Fear of Flying

Iw as never afraid of air travel. Until recently. On the new, they said they lost or damaged 1 million bags this year. You can look forward to delays and cancellations, and now they don't even feed you. My worst nightmare is being stuck on the tarmac for more than 3 hours, with no food, water, air conditioning or bathroom facilities.

Remember when air travel was swanky, and people even wore their Sunday best for it? Now you can look forward to flying with people in something as close to pajamas as they can get.

I hate flying, always have. Even doped up and getting drunk doesnt help.

<<Remember when air travel was swanky, and people even wore their Sunday best for it>>

Even buisness class and first class has gone down. At least those sections are supposed to have a "Dress code". They should make the whole thing with a dress code.

If it will keep the riff raff off the plane then raise fairs so the "sweat pants wearing trying to smuggle my kid in on carry on survivor watching McDonalds is fine dining bucked tooth born in a barn socialites" cant afford it anymore.

<<people even wore their Sunday best for it>>

People used to dress period. To go out without a hat wasnt done. Men always had a jacket. Women wore their makeup and jewelry. People cant even be bothered now for things you think it would be obligated for like funerals. I have gone to two wakes/funerals in over last year. People in sweat pants, flip flops, jogging suits. Its atrocious.

I have seen people come back from an interview and I ask if they wore that and they are like "why, whats wrong with it?" And they are wearing some matching velour sweat pants and top with some insane blinking tennis shoues and enough gold to choke a pimp.

I remember when my mother couldn't go clothes shopping because she didn't have a clean outfit suitable to wear to the store.

the stewardess said 'in the event of an emergency your seat cushion can be used as a floatation device.'

i said, 'in the event of an emergency, my seat cushion's going to be used as a toilet!'

from a 1950s book called Wife Dressing:

Once the Fasten-The-Seat-Belt sign has been turned out and the plane has leveled off, go to the ladies' room and take off the dress you want to have fresh on arrival. Give it to the stewardesss, who will hang it up. Change into something comfortable and cozy -- it's usually cold up in the air -- such as a wool smock or some loose coveralls that will allow you plenty of leg and body movement.

      Preach it!

When I used to fly internationally from 1994 - 99, I'd see people (mostly women though) dress so elegantly. You TOTALLY knew you were on American soil by the Southern drawals/twang and the jeans, sneakers, and backwards-cap-wearing ppl on the plane... dead giveaway. I still attempt to wear something reasonably eye-pleasing when I fly (except for those 15+ hr. intercontinental flights) and ALWAYS dress in layers, because it IS freezing on those flights, and when you're squeezed into those doll-sized seats, NOT fed for hours (I also bring my own food and snack bars), so you end up drinking alot but don't want to wake the person snoring next to you and your bladder is exploding which makes you even colder, you dress warm! And I always always ALWAYS bring a spare change of clothes and some toiletries in fear of them losing my luggage (which is happening more and more often these days).

Flying is so not what it used to be. I no longer get that pre-flight excitement and thrill from a flight... only a headache, anxiety and nervous cramps at the most.

I pack all of my underwear into my purse when I travel. There is nothing more gross to me than strangers raking through my gramma underwear - that. You can't lock up your suitcases any more - it's creepy! Why bother spending the bucks on your Samsonite? I have received more than one suit case at the luggage return with clothes that were sticking out because the person hadn't bothered to pack them back into the case. When you watch that sh*t fall of of carts onto the tarmack, it kind of makes you feel violated - or at least me.
