I would love to charter a Luxury Bus, book a hotel and..

travel to 2010 Rakkasah in Vallejo CA. The event is usually held the second weekend of March. By luxury I mean restroom, air conditioning, dvd, tinted windows, not having to drive, etc..

There would be plenty of room to take along 50 bellydancers!

Round trip, 2 nights shared hotel room, event admission is approx $200.
Round trip only is approx $125.

We'd be leaving from Portland. It would be an easy train ride for Seattle bellydancers. We'd even be willing to stop at Eugene and Medford to pick up additional bellydancers!

Delpha Reihs has been living in Istanbul and studying Roman dance since 2006. She studies with legendary Romany teacher, Reyhan Tuzsuz. Come and get a taste of the street dancing culture of Istanbul's Roman weddings and celebrations.

The workshop is $30 and will include a jam session with drummers as well as a presentation, Q and A, and performance by Delpha and her husband David at the end. This workshop is for BOTH MEN AND WOMEN - the styles are similar in footwork and Delpha can get you boys out there moving along as well !

The classical Turkish and Arabic written music provides a literal map for people who wish to play taksim(melodic solos), so we'll talk about that and how to use it to learn the art of taksim.Turkish music is written a bit differently from western music and we'll discuss that as well. Non Ud playing students can come for the 8-9 hour only for the music class.

Wednesday June 10th: 7- 9
Focus on Fundamental Technique : Darbuka, Riq, Frame Drum, Davul
We'll cover Rhythm Work, Technique, Tone, Practicing
This is a Refinement Class for Beginner to Intermediate - Suggested as preparation for those taking the Thursday and Weekend classes.

Turkish Roman Classics: 9, 8 and 2 Beat Rhythms for All Drums

PLUS From 4 to 5 pm we will join Delpha's Roman Dance Class to jam and Delpha and David will give a short presentation and performance.

David Reihs is a life long musician currently living in Istanbul learning Turkish musical arts. He is primarily a percussionist but has a melodic background which covers many genre's. David has been privileged to learn from many of the worlds top Middle Eastern Musicians including Souhail Kaspar, Faisal Zedan, Karim Nagi, Mehmet and Hamdi Akatay, Yinon Muallem and Necati Celik.

Community in Change

I believe we are being pushed to create something better, and by necessity structure must be abandoned for a time. Creativity and chaos shall flourish, but it may not be what you expect.

I had this interesting conversation with my friend Thomas a few days ago that has sparked (and resparked in some ways) thinking about the future, and where we are heading as a culture.

I've been thinking about this really since I was in elementary school, but it a slightly different context. I was brought up with this idea that there would be war. As I see the things happening around us in these times, I am again reminded of this idea. That a dark period is coming upon us, that if society doesn't collapse structure will at least be tossed aside and there will be chaos...I feared this idea for a really long time, but when I brought it up to my shamanism teacher one day she said something that really began to change the way I think about all situations, and particularly this thing that seems to be impending on so many people's minds.

She told me to think positive. Simple as that. By empowering the idea that this horrible thing is going to happen, by constantly worrying about it you make it more likely to occur, so believe and put positive energy into something better happening.

Well, I do hold to that, and try to be as positive as I can, but I can't ignore completely the things happening here and now. So here is where this conversation I had a few days ago comes in. I was able to formulate this thought regarding creativity and chaos where this 'dark period' is concerned, and it surprises me because my thoughts on the subject of chaos have changed so much recently. We had been talking about structure, and I see that the structure of our society is not functioning like a well oiled machine, especially at the level of the people. We have so much soul loss and pain as a society, such careless attitudes about the earth, and love, and human relations, and such a lack of spiritual integrity. This is why I think the changes I see coming are very likely and relevant to happen. There seems to be a...repopularizing of earth-connected, closely animistic-related ideas and spirituality. I have been growing more aware of this since I started studying shamanism and it rings very true for me. Modern culture has so far removed itself from connection with Spirit and Earth, which up to very recent centuries had always been integrated in our everyday lives and actions. We are missing an essential piece of our souls/ourselves, and so it is natural that people are attempting to reclaim this. (Through whatever form, Spirit makes sense to them). The other side I see is regarding creativity, true, unbound creative expression, even beyond the superfluous title "art". Thomas brought up a good point to me, that in order to have structure, a certain amount of freedom and creativity must be relinquished. Well, to have freedom and creativity, structure must be...reconsidered. The way we tend to think of structure is so square, and stolid...it has a foundation, and it doesn’t move, it isn't flexible, and it doesn't change well. All of these things are what pure creativity and chaos are about, and are really very important to be in touch with (just as a certain amount of structure is). What I see happening in this destructuring/destabilizing of our economy/culture, a chance for art and spirituality, which are full of spinning, twisting, curvy, changing, flexible and moving energy to really become important, and restructure our society in a way. Chaos will never set it solid like the foundational structure we think of with government (foundational like my picture earlier-square, cement, solid kind of foundation), but I can see where we need to be shaken up a little, test our own flexibility.

I think this will also make it essential to be more connected with our communities (whatever form those may take for each subculture/family/etc)...to have something to rely on, and have a place where the things you bring to the community are valued. This gives us a reason and a place to validate the need for our own personal creativity because there is someone to appreciate it, and find use from it. This is a lesson I learned from Sobonfu Some, of the Dagra Tribe in Africa. She was talking about community, and how in their beliefs, everyone is born with a specific intention/purpose to fulfill, and it close knit communities they are able to give what they have that is unique. In our culture, that is so large and so individualistic, yet sheep-like...there aren’t places for certain individual talents/skills/views that those people necessarily need to share in order to be fulfilled.

So I want to invite and perpetuate the idea that we as a family, friends, community can support and will be there for everyone. Invite people into the community, think positive, and explore your individual contributions of creativity, they may serve to support you soon, if not financially-emotionally. They are essential for you, and they are essential for everyone around you, If you do not share with the community and the world, there will be less light to benefit you and we will have missed out on an important experience for building relationships, and positive energy.

Kal are a young band, rock'n'roll in attitude, fuelled on dance beats
and rooted in the Balkan blues. In their wit, imagination, ability to
throw disparate sounds together and refusal to play by "folkloric"
rules Kal mark themselves as both part of Balkan Gypsy tradition and
21st Century Roma cultural activists. The identity Kal carry forward
is racially proud yet ethnically inclusive, forward looking while
embracing the treasure of the last thousand years of lungo drom (long
road), a culture determined to operate as equals in the ever evolving
Nu-Europe we all share. While our post-modern, polyglot times may
find employing terms like "commitment" and "mission" unfashionable
Kal are a band who aim to make a difference. Kal the word is Romani
for "black" were formed by the Ristic brothers, Dushan and Dragan,
to confront the prejudices and clichés the Roma face. Dragan, a
theatre producer who has set up Romani theatre groups in Budapest and
Belgrade, and Dushan, a painter, aimed to use Kal to blend influences
from traditional Balkan Gypsy music with the contemporary music they
heard whilst living in Belgrade and Budapest.

Come see the innovative NeoTribal Bellydance troupe, Mandala, Euphoria Studio's resident troupe perform at Mississippi Pizza Pub in north Portland, OR. Mississippi is a great pizza place (including delicious vegan pizza!) with a lovely friendly atmosphere, located at 3552 N Mississippi Ave. The show starts at 6:30 pm and is all ages. The fund raiser is on Saturday the 16th of August (FULL MOON!!) st 7 pm. at Yoga Union located at 2043 SE 50th in SE Portland ( about 50th and Harrison, between Hawthorne and Division.) Sliding scale donation $10-20. There will be auctions, raffles, a fashion show and performances by ME (Carlisa) and SEEDs of Euphoria! This is also a great event for networking, so if you offer a service that may be geared towards women or wellness, bring your card and meet some new people! Kara Nomadica is a Middle-Eastern fusion band with a sound inspired by traditional Arabic and Turkish rhythms and maqamat (scales) as well as modern industrial/techno music. Its members have well over a century of combined musical experience.

The members of Kara Nomadica play a vast array of traditional instruments, including oud, saz, darabuka, doumbek, riq, frame drum, dholla, davul, ney, and mizmar, and didjeridoo…all solidly anchored in the 21st century by the fretless bass guitar. Personally, my favorite track isn't featured on the sight, but all their music I've heard so far is beautiful. I'm staying with the Saz and the Oud players, Lawrence and Mark and both have been extremely kind to me thus far. Mark has been pulling out all sorts of different flavored songs from around the middle east and singing/playing them for me, and Lawrence has been teaching me to Play the Saz a little bit [I've been exploring it on my own mostly]. Going to see them play at the Summertime Sideshow Circkus in Golden, CO this saturday, where Princess Farhana, Tribe Marrakesh and others will be performing as well, should be fun!

"Hey everyone, Im proud to announce a new class at Euphoria! Starting tuesday June 10th I will be teaching a technique class in Arabic style dumbek and zills! This is a class for drummers AND dancers. We will be covering basic music theory, hand positions and technique for dumbek, commonly used rhythms in Middle Eastern music and corresponding zill patterns.

The Hadia weekend event kicks off with a * benefit show on Friday night, June 13th, 2008. Doors open to the public at 7:00, show starts at 7:30. Show and workshop location: Euphoria Studios, 1235 SE Division St # 106, Portland, OR 97202. Ticket prices for the show are as follows: $18 at the door, $14 if purchased before June 3rd or $10 if you register for both workshops.

The line up! Hadia, Janikea, Salome, Kendra, Claudia, Luminessa and *SEED dancers. Professional performance of Egyptian raqs sharqi, American Oriental, Tribal style and more. Spinning by the smokin' hot DJ Leyla! Beer, wine, soda and water will be available as will an open floor (time permitting) at shows end.

The Workshops

Saturday the 14th, from 12 to 5pm, Hadia will teach a workshop on Body Logic, Oriental Technique, and Drum Solo technique: improvising with precision & choreography.

Sunday the 15th, from 11 to 4pm, Hadia will teach a workshop on Arabic Musicality: a study of three classic, orchestrated compositions. The content will consist of phrasing, maqams, rhythm's, instrument identification and movements from Hadia's vast repertoire.

Hey ladies,
Just wanted to let you all know for the next few weeks my Wednesday night "Cues and Transitions" class will be focusing on group improvisation with skirt work!
Skirts can be playful or passionate, strong or saucy- a truly versatile prop.
I'll teach you some skirt-friendly combinations, and we'll make some up together in class. Get comfy with that big beautiful skirt you have hiding in your closet-it's full of possibilities!
I'll have some skirts to share but please bring your own if you have one, preferably 10 yard hem and up.

Wednesdays 8-9 at Euphoria Studios. Intermediate level class

Euphoria Studios presents 2008 Grammy Award Nominee -

SOUHAIL KASPAR!

Master percussionist Souhail Kaspar is known for his ability to improvise & embellish the rhythmic patterns of Arabic music, as well as his knowledge of ethnic musical history. Born in Lebanon and trained at the Conservatory of Traditional Arabic Music in Aleppo, he has performed with American artists such as Sting and jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, and with Arabic superstars such as Sabah, Feiruz, George Wassouf and Legendary composer & singer Farid el-Atrash, among many others. His recording credits include soundtracks for the movies The Prince of Egypt, Sinbad, and Hidalgo and as a guest percussionist with the cutting-edge Kronos Quartet. Since the late 1970s, he has also appeared with famed ethnomusicologist Dr. Ali Jihad Racy at a wide variety of cultural events and major concert halls. Mr. Kaspar is currently performing and recording in Los Angeles, and he teaches master classes & workshops throughout the US. His most recent recording is the acclaimed "Kahaliji" CD, a collection of popular songs from the Arabian Gulf. Mr. Kaspar is a recipient of a Durfee Music Fellowship given to master musicians and teachers.

March 22/23 Workshops:
Drum Solo for Dancers - Souhail coaches dancers how to work with drummers to perform drum solos. He has the wonderful ability to train dancers to respond to the music using movements appropriate to the sounds the dancer hears. This is not a choreography class.

Basics of Egyptian Style Doumbek - This class introduces the correct techniques for Classical Egyptian style Doumbek and rhythms. Students can expect to have their hand positions and playing style corrected.
Sat, March 22nd, 2:30-4:30pm

Intermediate / Advanced Egyptian Doumbek - Students will learn more advanced techniques, drills to improve speed while maintaining good technique, & more rhythms. Good technique is essential to playing, so even advanced students should take the fundamentals class first to learn his style.

Hi!
I'm currently on a break from touring with BDSS until the spring. My partner and I bought an old VW and decided to head to Mexico for some sun.
sooo, we got as far as Eugene from Vancouver Island and had to stop here till friday to get an engine rebuild..ach.
I got a couple of days to mooch about in Eugene and wondered if there were any Belly dance related funs to be had in the area.

This nine-day intensive design/build studio will combine natural building techniques (cobb, adobe, stone, straw/clay, passive/active heating systems) with presentations, discussions, exercises, and fun field trips.

GiraSol’s ground-breaking workshop will provide training in regenerative village design, natural construction and permaculture theory while establishing the GiraSol information center through hands-on work. The design will integrate a century-old adobe structure into a whimsical new building, seemingly sprung from the canvas of a Maxfield Parrish painting.

Led by mOceaN (Mark Lakeman), Lydia Doleman and Martin Shulke of Portland’s City Repair Project, the GiraSol Intensive will take place from 10/27/07 to 11/04/07. We will be camping as a group in the beautiful Baja desert, and all meals will be provided.

Basics

Location: GiraSol is a 200-acre parcel situated in Valle de las Palmas (Valley of the Palms), about 20 miles south of the U.S./Mexico Border and 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean between the major cities of Tijuana, Ensenada & Tecate. This new Center is on a vast tract of beautiful land in the valley, along a road from Ensenada to Tecate which is currently under construction. This road will bring unprecedented real estate development to this relatively undisturbed agrarian area. GiraSol strives to be a jewel in the Baja landscape by providing an example of sustainable community design.

Course Description: You will receive training AND become competent in the following areas:

1. regenerative village design and earthen building methods
2. biomass accumulation and use, plastering
3. roof framing
4. integrated landscaping
5. water catchment, re-use, and finishing methods.

Construction will be accompanied by discussions of the ecological features and benefits of each building phase. Through two field trips we will explore the local community by travelling to a wildlife preserve and taking part in Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

A Native Bulgarian, Rumen Shopov is master of the tambura, bouzouki, and percussion, as well as an accomplished singer. Rumen was concertmaster of the Nevrokop Folk Ensemble for over 20 years. Currently he leads the Bay area's "Okestar Sali", and plays percussion for "Edessa", "Ziyia" & "Kitka". Rumen & his son Angel recently released a CD produced by Voice of Roma, entitled "Soul of the Mahala". The CD is wonderful and his classes are fantastic!

as well as the usual Dante’s Sinferno and, of course, the Conclave Meeting!

What more could you ask for?

How about a space dedicated to collaborative work that actually wants large bands of crazy fire performers hanging out & doing their thing?

Sound good? Then make your way to Aphelion (3/3/07) at the new Watershed building to meet up with Burning Man theme camps and conclaves, other projects, groups and businesses, and anyone else who shows up to “fly their banner.” This is also a party, complete with dj’s, dancing, merriment and madness. Oh yeah, and alcohol. And lots of cool people from Seattle and other parts of the West Coast. And fire. Oh, yeah!

This affects us as the Oregon Conclave because this space, and the 30’ wide dead end street it sits on, have been offered to us for Conclave meetings and rehearsals in exchange for participation from the community. Our part at Aphelion is to discuss fire at the new building, and begin planning on how we want to handle the fire department in relation to this building.

It's Aphelion from Burning Man, exactly 6 months till the burn.

Oh wow. See, this is what I get for tooling around on the internet at work =P
Due to a financial nightmare stemming from an ID theft, I had to axe all of my hobbies and assorted after-work activities.
I think not being able to come to dance classes at Euphoria anymore was the hardest of them all, to be honest.
It's been a year and a half. Can't wait for the foot cramps! Woohoo!
I surrendered my truck a week ago, couldn't rationalize spending $600 a month on a vehicle I no longer drove.
That gives me a little more wiggle room to start paying off other debts from this mess, plus actually, ya know, get out of the house now and then.
So after some prodding from a friend, I decided to start with the Thursday cycle, tonight.
I'm going to miss Jane as a teacher terribly, but I'll give Tiffany a go =) Just no way I can get there bussing it by 6 =(
I had no idea this tribe was even here, until today after double and triple checking to make sure class wasn't canceled and to get my directions right.
Mother has a funny way of doing things.

And I've missed you guys =)

We have expanded our yoga classes, adding one of the best instructor's in Portland. (Now we have an All-star cast!)

Albert Trople's classes are Mon, Wed & Fri: 6:30am & 9am, Tues & Thur 5:30pm & Sat 9am

We also have Jane, Treva & Catherine on board with their amazing yoga classes too. Make your New Year's resolution NOW.

Holiday Hafla this saturday.....

I'm very excited for this show. Our new cab teachers & students are performing. Plus Mandala's new 7/8 piece. Neo-tribal Beg 2 has a funky upbeat new choregraphy, along w/ advanced classes Eshta.

It will be lots of fun I tell ya....
