancing for 10 years, & is a rolfer, giving her a focus on good posture & alignment.
